lives. >> a bay area nurse back home after joining the humanitarian effort in gaza. how she keeps her mission above politics. let's begin with this morning's top story in hayward. dozens of firefighters watching for hotspots following a raging fire at a warehouse. crews arrived to see this . flames shooting from the warehouse near tripaldi and hall road. the flames coming right out of the top of the building. sending black smoke into the sky and orange flames are searing the building. when they got there, they had to focus to keep it from spreading from other buildings. no injuries were reported. a sign of the times. 25 first republic locations in the bay area will close last year. last year jp morgan chase acquired first republic which is one of three midsize banks to fail. the closures will happen may 24th. of a giant tells us they will reopen 10

locations in our area as jp morgan or chase branches. sometimes we get lucky to share an event that reminds all of us where we are in the universe. a lot of people travel to certain parts of the nation, even to mexico for a front row seat to the solar eclipse. in the path of totality, it did not make it to the bay but we got a partial viewing. it was hard for me, future scientists and students gathered at stanford. in oakland, chabot space and sign center hosted people who got to learn what it means when an eclipse happens. they held a viewing from the campus for all to enjoy. >> it feels so powerful. it feels magical, almost. and it is beautiful. >> i feel lucky to be alive to see all of this beautiful stuff. in this world. >> astronomers say it is a

lucky time because the moon is slowly moving further away from the earth and at the same time the sun is getting bigger, meaning we hit the sweet spot. for those who missed the event the video showing the moment are nearly impossible to miss. look at this from mazatlan, mexico. everything goes dark. this was the first stop in the path of totality when the eclipse hit its peak . many people were looking to enjoy the rare event, there were some scammers taking advantage of the moment. we learned this morning of a recall on some brands of fake eclipse safe glasses. these are what they look like. they were recalled by the illinois department of health for failing to meet safety standards. sold in several stores in illinois and listed on amazon under the label . maybe check your amazon purchases recently if you bought glasses. an amazon spokesperson said those who have purchased them have been notified and provided refunds. it was an honor to be on set with anne makovec and jessica burch and our news

once again around the corner . that reminds me a lot of last week's cold front that brought and breezy conditions, chilly temperatures and more rain. that happens as we head into this friday, saturday and sunday but before we get there i want to talk about the drive portion. it is dry into the afternoon today. thanks to high pressure offshore. that is giving us above average when it comes to temperatures. taking a look at daytime highs today, we are above average whether you are in san francisco, oakland or all the way into areas like concord and san jose. let's dive into the temperatures. it is a gorgeous day to get out and get fresh air. i will mention the pollen count is relatively high. take it slow if you are sensitive to allergies but other than that , will be a great day to take advantage of some fresh air outside. we are expecting 73 degrees near redwood city. 77 into livermore and if you like one 70s, that is the case throughout the santa clara valley and we are expecting 80s around the corner. the system that is offshore will continue to warm us up into the low 80s for wednesday and thursdays forecast with sunny

skies . and a cold front starts rolling its way in into the weekend forecast and that is what will bring in the showers and chilly temperatures and the gusty conditions until around sunday afternoon. israel-hamas war entering his seventh month after hamas killed some 1200 people on october 7th and took hostages. that action prompted israel to strike back and as of this morning global leaders continue to call for a cease-fire and to release all hostages. today vice president kamala harris will meet with families of americans taken hostage during the october 7th terror attack. yesterday pope francis chimed in and met with israelis who have lost loved ones in gaza. the pope has called for an immediate cease-fire in the war and the release of all hostages and full access to humanitarian aid. in gaza, israel's military has withdrawn from a place called khan younis. palestinians returning finally to see the city reduced to rubble. there are

bay area helpers building bridges. they saw images like those and decided to get up and go to gaza to try to help. talk about fairfax nurse, sandra adler. she shared with josé martinez what she saw during her two weeks in gaza. >> reporter: sandra adler is back to her day job as an emergency room and pediatric nurse for kaiser permanente east bay after completing a two-week mission in gaza. >> i feel like what we did was a band-aid. even saving, hopefully saving lives. but in the bigger picture, again , a tiny drop. of what we could accomplish in the two weeks we were there. >> reporter: she says she and her team saw more than 150 patients a day , through her time in southern gaza. the work was difficult . >> we were at a trauma civilization point in khan younis. working with a lot of

mass casualty incidents . a lot of pediatric trauma. >> reporter: so was getting to gaza in the first place. a journey started in germany, with training on how to work in a hostile environment. and from there -- >> we went to cairo. where we procure some additional supplies, medical equipment. we brought 32 crates with us of mostly medical supplies. and medicines. it was about a 10 hour trip getting to the border and crossing over and getting to our home base in rafah. >> reporter: sandra is no stranger to this work. she has been and disaster zones in places like syria, mexico and panama but said this deployment was the toughest. >> the artillery fire we heard definitely increased over time . i was in the last five days it was coming close to rafah but consistently throughout my time there , we heard shelling.

>> reporter: she said one of her dearest memories is this picture. with a little girl who visited her brother every day while he was receiving medical attention. but the saddest one was -- >> leaving my colleagues. i knew we would be open the whole time i had a way out. this is a situation that you cannot leave. this is a situation that they are enduring day after day after day. >> sandra work with a nonprofit emergency response organization called cadus. they got her into gaza. this was her 12th humanitarian mission. she would like to go back if and when she can. are the a's striking out again? now there is a court challenge in nevada. it is

sur after a portion of the highway crumbled during easter weekend. it was a mess. crews plan to drill vertical anchors in the southbound lane of the highway near the rocky creek bridge. large chunk of the road c is resuming their convoys in that area to get people through the damaged area. let's go to oakland. secretary of health and human services xavier becerra will visit the bay area for a latino health tour. in less than two hours he will address decades of health care disparities faced by latinos and communities of color emphasizing inclusion in clinical trials and expanding healthcare. making sure the results reflect the community. a las vegas teacher organization wants to make sure the a's stadium does not cross home plate. today is their day in court. they are suing over $380 million public funding bill for the a's new las vegas ballpark. the argument is that millions should not be spent on a ballpark when students needed for education. the group is called, schools over stadiums. they did lose an early battle when a judge sided with the a's saying the groups referendum petition submitted left out details for potential

signings to make an informed decision. for the month since they are holding the ground. they have been trying to appeal that ruling. today the organization has the chance to argue that decision but they said if the original ruling is upheld, they have backup and they say they will file a lawsuit declaring a bill to pave the way the passage of public money to help pay for the stadium, unconstitutional. looking live over san francisco. the big question is when did library employees need security guards to get into a building full of books? safety is the demand of the library workers fighting the light on city blocks and in response a rally by public library employees demanding safer streets outside where they work. the complaint, drug addicts and homelessness right outside their doors . makes the job of being librarians unsafe . the rally starts at noon at san francisco's main library. taking a live look at san jose where this afternoon city council will vote on new rules that would limit where people can park their large vehicles and rvs. this is for overnight parking. the rules would

prohibit people from setting up encampments within 150 feet of a school. supporters say they will make roads and schools safer while critics say, they are criminalizing homelessness. it has been a beautiful, warm start to the week as high pressure's is offshore, bring in the winds from the north and leaving us with clear skies into the afternoon hours which was perfect for yesterday's partial eclipse that we experience in the bay area. the system will continue to move off into the east, later this week. and we actually have another rain system returning to the bay area heading into or weekend forecast, which is similar to last week's cold front that moved its way in. member how easter sunday was beautiful and sunny and suddenly by the end of the week we had breezy conditions and rainy skies . that is happening this week as an area of low pressure starts coming to the pacific northwest and eventually just offshore. of our california coastline and that will bring in rain for us friday, saturday and a little bit sunday. as it continues to circulate offshore, it will

bring in gusty conditions and the cool temperatures. compared to what we have today it will look different and i will show you what we are expecting today. here are rainfall totals we are expecting heading into the weekend forecast. about half an inch which is pretty impressive. as we extended to the next several days, considering the fact we are above average for many pockets in the bay area for rainfall season so far. san francisco, all the way into santa rosa and san jose, we are sitting above 100%. taking a look at daytime highs today, we are expecting beautiful conditions. i am talking about 70s anywhere from antioch into livermore. the 60s along the coast. it is still a sunny day for us to matter whether you live along half moon bay or into the santa clara valley. expect a gorgeous one this afternoon. taking a look at the next seven days, wednesday and thursday looking perfect. sunny skies, mild conditions, expecting 80s and our inland areas and was a cold front moves in, watch the difference that happens within a matter of a couple days. 50s

looking live at san francisco and a sobering reality. the office buildings are a headline. according to a commercial real estate firm, 36% of the city's office space is unused . it is at an all-time high. some blame the post pandemic rise of remote work but the mayor wants to turn this empty space into anything but office spaces . one small downtown business tells us , this change cannot happen soon enough. >> reporter: sajj mediterranean has been here at the corner of pine and belden in the financial district since 2018. the manager, nancy, says when they first got this location they were ecstatic. >> this was the fourth store. it was pretty busy. >> reporter: nancy said they would have lines out the door during the weekday lunch rush. but then, the pandemic hit. >> it is not the same as

before. >> reporter: nancy said even all these years later since the peak of covid, the crowds just are not coming back. >> out of the five days we may have two good days. >> reporter: sajj is not alone. so many businesses continue to struggle , especially those downtown. the trend toward work from home , has gutted many high-rises in the area, take you wait a huge chunk of these restaurants clientele. that is why mayor breed and several other city officials are pushing the state to pass laws that will make it easier to turn those based in spaces into housing or other missed use venues. president and ceo of the san francisco chamber of commerce , said he is fully on board with the mayor's vision. >> it taught us not to put all of our eggs in one basket and san francisco has the boundary of being able to try to diversify itself, which the mayor of sacramento is trying to do to expedite and create incentives for those to take chances and be creative. >> reporter: back at sajj,

welcome back. april is an important month. it is donate life month. a 14-year-old boy had a chance to raise a commemorative flag at a hospital where he received a life-saving kidney transplant courtesy of a stranger. jackson of turlock was diagnosed with a genetic disorder of the kidneys and the two. he needed a transplant before they fail completely. when sarah saw his story on social media, she put her own interest aside and stepped in and said i will do it. they have their surgeries at stanford in december. they were supposed to reunite monday by guess what, sarah got a flat tire and could not make it. that did not stop jackson from letting her know how she changed his life. >> thank you for the chance of life again. and i really enjoy
