chilly temperatures. but that's going to change drastically this afternoon. we're waking up to a beautiful sunrise and you can see right above me over the bay bridge. over the hills as we head out the door. right around the corner as that sun continues to build -- move its way above us and high pressure continues to build its way in, just in our atmosphere, this is going to give us dry conditions this afternoon. a mix of sun and clouds but still, dry and warm conditions for today and tomorrow. before another cold front moves in heading into our weekend forecast. and that's going to bring us showers and lots of cool temperatures throughout the bay area. and of course gusty conditions too. but let's -- we'll get there when we get there. let's talk more about today. daytime highs this afternoon, if you live near san francisco are hitting 70 degrees and that puts us about seven degree betsy devos average. as that high pressure system sits offshore that is the big reason why we're seeing 80s return into the forecast in areas like san jose and concord. that puts us about 15 degrees above average and you can see it sitting just offshore moving in a clockwise direction. but once we head into this weekend, this cold

front and the opposite direction moves in from offshore. this works in a counterclockwise direction and it brings in these rainy conditions widespread throughout the bay area. and if you remember last week, on easter sunday, when we were dealing with beautiful sunshine. and then we went into the rest of the week with rainy skies, this is the exact same storm setup. we're going to talk more about that and break apart the science but for now over to you. reed? all right, let's complex on traffic this morning and starting off right now on the bay bridges. as many head out the door on your way to work this morning, over at the golden gate bridge, a few cars making the drive from marin county over to san francisco. looks nice and no delays to report there. different story though jumping the map. you can see the metering lights are now on at the bay bridge. just a bit of a backup right after the toll plaza. but all in all, pretty light there. some spots you can even change lanes right? a bit busy through the next couple of hours and bumper-to-bumper traffic starting to stretch towards the maze though. and we are almost to may. nicole? so i got that in there barely. welt, taking you live to

stanford's campus where legendary women's basketball coach tara vanderveer announced her retirement after a whopping 38 seasons at the school. she led the cad that would to three national titles and 14 final four appearances and not the mention her teams have played in the ncaa tournament every year since 1988. she was inducted into the basketball hall of fame in 2011. and even coached team usa in the olympics in 1996. well, earlier this year in a win other oregon state, vanderveer passed former duke coach mike krzyzewski. she finishes her career with 1,216 wins under her belt. and we mentioned those three stanford championship victories. well, this one you are seeing on the screen is her most recent in 2021. when her team beat arizona by one point. her first came in 1990 against auburn and that year the cardinal had a 32-1 record and then two years later, they beat western

kentucky. so let's go over her resume again here. over 1200 wins. three championships. five-time national coach of the year awards. 14 final four appearances. and 27 pac-12 regular season titles. vanderveer said she was spoiled to coach one of the best at one of the top institutions in the world for nearly four decades. and we have been spoiled by you, coach. so now who's going to take up the mantle? well, stanford announced negotiations have started forsubstantiate kate pay to take over. just finished her 17th year as the assistant with stanford. also announced that vanderveer will remain with the program in an advisory role. >> for no -- now, this morning, is all about celebrating vanderveer's legacy. former head coach for the indiana men's basketball team said the only thing more bucket list for me than seeing a practice before the final four in indy was her -- being in our

tuning in to watch women's basketball. there are numbers there and she has proved her case through the excellence of her players. all right, so uc berkeley's close to getting a new chancellor. a special meeting of state education leaders starts this morning. whoever takes the helm at berkeley does so at a time when the school is seeking solutions to safety issues in and around campus in recent months. well, just before the deadline in politics the two men tied in the race for sill l silicon valley's district 16 house race they're going see a ballot recount. here's what's really interesting. listen up. the recount request did not come from the candidates. santa clara county supervisor joe simitian and evan low both finished in second place and if you see there on the screen, they both finished with 30,249 votes. exact same number. so you'd think they would be one requesting the recount. but they're not. so who did it? dan stegnic of san mateo county and jonathan padilla of santa

clara county. what's really interesting about this is that padilla is the former finance director for their opponent sam liccardo. the party requesting it has to pay for it. by the way low's campaign sounded off saying quote -- this move is right out of trump's political playbook. closed quote. months after the death of a california political trailblazer, the ring cone center post office in san francisco could get a new name. senators alex padilla and butler introducing a bill to name this location after the late senator dianne feinstein. nicole? well, school safety is top of mind for a group of san jose parents. they're fighting to put some extra space between their kids' campuses and homeless encampments. as katie nielsen reports they say it's time the city steps in. >> for the past year and a half, we've been involved in some advocacy surrounding our

school safety and security. >> reporter: alfredo hernandez is a senior at kipp and says some of the people living in rvs have scared his classmates. >> she was catcalled by one of the unhoused residents living near and neighboring our school and that really --that really made me realize how severe this issue has gotten and how we need an immediate solution. >> reporter: alfredo says the rvs started parking around the school during the pandemic and that's when the problems really started. he says he met with san jose's mayor matt mahan to talk about the concerns. >> they were walking past rv encampments. sometimes being harassed on their way on and off-campus. or having break-ins on campus. even found needles on their picnic tables and they asked us what as a city can we do. >> reporter: the answer is apparently two new ordinances. one that would prevent tent encampments within 150 feet of a school. and the other would allow oversized vehicles and rvs to be towed if they posed a public safety risk, which includes being parked near schools.

>> [ spea king in a global language ] this is her house, she says. >> reporter: for those like ana guerrero who lives in an rv parked next to the school, she says she started parking here a few weeks ago because she was out of options. >> [ speaking in a global language ] we're here because we're struggling. we don't really have a place to go. you know? because there isn't really places where you can park. >> reporter: ana says she wants to go to one of the county's safe parking sites, but her rv has been ticketed in the past. to the point she can't renew her registration without paying all those past due parking tickets and she can't park in a county safe parking lot until she gets her rv registered. >> [ speaking in a global language ] we're just trying to survive. just trying to survive. >> we are not advocating for the criminalization of our unhoused neighbors. we are advocating for a solution that benefits both us, the students and our safety. but also advocating for a solution that benefits our unhoused residents. >> well, the ordinance sailed

all right, welcome back and i want to show you something. this is a gray whale it's floating and swimming right off of the coast of thornton beach in pacifica. it's had a hard night. its tail and you can see that dragging there is tangled in a fishing net. in fact, that's drone video that shows the whale dragging a load of buoys for some 400 miles. we know this because ocean experts first spotted and tracked the whale last month near laguna beach. the president of the pacific beach coalition is worried saying it's amazing the whale even came this far. listen. >> this particular whale is very lucky because it's able to pull that along. sometimes they get dragged down and they cant get up. the buoy would get stuck on something and now

they're trapped and they're losing steam and they have to breathe. so if they -- you know, they run out of steam and they can't breathe, they're gone. >> well, as you can imagine the whale has tired out and this is a closer look at something called gill nets wrapped all around its tail there. now the race to cut it free from the net is on. it's risky business for both the whale and those who want to get out and help it. listen. >> you are literally in a little boat going up to a whale. you know, and diving into the water. next to a whale that could kill you with one swipe of its fin. and literally cutting the rope off the whale. >> there's a big responsibility for us to -- to do everything in our power to help them. >> no timeline yet for when that whale could swim free. well, in the north bay, sonoma county deputies caught two suspects in a burglary bust and found piece of evidence that they probably didn't want to take back to the station. they found a live snake in the trunk of a car at a rohnert

park home. officers caught the two suspects in the same garage that the snake was lurking. but the department says it wasn't anyone's pet. it just happened to be there. houseboats don't usually stray from the dock. but this two story homemade a move right across the san francisco bay and our chopper caught a curious kayaker checking it out. the san francisco standard reports the home was being towed after a years long legal battle that forced a community of houseboats to relocate. if you go to the instagram you will actually see i saw that as well and thought what is this outside? let's go outside right now and take a look at this wednesday morning. good morning, everybody. and looking live there. you see some fog settling in among those buildings there. and as we mentioned yesterday, some 30 to 35% of the offices are empty here in san francisco. so that is something we have to work on and bouncing in is jessica burch to talk about the

weather. good morning. absolutely. good morning. yeah, we're going to see a mix of sun and clouds in the forecast for us this afternoon. but one thing worth mentioning we're also going to warm up a lot in this afternoon. our daytime highs today, let me just tease ahead and weathering 70s from 80s from san francisco off into the east bay and for the friends near redwood city. about eight degrees above average today. 15 degrees above average in san jose a beautiful day for us. and we're waking up to beautiful sunrise already. that's our live cam from our black mountain cam. it's stunning right now throughout the santa clara valley. but we do see some of that fog creeping in along the coastal areas and it's going to be a dry i day for us today. so keep that in mind. our pollen count is relatively high and we're actually in the high category today and tomorrow. it's starting to decrease into that medium category heading into this weekend. and here's the big reason why. we have a big change in the forecast for us heading into this weekend. bringing in rain and more moisture all the way into the friday evening and saturday forecast. right now we're just seeing that mix of sun and clouds today and tomorrow. i'm

advancing the clock all the way into the friday setup. where we start to see that frontal system move in all throughout the afternoon hours. that first band of rain expected to hit the bay area into the 10:00, # 1:00 hour that night. and we see that system sitting just offshore working in a counterclockwise direction bringing in a series of showers for the saturday forecast lingering into the sunday forecast too. let's pull up the 7 day so we can actually see what i'm talking about. today and tomorrow, stunning news to get out there and get so much fresh air. we have some sunshine in the forecast and 80s in the inland areas and this is some really nice spring-like weather despite fact that yes, our pollen count is high. but we notice a big difference and i mean 80s all the way into the 50s within the matter of two days that cold front is going to pack its punch with cool weather and widespread throughout the bay area. we're just seeing some gusty conditions ahead of it. so keep that in mind for outdoor activities and of course the showers are going to linger into our saturday forecast. and a little bit of sunday morning too. but that's just our inland areas. that's where we're seeing the 80s. for the friends along the bay new york city we're not going

to get 80s but we're pretty close, i mean today we're in the upper 70s and lower 70s by tomorrow and then the exact same trend no matter where you live, we're all hitting the 50s bisaturday with rainy skies around the corner. lots of green out on the freeways so far although slow sponges pick up on 808 over in hay word. dublin westbound 580 as well. two lanes blocked due to the crash. we can see here just a little bit of buildup before the hop yard exit. we do know emergency services are out there. to help drivers get the help and support they need. traffic is slow and clears up before you jump over on to the 680. so no it's going to be a like a deep breathe when you make the transition. another accident in the clearing stages at the altamont pass, slow speeds for those exiting out of tracy on 580. just be safe and keep the heads up and chin up. notice anything different here? maybe something a little strange. what is up with this giants' mascot? we reached out to the team and we have an exclusive answer for you this morning. and here's a live look outside before we head to break

in tournament as the tenth seed in the western conference for now. but they still have a shot at ninth if they win the rest of the games. and last night, they showed that they were hungry to get back in the playoffs. the dubs didn't sweat much against the lakers. especially with anthony davis out with an injury. steph curry's moves on full display. he had 23 points and he was a perfect 6-6 from three. check out his dime passes. beautiful thing to watch. draymond green, he even tied his career record for most threes in one-half. in total the warriors drained 26 threes for a 134-120 win over the lakers. another bay area team on the road. the a's in texas. taking on the rangers. and what a homecoming for catcher shea langeliers. the baylor graduate benefit yard in the 2nd inning. do it again? of course he can. langeliers with a solo shot to center field in the 7th but wait he's not done. down one

in the 9th. langeliers. barrels one. a two run homer here. and that is a three bomb night for the 26-year-old. a's hang on to win 4-3 the final. the giants hosted the washington nationals for their second game of the series last night. kyle harrison on the mound and he showed what he can do when he's on point. but run support struggling point-blank. harrison went six innings and allowed three runs and he pocketed eight strikeouts and five of which came in the first two innings. the giants had two bases loaded opportunities in the 9th and squandered it. first a chopper to washington's kyle phenone began. he threw it home to prevent a run from scoring. then the new giant matt chap map had a chance to play hero but instead grounded into a double play. nats beat the giants 5-3. san francisco ranks in the bottom ten in the league in runs, battle average, and on base percentage. reed? all right, so look at this. giants' fans -- have to turn

and in 30 seconds it will be of:30 in the morning but for right now we're going the settle on 6:29 and be grateful right? there's the bay bridge and treasure island and saying hi to the sunlight as it comes p over the east bay. good morning, everybody. nice to have you with us. speaking of the east bay and bringing jess in here and we know you spent lot of time up in the air. i have to give a shout-out to oakland's mike harrison in the montclair neighborhood. it is chemtrails. not contrails and the video that we showed of the plane flying into the eclipse. yeah, no, it's just that excess that you can actually see it's what's suspended in the air that little bit of -- image -- we're going to dive into that later.

>> contrails is not chemtrails. >> yes. all right a quick look at what's going outside right now. that is a whole topic seriously. but the warm setup in the bay area just into the afternoon hours today. and tomorrow. we've got high pressure sitting offshore bringing in warm weather and we're talking about 80s in the forecast today throughout most our inland areas. 70s along the peninsula. and that's going to be the case for us tomorrow too. but once we head into our forecast for friday heading into saturday too, that's when a big game changer happening and low pressure is moving in just like last week's storm that brought in a series of chilly temperatures. and gusty conditions on top of all that rain. we're seeing another one move in into our friday forecast. by saturday, notice how these aides that i just mentioned drop all the way down into the 50s and this is just san jose. this is a good example for one of the inland climate zones that actually receives the warmest weather on average. extending into the next couple of days we're just going to see a mix of sun and clouds leading up to that cold front initially. but it's worth noting that today is the day to get out there and get some fun

outdoor activities in or tomorrow as well. heading into friday evening notice that band of rain starting to slowly creep its way in. i'm going to stop the time right here at 10:00 in the evening hours that night. that's when that rain first hits the bay area. starting along the coast and moving its way inland and we'll have more on that coming up in a bit. but taking a look at today like i mentioned we're sitting above average and i'll show you how warm you actually are above average throughout your local communities in just a bit. 77 today in redwood city and 82 antioch and a beautiful start with that sunrise down into the santa clara valley. just near san jose. reed? all right, you so the bay bridge there behind jess. let's talk about the traffic. we're tracking brake lights out on the richmond-san rafael bridge is there. you see some people changing lanes and they're just approaching that toll plaza slowly. going over towards marin county. the right hand of your screen eastbound commuters are having a smooth drive though towards berkeley. and a live look over at the san mateo bridge camera. and you see there there's more traffic

now at 6:32 in the morning. a bit smooth over to highway 101 from 880 into hayward. traffic is officially backed up on the bay bridge. just your average standard fare at this time of the morning. slow moves as you make your way towards the toll plaza. it continues we understand backing up through the treasure island exit. nicole? well, cruise announced it's taking steps to get its fleet of cars back on city streets. in blog post the company said it will resume manual driving in phoenix, arizona, no word yet on if or when operations will expand to other places like here in san francisco. for now, the next steps for the company include mapping out and gathering road information in certain cities. then it will begin supervised driverless car rides. the company says going forward it's going to improve safety and performance. if you recall back in october, the company suspended all operations after one of its cars dragged and pinned a san francisco pedestrian. east palo alto police are searching for the suspect in the city's second homicide of

the year. yesterday, an officer found a victim with a fatal injury along newell road near the four seasons hotel. they have not made any arrests and they were initially unable to determine the cause of death. this investigation comes after east palo alto recorded zero homicides in all of 2023. a major achievement for the town because in the early '90s they were the murder capital of the u.s. despite spending billions, california is getting a failing grade when it comes to addressing the homelessness issue in the state. that's the findings of a new audit. it found homeless numbers jumped 53% in the last decade with the estimated 180,000 people unhoused in california. that's despite the state spending more than $20 billion to stop it. a local taxpayer group that we spoke to isn't surprised. >> unfortunately, this is a very common situation in california as well as other places. both at the state level and the local level. people

will throw money at a problem and wouldn't it be nifty if we did this and no one keeps score. >> the two programs that the audit said are clearly working are cal works and project home key, which converts hotel rooms into housing. well, developing this morning in the state of arizona. that state's supreme court has ruled an abortion ban dating back to the civil war is still enforceable this morning. in a 4-2 ruling the state court upheld that 1864 law that bans nearly all abortions except to save the life of a mother. doctors who defy the law face up to five near years in prison. so here's what's next in arizona. the order is on hold for two weeks pending challenges in lower arizona courts and already this morning, there are signs of a fight gearing up. the state's top prosecutor one of them, vowing to not enforce the law. and arizona's governor is calling on state lawmakers to repeal the law. let's talk about the weir in gaza. president joe biden

telling a world audience that israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu needs to call for a ceasefire and is also saying that netanyahu is making many mistakes. this, as families of the 133 hostages held by hamas met with vice president kamala harris yesterday to push for their release. for weeks, the u.s. has urged netanyahu to not go forward with a ground invasion of a place where more than a million palestinians have taken refuge. it's called rafah. as of this morning, netanyahu signals there is now a date on the calendar for that offensive to begin. so there are refugees there. kids and tents this morning. and a big concern by top leaders in washington in fact. here's jake sullivan national security advisor. >> any kind of plan to protect civilians in a serious way in rafah, that's something we have yet to see be presented to us. and so our concerns continue. >> we'll be watching that one closely. lot of people saying that there's concern that the kids that you see in these photos, they could be so

the government monthly report on inflation is coming and hot. the march consumer price index is out this morning. and cbs news business analyst jill schlesinger joins us live from new york with the results. good morning to you, jill. so what did the march data show? >> reporter: yeah, hot is not in good hot way. you know? and so we saw prices accelerate in the month of march and the consumer price index, the overall rate was up by 3.5% from a year ago. that is higher than the february reading when we saw the cpi was up just # .2%. higher energy and shelter prices is behind it. specifically energy, gas prices were up by 6.4% just during the month alone. the core rate strips out food and energy. that did remain at 3.8% from a year ago but still, the rate of increase remains way higher than the fed would like. >> jill, every time i go to the grocery store, i look at the receipt and i wonder how can

this be? so what is happening with the prices at the grocery stores? are they budging at all? >> reporter: when you looked at the march report, and i dug in a little bit. we saw six categories in the food aisles that were down but you are not crazy because prices overall at the grocery store are outpacing the overall inflation rate. if you go to say the cpi and we just go point to point, four years ago from there, prices are up 20% over all right? but in the food aisles that pain is acute. prices at the grocery store are up by more than 36% from four years ago. that means that that basket of groceries that you bought for $100 four years ago it now costs you $136. so by the way, this is not to make you feel better. but it should make you feelless crazy. because prices really are higher at the grocery store. >> well, and many economists believe inflation will eventually drop over the next year. but where do americans

think prices are headed? >> reporter: you know, right now, with inflation is up 3.5% from a year ago, most people believe that inflation will be 3% or 2.9% over the course of the next one to three years. at five years americans think the inflation rate is going to be 2.6%. which is way higher than we were before the pandemic. just a reminder, inflation ran at about 2% for the decade leading up to the pandemic so i think people are really skittish about these prices. and they are fearful that these price hikes will stay with us longer. >> all right, thank you jill. for more analysis, go to jillonmoney.com. meanwhile, the u.s. postal service wants to raise stamp prices again. if approved, the price of a first class forever stamp will go up from 68 cents to 73 cents on july 14th. special service products like certified mail and money order fees will increase as well. target is rolling out new

afternoon. we're expecting upper 70s and lower 80s into the afternoon hours today. with a mix of sun and clouds in the forecast too. a beautiful day to head out to the trails and a beautiful day to really get out there and stretch the legs no matter where live in the area, average in san francisco all the way over into concord and about 12 degrees above average in the east bay today. about 15 degrees above average off in the santa clara valley. and we all have one thing in common. that mix of sun and clouds. despite the fact that our temperatures are a lot cooler along the coast dh afternoon we're going to be seeing warmer temperatures tomorrow too. and then we're waiting for a cold front moving in from just offshore. all the way into our friday forecast. we're going to start off just friday afternoon with gusty conditions and cloudy skies. by late friday evening, that first band of rain moves its way in. you see the center of the area of low pressure just offshore. and like last week's storm, we'll see the winds sweeping in from the south bringing in some moderate pockets of rain at times. and that's going to last all throughout our saturday forecast. clearing up slowly into sunday with some

cloudy skies. but let's talk more about today. it is national hug your beth day right around the corner we have national take your dog to work day. there's some big changes in the forecast for us and we're going to continue to see warmer conditions heading into summer. but we're already feeling summer-like throughout this afternoon today. we're expecting 80s from san jose over into livermore where we're starting to see the sun rise. a beautiful afternoon for us with light winds and mild conditions and then we're going to get a repeat of that tomorrow. it's not until friday where we get the first glimpse of cold front moving its way in from offshore, 80s in 60s pretty quick but then even cooler in the saturday forecast into the 50s no matter whether you live in the inland areas or along the bay. luckily it's just saturday though and actually unfortunately, it's saturday. of course it lands on a weekend. by sunday, those showers start to taper off and then we're left with sunny skies into early next week for our inland areas with some partly cloudy skies close to the coast. reed? drive times at this time in the morning. it is busy close

to the 7:00 hour especially the ones out on the east bay where we will see more brake lights around the next few hours. this stent is over on dublin still causing some added traffic to your drive. three lanes are still blocked going westbound 580. we're not sure when they will open just yet and we're making calls. bit of stop and go conditions also drivers merge safely into ongoing lanes. westbound 80 in vallejo also expecting delays due to the crash there. a huge buildup although a few minutes ago lanes have reopened to clear this dense area. well, dozens of san francisco library workers did not stay silent at their place of work. that's because they say drugs and homelessness around libraries has gotten out of hand. this is them protesting in front of the civic center building. calling for more security at all branches. our amanda hari spoke with librarians about the dangers that they've had to face while on the job.

>> we were not trained to do this type of work in library school. >> reporter: library workers across the city. say they're being forced to do a lot more than recommend books. every day, they're the ones making sure the libraries are safe. nicole termini-germain has been working in the san francisco library system for more than 30 years. she says over the years, some things have become worse and she fears someone is going to be hurt. >> we could field a whole library with the incidents. >> reporter: termini-germain brought a stack of incident reports with her all from the past month and she works as a branch manager at the portal edge children's library. she says they bargained for a guard back in 2022 after they had an incident that could have become a tragedy. >> i have nightmares about this one to this day. i will never forget it. >> reporter: she says it was a normal day after school let out and the library was filled with small children.

>> then i saw a half dressed man, clearly mentally unstable. wielding a weapon. he was walking around the library. cussing at people. and threatening to stab them. >> reporter: she called library security. they were across the city. 911 responders didn't show up. the burden to get rid of the man and keep the children safe fell on her. >> i got him out there and he started threatening a large group of preschoolers who were sitting on the floor. and he was cussing at them and threatening them with this weapon. i, feeling that strong sense of duty to protect the people, stepped between the man with the weapon and the children. i stood between them and he was aiming it right at my chest and i said, no, thank you. if he had not left, i may not be standing here today. >> it's aggravating. >> reporter: jasmine is one of several unhoused residents camping on the streets outside the main library. she says library workers shouldn't be specifically concerned about people experiencing homelessness. and someone in

her situation who is trying to use the library should be allowed to do so. >> if a homeless person on -- is going to the library, hey, i salute them. you know? at least they're trying to stimulate their mind. >> reporter: a spokesperson with sf public library says the security incidents are down 14% from last year. and not all branches require dedicated security. but termini-germain says the conditions on the street are keeping families away. >> i know a number of people who will not bring their children to this main library. i'm a parent, you know. and that breaks my heart. i don't even want to bring my children to the main library. >> library workers tell us that this picket isn't the end. they're going to keep raising awareness until they have the tools to keep things safe. and it's not just san francisco. other bay area libraries have been dealing with security issues. if you recall in february, thecity of

antioch hired private security on west 18th crete. county also sid a plan to upgrade the fencing and security cameras. it's a trend that started in the north bay and now pinole has become the first city in the east bay to ban new gas stations. the city council voted last week to put in new temporary moratorium in place. now it's part of the effort to reduce the city's greenhouse gas emissions. but some drivers that we spoke with aren't fans of the decision. >> we should be able to be building gas stations. as people need -- still need gas. i mean, we don't have -- all of us don't have the opportunity to get electric cars. >> all of napa county cities have passed gas station bans. fairfax and san anselmo have similar measures. a live look over at capitol hill where decades after their service, the women who worked in factories during world war ii, the same women who inspired rosie the riveter will finally get the recognition that they deserve. rosies from across the country including some from right here in the bay area will
