cancer. heisman trophy winner grew up in public housing in san francisco and had a career in the nfl before the infamous double murder trial. he passed away last night in las vegas surrounded by his children and his grandchildren. and post on x his family announced on april 10th our father orenthal james simpson , succumb to his battle with cancer. and they say they are asking for privacy, and grace. simpsons achievements eclipsed by the 1995 acquittal in the heartbreaking trial of the century. >> reporter: o.j. simpson sort of him is number 32 for the buffalo bills. and plummeted to infamy as inmate number 102780. in the nevada department of corrections. in between, simpson led a life filled with more surreal drama than all of his various film and tv projects combined. mass media absurd say the televised low-speed chase , arrest and murder trial, stand is the

first reality show. perhaps the greatest three-ring television phenomenon ever. at one point, the world heard o.j. simpson's ex-wife nicole brown simpson say -- >> he is going to beat me. >> reporter: later simpson was charged with the horrific murders by knife, of nicole and her friend ron goldman. >> ron and nicole were butchered. >> reporter: the trial made lawyers and witnesses household names. >> orenthal james simpson not guilty of the crime of murder. >> reporter: when the jury freed simpson, celebration erupted and parts of los angeles. but simpson would never recapture his idols status . simpson first sprinted into the national spotlight as the heisman trophy winning running back at the university of southern california. then 11 spectacular years with the nfl , vaulted into the pro football hall of fame. simpson cashed in on the popularity. becoming a pitch man for hurts and an actor. becoming

well-known for the naked gun movies. >> o.j. simpson as you have never seen before. >> reporter: simpson played a law man on screen and ran into trouble with the courts offscreen. he lost a multimillion dollar wrongful death suit brought by the families of his ex-wife and ron goldman. then moved to florida. in 2000, simpson was accused of assault at a road rage incident in miami and found not guilty. and 2005, he was found guilty and fined for stealing satellite television. in 2007 in las vegas, police arrested him on several felony charges including kidnapping and armed robbery. in that case, simpson and armed the compasses rated a hotel room in what he called, an attempt to just get back some of his stolen belongings. >> i did not know i was doing anything illegal. i thought it was confronting friends. and retrieving my property. >> reporter: the nevada jury never bought his story and instead sent him to prison. he was released on parole nine years later in the dead of night with no fanfare, and no

bright future. just the distinction of arguably the greatest rise and fall in pop culture history. >> and much more to come on the death of o.j. simpson throughout the day. it has been a busy morning. another developing story. we have been talking about this. developing out of san joaquin county, firefighters have gained control over this massive fire near tracy along grant line road. officials responded to the gma pallet recycling corporation yard just before 2:00 a.m. we know at least 19 homes nearby were evacuated as a result . this is what it looks like earlier. a school across the street from here , confirmed earlier they will be closed for the day. you see a lot of this video there are power lines. there is an impact to so many people. hundreds of people , pg&e says are without electricity due to the fire. no water supply . fire crews had a hard fought fight , because they had to

shut the water in, which made it difficult to fight. this is what one of the employees set. >> ever since i was a little kid, i knew this place was here since i was eight years old. watching it, into flames is something. it really hurts me. it is something that we never thought we would see. >> hearing from the employee makes you wonder what happened to all the jobs at that pallet recycling plant . we will follow that. it is an active story and we will keep you updated on all of the ramifications of that fire as we hear more. it is a beautiful day in the bay area. with 70s all throughout one country. upper 60s into san francisco with low 70s across the bay bridge into oakland. the more south we go the warmer it gets. this is similar to yesterday's forecast with sunny skies and 80s holding on tight to us . this is above average. all throughout the santa clara valley where today we are

topping off at 80 degrees in san jose putting us 12 degrees above average. we will get rid of the above average temperatures pretty fast as we head into this weekend and here is why. the cold front is moving its way in from offshore bring in a series of showers heading into early saturday morning. it is late friday night into early saturday morning where the cold front initially moves its way in and we are left with daytime highs only topping off in the 50s for saturday, 60s by sunday. this is our inland forecast in the 80s will quickly dissipate and we left with chilly temperatures into this weekend but we are noticing that along the bay. 70s today quickly turn into 50s today . it will take a little bit but we will warm back up and see sunnier skies and to mid next week. april is national donate life month and today is national living dollar day . it specifically highlights those who have given one of their kidneys are part of the liver to help somebody regain normal life shawn chitnis shares the story of this east bay man , he did that earlier this year and is already having a huge change in his in someone else's life, as well.

>> i knew i had to do it and i had to become an organ donor. and i cannot imagine anything more satisfying than getting to be an organ donor and enjoy it in life. >> reporter: he has worked for years at donor network west in san ramon. they are a federally designated organization identifying organs available to help people in need around northern california. >> i knew the need was there and i think we all know. the need is there. what really put me over the edge , what made me realize i needed to do this, was getting more information about how safe it was. >> reporter: this job constantly reminds him about the impact of donating life . including this wall in the office, which celebrates gave to donor network west in their first year. with a butterfly for each donation. he is also on the board of advisors for the national kidney foundation. >> i thought about her every day before he went to sleep and

i thought about her every day when i woke up. >> reporter: earlier he became a living donor after learning he could help a woman he did not know living on the other side of the country. three months later, he cannot stop thinking about the impact it is having on her life , and his own. >> i hope i have given her time with her family and i hope that i have given her equality of life back and , i know she thinks of me , probably as much as i think of her. >> reporter: several weeks later all he knows is that is kidney went to a 42-year-old woman in new york. >> i feel so happy every day. thinking of that. thinking about this woman i don't know. knowing that she has a new lease on life. and she gets to enjoy this kidney that i really was not even using. >> reporter: while the process takes time and plenty of preparation, eventually leading to surgery and recovery, it was all worth it for him . and he hopes others will consider the first step in donating life. >> we all of the power to save someone's life.

it is 9:11 in the morning. let's get a check in what is happening around the bay area today. in oakland, ahead of asian-american pacific islander heritage month, the mayor is sorting a kickoff event for a special competition called the national sunshine mental health cup . in a minute the mayor will be speaking alongside mental health associations for chinese communities at the pacific renaissance area. in oakland today, the oakland airport commission is deciding whether to add san francisco bay to the airports title. airport officials hope the move will boost travelers. but some in san francisco are against it. the san francisco city attorney says he is even ready to sue if the vote passes. many travelers are not fans of the name change either. >> call it oakland bay area airport. leave san francisco

breed is expected to make an appearance at the two-story space and a lot of people hoping this revitalizes that area. it will be open wednesday through sunday and will feature 11 places to eat and drink , including a bakery and cooking school. it is another one day for us today in the bay area with 80s in the forecast throughout the santa clara valley. upper 70s all the way into los gatos with low 70s there redwood city. it is cooler along the coast. half moon bay topping off in the 50s and we will see 60s into san francisco this afternoon but no matter where you live in the bay whether you are in one country , we are above average. high pressure has been inland and that has been keeping us warm and dry. but that will not be the case this weekend. a cold front is moving its way in and that will cooler temperatures down quick into our saturday set up. it will also increase our chance of rain right around the corner. that happens as we head into late friday night, early saturday morning. i am here to break it apart so you are prepared. it is interesting. today we are seeing partly

cloudy skies this morning and it clears up a lot into the afternoon hours today and we are left with clear skies overnight tonight. gearing up for a blanket of clouds roll in for a friday forecast. with gusty conditions ahead of the cold front that comes in late friday night. this was in slowly , you see the center of the area of low pressure offshore. swirling in rain overnight for friday heading into early saturday morning. we will wake up to wet roads saturday and lingering showers all throughout the afternoon hours on saturday. and that will last into sunday. as the system swirls and more moisture into our sunday morning. in total, we will see close to an inch of rain on average. and less than that throughout most of the bay area but it is worth noting that this is a very active storm around the corner. let's look at what is happening heading into this weekend. we know it will be wet saturday and sunday but the storm starts to decay and we are left with drier conditions and partly cloudy skies into monday. tuesday and wednesday next week, sunny and 70s will return for the inland areas.

voices and challenge stereotypes. the curator of the exhibit has her own story and spoke to loureen ayyoub about the importance of providing a space for black artists. >> reporter: coming up, it is hard work but for the curator, it is worth it. she goes to work every day knowing she is one of the rare few, black women, in positions of leadership in museums. but it makes herof experiences. all at once. and i think not only in the ways of which you are seeing on the walls but also the folks who work here. i think that my presence here allows the same black girl to say, i get to make new knowledge in the world and gather these things together and think of how they are connected thematically. >> reporter: one such theme is the diversity of the black experience. as displayed in the latest art exhibition entitled, unruly navigations. as she

explained some of the unique elements of each display, such as this assortment of black licorice, available to observe and taste, she wanted to emphasize how this simplicity of common items, even candy, can provide a deeper perspective on racial perception and the journey of movement . >> i was hoping to provide a platform for artists that are really thinking about how you move through the complications of history. whether it be national or international history or personal history. >> reporter: in many ways her role at the use some of african the aspirin san francisco is making its own history. according to a mellon foundation survey, only 4% of curators in the u.s. museums are black. within that small percentage, black female curators make up an even smaller fraction. that is why when visitors experience the museum, whether through exhibits or art opportunities, it brings her great joy. >> being part of this total building from the exhibits
