heightened alert. israel and the u.s. preparing for an imminent attack in iran -- from iran in retaliation for a strike that killed two generals. stunning revelations. shohei ohtani's former interpreter accused of pilfering $16 million from the baseball star. how prosecutors say he pulled it off. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning reaction is pouring in over the death of o.j. simpson. the onetime football star turned his talents on the field into a prominent career as a pitchman, sportscaster, and actor before it all came crashing down after he was accused of a double murder. and his fall from grace did not end there. naomi ruchim is joining us now with how many are now remembering simpson's really complicated life. >> reporter: that's right. good morning to you. family members say o.j. simpson was surrounded by his children and grandchildren when he died at the age of 76 following a

battle with cancer. his agent said simpson suffered from prostate cancer. during his life, o.j. simpson's image spanned from a revered athlete to the villain in his own story. for many americans, the reaction to o.j. simpson's death has been as complicated as his legacy. >> i'm not shedding any tears. >> definitely devastated that he passed away. >> reporter: simpson, nicknamed "the juice" was a star running back winning the 1968 heisman trophy before going onto a hall of fame career with the buffalo bills. >> he flowed through the air like he was walking on water. >> reporter: off the field he was a commentator, pitchman, and film star. but it all came crashing down with the brutal 1994 slayings of his ex-wife nicole brown simpson and her friend ronald goldman. millions of americans watched the slow-moving police chase of simpson's white ford bronco and the televised legal showdown

that followed dubbed the trial of the century. >> not guilty of the crime of murder. >> reporter: the case and the not guilty verdict has divided the country to this day. >> i do believe in my heart that he was guilty of the crime. >> a jury spoke and he was acquitted. >> simpson was ordered to pay millions to the victims' family in a separate civil trial. he later spent nearly a decade behind bars for a 2008 conviction that stemmed from an armed confrontation with sports memorabilia dealers in las vegas. >> my health is good. obviously i'm dealing with issues. >> reporter: aside from his social media presence, simpson's final years were spent largely out of the spotlight. in a statement, ronald goldman's father and sister said that o.j. simpson's death, the hope for true accountability has ended. the family also said they will continue to advocate for the rights of victims and survivors. anne-marie? >> naomi ruchim in new york. thank you so much. turning now to this round of powerful storms sweeping up the

east coast. two confirmed tornadoes touched down in florida yesterday. a door camera captured video of the storm coming in. the relentless rain is now pounding western pennsylvania, triggering dangerous flash flooding, water rescues, and evacuations. it's moving into the northeast today with pounding rain and powerful winds. here's cbs' tom hanson. we have a confirmed tornado. holy [ bleep ] -- >> reporter: this homeowner capturing a tornado moving toward his neighborhood outside of st. augustine, florida. the storm sending backyard furniture flying across yards. in tallahassee police pulling three people from rising floodwaters. but west in slidell, louisiana, the damage far more severe. >> big, big tornado. >> reporter: after an ef2 tornado with winds over 120 miles per hour blew through the city, ripping the roof off this apartment complex. workers clearing fallen 100-foot

trees ripped from their roots. >> it sounds like a freight train when it hits. >> reporter: terrified employees of eco builders somehow walked away unharmed from the mangled remnants of their building. >> within seconds of making it in, it took the shop. >> reporter: sheriff randy smith is amazed there were no serious injuries. >> this is the worst that i've seen from a tornado standpoint here in our parish. >> reporter: more than half of residents of slidell are without power. schools are also closed. and farther west in kirbyville, texas, several horses rescued from a corral. their owner using a boat to get them to safety. and back here in slidell, residents tell us they rarely ever see tornadoes. but cbs news analyzed data from the national weather service over the past 50 years and found tornadoes are actually happening earlier and more frequently. tom hanson, cbs news, slidell, louisiana. mounting tensions in the middle east.

the u.s. and israel are on high alert for potential attack from iran or its proxies that could come any day. prime minister benjamin netanyahu says the jewish state is preparing for scenarios while keeping up its war in gaza. the u.s. state department has restricted u.s. government staff and their families from personal travel outside tel aviv, jerusalem, and beersheeva in southern israel. and iran has vowed revenge on israel after a deadly strike on its embassy compound in syria last week. the israeli military says it is constructing a new land crossing from israel into northern gaza to enable more aid to flow directly to civilians in the areas that have been challenging for trucks to access. residents of one of the kibbutz hit on october 7th held a somber passover sader ahead of the holiday which commemorates the biblical story of the jewish exodus from slavery in egypt. >> granted freedom so cruelly taken for them. hasn't the time come for the

whole world to also shout. let my family go. let our people go. >> as for the hostage cease-fire talks, hamas told mediators it was unable to track down 40 israeli hostages who meet the criteria raising fears more may be dead than publicly known. and coming up on "cbs mornings," general cq brown jr., chairman of the joint chiefs, will join us to talk about the war and concerns about it widening across the region. embattled house speaker mike johnson is set to meet with former president donald trump in florida today. johnson, who is facing the threat of being ousted by republican representative marjorie taylor greene, will join trump for what's being called a major announcement on election integrity. johnson has offered greene a seat on his so-called kitchen cabinet advisory group. the former interpreter for l.a. dodgers player shohei ohtani is expected to surrender to authorities today on federal

bank fraud charges. he is accused of stealing more than $16 million from the baseball star to cover up illegal gambling debts. cbs' adam yamaguchi has more on the evidence including text messages. >> reporter: federal prosecutors laid out in detail how ippei mizuhara allegedly fleeced millions from the l.a. dodgers superstar shohei ohtani. >> mr. mizuhara had unique access to mr. ohtani's finances. mr. mizuhara used and abused that position of trust in order to plunder mr. ohtani's bank account to the tune of over $16 million. >> reporter: according to the complaint filed in the central district of california, these texts were sent between mizuhara and the bookie starting at the end of 2021. or about january 15th, 2022, he said i lost it all, [ bleep ]. can he bump me 50k, that will be the last if i lose it.

the u.s. attorney said mizuhara used his position of trust to steal. >> mr. ohtani is considered a victim in this case. >> an absolute rocket! >> reporter: ohtani inked a $700 million ten-year deal with the dodgers last december. mizuhara had been by the player's side as his voice for years. >> what is fair to say is that mr. mizuhara was the gatekeeper for mr. ohtani's finances. >> reporter: irs special agent in charge tyler hatcher said mizuhara identified himself as ohtani to bank officials. how did he go back impersonating -- go about impersonating ohtani? >> basically he was with him everywhere, and when you have that kind of access you're going to know the answers to questions. >> reporter: last month the dodgers fired mizuhara. then ohtani read a statement with a new interpreter. >> i'm saddened and shocked that someone who i trusted has done this. >> reporter: meanwhile, on the field there's no appearance that this has had any impact on ohtani as he seems to be living up to the dodgers' lofty expectations. adam yamaguchi, cbs news, los

angeles. kansas city chiefs wide receiver rashee rice turned himself in to police more than a week after he was allegedly involved in a six-car accident that injured four people. rice has admitted that he was driving a lamborghini last month that dallas police say was speeding with another car when they caused a chain-reaction collision. police issued an arrest warrant wednesday for rice and the other driver on several charges including aggravated assault. he was released on a $40,000 bond. coming up, an 85-year-old woman is being hailed a hero for shooting a home intruder to death. and spelling out the situation. how stranded men on a remote island caught the attention of rescuers. rescuers. if you have wet amd, you never want to lose sight of the things you love. some things should stand the test of time. long lasting eylea hd could significantly improve your vision

this week a u.s. navy aircraft spotted the word "help" spelled out in palm leaves on the beach. the coast guard picked them up on tuesday. an 85-year-old woman shot and killed a home intruder and more reaction on arizona's abortion ban. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the arizona republic" reports senate candidate kari lake released a video outlining her views on abortion. lake said the state supreme court's decision to reinstate a civil war-era law banning nearly all abortions is out of line with what people in arizona want. she reiterated her opposition to abortion but said that she's against a national ban. she said there should be exceptions for cases of rape, incest, and to save a mother's life. when she ran for governor in 2022 lake supported reinstating the 1864 abortion law. meanwhile, vice president kamala harris is set to visit arizona today as part of the biden campaign's focus on reproductive rights. woman's request to be released from a psychiatric hospital was denied a decade after she stabbed a classmate to please the fictional character slender man. morgan geyset was 12 when she and another girl lured a classmate to a park in 2014. she's now 21. she seriously wounded the classmate after stabbing her 19 times. yesterday a judge denied her request to be released. her accomplice in the attack was released from the hospital three years ago. and "the idaho statesman" says an 85-year-old woman killed an intruder. authorities say she was sleeping when derek condon broke into her home last month. he pointed a gun, hit her, and handcuffed her to a chair. when he went downstairs, she grabbed her gun after being threatened, she shot and killed him. he returned fire striking a woman several times. she was rescued about ten hours later.
