after years of waiting, a legendary san francisco bar welcomes customers to its new location. celebrations in san francisco go back to the roots of the city council the official event at golden gate park. oakland it was baseball team is sprucing up its future home in a neglected neighborhood. looking at all the people who have committed a beautiful saturday to coming out and hanging out at the park is pretty incredible. the morning, it is sunday april 21st and i am shawn chitnis. we start with a developing story in southern california. at least 15 people have been injured in a accident at the universal studios theme park. officials responded to the scene around 9:00 last night . according to the l.a. county sheriff's office there was a mechanical failure involving one of the cars traveling down a hill. over reports that it may have been a break issue. the victim

suffered minor injuries. the sheriff's office is investigating. universal studios said it is working to understand what happened leading up to the accident. good morning , forecast for mostly clear skies today including at the shoreline as high pressure begins to build in and as high pressure builds in, temperatures will come up just that much over yesterday's highs. we will be in the low to mid 80s in the warmest spots inland today. and then as we get close to the weekend, it looks like we have a chance of light showers, actually moving into the bay area but that is not until friday. in the meantime, sunshine and plenty of it . go out and have a great sunday. or whether later but first let's get the news. one of san francisco's oldest lgbtq+ bars welcomed patrons back last night for the first time in years. the stud first opened its doors in 1966 in the south of market neighborhood. known for its themed parties including dragon and burlesque shows as well as community events. it me down the street in 1987 to 9th in harrison where it stood until may 2020, and was forced to

close because of the pandemic. that was until last night when the bar reopened at his latest location. amanda hari was there and has a preview of what comes next. >> welcome to the stud. >> reporter: a moment for use in the making. lgbtq bar, the stud, reopening at a new location in the soma. >> all men. all women. and all the rest of us. >> reporter: the sisters of prefectural indulgence, blessing 1123 folsom before the first patrons walked inside. john, was the first person in line. he said he has been saturday that's supporting the stud for years. >> it has been a great party and a good time and lots of good people and it has been fun. every time. >> it is wonderful. >> reporter: this is one of the

co-owners. he said the collective ownership group decided to close early in the pandemic. >> if we had tried to stay we would've ended up with a lot of small businesses in debt. >> reporter: he said over the last four years, they have been hosting events and selling t-shirts. all in hopes of collecting enough money to reopen a new location. finally, they bought this space, that used to be a sports bar. >> there is a commercial kitchen bacteria. that we need to remove. there is no need to have food in the stud. >> reporter: they will transform the area that used to be a kitchen into a stage. >> we have to raise money and we are essentially a nonprofit and we make no money off of the bar at all. what we make goes into the bar. we have been really reliant on the community to help us when we need them and they have come through. we are very close to hitting our goal and raising the final $75,000 we need to build our stage and bring dragged back. >> reporter: once the stage is built they will host drag

shows and create a drag school. the bar has been in existence for nearly 60 years at different locations in san francisco. supervisor aaron peskin was at the reopening, to support the legacy business. >> the stud is synonymous with san francisco. this is one of the great institutions >> reporter: and sf is part of what makes the stud great . and he is happy to see the business reopen on folsom street. >> we don't believe the narrative that san francisco is over and there is a doom loop . san francisco is one of the greatest cities in the world and she is not going anywhere. >> this space is double the size of the old location. they say they are excited to have more people coming and visiting. >> thousands came out to enjoy saturday's beautiful weather on 4/20. this was a scene at dolores park and that is where we saw the biggest crowds after the city announced it was canceling its official 4/20 the liberation at hippie hill in golden gate park. there were plenty of people out on hippie hill for an unofficial gathering. the crowds were smaller than usual. da lin was

there. ♪ >> reporter: peace, love, and a lot of weed on hippie hill. ♪ >> just one love. >> reporter: young and old they started showing up early saturday afternoon. no one really knew what to expect this year since organizers did not have the money and canceled the yearly celebration. >> we like it organic. >> reporter: that is what a lot of people said. they liked the nonstructured environment. no fencing and no gates and no large corporations. >> i prefer the organic feel . >> reporter: she and her friend, visit hippie hill on 4/20 from every year from utah for the last 15 years. >> we stumbled upon a one year and is so much fun we said let's do it every year. >> reporter: they said not having an official event brings them back to how they used to celebrate cannabis. it is more of a community atmosphere.

>> everybody seems happy and the drum circle is going and people were dancing. >> people gathering, not regulated , not ruled to death. >> reporter: but there needs to be a balance. >> we don't want to get too crazy and shootings and that has happened. we have seen some fights down here that are not a good. >> reporter: the this 4/20 festival's drew thousands and thousands of people. there would be live music and dozens of vendors. but without an official event this year, the city partnered to offer free sporting activities at robin williams meadow. canvas lovers are encouraged to take part. some believe it is a way of crowd control by activating the space. >> pickup soccer but we have cornhole on the west lawn. we have some bocce in the back corner. we have all kinds of fun stuff. if you want to get on the hill and do their thing and come down and hang out, we are all for it. >> reporter: the city assigned officers and medics to keep people safe. volunteers also hand out free water. it is not

all pot smokers hanging out on hippie hill. some people tell me they do not smoke at all. and there is this family , three generations, just enjoying a lively day in san francisco. >> we always come here with him anyway. it is a normal, weekend for us with a little extra. and they are in town from alaska visiting, the grandparents. >> reporter: no festival, no problem. they like how it is turning out and they will be back next year. >> it is a really nice good live like the old days. >> reporter: as of late saturday afternoon authorities say no reports of injuries or arrests. oakland was baseball team and dozens of volunteers celebrated earth day by helping to get reminded park opening karen uk. they spent the day picking up trash and giving the field a good power wash. john ramos has more.

>> reporter: this earth day project in oakland was about more than just cleaning up a city park. it was about starting something new. >> reporter: a group of two dozen years gathered at the park in oakland to collect trash, power wash per ground equipment and at some color. the park and gotten pretty run down over the years but it is seeing a lot of changes lately. thanks largely to the many new housing developments that are popping up in the area. >> there is definitely a number of residents who are excited, really to help take care of a spot that has been a little neglected. for many years. >> reporter: the single biggest change is happening now. brand-new baseball field is being laid out. soon to be the home of the oakland ballers. the new independent league team created as a response to the departure of the a's. laura, the teams chief of staff, hopes the ballers $1.5 million investment in the park , will help revitalize the entire neighborhood. >> being able to do something

for the community, by the community, is critical. for me as a person and for us as an organization. just looking at all the people who have committed a beautiful saturday to coming out and cleaning up this park is pretty incredible. >> reporter: even before they play a game the team has a built-in fan base from the surrounding housing complexes. many of the cleanup volunteers came from the apartments right across the street from the park. >> i think we are all fans already and everyone is excited for the first game coming up. i think in june is the first one we are excited to see the progress of the park get built slowly and surely. we will be out here supporting. >> we are super excited to see the transformation happening. i want to say so quickly but it has been a lot of work and the long time coming. >> it was pretty desert and not a lot of population here and now we are seeing a lot more families enjoying the park. which is fantastic. >> we are going to make it something that oakland, especially west oakland

deserves. for too long we have been divested from , and this will be something that everybody can really benefit from. >> reporter: one man who lives in the areas as well they may welcome the new ballpark , some people are leery about how all the new investment will affect the neighborhood. especially black residents, who have lived there for a long time. >> anytime you do something new there are always people in the neighborhood, who have lived here for a long time, it is scary. take over your home or your property. because we have a project coming in. the project is what you see behind you. and the people who were there , i don't know , are they on the street? or are they moved to a different area? >> reporter: it has been the dilemma for oakland. how to bring in something new without pushing out what was already there. in this case, the changes represent a new direction, a new focus for oakland baseball fans , who know exactly what it feels like to be pushed away. >> the teams cleanup efforts

comes days after oakland city council agreed to invest $1.6 million in two renovations at the park. in the south bay, 20 new ballots found in the district 16 congressional race could potentially break the tie for second place. candidates evan low and joe simitian have earned about 30,000 votes each . and it looked like they were both headed toward a three-way runoff election, with the leader in the race, sam liccardo. but now one of his former staff members is calling for the district to look at 20 ballots that were, " improperly excluded from the count. the county's registrar said they are reviewing them, but it is too soon to tell if they can add them to the final count. a 22-year-old uc berkeley student , has won the seat on berkeley city council making a the first undergraduate to fill the role. she received about 60% of the vote, defeating her opponent for the seat by 93 votes. in a statment on her x account the newly elected city

welcome back. it is 6:14. this is a live look at san jose. plenty of birthday events across the bay area. that were happening on saturday. this was in oakland were hundreds of volunteers came to the mlk shoreline near the airport to plant one of the trees in the area. over in concord, people were picking up trash at newhall community park, all organized by a group of people called friends of concord creeks. they say it is a good way to teach people the importance of keeping the creek litter free. >> all of the native animals, plants and animals that live in the watershed, we want to give them habitat , where they can thrive. >> the event was just one of nine other earth day events happening this weekend. for

warming trend continues into monday. and we will cool it down tuesday through thursday, distinctly cooler. we will be well below seasonal averages. the numbers inland will be in the 60s , tuesday, wednesday, thursday. we get a chance of light showers moving into the bay area by friday. we cannot keep any kind of a consistent warming trend going. today will be nice in tomorrow not bad. here is prove. forecast for morgan hill, 82 degrees today. 78 at fremont. 76 at a word. the coastline will be chilly. it will be sunny in the east bay and antioch up to 84 degrees. livermore at 83 and pleasanton lives up to its name. vallejo, 79. benicia, 81. much of marin in the 70s but at mill valley, 72. in san rafael, 76. nevada very pleasant today. 80 degrees and in napa, 81. beautiful day for the one country. north of that,

ukiah and cloverdale and clearlake in the 80s today. windsor hits 82. in the city forecast, everybody looks pretty much the same and the numbers very just a little bit. we all get a chance of light showers moving in on friday. but sunday, monday, tuesday, sunny for the most part. clouds return monday night. for the north bay, nice today and we cool it down midweek. and for the east bay, we will be in the 80s today, tuesday we cool it down and next chance for rain coming into the east bay by friday. that also holds true for the coastline. if you really cool week ahead . by the time we get to tuesday. in the meantime if you like warm weather, you must enjoy today and he must enjoy tomorrow. that is a command. that is weather. let's get back to the news. major repairs and the north bay. westbound highway 37 is shut down between valejo and sears point. the road is expected to reopen early

monday morning. caltrans crews will return and do the same thing next weekend. that will be followed up with two more weekend shutdowns, but in the eastbound direction. the golden gate ferry has suspended service between sausalito and san francisco this weekend. a routine inspection turned up some kind of structural problem with the sausalito area yesterday. the ferry service is running golden gate transit buses. coming up in sports, it was a day one a player will never forget. plus, already a big deal to have your own bubblehead day. patrick bailey made sure even if an outside the

joining us on the sunday. i am shawn chitnis. opening statements begin tomorrow and former president trump's hush money trial. it comes after a jury was seated last week. from plan to hold a campaign rally aside in north carolina but it was canceled. wendy gillette has more from new york. >> this is donald trump, your favorite president of all time, hopefully. >> reporter: trump supporters in wilmington, north carolina, were hoping to see this last night. the, they heard he was canceling his planned rally because of bad weather. >> they really would prefer we not come in because there is a certain danger to all of this. >> reporter: he promised to reschedule and the crowd quickly filed out. the event would have been a break from the trial that is now occupying most of the former president time. much to his dismay. >> this is really a concerted witch-hunt. >> reporter: the jury city last week into the future, investment banker, and corporate lawyer. they will hear opening statements starting tomorrow morning. >> it sets the scene for the trial. it sets the tone unless

two of the victims were pronounced deceased at the scene. this includes an eight-year-old female and a five-year-old male. who are siblings of each other. >> police say a suspect drove into a wall with the car coming to a stop 25 feet inside the building. they say they have video footage of the woman leaving a nearby tavern, shortly before the crash. to a developing story out of memphis. eight people were shot in a city park last night . police say two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene. officers responded to the shooting just before 7:30 p.m. police say a were close to 300 people gathered for a block party. they initially found five victims with gunshot wounds . but other victims arrived at hospitals and private vehicles. no one is under arrest. the memphis interim chief of police says, they are looking for at least

two suspects. it is unclear what led up to the shooting and the investigation is ongoing. organized labor is marking new inroads in the south after a breakthrough by the united auto workers . the union had accused of volkswagen a violating u.s. and german labor laws with aggressive antiunion tactics, which a company denies. it all came down to the workers were , after previous bids to join the union in 2014 and 2019 and failed. we have the latest on the story. >> reporter: auto workers at a volkswagen assembly plant in chattanooga, tennessee, revved up after head historic win. >> i am about to cry. 14 years. this is my third union drive here and we finally got it. >> reporter: last night they voted to join the united auto workers after two previous organizing attempts fell short. 73% of workers voting, yes. that is the first in the south. >> to the pundits, have said

to me repeatedly, before we announced this campaign, you cannot win in the south. but you all said, watch this. you all move the mountain. >> reporter: this picture comes after large gains one by workers of the big three automakers. what does this say about the perception of organized labor in america? >> i think this is going to be a major boost for unions in america, more generally. it is such a spectacular win . that it makes it easier for the uaw to organize at the 11 remaining nonunion automakers. >> reporter: the uaw gains appear to be part of a renaissance movement for unions. a year ago the so-called, summer of labor for hollywood actors and writers las vegas hotel workers, winning big.

>> the next test for the uaw comes in may when work is a two mercedes-benz plants in alabama will decide whether to unionize. people evacuated from a part of a town in ohio after a train derailed last night. three train cars the tracks in the town of wyoming at around 8:00 p.m. originally, hazmat crews told nearby residents to shelter in place. those orders were lifted after finding the spilled contents of one of the derailed cars were nonhazardous plastic pellets. one of the other cars was filled with a liquid that did not leak and the other was empty. csx is currently on the scene, trying to clear the area that is a company that has those trains and it says it hopes to have this particular train back on track later today. coming up. we take you to the central valley where a crucial canal failed and why the price replacement is already facing the same problem. >> what are you picking a fight with fellow farmers? and my responses, what are we supposed to do?

into the east bay by friday. it also holds true for the coastline. fairly cool week ahead, by the time we get to tuesday. in the meantime if you like one mother, you must enjoy today and you must enjoy tomorrow. that is a command. that is the weather. let's get back to the noise. it is an expensive fix for a serious problem. land is sinking so fast and the central valley since a crucial canal failed. the new canal they just built to replace it is already sinking as well. we are talking about the canal into larry county, which runs along the east side of the san joaquin valley. it is a lifeline for many farmers and communities. the system starts at millerton lake north of fresno and from there it runs 152 miles to the south , powered entirely by gravity. but gravity means going downhill and that has gotten complicated. decades of groundwater pumping have caused the valley floor to sink in the canal with it. >> to convey this water south

through the section we have lost over 60% of the carrying capacity. >> we first surge of the solution in august of 2022. it is a new canal built right alongside the old one, only it is higher so the water can still flow downhill. that need to know will go into service in the next couple of weeks. and is wilson walker shows us, it is already facing the very same challenge as the last one. >> you are looking in the foreground the old canal and just over that dirt pile, is the new canal. this is typically an image that people look at and think my gosh, what kind of problem do you have to solve out here? >> reporter: stretching out across 10 miles is a quiet california megaproject , that is just about finished . it is the new canal. >> that is 10 or 12 feet higher

than the old. >> reporter: the old canal bit in the 1940s was a water disaster in slow motion. syncing with the valley floor since the time it was built . it was raised in the 70s but at the subsidence has continued, and with capacity cut more than 60% the only option was a new canal but it faces the same old problem. >> we have poster boards for you, wilson. this will blow your mind. >> reporter: johnny's chief operating officer of the water authority. about to celebrate the grand opening of this $300 million lifeline. for 1 million acres of farmland and a quarter million people. >> now we have encountered a new area of subsidence between avenue 136 and basically the river which is just about three miles upstream. that is creating a capacity problem in our new canal. years of planning , tricky financing , and on day one we are facing about a 400 cfs capacity

problem on day one of the new canal. >> reporter: that is sinking threatening the very project was supposed to keep the water moving. >> it is not rocket science with the causes, it is over draft of groundwater. >> we grow crops to feed the cows that makes the note that makes land o lakes butter in a local plant. >> reporter: he is a third-generation dairy farmer who relies on the surface deliveries through the water. that is not the case for his neighbors. >> investment companies are coming in to put in orchards and vineyards . annexing you know, they are drilling deep, deep wells. where my wells were three and 400 foot. they are drilling 1200 to 1800 feet drawing the deepest water. >> it is a touchy subject because we are talking about neighbors. were talking about friends and people that we have all known each other for many, many years.

>> reporter: for the water authority the sinking canal is forcing the issue and they are asking the state for a kind of emergency intervention on groundwater usage in this basin. >> i hear that quite a bit saying , why are you picking a fight with fellow farmers? and my responses, what are we supposed to do? what are we supposed to do? this is the most important infrastructure facility on the east side of the san joaquin valley and it is being harmed and damaged every day. >> reporter: >> the challenges in a sense are actually pitting farmer gets farmer in a way. because, who is pointing fingers at who? the challenges are deep. >> reporter: deep enough to cut into the capacity of this emergency subsidence fix before it even opens. and what scares him even more is that california does not have a plan to reach groundwater sustainability. until the year 2040. >> our problem is that has to be addressed really soon. in order to realize the full capacity of moving water

through the new canal, this capacity problem has to be addressed immediately. >> reporter: the new canal was built with features subsidence in mind. the giants life is that pull the water beneath the roadways, that would allow them to raise this canal in the future without having to lift all of the bridges , like they had to do back in the 70s. thinking about the canal sinking and the landscape sinking from everything subsiding. really forces you to use your imagination when thinking about states water challenges. this massive project will open to a number of questions, as california's water landscape changes in more ways than one. >> wilson tells us the ribbon-cutting and the flooding of the new canal will come in the next couple of weeks. the state is expected to hold a hearing on the groundwater issues in the tule water basin in september. it is the end of an era for bart is the transit agency finishes phasing out a fleet of train cars will carry
