a community plushed with excitement. the big celebration for san francisco's newest lavish laboratory. lucky to be alive. the family sharing their story after the semi truck smashes into their home while they're sleeping. we'll begin only in san francisco. the celebration for a toilet in the new bathroom. >> you may remember they made international headlines over the hefty price tag. the city said the small restroom would cost roughly $1.7 million to build, but ended up cut dramatically to $200,000. da lin was at the celebration with a look at a much cheaper bathroom. >> people made a stank about it when they first learned it would cost $1.7 million to build a small bathroom like this one here. the public outcry forced the city to flush that idea down the toilet, so they came up with this. it's a

sell brace fit for the most infamous toilet. one that almost costs the price of a house. >> let's hear it for our not $1.7 million bathroom. >> reporter: and so event organizers decided to have some fun with it. everything toilet themed. even this dad renamed american standard at least for the day. >> we couldn't get toto here. >> reporter: organizing the toilet bowl celebration. >> when everybody laughs at you, you've got to take the power back and laugh at yourself. >> reporter: leslie says san francisco deserves all the things they got when the city announced the $1.7 million price tag. people thought it was the perfect example of government waste. >> it is preposterous because the plumbing was on the ground when they built this place out. >> i thought it was a little ridiculous. >> everyone did. that's crazy. >> reporter: a private company ended up donating the bathroom.

but the cost still added up to $200,000. the city says union workers would have to connect the plumbing and do a bunch of stuff to get it ready. i asked the folks who used it how it went. >> i'm flushed with excitement that it will get a ten out of ten for me. >> it's great and a relief. and that we won't have to go to the stress. >> it is lovely, very clean. >> it is a relief. >> and there is no more bathroom jokes about san francisco. at least for a short while. >> this is a great ending to our story. >> i haven't covered too many bathroom stories, 22 years in the business. actually this is the only one, so i have to give it a try. my review, strong flush, very functional. got the business done. >> and early celebrations will continue for earth day. across

the bay area, many people have been planting trees and cleaning up parks, but the others have come up with unique ways to celebrate. along the peninsula, it was an earth day event like no other. the battle between sheep and robots over who can mow the best. john ramos has more on the competition. >> reporter: the purpose of earth day is to get people to think about ways to protect the planet. in a town like atherton, that will boil down the fight to mow your lawn. at the earth day festival, they wanted to promote the benefits of using environmentally friendly lawn equipment. that's where the friendliness ended on the other side of the park, a battle of ai verses used, sheep verses robot put to a vote. >> this seems like it's funny. it's not. it's very serious. >> reporter: actually it wasn't serious at all. the

competition for ecofriendly lawn care pitted a flock of sheep against a new autonomous lawnmower. the mower acts like an outdoor roomba cutting the grass automatically using a gps sensing tower. >> what it does, it talks to the gps to the satellite and talks to the mower and the home. the base station. then you draw points along the line. you close the points out and it will make a little square and knows where to go. >> reporter: they make almost no noise and they will automatically find their way back to the charging station when the battery gets low. >> the head looks like the first part that looks like a car, but also kind of like a black panther or something like that. >> reporter: and it causes a lot less shock to the normal weekly mowing. >> with the robot, you come a couple days a week. no cost because they're running out of battery and they do no damage, in fact the lawns are much healthier. >> reporter: but not everyone is sold on the technology.

>> you'll want to watch me? look at that. here we go. vote for the sheep. sheep mowers will kick the robot grass. >> reporter: and thaw have had enough of the robot. the uc davis professor says her sheep will have something that trumps high-tech. they're cute and kind of fun to watch. >> let's look, let's look at the people who are watching, photographing the sheep. and oh, there's the robotic mower. do you see anyone? is it hidden in a corner with no one watching? >> reporter: they could graze on the terrain. but it was the cute factor that seem to be swaying the public vote. >> well, they're cuter. i mean if it has to be something cute for me in order to win because yeah, i like cute stuff. >> i just voted for the sheep, you know, obamacare begannic matter. >> reporter: the 8-year-old voted for the robot because he likes ai better than sheep. but he was wondering if there wasn't some way to combine the

two. >> you could always just get a robot or like a hybrid version of the sheep. and they could grow their fur faster. you could have infinite fur machine. they could last forever. >> reporter: u but this was no popularity contest. well actually it was. so it wasn't a big surprise when the votes were counted and the result was announced. >> the sheep verses robot competition is 20 to 103 and the sheep won. [ cheering ] >> by a lot. >> yeah, sheep. >> reporter: so score one for organic matter over metal. the sheep seem happy about it, but the robot sat quietly on the charging station, waiting, patiently waiting. >> the sheep verses robot contest is a way to remind people the state of california has banned gas powered lawn equipment effective july 1 of this year. bustling streets downtown san jose. this afternoon people

came out for viva calle, where they ride, bike, skate, walk, or just play in the streets. it's a chance for people to connect with other residents in their city. and they planted 35 trees in the area. >> it is such a fun way to get out, see a part of our city that we may drive by or we may not drive by, but they would see it in a different perspective as you would get to see a lot of people from different backgrounds, all hanging out, being friendly. >> and they were facing the chopping block last year due to city budget cuts. but the local officials adjusted their amount of days to keep the event going. be sure to tune in tomorrow for our cbs news bay area earth day special where we will look at how scientists and every day people here in the bay area are working together to protect the planet. our

streaming special will be on the news app and on pluto tv. a live look at sfo, the mayor touched down just hours ago, returning from her week long trip to china. she announced from beijing just days ago where they are coming to the san francisco zoo as a part of their diplomacy program. they also touted the trip as a chance to stimulate economic growth and to expand tourism in san francisco. >> and we are not at pre-pandemic levels for flights coming in from china, but last year we saw over $633 million in economic impact to the city from those tourists who came from china to the city. so we want to make sure we open up the door for folks to visit to have experiences in the city. >> they met with a number of chinese airlines, discussing plans to increase the number of flights from the region to san

francisco. other top stories we are following in the criminal trial against former president trump are set to begin tomorrow in new york. this is the first trial of a former president. trump faces 34 counts of falsifying business records as part of a hush money scheme involving former adult film actress, stormy daniels. on friday, they denied a request by trump's attorneys to delay the trial and move it out of new york city. the former president has said he is willing to take the stand in his own defense. more than a dozen people are hurt after a tram collision at universal studios in hollywood. it happened around 9:00 last night. the l.a. county sheriff's department says the mechanical failure caused the last car to crash into a rail. 15 people were taken to the hospital for minor injuries. back here in the bay area, a 22-year-old uc berkeley student has won a seat on berkeley city council. making her the first undergraduate to

a family is speaking out after a semi truck crashed into their home in stan stanislaus county. a man was sleeping when it all happened and his grandson was trapped in his room, but eventually he was

able to get out. an suv ran a stop sign, hit a semi truck, which lost control and crashed. two families are displaced. one family says they only received $600 from the red cross. >> and nobody helping yet as far as any type of government agency or their insurance. i mean what do they know? obviously it is not our fault. and i learned from nobody. >> the family feels it is lucky to be alive and staying at a hotel for now. the driver of the suv was taken to the hospital with a few broken bones, but expected to be okay. the semitruck driver is also okay. back here in the bay area, major road in the north bay is expected to reopen tomorrow morning all weekend long, westbound highway 37 has been shut down between vallejo and sears point for pavement repairs. cal tran says to expect another shutdown for next weekend. that will be followed up with two more weekend shutdowns. but those

will be in the eastbound direction. and right now, we don't really have to worry about rain when people could, you know, construction workers, they could pave the way. >> and they could construct to the heart content until friday and then it gets worse or maybe not. actually yesterday, there was a 60% chance on friday. now the later models are saying well, maybe 25%. >> that's a big drop. >> it is a big drop and it is also a ways away. anything could happen between now and friday. >> right. >> in the meantime it's not bad. today is nice and tomorrow will be nice too. we'll take you outside, blue skies around the bay area. just brilliant visibilities. the numbers, they are pretty much where they were yesterday and actually warmer in concord, it's 83. oakland is 71. livermore, 83 degrees right now. san francisco at 63. in santa rosa, it's 79. beautiful sunday underway with numbers, 9 degrees warmer in petaluma at this hour and warmed up 3 degrees in san francisco. by the coast, it's not a surprise with no big temperature swings u out here

and it is 8 degrees warmer as well, which will change tomorrow, but we do get one more warm day and that high pressure is going to subside as the trough and the big pool of cool air will work their way down from the gulf beginning on monday. do get a few low clouds by the day tomorrow in san francisco, so we would start out with a few low clouds along the coastline. but late in the day, they just get pulled in and they are covering a good deal of the coast by the time we would get to monday night. so for tomorrow, it is still nice. few clouds in the morning, then we top out near 90 degrees by 2 degrees in the afternoon. it will be a beautiful monday. so to sum it up, low pressure that's in the gulf and will change into a cutoff low off the central california shoreline. and by the time you would get later on in the week, the numbers will come down again because we've

had a little bit of a warm spell, only to have the temperatures fall like i said, which is going to happen again this week. we will be in the 80s today. back in the 60s by midweek. but the rain chance on friday that was at 60% is now down to 25. but it still looks like it will be cloudy on thursday and that will lead to a few light showers around the bay area. and to sum it up. one more warm day tomorrow. highs near 80 inland. then sharply cooler by the time we would get to tuesday with some drizzle along the shoreline. that cooling trend will continue through the end of the week and a chance for light showers are coming in by friday. but you know, generally, not so bad. overnight lows tonight, will be on the mild side. temperatures in the low 50s. the daytime highs will still be at 80 degrees out in the east bay at fairfield, antioch, livermore, even san jose will notch up at 80 degrees. they will all look the same with sunshine through wednesday and then clouds will
