former president. chaos at columbia. tensions rising at the ivy league campus as anti-israel protesters take over. jewish students are urged to go home, and the university now announcing changes. and rescue on camera. a group of good samaritans race to save a driver trapped in a burning car. . good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with donald trump's hush-money trial getting under way with opening statements. the presumptive gop presidential nominee has long tested the constraints of the law, the constitution, and general decorum throughout his business and political career. starting today, trump's fate will be in the hand of prosecutors, his attorneys, a judge, and 12 jurors. wendy gillette is joining us now from the courthouse in lower manhattan. wendy, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. it is very quiet right now here at the courthouse, but that is definitely going to change in

the next few hours. we are expecting a big crowd as this criminal trial gets under way. the first involving a sitting or former u.s. president. prosecutors in manhattan are getting ready to present their case against former president trump to a panel of seven men and five women jurors. >> the judge wants this to go as fast as possible. >> reporter: the former president faces 34 counts of falsifying business records. prosecutors accusehim of funneling hush money through former lawyer michael cohen to adult film star stormy daniels to hide an alleged affair before the 2016 presidential election. trump denies the affair and has pleaded not guilty. >> this is really a concerted witch hunt. >> reporter: the prosecution is expected to call "national enquirer" editor david pecker as the first witness. he's expected to testify about a negative stories about trump

during the campaign and suppress them. other witnesses include michael cohen and stormy daniels. the former president has also said he'd like to testify in his own defense. >> he has made so many social media posts that in cross-examination he could be shown to be totally inconsistent. i would never put him on the witness stand if he were my client. >> reporter: the trial has kept trump from the campaign trail. >> i think we're going to have to just do a rain check. i'm so sad. >> reporter: a planned return to the stage over the weekend in north carolina was thwarted by bad weather. and trump has another legal matter to contend with today -- new york state attorney general letitia james is asking a judge to reject a $175 million bond in his civil fraud case. that hearing is scheduled for later today. anne-marie? >> all right. wendy gillette in new york. thank you, wendy. the supreme court today will debate whether cities can punish people who are homeless. the oregon stay of grant's pass

had cracked down of homeless encampments by banning tents, blankets, and pillows from public parks. but a federal appeals court ruled under the constitution people who have nowhere else to go cannot be criminally charged. the justices must now decide whether it's unconstitutional to punish homeless people for doing things in public like sleeping that are necessary to survive. big security concerns at columbia university as the highly charged anti-israel protests continue, and jewish students prepare to celebrate the first night of passover. [ chants ] >> this morning the university president announced all classes today will be held virtually so they can figure out the next steps. public safety will double its presence on campus. a prominent rabbi at the school urged jewish students to leave the campus for the sake of their safety. but the jewish campus organization said jewish students should remain on campus, adding the city needs to do more to ensure their safety.

new york governor kathy hochul also weighed in saying students are free to protest under the first amendment, but threatening jewish students with violence or glorifying the terror of october 7th is anti-semitism. the chair of the house education committee sent a letter to columbia's president calling for the school to expel students and fire faculty involved in the protests. and the violence is not just confined to columbia. a jewish yale university student says that shy was attacked during -- she was attacked during an anti-israel protest on the new haven campus this weekend. the editor-in-chief of "the yale flee press" says she was covering the protests when she was surrounded by demonstrators and jabbed in the eye with a palestinian flag. yale says it's investigating the attack. president biden also sounded off on the alarming surge of anti-semitism on college campuses calling it reprehensible and dangerous. in his passover message, the president also doubled down on his support for israel saying

his administration is working around the clock to free the hostages still in captivity. and breaking overnight, we are just learning that the head of israeli military intelligence has resigned over the october 7th massacre. he's the first senior israeli figure to step down for failing to prevent the hamas attack. meanwhile, the idf launched a deadly series of air strikes on the city of rafah in southern gaza this weekend. the violence also flared in west bank. cbs' debora patta reports for jerusalem. >> reporter: rushed into this world far too early and already an orphan. this doctor works efficiently to help the baby girl breathe, her lungs not yet fully developed. her mother was six months pregnant when she was killed in an israeli air strike in rafah. miraculously, doctors managed to save the preterm infant. nobody else survived the hit on two houses. among the dead, 13 children.

the youngest just 2 years old. here israeli defense force soldiers prepare for a different mission, but this is not in gaza. its idf footage from the west bank city of where they killed in close combat. residents are cleaning up after the operation. what the israeli military does is using bulldozers to dig up the roads. you can see they've been completely destroyed, making sure that residents cannot move freely in the area. bulldozers also smashed through anything that stood in their way, homes and shops were damaged, pipes and power lines severed, cutting off water and electricity. the israeli military is in the global spotlight right now. a u.s. official told cbs news that since 2022 it's been investigating an idf unit of

ultra-orthodox soldiers stationed in the west bank, accused of human rights atrocities with an announcement expected this week. debora patta, cbs news, jerusalem. israeli and ukrainian leaders are praising the house of representatives for approving billions in foreign aid this weekend that will unleash a flood of american military equipment. it didn't happen without a fight from hard-right republicans that could cost the speaker his gavel. cbs' skyler henry reports. >> reporter: ukrainian president volodymer zelenskyy says the $95 billion bipartisan foreign aid package passed in the house on saturday will help keep the war with russia from expanding. >> this aid will strengthen ukraine and send the world a powerful signal it will not be the second afghanistan. >> reporter: there's more than $60 billion in assistance set aside for kyiv including nearly $14 billion to help ukraine buy

advanced weapons systems and defense equipment. >> the great news is this is finally happening. it should have happened six months ago. >> reporter: for months, hard-right members of the house vehemently opposed more aid for ukraine, including speaker mike johnson before he received the gavel. on saturday, more than half of house republicans voted no to the measure leaving johnson to rely on democratic support. now a small but growing number of republicans are openly calling to oust johnson, saying there should be more focus on domestic issues including the crisis at the border. >> he has completely betrayed republican voters all over the country, and he is absolutely working for the democrats. >> i don't walk around this building being worried about a motion to vacate. i have to do my job. we did. >> reporter: we should point out that there is a growing number of republicans and democrats for that matter who say that they are against any sort of effort to oust johnson. also, the house passed saturday

no serious injuries were reported. remarkable. well, the reason for a deadly crash at a children's birthday bash in michigan and a chicago officer gunned down after work. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "chicago tribune" reports an off-duty officer who was shot and killed had spoken last year at a memorial for a fallen officer. officer luis huesca was gunned down as he headed home after work at 3:00 in the morning sunday in the gage park neighborhood. authorities say when officers arrived at the scene, they found the 30-year-old with several gunshot wounds. he was rushed to the hospital but did not survive. officials have not released a motive, and mow no -- no suspect is in custody. "the "detroit free press" says a driver suspected of a deadly dui crash that killed two chirp may have been at a bar earlier. a car crashed into a boat club sunday where a birthday party was being held.

two young siblings, age 5 and 8, were killed. more than a dozen were injured. the driver of the car, a 66-year-old woman, was arrested for suspected drunk driving and is expected to face criminal charges. and "usa today" reports at least two people are dead and six injured after a shooting at a memphis block party. police found five victims with gunshot wounds when they responded to the scene shortly after 7:00 p.m. on saturday. one of the six surviving victims remains in critical condition. up to 300 people were at the party, but authorities confirm there was no permit for it. the interim police chief said at least two shooters were involved. so far no arrests. coming up next, former first lady michelle obama goes on a secret mission to a target store. the surprises she left behind.

check out this awesome moment caught on camera in australia. that is surfer gabriela bryan sharing a wave with a pod of dolphins. it happened as the 22-year-old surfer from hawaii clinched her first world championship tour event on sunday. she called the moment magical. taking a look at business headlines in cbs "moneywatch," the markets finished mixed friday dragging down -- dragged down by big tech stocks. the dow gained 211 points. the nasdaq lost 319, and the s&p 500 finished 43 points lower. tesla is recalling all cyber trucks made between november and april because of faulty accelerator pads. the recall affects almost 4,000 cars. the automaker is also slashing the prices of three of its five models and its full self-driving system. the system will now cost $8,000, down from $12,000.
