tornados tearing a path of destruction across the plains. forecasters issuing a rare high-risk weather warning for two states in the bull's-eye. israeli forces take control of a key gaza border crossing as hamas and israel go back and forth on a cease-fire deal. where things stand. and pomp and protests. the stars shine on fashion's biggest night as pro-palestinian protesters try to disrupt the met gala. captioning funded by cbs gala. well, good well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. breaking overnight, there's severe weather again in the central u.s. with reports of more than a dozen tornadoes touching down. millions of people are under tornado watches as forecasters issue a rare high-risk warning. in barnsdall, oklahoma, at least one person was killed and there are reports of injuries and heavy damage. search and rescue efforts are underway at the osage nation reservation in northeast oklahoma after a powerful storm ripped through the area.

>> pylons are coming down. there's a large tornado right up there. >> about 120 miles west of hennessey, a storm chaser described what was happening as a tornado crossed a highway. 30 miles away in covington, the national weather service said a storm produced tornados off and on for more than an hour. 50 miles to the west in okeene, a storm chaser spotted what appeared to be a tornado. and today the tornado risk moves into the ohio valley. nearly 30 million people are under a risk of severe storms from northern tennessee to southern michigan and large hail being the most common threat. then wednesday, a new severe weather system moves into the middle of the country. also breaking overnight, new developments in the israel/hamas war. israeli forces have taken control of the palestinian side of the rafah border crossing with egypt. israel pushed ahead with its ground assault on the southern city of gaza one day after a hamas rocket attack killed four israeli soldiers.

after hamas's abrupt about-face saying it will accept a cease-fire deal, israel says that deal is a far cry from what was discussed. cbs's jarred hill is here with the very latest. jarred, what's going on? >> good morning, anne-marie. we're learning this morning the israeli military sent tanks into rafah, part of what it's calling a limited operation to destroy hamas targets there. meanwhile allies are warning about the dangers of a broader operation. >> reporter: israeli strikes on the city of gaza in the city of rafah despite words by hamas of a cease-fire proposal. israel's war cabinet says what hamas has agreed to is, quote, far from meeting israel's core demands. still israel says it's sending a delegation to egypt to maximize the ability of reaching an agreement. >> reaching an agreement is the absolute best outcome not only

for the hostages but for the palestinian people, and we're not going to stop working toward that outcome. >> reporter: biden is reviewing the response after biden's 30-minute-long call with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. the president warned netanyahu that it puts a million innocent people at greater risk. israel dropped leaflets urging 100,000 people in parts of the study to evacuate ahead of the strikes. israel's defense forces say rafah is a hamas stronghold. >> end this war, save all the hostages. >> reporter: still pressure continues to mount in tel aviv as protesters called on netanyahu to accept a cease-fire deal and get the missing hostages back to their loved ones. >> all right, so what's in this hamas proposal? there are three stages, each one of these six weeks long for a permanent cease-fire, a swap of hostages in exchange for palestinians being held in israeli jails, and allowing dispraise displaced gazans to return home with no restrictions.

but, again, this does not meet israel's core demand. if this doesn't, what will. >> exactly. jarred, thank you so much. all right. so several hundred demonstrators protests the war in gaza tried to disrupt new york's star-studded met gala last night. the group marched through manhattan, defacing a world war i memorial with graffiti. the nypd said they made more than two dozen arrests while trying to block protesters from getting near the event. and a little farther uptown, pro-israel demonstrators gathered near columbia university to rally in support of jewish students. new fallout from the weeks of protests, columbia has now canceled its main graduation ceremony set for next week. at mit, pro-palestinian protesters busted through the barricades and retook their encampment. so we have team coverage of the coast-to-coast protests

starting with cbs's lana zak in new york. >> reporter: graduates are frustrated by the latest disruption to the end of their school year. >> it's irritating. parents have to change their plans last minute because the university couldn't decide whether or not to host commencement until now. >> reporter: the university has struggled for weeks, calling in the police twice, including last week, to remove more than a hundred people illegally barricaded inside hamilton hall. over the weekend northeastern university's ceremony was briefly interrupted by protesters. one student was arrested. while about 50 protesters marched through commencement at the university of michigan. out on the west coast, clashes between police and demonstrators intensified. >> reporter: i'm elise preston on the campus of ucla where hundreds of students marched through the campus after news that dozens were detained in the early morning hours. >> reporter: video posted on social media shows multiple

people in a campus parking lot with their hands zip tied. demonstrators expressed outrage over what they see as overpolicing. just as ucla formed a new office of campus safety, campus police are under investigation for their handling of an attack on a student encampment last week. >> do you feel safe on this campus? >> i do not feel safe on this campus. i feel targeted. >> reporter: at uc san diego more than 60 people were taken into custody as law enforcement tore down an encampment. angry protesters later clashed with deputies of the sheriff's office. tents at usc were removed where check points have become the norm. >> i'm disappointed i won't be able to walk through the gate one final time with my parents on graduation day. >> reporter: although columbia is canceling the large ceremony,

the school tells me that they're still going to be holding about two dozen smaller events for graduates. that is going to be held, though, at the athletic complex, which is about five miles away from campus. lana zak, cbs news, new york. well, an american soldier is under arrest in russia, accused of stealing money from his girlfriend. army staff sergeant gordon black was takn into custody on friday in the russian port city of vladivostok. u.s. officials say he was taken there even though it's listed as a do-not-travel zone for the american military. donald trump was fined an additional $1,000, bringing the total to $10,000 in the gag order violation for his so-called hush money trial in new york city. judge juan merchan held the former president in content for comments he made about the jury in an interview last month. he threatened trump with jail time if he violates the gag order again. he told trump, the last thing i want to do is put you in jail. you are a former president of the united states and possibly the next one as well. the gag violations constitute a direct attack on the rule of

law, which i cannot allow to continue. yesterday the jury heard testimony from a former trump organization controller. he explained how the company reimbursed payments to suppress embarrassing stories about trump during the 2016 presidential campaign. trump denies any wrongdoing. the faa is investigating a report from boeing that some of its workers falsified inspection records on some of its 787 dreamliners. boeing reported that workers at a south carolina plant failed to complete safety inspections but claimed the checks were done. a source tells cbs news this could potentially involve about 450 planes including some that are still being built. boeing says there is not an immediate safety issue with planes already in service. and boeing scrubbed its long delayed first human flight carrying people to the international space station. two nasa astronauts had just

an update on a missing baby found alive and a shooting attempt caught on camera. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "pittsburgh post-gazette" reports a man attempted to shoot a pastor at a pennsylvania church, but his gun did not fire. it happened in a live church service in braddock yesterday. the suspect bernard polite walking up to glenn germany and pointed a gun at him. germany ducked for cover. when the gun failed to fire, the church's deacon tackled polite, taking him down. the pastor broke down thinking of his teenage daughter watching from the pews. >> this thing that hurts me the most and brings tears to my eyes is i couldn't watch my daughter break down. i watched my daughter seated seen it all. >> authorities say polite said god told him to do it. the police later found a man shot to death in a home he was sharing with polite. the husband of a fort

lauderdale woman who disappeared in spain was arrested at a miami international airport. a ana knezevich disappeared from where she was staying. she disappeared after a man wearing ammo tore cycle helmet disabled her apartment security camera. david knezevich appeared in court yesterday for his alleged involvement in his estranged wife's kidnapping. and a missing baby was found alive and a texas man is in custody. 10-month-old eleia marie torres was found missing after her mother and another woman were found shot to death in a mexico park. the girl's 5-year-old half sister was critically wounded. a man is facing murder, kidnapping and child abuse charges. the police say the man apparently has no connection to
