cbs news' naomi ruchim with more on what to expect. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. michael cohen's testimony is pivotal to the outcome of this case, and each side believes they can use their statements to his advantage. for the prosecution, cohen can explain exactly how these alleged payments were made to stormy daniels, but we'll see the defense go after cohen as a liar with an axe to grind. >> i'm being forced to endure a biden show trial. >> reporter: former president donald trump railed against his manhattan criminal trial to a crowd of supporters in new jersey over the weekend. today in court, he's expected to come face to face with his former fixer, michael cohen, the man at the center of the prosecution's case. >> i think that michael cohen's testimony will be fire and brimstone. >> reporter: cohen is expected to lay out his account that he paid adult film star stormy daniels $130,000 to hide an

alleged past sexual encounter with trump ahead of the 2016 election. trump faces charges of falsifying business records to cover up his reimbursement to cohen. >> he really feels that it is up to him to be able to close this all up and deliver a verdict of guilty. >> reporter: trump has denied all wrongdoing. his lawyers argue that cohen is not a credible witness, pointing out that he admitted to lying to congress and that cohen went to prison after pleading guilty to charges related to the payments. >> are you ready to testify? >> yes. >> reporter: a year ago cohen told cbs news that he lied to congress to benefit his former boss and that he's not out for vengeance. >> this is solely about accountability. >> reporter: cohen has publicly discussed the trial as recently as last week. on friday judge juan merchan instructed prosecutors to tell the star witness to stop talking. for some perspective on just how

crucial michael cohen's testimony will be, his name was mentioned more than 130 times during opening statements in front of the jury. with cohen now taking the stand, prosecutors are believed to be in the homestretch of laying out their case. on friday they said they could potentially rest by the end of this week. anne-marie? >> all right. going to be a big day. naomi ruchim in new york. thank you. democratic new jersey senator bob menendez's latest corruption trial is set to begin today with jury selection. prosecutors allege he and his wife accepted gold bars, cash, and a luxury car as bribes to aid three businessmen in his home state. the favor allegedly benefited the governments of egypt and qatar. his lawyers say he stayed within the rules and did nothing illegal. and now to the middle east where israeli forces are pushing deeper into gaza's southern city of rafah which israel says is hamas' last stronghold. and the idf is now also battling

a resurgence of hamas militants in several towns in the northern part of the territory which had been cleared out months ago. secretary of state antony blinken delivered some of the strongest public criticism yet of israel's conduct of the war in gaza, telling cbs' "face the nation" that israeli tactics have failed to protect civilians in gaza and failed to neutralize hamas. the israeli military opened a new humanitarian crossing into gaza sunday. the third crossing that will allow aid into the northern region. cbs' ramy inocencio reports from tel aviv. >> reporter: warned by israel's military of a major advance, the tens of thousands who fled to rafah are fleeing again. "this is the tenth time we're evacuating," said this man. "i'm a journalist. i should be telling others where to go." shattered neighborhood of eastern rafah are now eerily quiet, those that haven't left caring for the wounded and for the dead. israel's military says dozens of

terrorists have been killed. >> our operations against hamas in rafah remains limited in scope. >> reporter: but the army has launched a new operation in the north saying hamas is trying to re-establish itself there. in expanded strikes up and down the strip, the israel defense forces said it hit more than 150 terror targets in the past day. with more funerals like these held in their wake. outside her makeshift shelter, jamila lost nearly her entire family in an israeli strike. [ speaking in a global language ] "my 8-year-old son's body is still under the rubble," she said. "i'm waiting for a cease-fire to pull him out." she was a mother of seven children. her 10-year-old daughter dima is the only survivor. [ speaking in a global language ] she said, "i wish this war would end." many in israel wish that, too. the country mourned its dead on its first memorial day since october 7th.

netanyahu vowed to push on. [ speaking in a global language ] "keep going until victory," he said. in gaza, this woman wished she could have protected her six children. [ speaking in a global language ] "i wish i died and they had lived," she said. "my message to any mother -- see our lives and see our sorrows. i'm one of countless mothers who have lost." ramy inocencio, cbs news, tel aviv. back here in the u.s., dozens of duke university students booed jerry seinfeld and some even walked out ahead of his commencement address. [ boos ] >> this scene played out sunday as duke university's president introduced seinfeld. the 70-year-old had been an outspoken supporter of israel since the october 7th attack by hamas militants. despite the minor chaos, though, seinfeld was able to deliver his

speech with no interruptions. he gave the graduates three bits of advice and encouraged them to use their privilege well. >> again, a lot of you are thinking, i can't believe they invited this guy. too late. i say, use your privilege. i grew up a jewish boy from new york. that is a privilege if you want to be a comedian. [ cheers ] >> pro-palestinian protests popped up sporadically over the weekend as colleges and universities from north carolina to california held commencement ceremonies. dozens of graduating students at virginia commonwealth university walked out on an address by governor glenn youngkin. and parts of western pennsylvania are cleaning up after three apparent tornadoes touched down this weekend. a large twister was spotted in finleyville on saturday about 20 miles south of pittsburgh. the tornado struck during a church service. ♪

people had to run for cover when part of the roof flew off and hit the steeple. that came crashing down. >> was evacuating everybody into the basement. and i just told people it was a microburst. i didn't know what was going on. then our phones went off, a tornado has touched down. i said, well, at least we know what it was. >> some congregants suffered minor injuries. it destroyed cars in the parking lot and damaged homes in the area. minnesota is under an air quality alert today due to active wildfires in canada. thousands are being urged to evacuate due to the flames that are triggering poor air quality and reduced visibility. officials say there are more than 100 active wildfires burning in canada with a string of them being labeled as out of control. most of the active wildfires are in british columbia and alberta. about 20 million people across the south could see flash

sending frightened residents into the streets. there were no immediate reports of serious damage, though. in guatemala small landslides occurred. demolition day at the collapsed key bridge and a fallen officer in ohio. those are the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the news herald" reports jacob derbin, an ohio police officer, was shot and killed after being ambushed. euclid police say the suspect, deshawn vaughn, was found dead in the apartment following an hours' long standoff with the s.w.a.t. team. they say derbin reported to an unspecified disturbance at a home on saturday, and that's when police say vaughn opened fire on the officer. he later died in the hospital. derbin was a military veteran and was on the force for less than a year. "the baltimore sun" says the controlled demolition of part of the key bridge was delayed by lightning and will take place today. crews will use explosives to break apart a large chunk of the baltimore bridge that collapsed on a cargo ship.

the planned demolition is aimed at helping remove debris and free a large cargo ship that veered off course in march and struck a pillar at the francis scott key bridge causing the collapse. six construction workers died in that incident. "the boston globe" reports a massachusetts man who received the first kidney transplant from a genetically engineered pig has died. richard slayman's family said he died almost two months after the unprecedented procedure. the 62-year-old who had end-stage kidney disease underwent the transplant in march at massachusetts general hospital in boston. the hospital said there was no -- rather, quote, no indication slayman's death was a result of the transplant. still to come, a new fast food deal. the golden arches could soon launch a new discount menu to bring back customers. customers. , viruses and bacteria linger. air fresheners add a scent. but only lysol air sanitizer helps erase the trace, eliminating odor and

these spectacular multicolored auroras were spotted across the northern hemisphere this weekend. the northern lights have been visible since friday across wide areas thanks to increased solar activity including solar flares from the sun. the green, red, and purple lights were spotted from maine to california and as far south as alabama, georgia, and florida. apple workers threatened to strike, and mcdonald's seems to be listening to customers' complaints about the high cost of food. here's matt pieper with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks coasted to the close of another winning week on friday. the dow gained 125, the nasdaq lost five points. s&p up eight points. you might call this one a happy meal if it goes through. mcdonald's is considering adding

a $5 meal to its menu as a way to win back customers. it could include a choice of a mcchicken, mcdouble, or four-piece chicken nuggets as well as fries and a drink. the discussions come weeks after mcdonalds' executives reported slower growths in foot traffic at its restaurants with people cutting back because of higher prices. taking a bite out of apple. apple store employees in maryland have voted to authorize a strike over working conditions. the store was the first to unionize about two years ago, and workers say they are seeking changes in what they call unpredictable scheduling practices and wages that align with the local cost of living. no date has been set for the strike. and a'ja wilson of the wnba's las vegas aces is getting her own nike shoe. nike said wilson worked side by side with its team of innovation, product, and design experts to create a signature shoe collection that's inspired by her style, performance, and realness. the collection will be released next year. wilson and the aces kick off

actor steve buscemi is doing okay after he says that he was attacked on the streets of new york city. buscemi's publicist says the 66-year-old was punched in the face in a random attack last wednesday. the police report says the victim was taken to the hospital with bruising, swelling, and bleeding to his left eye. police released a photo of a suspect they are looking for. prince harry and his wife meghan have wrapped up their three-day trip to nigeria. sunday the couple visited a school with a basketball camp in the city of lagos where they were greeted with a traditional dance routine. the duke and duchess of sussex were invited to the country to promote mental health for soldiers and empower young people. the visit also coincides with the ten-year anniversary of the invictus games which harry founded. switzerland wins the 68th eurovision song contest.
