and the sun reigns on her wnba debut. caitlin clark plays her first professional game, but it doesn't go exactly as planned. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. donald trump's manhattan criminal trial is off today, but things got heated yesterday as his defense team started questioning the prosecution's star witness, michael cohen. the former president's lawyers repeated cohen's own coarse words back to him as they tried to paint trump's former fixer as an opportunist motivated by vengeance. jarred hill with more on the fireworks in the courtroom. good morning. >> reporter: this cross-examination started off hot yesterday. trump's defense is trying to paint michael cohen as the ultimate opportunist, lying for trump's approval in the past, trying to monetize his now feud asking if he cooperated with prosecutors to get off of house arrest. efforts to chip away at his credibility for the jury.

michael cohen, trumps's fixer-turned-fierce adversary, is facing a cross-examination from the former president's defense. >> had a very good day. >> reporter: tuesday trump's attorney, todd blanche, worked to discredit cohen pointing out his public attacks at his form boss and showing this t-shirt with trump behind bars. he asked cohen he wanted to see at one point blanche asked if trump wanted to see cohen convicted and he responded "sure." >> they're doing everything they can to make the jury see cohen as someone like a jilted lover, someone who at one point would do anything for donald trump, and now he's done a 180 and his life's motive is revenge. >> reporter: a gag order was not removed but this week a throng of big-name republican supporters have shown up to court and lobbed attacks of their own including house speaker mike johnson.

>> this is the fifth week that president trump has been in court for this sham of a trial. >> reporter: in his testimony so far, cohen claims trump was aware of a plan to pay him back for funneling $130,000 to adult film star stormy daniels in order to hide an alleged past sexual encounter ahead of the 2016 election saying trump knew financial records would list the reimbursements as legal fees. trump denies the encounter and has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records. michael cohen is expected back on the stand tomorrow for more with this cross-examination. prosecutors say that he is their last witness, and then trump's legal team will have a chance to present their case to the jury. >> ought to be interesting. jarred hill in new york. thank you. >> reporter: thanks. donald trump's private boeing 757 clipped a parked plane while taxiing at palm beach international airport over the weekend. the faa lists the tail number of trump's plane in the incident where part of its wing struck an unoccupied corporate jet.

it's not known if trump was on the plane at the time, and there were no reports of injuries. turning now to the israel-hamas war, the biden administration plans to send more than $1 billion in weapons to israel, that's according to two congressional aides. congress will need to approve the transfer. this new weapons deal comes just days after the u.s. withheld a shipment of 3,500 bombs to prevent israel from using them in the densely populated city of rafah. no word on which the arms will be sent, and this is not part of the foreign aid package congress passed last month. the israeli military released video of what it says shows armed terrorists and gunfire near u.n. vehicles, and in the area of logistics warehouse compound in eastern rafah. israel is calling on the u.n. to investigate the matter. israel marked 76 years of independence with muted celebrations with the country at war and more than 100 hostages still held by hamas.

cbs' imtiaz tyab reports from tel aviv. >> reporter: israeli warplanes targeted this building in the central refugee camp. a cbs news team was there as first responders dug survivors out from the rubble. several were killed, including women and children. in another strike nearby, the israeli military says it struck a hamas war room at a u.n. school killing over ten fighters. cbs news could not independently verify the claim. the carnage comes as aid agencies say nearly half a million palestinians have fled the southern city of rafah since israel began targeting areas there last week, including 81-year-old mufasa al gazzar, now displaced in this camp. [ speaking in a global language ] "i live in extreme fear," he says. all crossings out of gaza are now blocked leaving 20 american medics trapped inside like dr.

in israel. the students said harvard also offered to retract the suspensions of more than 20 students and back down on disciplinary measures faced by dozens more. >> the biggest achievement of the protest i would probably say is just drawing attention to the problem. >> for the israeli and jewish community on campus, this is like a slap in the face because we've been nothing but respectful. >> well, across the country student protesters at the university of california berkeley began dismantling dozens of tents and removing makeshift barricades from their encampment. the school says it will create a task force to examine its investments but will not agree to consider divestment from companies doing business with israel. republican hopes of taking over control of the narrowly divided u.s. senate received a boost in two state primaries yesterday. in maryland, cbs news is projecting that former governor larry hogan has won the republican nomination for senate. he'll face democrat prince george's county executive angela

alsobrooks in november. in west virginia, cbs news is projecting popular governor jim justice the winner of the republican nomination for senate in that state. he'll square off against the winner of the democratic nomination glenn elliott in november. the two people on opposite sides of the january 6th insurrection lost their bids for the u.s. house. derek evans, who served a three-month jail sentence after live streaming his storming the capitol, lost his west virginia lost the race to incumbent carol miller. and in maryland, former capitol police officer harry dunn who defended lawmakers during the insurrection lost his democratic primary for the u.s. house to state senator sarah elfreth. welcome to the wnba, caitlin clark. the ncaa's all-time division-one scoring leader made her professional debut on the road with the indiana fever last night. she got off to a slow start, though, missing her first four shots before scoring on a lay-up midway through the second quarter.

three officers were seriously wounded. new findings in the maryland bridge collapse, and a deadly bus crash in florida. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "orlando sentinel" reports the driver of a pickup truck involved in a deadly crash with a bus carrying farm workers was arrested. police say the truck crossed the center line yesterday about 80 miles north of orlando and sideswiped the bus carrying more than 50 farm workers. the bus veered off the road, crashed through a fence into a tree and overturned. eight workers were killed, and at least 45 others injured. the truck driver, bryan maclean howard, is facing dui manslaughter charges. "the baltimore sun" says the cargo ship that hit the francis scott key bridge lost power twice before the crash according to investigators. a preliminary ntsb report found the ship experienced an electrical blackout about ten hours before leaving the port of baltimore and again shortly

before slamming into the bridge killing six construction workers. the report says the first power outage happened after a crew member made a mistake while conducting maintenance causing one of the ship's engine to stall. and "the miami herald" reports a boat that authorities say fits the description of the hit-and-run that killed a teenage girl was seized. the boat was found yesterday docked behind a home in coral gables. 15-year-old ella adler was waterskiing saturday off key biscayne when she fell into the water and was hit by a boat which sped away. investigators say it's unclear if the driver of the boat actually knew they hit someone. they have not been identified. and still to come now, best in show. the little dog that beat out some big competition at the westminster kennel club dog show. club dog show.

the sun has been working overtime. scientists say giant solar explosions aren't over yet. the sun shot out its biggest flare in almost two decades yesterday sending energy, light, and high-speed particles into space. fortunately the earth was not in the explosion's path. this, of course, came just days after solar storms hit the earth creating northern lights that were widely visible across the u.s. book lovers rejoice, a big sale starts today, and more legal trouble for boeing. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks closed higher tuesday as investors counted down to new inflation data set to be released today. the dow gained 126 points. the nasdaq was up 122, and the s&p 500 gained 25 points.

the justice department says boeing violated a settlement that allowed the company to avoid prosecution after two deadly crashes involving 737 max aircraft. the crashes happened more than five years ago. boeing blamed two relatively low-level employees for misleading federal regulators who approved the plane. the doj will decide whether or not to file charges by july. tiktok content creators are suing the federal government over a new law that could lead to a ban of the popular app. together the eight plaintiffs in the suit have millions of tiktok followers. they claim the law violates their first amendment rights to free speech. tiktok filed a separate lawsuit last week. and looking for a good summer read? starting today bookworms across the country can take advantage of amazon's brand-new six-day book sale. the event runs until may 20th and offers deals on both print
