to meet on the debate stage after a social media tit-for-tat. what makes these face-offs different. another boating crash, this time a barge slams into a bridge in texas causing significant damage, shutting down traffic, and leaking oil into the water. the latest on the cleanup. and assassination attempt. slovakia's head of state shot multiple times, and now fighting for his life. the potential motive. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with presidential politics. donald trump's so-called hush-money trial resumes today with his former fixer, michael cohen, back on the stand for cross-examination. and just when you thought there may not be any general election debates, we got two in a matter of hours. the first one scheduled for june 27th, and the second one for september 10th. cbs' jarred hill is here with the details. and these debates are actually going to be a little bit different. >> that's right.

so think more "face the nation" moderated discussion, less mma slug fest, at least based on -- >> it started out like an mma slug fest almost. >> this is what's being proposed. we'll see where it goes. both the biden and trump camps agreed pretty quickly actually to these two debates now scheduled before early voting is set to kick off in september. >> make my day, pal. >> reporter: less than an hour after president biden threw out this challenge -- >> let's pick the date. i hear you're free on wednesdays. >> reporter: taunting president trump over the criminal trial keeping him in court four days a week. the presumptive republican nominee said let's get ready to rumble. >> i've accepted it, too, 100%. >> reporter: trump and biden will face off in two debates. the first, june 27th hosted by cnn, the second on september 10th on abc, no studio audience. >> will you shut up, man? >> reporter: in the rematch four years in the making, the biden campaign wants moderators to be

able to cut mics to minimize disruptions. >> it's about the candidates clearly articulating their vision for where they want to take the country. >> reporter: some voters in battleground pennsylvania tell cbs news they don't think the debates are going to change a lot of minds. >> people have their own formed opinions already about each party. so i feel like neither have anything to gain. it's going to be a fighting match really. >> reporter: third-party candidate robert f. kennedy jr. appears to be locked out from the debate stage. he's accused the biden and trump campaigns of colluding to exclude him. >> all right. so aside from yesterday's debate drama, we are expecting more drama in the courtroom. what's the expectations for today? >> actually the first debate is scheduled to be after the falsified documents case is expected to be wrapped up. what we're expecting here, though, is today michael cohen back on the stand being questioned by former president trump's defense team. they here are trying to paint him, the prosecution's key witness, as a liar with a personal vendetta against the

former president. trump's lawyers are also trying to get the new york highest court to lift or at least modify his gag order. >> i don't know if that's going to happen, but we'll see. thank you very much. >> thanks. stunning allegations from senator bob menendez's defense team at the start of his federal corruption trial. in his opening statement, menendez's lawyer is blaming the senator's wife, telling the jury menendez was not aware his wife took gifts from three businessmen and did not know about the cash and gold bars hidden in the closet at the couple's home. menendez and his wife are accused of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes in exchange for political favors for the egyptian and qatari governments. she's being tried separately. and an investigation is under way this morning into the barge that crashed into a bridge in galveston, texas. the impact caused significant damage to the bridge, shut down the only road to a small neighboring island, and is leaking oil into the waterway. kris van cleave reports.

emergency management, the fire department, hazmat advising there's fuel oil leaking into the water. >> reporter: from the air the damage is clear. a barge that broke loose while being towed slammed into the bridge linking pelican island to galveston, texas, around 10:00 this morning. the collision brought down a portion of elevated train tracks and left a trail of spilled oil in the water. the collision temporarily halted traffic on the only route off pelican island. >> happy because i got a wife at hole, pregnant wife at home, i'm trying to get back to her. >> holy hell. >> reporter: in march, a similar scene in oklahoma when a barge hit a bridge over the arkansas river briefly closing u.s. 59. >> we've conducted a number of investigations involving vessel strikes on bridges -- >> reporter: on capitol hill, ntsb chair jennifer homendy urged bridge operators to do a safety review now. >> don't wait. if you have such a bridge, look at how that traffic has changed over time, make sure you have the right protections in place.

>> reporter: her urging comes as the ntsb continues its investigation into the collision that toppled the francis scott key bridge in baltimore after it was struck by the cargo ship "dali" in march moments after the ship lost power. now investigators say the ship had power issues ten hours earlier while docked at the port of baltimore, twice losing power. the crew's adjustments to the electrical system are a focus of the probe. >> what we're looking at is the configuration of the circuit breakers as a result of that. >> reporter: the work continues removing debris from the key bridge so they can move the cargo ship out of the channel and get the port of baltimore back open in the coming weeks. kris van cleave, cbs news, new york. this morning hospital officials say the prime minister of slovakia, robert fico, is in stable but serious condition following a shocking assassination attempt. the 59-year-old populist was shot multiple time at a political event yesterday. charlie d'agata has the dramatic

[ gunshots ] >> reporter: just moments after a gunman opened fire on slovakia's prime minister, robert fico, he collapses as body guards bundle him into the car. [ gunfire ] security officials say he was shot five times at close range. the alleged shooter pinned down, the suspect described by local media as a 71-year-old former security guard and activist. taken by chopper to the closest trauma hospital, seen here being wheeled in, tonight fico's office says he's fighting for his life. the shooter's motive is unclear. the prime minister has been a divisive figure in the eastern european country of around 5.4 million people. the populist leader of a nato ally whose pro-russian, pro-putin stance brought him to

power for a third power. he has stood firm against sending more weapons to ukraine. the slovak defense minister called for calm. >> what's happened, it's a political assault. it a's clear, and we have to react on that. >> reporter: a political assault in which not only the prime minister's life but the direction of his fractured country hang in the balance. charlie d'agata, cbs news, london. russian president vladimir putin arrived in china on a two-day state visit. chinese leader xi jinping welcomed putin overnight at an official ceremony in beijing. it comes as russia presses forward with a new offensive in ukraine's northeastern kharkiv region. xi said today that china hopes europe will return to peace and stability soon and that china will play a constructive role. turning now to the war in gaza and the growing pressure on israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu and the renewed

fighting in areas where israel's military had rooted out hamas. the defense minister called on netanyahu to lay out his post-war plans and warned that he opposes israeli rule in gaza. the prime minister says it's impossible to prepare for any post-war scenario until hamas is defeated. netanyahu is also facing criticism for squandering military gains with renewed fighting in areas where israel's military had control. there's also been an uptick in rocket fire from gaza toward israel suggesting hamas is regrouping. the floating pier built by the u.s. military has now been moved into position off the gaza coast. trucks carrying the humanitarian aid are expected to begin moving ashore in the coming days. the united nations will coordinate its distribution. and police have taken back control of a lecture hall from pro-palestinian protesters at the university of california-irvine. hundreds of protesters occupied the building for several hours yesterday. officers in riot gear from

several nearby jurisdictions responded after school officials asked for help. they dismantled an encampment and barricades and detained some protesters. a new round of severe weather and torrential rain will develop in texas and louisiana. thunderstorms will bring potentially damaging winds and large hail across central and eastern texas this afternoon and evening. then tomorrow, a risk of severe storms redevelops in louisiana, mississippi, and alabama. heavy downpours will bring a widespread threat of flash flooding. parts of eastern texas and louisiana could get up to eight inches of rain through friday evening. coming up, subway rescue. the dramatic video of cops racing to save a man who fell onto the tracks. and later, finally some good news on inflation. what it means and the impact on the markets.

new york city police officers jumped into action to save a man who fell onto subway tracks. body cam video shows the officers rushing through a crowded station to get to the man who apparently suffered a seizure. they did it while a train was quickly approaching the station. the man was pulled onto the platform. new details about the driver in a deadly bus crash, and the supreme court hands a victory to black voters in louisiana. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the advocate" reports the u.s. supreme court ordered louisiana to hold this year's congressional elections using a house map with a second mostly black district. the new district stretches from baton rouge to shreveport. the supreme court's decision comes despite a lower court rulin that called the map an illegal racial gerrymander. state republicans and black voters said they needed the high court's intervention to avoid confusion ahead of november's election. the "orlando sentinel" says

the driver of a pickup truck that told investigators he smoked marijuana oil and took prescription drugs hours before a florida crash that killed eight mexican farm workers. bryan maclean howard pleaded not guilty yesterday to dui manslaughter charges. police say he drove his truck into the center line tuesday and sideswiped a bus carrying more than 50 farm workers. the bus veered off the road, struck a tree, and flipped over. and "the idaho statesman" says a prison inmate pled guilty to escaping custfrom a boise hospital. corrections officers were preparing to transport skylar meade back to prison when an accomplice shot and wounded two officers. a third was shot and injured by another officer. meade and the accomplice were arrested the next day. skylar meade faces possible enhanced charges. still to come, pranking the principal. how a musical prank backfired at an illinois school. a musical b

closing highs. the dow gained 349 points, the nasdaq was up 231, and the s&p 500 gained 61 points. the rally thanks to a new report showing inflation may finally be easing. consumer prices rose 3.4% in april compared to one year ago. that's slightly less than march's inflation rate of 3.5%. the slowdown follows months of disappointing data where the country's consumer price index came in worse than expected. speaking of higher prices, mcdonald's has heard you and is trying to lure customers back with a limited time $5 value meal. the deal will include the choice of either a mcchicken, a mcdouble, or four-piece chicken nuggets as well as fries and a drink. it's slated to begin june 25th and lasts for about a month. and more waits -- ways to use uk. -- to use uber. the company will roll out for
