especially san francisco. jess good morning. good morning to you, this has been the case all week long with this may gray and the early morning hours. that blanket of clouds over the santa clara valley this morning as we wake up and head out the door, we're underneath that all throughout the bay area. stretching off into the east bay. but here's some good news. into this afternoon we go. just like yesterday, we're going to see warmer temperatures in the forecast for us especially in our inland areas. with 70s in sight near concord and antioch and livermore today topping off at 79 degrees. so no more 80s necessarily off in the east bay. but we're so close we can almost taste it. now down into the santa clara valley, a very similar trend. upper 70s into this afternoon. let's dive straight into our weather headlines. it is cool and it is cloudy. that has been the case every single morning this week but just like clockwork around that 10:00 hour, that cloud layer pulls back along the coast and we start to see sunnier skies all throughout the inland areas and we'll continue to see small day-to-day changes in the forecast for us. now as we head into the next couple of days

that coastal fog will still stay apparent. a lot breezier and cooler along the coastline with the fog laying low. driving in the early morning hours keep that in mind. visibility could be impacted because of that. you know what to do with the headlights. now we have more of the same this weekend's in the forecast and i think it's important to note that though because plenty of things are happening this weekend. sunday forecast, we're expecting 50s in the early morning hours and whether or not you plan to have an outfit a phonics fume for bay to breakers or some people just go without anything, we are expecting cool conditions in those morning hours. cloudy skies in the morning. a little bit of a breeze too, we'll have more on that coming up in just a bit. for now over to you, g. let's talk about the roadways right now as you get out on this early thursday morning. live look here t the golden gate bridge. a little breezy out there but overall not too many traffic issues and in fact, no fog to slow you down here either. so visibility looks pretty good overall as you head through there. now here's an overview of the area you can see no delays along

101. nice ride all the way into novato and mill valley and down into san francisco. most of our major freeways are looking pretty good right now. with the exception of the ride into the altamont pass, that's getting a little bit busy westbound coming out of 205 getting on to 580. new reports of a crash just at that connector, once you are past all that past north flynn the rest of the way is clear to the dublin interchange. all right, g, developing overnight at uc berkeley a group of protesters have taken over a condemned building on campus. the university claims they are a group of activists separate from the free palestine encampment that lasted for weeks and disbanded yesterday. shawn chitnis is live this morning on the uc berkeley campusing shawn, do we know if they're still in the building? >> reporter: reed, good morning. hard to tell at this point because it so dark but we do want to give people a sense of exactly what we're dealing with here. we're about a block away from people's park itself. let me step out of the way where you can see the building and the tents that are there. now people's park for quite some time has had the large

shipping containers surrounding every side of the park. here at this building that is really just one block over we now see these tents that are outside. and we understand that there are some people who have made their way into the building as well. the university giving us some information and then also new details coming in overnight about 20 people setting up on the lawn of what is a burned out building on campus. the ann bead alumnae hall and we're told the same amount could be inside. the university says this appears to be a group of people's park protesters given it's the 55th anniversary of the park and so they decided to move in on a building near there. this all comes as the encampment at uc berkeley was taken down and protesters reached an agreement with the school and the university says it would look into the investments to see if they align with the school's values. the chancellor also said she would personally call for a ceasefire in gaza. now it is

important to note that at this particular location at least on the site we are located we do see some palestinian flags to unclear exactly who all is a part of this group and what their intentions are. but we're going to be here this morning trying to reach out and see if we can talk to those who have decided to set up over on that lawn. reed, back to you. >> shawn chitnis with the northern california part of this story. now go south is where we go. this morning, classes are out at uv irvine after protesters in southern california clashed with riot police trying to stop a takeover. and barricades situation inside a science lecture hall. they canceled alls classes and they're angry about word that the university suspended protesters who were on a negotiations team. authorities broke down an encampment housing hundreds of protesters on campus. the school described the protest as violent. but they did not say what type of violence. meanwhile, protesters

wanting to get the attention of university regents meeting at uc merced inside those buildings, regents are debating whether professors and staff should be barred from posting their views on campus websites. they face congressional pressure to set boundaries on political speech that could reflect the university's official stance. an an encampment at the university of san francisco. graduation ceremonies will happen on campus this afternoon. meanwhile, a deadline to disburse it came and went. and protesters dug in their heels and they're not moving. in fact administrators say they're not planning to remove protesters by force. but warn students could face academic repercussions. in the south bay, the artist who yet it had famous black power statue on the campus of san jose state showing his support for protesters who set up an encampment in the shadow of the statue. the artist rigo 23 is known for murals and political art and in the shadow of the

statue he created called victory salute, he said this to protesters. >> i wanted san francisco students, you know, from 2005 into the future, to know that their backs -- by these two giants. [ applause ] >> there are new developments at sonoma state university also. university president mike lee put on leave after an agreement he made with pro palestinian protesters on campus among other things, lee agreed to a boycott of academic and research institutions with ties to israel. well, csu chancellors say lee made the announcement in a campus wide email without approval. that move is now under review while lee remains on leave this morning. well, california legislative jewish caucus says they support the suspension saying in a statement, lee's endorsement ofan academic boycott was unacceptable and is evidence he's unfit to lead the university. for continuing on the bay area university encampments and protests and even those down south. stick

with us on air and online at kpix.com and streaming 24/7 on our app. right now, hundreds of thousands of palestinians have already fled rafah and it could be days until aid arrives. meanwhile israeli tanks go deeper into the city where a bay area doctor is stuck. one of 20 u.s. doctors who have been unable to leave gaza. the doctor practices family medicine at sutter health in palo alto and now she left her family including her two daughters for rafah at the end of april for what was supposed to be a two week mission. but now the crossing to egypt is closed and it's left her trapped. her brother has been fighting for her return home. >> she wanted to be able to do more. i think the -- you know, just advocacy from here really wasn't enough. yesterday when i was talking to her, we had some tests back and forth. and one thing she was worried about was that she was not so worried about herself and her spirits were good. but she was worried

about that they were return running out of supplies, medical supplies because of the border crossing and they couldn't help the people and she was also worried about she was going to be lateback to work so she couldn't see her parents here. we're worried about her safety so i found that ironic. >> the big challenge with getting her out is safety. moving around rafah. and he also says his sister has been treating a lot of children. >> there's a scarcity of food, there's dehydration. there's, you know, all of this sicknesses that comes with being homeless. and you know, being displaced. and so that is i think what she is seeing. they had to get relocated because of the intensity of what was going on in rafah. and i think she's been very careful about what she shares with us. >> he says it's been hard to communicate with his sister because of frequent blackouts and that his family has contacted congresswoman anna eschew's office for assistance

until alameda county, district attorney pamela price gearing up for a fight. a successful effort to get her name back on a ballot in a recall election is her newest mountain to climb. listen. >> the people of this county have the right to elect a district attorney. they did that. we should not have to do it again. but we will. we will do it again. >> so she's ready for a fight. back in 2022, price won her seat with 53% of the vote. but a group of people angry at price's decisions and high-profile cases led a victims' rights group to get the signatures needed to drive a recall effort. once they got the signatures, supervisors chose to add that recall to the november election ballot. the general election instead of calling for what would have been a very expensive special election. update on a big story after the in custody death of a 30-year-old man police were accused of excessive force. killing anglo quinn toe. that was in 2020. four years later the city of antioch will pay

$7.5 million to his family. he died while forcibly restrained during a mental health emergency. despite his cause of death ruled excited delirium the american medical association and others say that's not a legitimate medical diagnosis. to concord now. a failed burglary attempt leaves an engineering business rammed and watch this. this happened monday night on solano way caught on camera. the owner says and you can hear that crash right there, it will cost him about $2,000 to fix that rollup door that they tried to ram. concord police say just before the incident, that same crew tried and failed to hit a similar business using similar tactics nearby. let's get a live look outside on this thursday morning. we are going to go to the top of the mark where you get a great perspective of the bay sort of off in the distance. and you can see that ferris wheel there. and a little cloud cover out there this morning. jessica, how's it looking throughout the rest of the day? i'm hoping some of that burns off. >> it will except if you livealong the coastline but

notice how it's hanging just above all of us in the city of san francisco. that's kind of the case widespread throughout the bay area this morning. not impacting surface visibility nearly as much. but this huge area of high pressure sitting just offshore, it's a blocking high and it's keeping us dry as we head into the next seven days however it is still delivering in the coastal foggy conditions and we're going to continue the see more of the same as we head into this weekend's forecast. the storm track luckily remains well north of us. so that means that we're going to see dry skies as we head into this weekend's forecast. early next week. and lasting into mid next week too. rain chances remain low but those breezy and cool conditions along the coast continue to remain a little bit higher and we're going to have more on that coming up in just bit. if you do live along the coastline you know exactly what i'm talking about. yesterday we saw wind gusts anywhere up to around 25, 30 miles per hour. moving in from offshore. we'll see the same today with upper 50s in the forecast for us anywhere from half-moon bay all the way up into pacifica. now if you live in our inland areas, i was just flying yesterday over in napa and it actually intimidated me because i was driving out of san

francisco. with those cool, cloudy conditions. but i have to keep in mind all of us have different microclimates and of course that's the case. you pop over into marin and napa and sonoma. dry as can be. sunny as can be. it was a beautiful day yesterday. a little bit breezy, yes at times but other than that, i mean, it's been a stunning setup for us all week long. we have 60s in the forecast for us today near livermore and upper 70s down into the santa clara valley. if you live near los gatos or san jose. yesterday we hit the 80s near los gatos. today just a smidge cooler. you will notice that actually even more as we head into the weekend's forecast. watch how daytime highs today and tomorrow cool down just a little bit as we head into the forecast actually. well, actually average out i should say as we head into saturday with mid 70s in sight and we get a little bit of a warm-up early next week which will be nice for us. that area of high pressure actually builds in just a little bit closer and that will bring in more sunshine and actually see beautiful sunrises instead of all the may gray above us. and at least if you live in our inland areas. because here's our bay forecast. we'll still see the cloudy skies as we head

into sunday a little bit bitter monday and by mid next week the clouds love us so much they stick around especially in the morning hours. over to you, g. roadways right now. if you're getting ready to head out the door and make that ride across the golden gate bridge now is a good time to do that. i know it's early and that alarm going off 5:00 in the morning is a little tough. but this certainly makes it easier because when you are on roadways you don't have a lot to deal with right now great news for the morning drive heading into san francisco. and in fact, looking at our overview map, you can see a lot of green and that means good speeds for most of our freeways. you are clocking in some really nice speeds along 680 through san ramon and headed along 880 through oakland and 101 along the peninsula everything is pretty quiet. now there are some brake lights for supercommuters heads-up if you are working your way out of tracy getting on to 580. a crash just as you connect into the altamont pass. and that's causing a bit of a backup. but this is an area that gets busy anyway for the morning commute for anyone making their way towards say the dublin interchange or maybe you are heading south of there into pleasanton on 680. into

the sunol grade which looks pretty good. so once you get past all the brake lights, you are looking a lot better the rest of the way. 48 minutes is the travel time to go from 205 over to 680. well, we got a sneak peek at the nearly complete renovations at sfo's harvey milk terminal 1. there are new ticket counters and a new security checkpoint and two new gates. the project links all of the airport's terminals after security. officials say it will be the most sustainable airport terminal in the entire world when it opens up on june 11th. we welcome all of our visitors to the bay. let's go to the south bay right now. we look live. good morning to our friends in san jose. we understand you are hosting a series of block parties to give the city a series. the first one tonight is in the hi torque district. nonprofit urban vibrancy says more than 60 businesses will participate. that's expected to bring thousands of people in from live music and food and a lot of community fun. well, contra costa county fair starts today with rides and animals ready to entertain visitors. pigs, prancing and

just speaking in code? >> you are a dad. >> watch your back. something going on there. >> dad back. we have to look it up. okay, a pacifica nurse tookon the shack infested waters to be the first person in history to swim from the golden gate bridge to a remote island off the coast of san francisco. 55-year-old amy swam nearly 30 miles without a wet suit to the fair lawn islands on saturday. her team was by her side in a boat as she swam through strong currents and frigid temperatures and it took the grandmother 17 hours to get to the island and other swimmers previously made the swim from the island to san francisco. wow. well, she was actually a swimmer in college. and when she isn't in the water, look at that. she works as a nurse at ucsf benioff children's hospital and the fetal cardiac unit. oh, that's impressive. doing great things for people as a nurse and helping others and then swimming to the fair lawn islands which is known for all

it is 5:30 in the morning on cbs news bay area. and we take a live look right there. transamerica is looking more pointy than it has in previous mornings. talk to jess about in weather. this is that day when i always say we're standing p our tippy toes looking out over the weekend and so many exciting things happening the weekend. you mentioned yesterday, jess, bay to

breakers and county fair in concord and that's going to be fun. will the weather cooperate? concord is going to have the best weather this weekend. now for our friends at bay to breakers, we know the drill during this time of year. i mean look behind me. our live camera is totally distorted right now just because how thick that marine layer is. it's kind of just creaming throughout the city of san francisco right now. leaving some cool and wet conditions throughout the bay. now as we wake up this afternoon, or wake up this morning and head into this afternoon, that marine layer pulls back along the coast and just like yesterday, just like clockwork we're going to see sunnier skies in the forecast for us all throughout the inland areas and it's going to be cool and cloudy along the coast day. small day-to-day changes heading into the weekend forecast. another thing to mention too though. we have more of the same the n weekend and that also includes the wind. this morning we're getting the onshore flow anywhere up to around 15, 20 miles per hour and i was walking chopper this morning and the wind was just so chilly and numbing almost. just along the coastline. keep that in mind before you head out the door, the time now 5:30. grab the coffee and grab the jacket

and grab a windbreaker maybe. i have never used one of those but in the next couple hof hours as we head into this afternoon, that onshore flow stays consistent. wind gusts anywhere from 25 to 30 miles per hour at dinner time. we continue to watch the winds. around 8:30 down into the santa clara valley we start to clear up into lunchtime we actually see beautiful skies all the wayover into the napa. the daytime highs today in napa are sitting in the 60s. but for now over to you, g. all right, thank you. let's talk about the roadways right now. as you get ready to head out the door early on. here's a look at the travel times because we're tracking some brake lights as you head over into the altamont pass this morning. but other than that, that's really our only hotspot right now. not seeing too many problems as far as brake lights go along 80 and highway 4 or 101. everything is pretty clear through there. a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza, moving along pretty well. no metering lights just yet. oh did you see that bird just fly through? but actually looks pretty good overall for

that ride as you head over into san francisco. and if you are taking the peninsula into san francisco, right now things are pretty quiet. if you are headed out of san jose this morning, you are clocking in pretty nice speeds and 57 miles per hour north 101. as you work your way towards that 880 connector. well, today is bike to wherever day and cities across the bay area celebrating pedal power and biking. the silicon valley bike coalition is offering snacks and gifts to bikers at enuser stations like this one in san jose and san francisco mayor breed will be rolling into city hall this morning for a rally. well, also in san francisco, cyclists came together last night to honor people who were killed or injured while biking in the city. roughly 50 bikers took part in a ride of silence. andrea nakano was there and talked today one survivor of a horrific hit and run who says the people who lost their lives on bicycles, they deserve to be remembered . >> reporter: alex temez is

embracing her second chance at life. >> i'm supergrateful that my friend paul didn't have to make a ghost bike for me. >> reporter: in 2022, she was biking home from work when she was hit from behind while stopped at red light. as a result, she suffered a traumatic brain injury. >> i luckily don't have any memories of the accident at all. >> reporter: she says the accident also wiped out a year's worth of memories from her life. she also has physical scars from her injuries. >> i had a tracheotomy and a feeding tube and i still have pain from the feeding tube even though it's gone. it's been gone for two years now. >> reporter: for temez this ride of sigh slyness is a way for her to honor the victims, the ride has seven stops where bikers lost their lives. but every single victim since 1997 is remembered. >> this was someone's daughter. a son. a petty cab operator. >> reporter: paul valdez is considered the unofficial bike mayor of san francisco and

helped to organize the event. he mourns every life lost but there's one day he will always remember when two people were killed on their bikes just hours apart. >> i will never forget that day. never forget where i was and how painful that was for me personally and our community. we just did not know what -- why did that happen? you know. >> reporter: one of the stops was here at 3rd and mission bay where clark gashel was killed in 2017. every year, his mother comes out to greet the riders. >> i'm grateful. i am -- to me, culturally, we own our people, family. and this is -- creating his own friends. and honoring those who come to honor him. i honor. >> reporter: the goal of this ride is to remember. >> every single person who has died in san francisco on a bike, deserves to be remembered. they're not just a number or a name. they're a whole person. >> reporter: but also to raise

awareness about bike safety in hopes of saving a life. >> well, the city has rolled out new safety measures to try to keep bicyclists and pedestrians safe. now recently, the city approved the installation of more than 30 cameras that will automatically ticket speeding drivers. they also lowered speed limits in the tenderloin and installed new protected bike lanes. so hopefully that helps. president joe biden and former president donald trump have agreed to two debates. one on june 27th and the other on september 10th. these debates are not expected to include a live audience. in fact, the biden campaign wants moderators to be able to cut the mic to limit interruptions. meanwhile, dr. will be back in a new york courtroom listening to the prosecution's star witness in the hush money trial today. defense lawyers will continue to try to chip away at trump's former attorney and fixer, michael cohen. he testified yesterday while also testifying today. mr. trump faces 34 counts of falsifying financial

good morning, everybody. it's 35:43. time now for the money watch report. signs of tech tensions overseas and you know microsoft is asking some of its employees in china to consider moving out of the country. here's what we know this morning. the "wall street journal" reports 700, 800 microsoft staffers have received offers to traffic to other countries including the u.s., ireland, australia and new zealand. most of them though are engineers working on artificial intelligence. and cloud computing. this coming as washington cracks down on beijing's access to this advanced technology. meanwhile, general motors is opening the new tech hub in silicon valley. the new operation in mountain view aimed at driving tech innovation for gm vehicles. the 50,000 square feet site will employ more than 200 software engineers and research and development staff. well, royal watchers are seeing red. i am too. the first official portrait of king charles iii was just unveiled. and there is a whole lot of red. the king's entire body is

over the santa clara valley are still apparent for us this morning. we have 70s in the forecast later this afternoon. near san jose and los gatos. we'll warm up into the 60s near redwood city today so just a degree cooler compared to where we were at yesterday. we'll continue to watch that marine layer kind of hold on tight to us for longer this morning later into the afternoon we top out of in the 60s near napa and sonoma and all the way down into novato as well. drop the map and show you what's going on on futurecast. it's been a pretty mild week a very quiet weather week. no rain in the forecast for us. the climate prediction center showing drier than normal conditions for the next six to ten days. what's going on? high pressure just offshore delivering near normal temperatures for our daytime highs. and other than that, the big talk of the town is just all the may gray. that's been holding on tight to us in the early morning hours. pulling back like a blanket kind of just sleeping in. along the coastline as we head into the afternoon hours. this is by lunchtime. san francisco split directly in half. the whole peninsula similar trend. we have clear skies off near napa and concord and over into

livermore and back down into san jose. we'll continue to see cool and cloudy conditions near bodega bay and san francisco and half-moon bay into the afternoon hours. and that's the same trend as we head into this weekend's forecast too. so to answer read's question. bay the breakers is right around the corner and for everyone gearing up and getting ready to go. we're expecting low 50s in the morning hours and upper 50s closer to lunchtime. that's all day event. just because the run is over doesn't mean the fun is over. people if you are heading out to mission dolores and any fun parks afterwards, keep that in mind it's still going to be a cool one for us in the afternoon hours. for example, san francisco, and oakland, we're only topping off in the upper 60s heading into our sunday forecast. luckily more sunshine into the monday to kick off next week. but that's when the weekend is over and we'll continue to see partly cloudy skies on the back end of that. and other than that, if you live in the inland areas, those 60s quickly turn into 70s. you will notice a lot warmer weather as we head into early next week too. all throughout the inland areas. low 80s in the forecast by monday and tuesday. we average out in the 70s by mid next week. g?

all right, let's take a look at the roadways right now getting ready to hop on over to the bay bridge. it's already starting to back up. metering lights are officially on. the backup not to the overpass just yet but certain lid building this morning. looking elsewhere. southbound 880 zoom in here out of hayward down into the fremont area. there's a crash blocking a couple of lanes. right at whipple road. so that backup beyond 92 at this point. so extra busy and extra slow as you head through there. and if you want to use mission instead, 680 also looking pretty good. if you have that option working your way south of there. now it's still pretty busy westbound 580 near grant line. that's where there's a crash clearing over to the shoulder. so you have got a slow ride out of tracy getting into the altamont pass and supercommuters heads-up through there and things starting to get busy westbound 80, highway 4 to the maze looks like things are starting to back up just a little bit and a quick live look here at the golden gate bridge. visibility still looks pretty good but a
