attacked the husband of former house speaker nancy pelosi will spend decades in prison. >> good evening. i'm ryan yamamoto. that assault happened at the couple's san francisco home in november 2022. body camera video from arriving officers showing the moment dave depape hit paul pelosi with a hammer. reporter elise preston was in court today as depape learned his sentence. >> reporter: ryan, david depa was sentenced to 30 years for the violent attack on paul pelosi and attempted kidnapping of the former speaker of house nancy pelosi. the judge handed down the decision today saying depape harmed all americans when he broke into the family's home in october 2022. the attack was captured on police body camera video. today the couple's daughter christine read victim impact statements in court. in those statements the pelosis mention their home still has blood stations, visual reminders of the crime scene. the family and prosecution asked for 40 years. depape's defense argued for 14

years citing he didn't have a criminal history and was not a threat to the public. the defense also pointed to sentencing in the january 6th attack saying that those defendants who were convicted of trying to overthrow the government didn't see sentences as harsh as 40 years. the judge called the defense's analogy of january 6th inadequate saying depape was still a danger to society and other officials. now depape also faces charges in state court. that trial gets underway later this month. >> jury selection in depape 8 state trial is set to begin next wednesday in san francisco. he's accused of attempted murder among other charges. the republican convention is now underway in burlingame. this weekend's event at the hyatt regency will feature south dakota governor christie nome and rnc co-chair lara trump. steve garvey will not be

there since announcing his . the president of sonoma state announcing his retirement the day after being placed on administrative leave. this comes after mike lee sent a campuswide controversial email announcing a deal with pro palestinian protesters on campus without approval from csu chancellor. it included an advisory council for justice in palestine, a boycott of academic and research institutions sponsored by israel and calling for a permanent ceasefire in gaza. lee later apologized for that agreement. at uc berkeley police cleared out a group of pro palestinian protesters who occupied the anna head complex. after an hours long standoff riot police broke down the doors yesterday and they arrested at least 12 people. the university says they were taken into custody after someone started hitting an officer with a crowbar. in the meantime the union representing thousands of uc workers has voted to authorize a strike over protest crackdowns. the

union represents researchers, teacher assistants, and other academic workers. it's not clear yet when or where those walkouts will happen. turning to the weather, the sun making an appearance this afternoon in the city after a foggy morning along the bay and the weather will be crucial for one of this weekend's big events as that fog is rolling back in again. first alert chief meteorologist paul heggen has a look at the beta breakers and what it's going to look like sunday. >> probably a lot like the past few mornings but maybe a little bit more sunshine peeking through on the bay side of the city as things are getting started. as they make their way towards the breakers, they'll be running back into the fog and temperatures will be cool. temperatures will start in the low 50s and climbing to the upper 50s by the end of the race, but that's the downtown temperature. on the breaker side along the coast temperatures will probably be hovering in the mid-50s. that's not the only thing going on this weekend, the giants playing a three-game series against the colorado

rockies, tonight's start time 7:15. it steadily cools off as the fog and low cloud cover begins to spread in. antioch temperatures 80 degrees both saturday and sunday which is warm, but it is normal for this time of year. we'll keep that going heading into much of next week. we've got an early look ahead at memorial day weekend coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks, paul. street closures will be in place when all those costume runners take off on sunday, some without costumes. gianna franco has more on what you need to know. >> reporter: thousands of runners will be heading to san francisco sunday for beta breakers. the race starts on the east end of the city near main and howard and travels west ending towards the great highway. street closures are planned, some starting saturday night at 7:00. the race begins at 8:00 a.m. sunday. the rest of the closures along the course will begin several hours before that and hopefully wrap

up before 4:00 p.m. multiple entrances to golden gate park are affected. reroutes for muni, heads up and check the schedule, maybe consider using b.a.r.t. if you're coming into san francisco. one of the major issues during last year's actors and writers strike in hollywood, performers demanding control how their images and voices are used. now a possible breakthrough. >> anytime that i see developments in a.i., particularly as they relate to voice, it concerns me for independent artists. >> coming up at 5:30, how a new partnership could help artists and performers take control over the rights to their own images and voices. a little bit of excitement there. for more than a decade residents in one bay area neighborhood have waited for the grocery are so that they were promised and today that promise was fulfilled. the new store in hayes valley means hundreds of low income families and seniors now have a supermarket in walking distance. our kevin ko is live

in hayes valley where he spoke to people about why this means so much to them. kevin, a lot of excitement, but you also found people with some concerns about this location. >> reporter: yeah. those worries are because of a few local markets here in hayes valley which, by the way, does have a ban on retail chains, but after receiving a special exemption just a few years ago, trader joe's is officially open. >> we've just been waiting for this place to open. >> reporter: eddie lowe and his dog fillet have lived in hayes valley the past four years. this is fillet's is first walk outside his new local grocery store. >> i heard this morning it was quite busy. >> we're so excited you're here to share the opening with us. >> reporter: that's autumn dougherty, captain of the news hayes valley trader joe's. she and about 70% of the store's crew members live in hayes

valley. >> i'm a part of this neighborhood and so for me it's definitely great that i get to be a part of giving this community what we need. this community has been waiting for this for such a long time. >> reporter: it's been more than a decade long effort according to a hayes valley neighborhood association member i spoke with today. that included trader joe's receiving a special exemption to a local ban on retail chains, a rule that helped small businesses stand out. >> none of the businesses have been adversely affected by trader joe's. >> reporter: paul has been living in hayes valley for 35 years, 18 years for casper, his cockatoo. >> he goes everywhere with me. >> reporter: he's happy his neighborhood finally has a grocery store nearby, but he worries local mom and pop shops will lose customers. >> i have no doubt that it actually will unfortunately, but that's progress. we've got a trader joe's here now. it's a pretty big monolith,

well liked one, but even so it's probably going to affect smaller businesses. >> reporter: but others like eddie lowe think trader joe's offers more affordability to hayes valley residents, where an inability to buy groceries nearby meant facing high prices. >> do a lot of cooking upstairs. for example, all these corner stores, if you forget one tomato, you're paying 6 or $7 at these corner stores. i understand that it's like competing against the big store now, but maybe that competition is good because i think it will lower some of the prices over there. >> reporter: now, ryan, i also did check in with a few locals here today about possible safety concerns. keep in mind there are a couple security guards inside of trader joe's right now. everyone i talked to today tell me they are staying optimistic. >> kevin ko live in hayes valley, thank you. welcome to the team. still ahead, we're hearing from the world's top-ranked golfer after he was arrested just hours before he was scheduled to hit the course today. >> i didn't really know. i was

and debris. the city is now in recovery mode which city leaders say could take some time. >> we are going to have to talk about this disaster in weeks, not days. >> crews are now working to get that power back on for residents of both texas and louisiana where residents there were also hit with hurricane force winds. the number one player on the pga tour found himself in handcuffs and in jail only hours before his tee time after he allegedly injured a police officer when he drove through the scene of a fatal accident. danya bacchus has the latest from the pga championships. >> reporter: scottie scheffler eventually teed off at the pga championship in louisville friday after a chaotic morning that landed him in jail. >> he's going to jail and there ain't nothing you can do about it. >> reporter: the world's number one-ranked golfer faces numerous charges, including assaulting a police officer. it all happened after a fatal road accident that caused a massive

traffic jam heading to the golf course. police say scheffler disobeyed orders to stop his car, accelerated forward, and dragged an officer to the ground. >> i believe he attempted to explain who he was and why he was trying to get onto the golf course, but i'm not sure that that information quite got to the police. >> reporter: scheffler said in a statement he was proceeding as directedly by officers and that it was a big misunderstanding of what i thought i was told to do. i never intended to disregard any of the instructions. >> i feel like still spinning. >> reporter: despite the hectic morning, scheffler shot a 5 under 66, one stroke better than thursday. >> coming out trying to play today was definitely a challenge, but i did my best to control my mind, control my breathing. >> reporter: the 27-year-old golfer has hired a local attorney. >> moving pretty fast at this time, but we'll litigate the

case as it comes. >> reporter: scheffler is the hottest player on the pga tour. the master's champ is seeking his fifth win in six starts in a second consecutive major title. >> matt lively will have much more from one of the wildest days in golf history later on in sports. a section of highway 1 near big sur is back open. this is video from caltrans showing some of the first cars driving through earlier this morning, a portion of the scenic highway closed back in march when a storm triggered a landslide and a chunk of road fell to the ocean below. that closure impacted people and businesses in the area that rely on tourism. the highway reopened eight days ahead of schedule. calfire crews are working getting ready for the fire season. ten hand crews were in humboldt county going through testing how to respond on the front lines. they're graded on everything from how they eat lunch to using the restroom

properly. then there's that hike test. >> it's 2.8 miles mainly uphill. so they hike it full gear with full water. we time them on that. >> it's right about 65 minutes and if you come in faster than 60 minutes, then you're hiking a little bit too fast. you need to pace yourself a little better. coming in over 70 minutes, then you are a little bit too slow. everybody keeps a proper spacing, a ten foot spacing, and they communicate along the way of hazards on the road. >> that ten feet of space is for safety because all that gear they're carrying including chainsaws and because lives are on the line, it's a must pass or they have to take it again. let's check in with first alert meteorologist, paul heggen. we've been talking about the rain and cool temperatures. now it's time to switch gears and talk about fire season. >> especially once we start to get some warmer weather in place, which we haven't had

any extensive heatwaves to this point in the season, but it's bound to happen for inland parts of the bay area. in store for the weekend we have a continuation of this generally calm weather pattern, typical mid-may weather in place. the storm track is way up to our north in british columbia and northern sections of the pacific northwest. here we are with our normal may weather including normal may temperatures this evening. temperatures now are 60s to the 70s with a few 50s, 72 degrees in novato and just 68 degrees in the north bay, 60 degrees in san francisco, 64 degrees in oakland, along the coast the cool spots as usual, been tough to shake the fog again today, 57 degrees for half moon bay, mid-60s redwood city, upper 60s in fremont, warmer temperatures farther inland, 80 degrees in antioch and the santa clara valley a mix of upper 60s and

low 70s. let's talk about what happens through the rest of the extended forecast. the foggy pattern will be with us. you see behind me not a whole lot of fog on the bay bridge yet. it's going to spread in as we head through this evening and tonight. reduced visibility to start the day saturday, but the fog will back up to the coast by late morning, should see some sunshine peeking through for the rest of the bay area with mostly sunny skies inland and i think sunday we'll have a better chance of seeing even some sunshine breaking through along the coast. temperatures tonight mostly low to mid-50s, cool spots in the valley upper 40s and high temperatures tomorrow everyone within a few degrees of normal for this time of year, mid- to upper 60s around the bay with mostly 70s inland. we'll zoom in for a closer look. along the coast it's upper 50s, low to mid-70s down the peninsula, mid- to upper 70s in the santa clara valley, temperatures inland in

the east bay far inland are the warmest, 80 in antioch, 81 degrees brentwood and most other temperatures around the mid- to upper 70s, mid- to upper 60s for san francisco and oakland and the north bay, not as warm as other inland parts of the bay area because the fog takes longer to back up, 60s until you go much farther north with low 80s in inland mendocino county and lake county. we've got the ten-day temperature outlook because within that time frame we've got memorial day weekend. we've got a warm-up early next week, temperatures in san francisco climbing to the upper 60s and retreat to near or slight libre he lo average ly below average levels. tuesday up into the mid-80s for livermore and then retreating closer to normal and then a little below average heading into the three-day holiday weekend. let's look at the seven-day forecast. we've got plenty of time to worry about memorial day weekend because it's still in the ten-day outlook, a long way to go in forecasting terms.

temperatures are going up and down a bit. looks like monday and tuesday are the warmest days inland with highs in the hope to mid 80s and then everybody drops down closer to normal and a similar progression around the bay, not quite as really violent with the ups and downs, but low to mid-70s a few days, especially monday and tuesday. temperatures along the coast manage to warm up to a slightly noticeable extent to the low 60s a few days and more sunshine peeking through the clouds sunday, monday and tuesday for coastal parts of the bay area and then the may gray is back. coming up, you'll meet the man who went from a tech entrepreneur to finding a unique way of cleaning pollution at our ports with essentially a giant vacuum. >> it's super important to find the reason why you want to do something. plus we got an update on the injury to the giants rookie sensation jung hoo lee after his nasty looking collision with the outfield wall and it's not looking good.

people living near the martinez refinery could see flaring until the end of the month. the company says they're wrapping up a major maintenance project and need to restart their equipment. that could cause flaring until each unit is up and running. the refinery says it will try to minimize or prevent flaring during the restart process. when it comes to pollution, there's one type that's often overlooked, but it has a huge impact, the emissions from ports, but at the port of oakland one man is making waves with a device that's basically a giant vacuum cleaner. our itay hod met up with him to see how it works.

the vessel where a long elephant-like trump comes down and we put that over the top of the stack and that's where the emissions are gathered. >> reporter: a 2020 study done in spain showed 265,000 premature deaths were attributed to global shipping emissions. state regulations require vessels to plug into an electrical grid known as shore power which allows ships to turn off their engines while at berth, but that's not always possible. >> any given year we see around 8,000 vessel visits. >> reporter: the air resources supervisor at the california air and resources board says the problem is many of these ships are too old and don't have the infrastructure to connect to a power grid. >> we do see as a very good alternative for vessels to use it if they don't want to invest into shore power. >> reporter: today mike and his team are helping a vessel whose electrical outlet is too far to

reach. a massive bendable arm is deployed from the barge and hovers over the ship. an engineer then connects it to the smokestack like a giant range hood. within seconds the black smoke is gone. >> we get to see in very clear terms the smoke going away from being distributed out into the air and being captured into these systems. so it's a really almost instant gratification. >> reporter: sailing towards a sustainable future while trying to keep our planet on course. coming up at 5:30, is the voice real or artificial intelligence? the new protection for actors and performers. >> anytime i see developments in a.i. particularly as they relate to voice it concerns me. and some troubling news on the unemployment front in california as the state earns a dubious distinction.
