francisco neighborhood finally has a grocery store and it is not fitting the community it is employing them. >> i am part of this neighborhood. for me it is definitely great that i get to be part of giving this community what we need. a golf star arrested hours before the pga championship. he even did his warm ups in jail. how he did after he was released. this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. good evening. the week send upon us. the perfect time to hit the road and explore. tonight, an iconic stretch of the highway back open to the bay area. we are talking about highway 1 near the rocky creek bridge south of monterey. the first cars were allowed to pass through just this morning. the road was shutdown a month and a

half ago. there was limited access to big sur. people that lived and worked there were only allowed in and out twice a day in convoys. for us in the bay area the reopening of highway 1 reopens access to three of the state parks. visitors are welcome. camping will not open until next thursday. not everyone has equal access to state parks and the great outdoors. and a former teacher from oakland is trying to change that. opening up new experiences for teens through nature. >> reporter: growing up in mexico. spending weekends sleeping under the stars, hiking hills, and soaking in the midst from waters off of the coast of baja. >> the first time you put together a camping tent. it is like being in another planet. >> a former public schoolteacher turned his passion into the outdoors of

what is his lifelong mission to bring joy of nature to inner city children in oakland that has seen more concrete in the day than green for most of their lives >> when they are outdoors they forget about their worries and problems. it gives them a rest. >> it makes your body more relaxed. like, you feel less stressed out than what you are in the city. >> the executive director. a nonprofit catering to neighborhoods in oakland. not only do reservations for some of the state's idealic and sought-after camp sites have to get booked half a year in advance there are other roadblocks, too. >> there are clear barriers like money, transportation, equipment. % services recent survey found 13% of visitors in 2018 were latino. in 2020 they found 67% of latinos live in a

a few minutes. colorado rockies and first pitch of the game is 10 minutes away. game two is tomorrow in the afternoon. the temperatures reaching up in the middle 60s in the afternoon. a nice day overall. there is the contra costa fair happening. inland of the east bay, the temperatures will be warmer, not hot, not for this time of the year. topping out around 80 degrees saturday and sunday. we will have the full weekend forecast for the entire bay area coming up in a few minutes. >> paul, thank you. the man who brutally attacked the head of nancy pelosi will spend decades in prison. he was sentenced today and pelosi's daughter talked. talking about 1 1/2 years later the family is still reminded of the attack every day. >> reporter: sentenced to 30 years for the violent attack on paul pelosi. the judge handed

down the decision today saying he broke into the home. the attack was on police body camera video. today, the couple's daughter read victim impact statements in court on behalf of her parents. the statements they mentioned that their home still has bloodstains, the reminders of the crime scene. the family and prosecution asked for 40 years. his defense argued for just 14 years citing he did not have criminal history and he is not a threat to the public. the defense pointed to sentencing in the january 6th attack saying those defendants who were convicted of trying to overthrow the government did not see sentences has harsh as 40 years. they called the -- that way of thinking inadequate. he faces charges in state court.. at uc santa cruz, planning to have a strike in response to

the crack down of the demonstrations. uc santa cruz is calling it illegal. saying a strike violates the no-strike clause in the union's contract with the university. they are one of the campuses where students set up anti-war encampments. at uc berkeley the police cleared out protesters who occupied the complex. after an hour's long standoff, riot police broke down the doors yesterday and arrested 12 people. the university says they were taken into custody after people started hitting officers with a crowbar. for more than a decade residents have been waiting for the grocery store they were promised. today that promise was fulfilled. a new trader joe's opened up in hayes valley. it means hundreds of low income families and seniors

have a super market within walking distance. >> we have been waiting for this place to open. >> reporter: eddie and his dog have been living here for four years. this is his first walk, outside, his new local grocery store. >> i heard this morning it was busy. >> we are excited that you are all here to share this with us. >> that is the captain of the new hayes family trader joe's. >> i am part of this neighborhood. for me it is definitely great that i get to be a part of giving this community what we need. this community has been waiting for this for such a long time >> it has been more than a decade-long effort according to a neighborhood association member i spoke with today. including trader joe's receiving an exception to a local ban on retail chains. a rule that helped small businesses stand out.

>> none of the businesses are effected by trader joe's. >> he has been living in hayes valley for thrive years, 18 for his cockatoo. >> he goes everywhere because i can not bring him in. >> reporter: he is happy his neighborhood has a grocery store nearby. but, he worries local mom-and-pop shops will lose customers. >> i have no doubt it will, unfortunately. but, you know, that is progress. we have a trader joe's here now. it is a well liked one. even so it will effect the smaller businesses. >> reporter: others like eddie thinks they offer more affordability to residents. inability to buy groceries nearby meant facing high prices. >> i do a lot of cooking upstairs, all of the corner stores if you forget one tomato you are paying $6 or $7. i understand it is competing

of the pga championship. he was stuck in a traffic jam after a deadly accident and he was arrested after going around a police roadblock and ignored ordered to stop and dragged a officer to the ground. the police report put the officer's pants at $80 were damaged beyond repair. matt is here to break it down. this story, two sides of the story. he definitely cleared it up by saying it was a misunderstanding. >> unreal scenes as you know, that is how you describe it. the last thing that you expect. scottie scheffler in a orange jumpsuit. he was booked and put in the jump shot for a mug shot. then, he returned an hour before his tee time. he played. he barely warmed up f. he was rattled i don't think you would know it by watching him. he stuck the approach shot on the first hole. that set up one of six burdies on the round. he

effort clothed one. temperatures on the cool side. in the 50s throughout the race. we will see the sun breaking through the fog and low cloud cover earlier than has been the case over the past several days. that is good news and along the coast. sunshine breaking through as the racers reach the breakers late sunday morning the big picture weather pattern not shifting a lot. typical may weather. the storm track way up to the north. not a lot of wholesale changes in store for us. temperatures tomorrow, close to where they are today. take a closer look at the observed higher temperatures, lower 70s in napa, upper 60s for petaluma and san francisco. that is just 1 degree short of what is normal for this time of the year. 81 degrees in antioch. that is the warm spot. middle 70s for livermore. contrast that with along the coast, 61 degrees t is the normal high temperature. it will be stuck in the upper 50s tomorrow. in

the santa clara, cooler. let's take a look at what is going to change if anything heading through the weekend. right now, we have those temperatures that are retreating into the 60s even the 50s in a number of spots including san francisco and oakland in the upper 50s right now. the fog making its way through golden gate. alcatraz heading through. the fog will continue to spread across the bay and in the inland valleys. but, like the past few mornings not taking long to back up to the coast. midday, plenty of sunshine for most of the bay area. the clearing trend should be faster on sunday. a wind shift will help us out. that is why sunday will be the slightly warmer half. lowtory middle 50s to begin the day tomorrow. average towards the middle of may. the coolest spots, dipping into the upper 40s. high temperatures tomorrow, showed you this earlier, everyone within 5 degrees on either side of what is normal. a closer look. upper

50s. short of 60 degrees tomorrow. and then lower to middle 70s down the peninsula. middle to upper 70s the warmer spots along with far inland parts of the east bay. antioch, brentwood. the rest of it in the upper 70s. bayside, temperatures in the 60s. including 64 degrees for san francisco. the north bay also a bit cooler like today. upper 60s to 70. until you go farther north into lake county and more likely to get up into the lower 80s. 83 degrees in clear lake. one of the warmer spots around the region. like today, the past several days, the winds picking up in the afternoon. a calm start to the day. the winds gusting up to the 25-30 mile-an-hour range, closer to the coast by late saturday afternoon. still an onshore breeze in store for us for the future. let's take a look at the forecast. we will start with the coast side locations where we are going to be seeing the temperatures not changing a lot. there is a baby warm up in store for us heading into the

first half of next week, lower 60s. really what you will notice along the coast is more shine, sunday, monday, tuesday, breaking through the clouds earlier in the day. the warm up, more noticeable around the bay. a modest warming trend, sunday through wednesday sending the temperatures bayside. then back to the middle 60s as we finish up the workweek. looking through ahead to memorial day weekend. likely seeing below average temperatures, just beyond the scope of the seven-day forecast for now. we will keep you updated on that as we get closer to the end of next week. showing you the inland forecast. there are inland temperatures, in the lower to middle 80s. still around 80 degrees oned with before we are back to near average on thursday and friday. joules? >> paul, . >> jules? >> paul, thank you. panda politics. trying to bring the fluff balls to san francisco is getting push back

in nevato. the oldest oak tree there split in half and hit two homes. the homes were red tagged but no injuries reported. san francisco mayor london breed trying to bring pandas from china is getting push back. they need to raise money to care and house the animals at the zoo. yesterday, the board of supervisors postponed her fundraising plans the mayor's office says they will work with the city departments and supervisors to make sure they secure the private funding they need to welcome the pandas. a little dog got into a little bit of trouble after getting stuck in a wall. it was not an easy rescue. we will tell you about it. happy ending, though

. we all know dogs can get in all sorts of trouble when we are not looking but this family's dog in orange county found itself in a tight space. look at that. 2-year-old faye was stuck inside of her family's walls near the bathroom after climbing into an access door that her owners thought was too narrow for her to get through. firecrews were able to save faye by breaking open the wall with a sledge hammer and safely getting her out. is that a lab? >> they went beyond duty to get her out safely. >> in a facebook post they say faye is already planning her next bit of mischief and they
