calling for help. their worries the city's money troubles could lead to cut in public safety. let's start here, though a man is in the hospital this morning with life threatening injuries after san jose police say they were forced to shoot him. it happened while officers responded to reports of somebody firing a gun in that area of colmar drive yesterday. after a while police shot their suspect and got a gun recovered from the scene we'll continue watching this 1 closely and let you know what develops as police investigate. to oakland, her job. the signatures came in a month ahead of schedule, some in oakland. blame mayor tied for robberies on the rise there some crime is down, though nearly a 3rd from some 2023. although robberies are up another east bay elected official facing a recall alameda county d, a pamela price after certifying the signatures needed for a recall, supervisors put the question to

in those rain chances as we head into this work week forecast a little bit breezier into the afternoon hours like will notice today, but the weather is warm and it is dry all throughout the bay wind gusts along our shorelines anywhere up to around 25 to 30 mph expected around that 3:00 hour as many of us are wrapping up work and school will be a bit breezy in case you want to head out to the park, so just keep that in mind, but at least the weather is beautiful and definitely warm, too. in our inland areas. we're expecting 70s today, just like yesterday with 50s and 60s along our coastline. cooler and breezy along the coast near pacifica, but those winds start to die down. the more inland we go, and today topping off 80 degrees, let's head over to san francisco real fast where we had bay to breakers over the weekend, and it was beautiful. it was mild and we have 60s in the forecast once again all the way north along the golden gate bridge, a similar trend 60s, turning into 70s from santa rosa to windsor. you continue to move north suddenly we hit the 80s in areas like you, kaya all the way over in the lakeport. all right, jess, thanks looking live at oakland this morning where you're waking up to news of the city.

coming up short for the money they need to keep the city running. in fact, there's a projected 176. 0 0 budget shortfall, so you see the demonstrators here behind me? that's why they came out in force worried about potential cuts to public safety programs. during a time when crime is driving business out of oakland city leaders have not said yet how they plan on making it up that shortfall, but these demonstrators they were out loud and proud. in fact, they tell our da lin that any kind of public safety would set the city back more than any deficit could >>budget. to us about it. >>mayor shang thao say they worried the deficit will worsen public safety. concern. about oakland today. and >>oakland >>tomorrow. they're not alone. some fear the large deficit could result in less police officers in their neighborhood. the police officers that are usually here at the lake during the busy season are doing overtime. so if they cut that, then there's a good chance we won't have those resources. alameda as the chair of lake merritt community alliance

neighbors often have to call for officers to open up lanes on lakeshore avenue and nearby streets. on recent weekends, large parties along the lake lead to drive evers, double and triple parking. some people even parked on the grass emergency vehicles couldn't get through. we saw a fire truck gets stuck on bellevue couldn't get through because of all the illegal parking it was completely backed up. people couldn't leave or come home. neighbors say some of the parking issues have led to confrontations like this. leann says many city workers won't come to address these problems without police escort due to safety concerns, but i'm really worried if we go into this budget deficit and they decided to pull the resources from the lake, we are going to be back where we were during the pandemic. referring to this mass shooting on lake shore avenue and other rowdy parties, while the mayor says she will prioritize public safety. concerns, she will come back on police overtime felt like we are rock bottom. so if anything

that has to do with security is caught. he's going to just get worse lobby says rampant car break ins forced him to close his downtown sports bar in march, he says customers stopped coming and he ran out of money. everybody before you pay yourself, there's been moment that i have to drive uber just to pay out my my staff. that's how hard it's been. admits there are no easy solutions and any cuts will hurt the city's progress. i don't know how they're going to mean it is very it's dark. budget deficit. how helping improve mental health with the power of a i, the bay area team

909 in the morning at san cruz. teaching his assistants, too. and student workers. will strike today. in response to the university's crackdown on pro palestinian demonstrations. uc santa cruz says the strikes are illegal, saying a strike directly violates the no strike clause. in the union's contract with the university. to oakland. now we're in about 20 minutes or so, bay area power couple stephanie shakuri will help cut the ribbon for their state of the art remodeled schoolyard at piedmont avenue elementary school. congratulations to them. yeah. it's all part of their mission to transform 25 schoolyards in the oakland area

communities like stinson beach and all the way up into the north bay we go beautiful, warm, dry weather for us as we head into this afternoon, it will be a little bit nastier, though, as we head into the afternoon hours. advancing the clock all the way to dinner time even close to 3:00 we're noticing that onshore wind with gusts anywhere up to around 30 >>mph >>notice how that continues >>to be >>the same trend into the >>evening >>hours tonight. breezy along the coast. lighter >>winds in >>our inland areas, but let's take a look at the next 7 days. lots of sunshine in the forecast for us, especially if you live anywhere from san francisco across the bay bridge in oakland, and partly oakland with partly cloudy skies, mostly >>in >>the morning hours, it'll be warm. it will be dry as we had all longer weeks forecast in our inland east bay, but notice how the 80s turned into 60s by the weekend. like i said, small day to day changes are in the forecast for us cooler conditions by the weekend. will also notice that in areas like the north bay all the way over into san jose 70 for now, turning into upper 60s as early as saturday, averaging out into the 70s by early next week. down to a live look at san francisco this morning, where thousands of runners show the

as we celebrate api heritage month of building in the heart. heart of san fran. japantown is poised, undergo a major facelift after a huge community fundraising effort proponents say it's a symbol of survival as other relatives relics of just disappeared in that neighborhood because of urban renewal. they are about to lose this building if it weren't for the people you see here behind me, kenny choi got a look at what the building once was. what it now is and what it will be for generations to come. >>yeah. matsuda vividly remembers when she would come to kingman gakuin as a child every week. place where you learned about community it was a place where you learned about your cultural heritage, and i think that was very important for us. the san francisco

native attended japanese language classes every saturday morning. so did generations. of japanese americans before her when the language school opened in 1911. it was always a lively, lively venue for many, many people. and then world war 2 happened and everyone had to leave. gakuin translated into english golden gate institute became a processing center as japanese american citizens or forcibly sent to internment camps starting in 1940. in exchange for giving their family name. they were given an id number. they were no longer humans. they were literally a piece of government property. innocence. since, uh the building is a kind of a symbol. sf state professor masahiko minami, who specializes in japanese language and cross cultural studies, says the racist policies of the san francisco school board mandating in 1906 the children of chinese, korean and japanese descent. attendant oriental

school in chinatown led to a massive effort by the japanese community. that establishment people. japanese people gathered together and setup. up educators taught japanese and english to newer immigrants. to 031. bush street became a central gathering place for the community. but after world war 2 many parts of japantown started to fade away. redevelopment came through and ripped apart. a lot of the homes and businesses in japantown. we were lucky that this building was spared. matsuda and fellow board members have secured city and state grants of 10 million to turn a dilapidated auditorium into a 21st century performing arts center. they say more is needed to modernize the rest of the historic building. recently landmark by the city. chinese any means bringing history to our future. sifting through old pictures reminds them of kingman gakuin. quinn's past. it's really important for
