aisle going completely horizontal, hitting the ceiling and landing back down. >> terror at 37,000 feet. a plane hits severe turbulence sending everything and everyone flying. a passenger dies, dozens bloodied and injured. what went wrong. and under fire. former president trump trying to walk back two controversial campaign issues while his rival, president biden, issues a blistering rebuke. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. there seems to be no relief from these unrelenting storms hammering the midsection. millions are under the threat of severe weather again. multiple people were killed in iowa after tornadoes ripped through the state yesterday. but officials haven't released an exact number. the damage is extensive. homes and businesses reduced to rubble, mounds of broken wood, tree branches, car parts, and other debris littered the land where homes once stood.

among the hardest hit places, the small city of greenfield. around 55 miles southwest of des moines. cbs' jarred hill is here with the breaking details. good morning. >> good morning. you know, what's so terrible about these storms is you can see in the video that you sometimes will have these paths of destruction, but then just a few blocks away, buildings seemingly untouched. devastating right here. now when iowa state police were asked about how many people were dead, the response was "we are still counting." >> that's a big tornado. >> reporter: severe storms spawned a deadly tornado outbreak in iowa. twisters took down large wind turbines, snapping some nearly in half, sparking a fire that sent black smoke billowing into the air. the town of greenfield, about an hour west of the state's capital des moines, is reeling after a tornado tore through homes and businesses. >> this tornado has devastated a good portion of this town and community. >> reporter: iowa state police say multiple people were killed and at least a dozen injured.

>> the greenfield community has a long road ahead of them, but if their actions today are any indication of what lies ahead, they will emerge stronger and more united than ever. >> reporter: storms in minnesota split trees, while heavy rain flooded roads leaving some cars stranded. in nebraska, flash floods left streets, cornfields, and some homes submerged. >> it was so much water. >> reporter: tracy dunn in omaha says she doesn't have anything left. >> i've lost everything -- everything. >> reporter: now as the storms move east, the national weather service is warning more communities will likely face heavy rain and possibly tornadoes. absolutely terrible. so storms knocked out power to over 100,000 customers in wisconsin, illinois, and iowa, and then there is texas. we talked about this before. there are still thousands of people without power from last week's storm. the heat is a growing concern there, as well. >> oh, man. thank you very much.

this morning an investigation is under way into a terrifying and deadly singapore airlines flight from london. the plane hit severe turbulence at 37,000 feet over the indian ocean leaving one person dead, dozens injured, some of them critically. kris van cleave has more on what happened and passengers who experienced it. >> reporter: passengers describe a sudden drop during a meal service that left passengers bloodied, overhead bins and oxygen masks dangling, dented ceilings, and debris everywhere. >> during the few seconds of the plane dropping, there was awful screaming. >> reporter: it happened ten hours into flight 321 as it approached thailand. the trip from london to singapore. there were storms in the area when preliminary flight data show the plane appeared to encounter a sudden turbulent event last being a minute. -- last being a minute. it launched unbelted passengers and crew into the ceiling, leaving dozens injured and a

73-year-old british man dead of a possible heart attack. a line of ambulances met the boeing 777-300 after an emergency landing in bangkok. >> just sudden drop. the thing i remember the most was the objects and things flying through the air. there was a poor elderly lady with a gash in her head. covered in blood. >> reporter: among the 211 passengers and 18 crew on board, at least four americans, one said to be among the injured. 30 people were taken to the hospital according to the airline. seven in critical condition. >> it's extremely rare to have a turbulence event result in fatalities. >> reporter: former ntsb chair robert sumwalt. >> what i would call this right now is an in-flight upset. whether that is a result of atmospheric turbulence or the result of something else. >> reporter: too early to know for sure? >> too early at this point. >> reporter: injuries from turbulent are rare. the faa says develop 2009 and 2022 in the united states, there

were 163 injuries reported. nearly 80% were to flight attendants. the best way to protect yourself and avoid injury is to wear your seatbelt. kris van cleave, cbs news, reagan national airport, virginia. now to the campaign trail and former president trump trying to backtrack after coming under fire for two hot-button issues. the first -- birth control regulations. >> do you support any restrictions on a person's right to contraception? >> we're looking at that, and i'm going to have a policy on that very shortly. and i think it's something that you'll find interesting. >> the former president made those commts during an interview with cbs pittsburgh political editor jon delano. but then as the backlash followed, trump posted on social media that he would never advocate imposing restrictions on birth control. that comes after a video posted to trump's social media account includes references to a unified

reich, a term largely associated with nazi germany. while trump is trying to distance himself from the video, president biden did not mince words. the story from skyler henry. >> reporter: a 30-second video posted to former president trump's account on his social media network is drawing criticism from democrats including president biden. the video which appeared on the site on monday includes references to a, quote, unified reich among other hypothetical news headlines if trump wins the white house in november. >> what happens after donald trump wins? >> reporter: president biden released this campaign video response -- >> a unified reich? that's hitler's language. that's not america's. he cares about holding onto power. >> reporter: the video was deleted from the site by tuesday morning. while some headlines are apparently world war i references, the word "reich" is usually associated with nazi germany's third reich. >> this is appalling from the former president.

we've got to tell him who we are. >> reporter: the gop response has been muted. >> do you have any reaction to the video that was posted by the trump campaign earlier? >> i'd have to see that before i comment on that. >> reporter: it comes as trump has used inflammatory rhetoric several times in recent months. of immigrants he said this -- >> they're poisoning the blood of our country. that's what they've done. >> reporter: at the same time, trump, the presumptive republican presidential nominee, has tried to paint president biden as soft on anti-semitism. the trump campaign blamed a quote junior staffer for sharing the material which was first published elsewhere. skyler henry, cbs news, washington. as for trump's so-called hush-money trial his defense rested yesterday. closing arguments are set for tuesday, and we're learning new details about the former president's classified documents probe. newly unsealed records reveal four additional documents with classified markings were recovered from trump's florida

bedroom months after the fbi searched his mar-a-lago resort. the revelation is part of a 2023 opinion from a u.s. district judge who found prosecutors presented sufficient evidence that trump knowingly mishandled classified documents. trump has pleaded not guilty. two key players in the georgia election interference case against former president trump win their respective primaries. fulton county district attorney fani willis defeated progressive attorney christian wise smith in tuesday's democratic primary and is now set to face off against republican courtney kramer in the fall. meanwhile, fulton county superior court judge scott mcafee, who was randomly assigned to preside over the election interference case, also fended off a challenger to keep his seat. coming up, a new lawsuit against sean "diddy" combs. the disturbing allegations from a former model. and getting lit. a scorching dispute between street performers in mexico. “the darkness of bipolar depression made me feel like

a fiery brawl was captured on the streets of mexico this week. security video shows a group of mariachi members getting into a brawl with another street performer who happened to be a flame swallower. the musicians were spotted kicking and punching him to the ground before fleeing the scene. it's not clear what caused the clash or if anyone was seriously injured. new details in last year's mass shooting in maine, and rudy giuliani's arraignment. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the arizona republic" reports rudy giuliani, who dialed in late for his arraignment, says that he was not hiding from prosecutors in the fake electors case. donald trump's attorney called into tuesday's hearing and apologized for being late saying that he had got the time wrong. he entered a not guilty plea, requested a copy of the indictment, and said that he did not yet have a lawyer. arizona authorities tried unsuccessfully over several weeks to serve giuliani notice

of the indictment against him. giuliani and 17 others are accused of conspiracy and fraud in connection with the plan to keep trump in the white house despite losing the 2020 election. the "associated press" obtained a report stating utter chaos broke out during the search for a maine gunman. the independent report looked into the response of a mass shooting last october at a bar in maine in which 18 people were killed. one group of deputies apparently arrived on scene dressed in civilian clothes, while another group had allegedly been drinking and nearly crashed their armored vehicle. the local sheriff says an internal investigation had cleared officers and no one was determined to be intoxicated at the scene. and "the advocate" reports louisiana lawmakers have advanced a bill classifying abortion pills as controlled dangerous substances. the legislation to criminalize possession of mifepristone and misoprostol

the launch had been set for saturday. no new date has been announced. another woman has come forward accusing sean "diddy" combs of sexual assault. former model crystal mckinney filed a lawsuit yesterday accusing the music mogul of sexually assaulting her in 2003 at his new york city recording studio. the lawsuit comes after security video recently emerged showing combs attacking his then-girlfriend. he's apologized. no word on the new lawsuit. and authorities have opened an investigation into last october's death of actor matthew perry. investigators want to know how the actor received the supply of the drug ketamine that killed him. perry's autopsy found the amount of ketamine in his blood was in the range used for general anesthesia during surgery. ketamine was listed as the primary cause of death. and caitlin clark just did something no other athlete has done since michael jordan. the wnba rookie signed a multiyear deal with wilson
