the city's former top cop laurent armstrong announces that he is now running for city council. thanks for joining us this afternoon. i'm ann makovec and farai in armstrong's latest bid for a position in city government comes at a time that he is also suing oakland and the mayor. armstrong is vowing to crack down on crime and tackled the city's homelessness crisis, among other issues, the oakland native officially filed for candidacy at the clerk's office morning. he is running for the at large >seat. >>differently. currently >held >>by vice mayor rebecca kaplan. armstrong >said >>period will help serve >the public. something that i've been thinking about for several months really have been listening to the community who has really been asking me to step up in this moment. and i think it's important that you know as our city. experiences obviously dramatic increases in violence budget issues homeless issues, i think it's important. that i bring my leadership. to the >anne>table. little history here. armstrong served more

than 2 decades with the oakland police department and became police chief in 2021. he was fired by mayor sheng thao last year following a report that found armstrong head allegedly mishandled to police misconduct cases are bit later cleared him of wrongdoing. armstrong has filed a lawsuit against the city and the mayor for wrongful termination. >i don't believe that the lawsuit complicates my campaign. i believe when somebody is wrong, they should work to vindicate themselves and hold people accountable for >anne>that. armstrong is joining a crowded field for that seat. there are 8 other candidates who have already filed to run for the council member seat in the november election. also in oakland, the city announcing that it will sell its share of the coliseum. to the african american sports and entertainment group, the price tag at least $105 0. the move ends decade. gates of city ownership and aims to bolster oakland's finances as the city works to close the a budget deficit of 176. 0. 0. to san

francisco now where authorities are investigating a mysterious fire that gutted the home of a dog, walker terry williams, well known by the community in alamo square, he says he had been targeted by racist threats in the past. but as williams was sharing his story with city leaders yesterday, this fire broke out at his home on grove street while his parents >were home. >anne>firefighters had to rush in and rescue them. his mom was seriously >hurt. >>in >>the hospital morning, >anne>williams, dad treated and is expected to be >okay >>as lauren toms reports williams and his neighbors have a lot of questions they want >answered. thought a lot of my dad. was like you're not caring about it. that's all i married about is >anne>williams's worst fear became a reality. tuesday when a fire ripped through his family's home on grove street where they have lived for over 50 years.

>everything that's lost everything like you know, everything. i want memories, everything like as a little kid for playing up and down the house jumping off the wall stuff. it's going like it's just it's burned away. >anne>made it out alive. a miracle, he says. including his 3 dogs. but mystery surrounds the cause of the fire. after a string of racist threats targeting terry remain unsolved >city heart i think there's something in this happened. every time leaving like something's going on, like i feel like i need to stay here and protect my house 24 hours now, >anne>like even so he won't speculate as to how the fire could have started. earlier this month community members rallied together and launched a gofundme for terri to install cameras in his home after a noose and a black doll were left in front of his door. the cameras were installed, but the batteries were charging while the fire erupted. during that time, terry was at city hall meeting with city officials about the prior hate crimes. authorities have not yet identified as suspect.

myself. can't take no more of this stuff. more than just to the. just too much now, like my family is really online. it's like, come on, like >anne>left with more questions than answers as he picks up the ashes of the life he's lived. so get this. the board of supervisors adopted a resolution condemning racist threats and intimidation of the williams family. that was already on the agenda before yesterday's fire broke out. in the the east bay, a chp led strength sting. led to the recovery of more than 700 stolen cars. that is, according to the governor's office. the chp also made 355 arrests and seized 46 firearms linked to car jackings and other crimes. it's part of the governor's plan to improve public safety in the east bay in the south bay san jose police are honoring their fallen officers. a memorial >and >>flat ceremony was held this morning by the san jose police department. remembering their 13. officers who have died in

a nightmare >flight >>1 person removed from the singapore airlines plane on a stretcher. others left bloodied and bruised. following what passengers described as a sudden drop midair, >huge landmines. things were coming through the ceiling more water everywhere. george crying, >anne>joshua was 1 of more than 200 on board flight 321. about 10 hours in on the trip from london to singapore. the plane encountered storms near thailand. preliminary flight data shows. that's when the flight experienced a sudden, turbulent event. lasting about 1 >minute. shaking and at that like i just know that ok, one's gonna like huddle in, but like you kept getting worse and worse and worse. >anne>passengers who were not wearing seatbelts flung into the ceiling. a 73 year old man from britain died of a possible heart attack dozens of others injured, including at least 1 >american. it was quite scary, but i don't think will

be flying again for awhile. extremely rare to have internal insolvent result in fatalities. >anne>former ntsb chair robert sumwalt says it's too early to know exactly what happened. the ceo of singapore airlines has issued an apology. >we are very sorry for the traumatic experience. everyone onboard sq 3 to 1. went through. >anne>he says the airline will fully cooperate in investigations. in northern california. a young girl is recovering from severe injuries after an encounter with the deer and what is being called a freak accident happened at an elementary school in place, orville 10 year old nilla armstrong suffered a fractured skull. she was kicked in the eye. >yeah. guess 1 of the kids was played teasing with it and kicked it. and so when the deer got kicked it just bolted. >anne>here. ran into mila and another student. school district put out a statement saying they're now checking school grounds. every morning for wild animals. a new study

at ucsf hopes to tackle the disparity of cancer research amongst asian americans. the national cancer institute awarding ucsf $12 0 to lead the 1st long term study of cancer among asian americans. it comes as they have become the 1st racial group for whom cancer is the leading cause of death. researchers will look into the increasing rates of breast cancer among young asian american women and why non smoking asian american women have high rates of lung cancer. in san francisco chinatown, turning tragedy into a push for change, susan lou lost her mom to a botched plastic surgery. almost 30 years ago. we are highlighting her new memoir about how her mother's story helped spark change for future victims of medical malpractice. >yeah. come to this building so many times looking for answers. part of me feels yeah. i found that answer and now i can let it go seeking the truth

was how i would avenge my mother's death. >anne>the remarkable fight for justice and healing. you can watch that story coming up today at 5 p.m., and you can watch our hour long special roots and resilience. ap ice. celebration coming up this friday at 4 p.m. on kpi x. and streaming on cbs news bay area. all right, let's turn to our 1st alert weather. another gorgeous day around the bay area as we take a live look out at san francisco. it's take a look ahead at our weekends with meteorologist jessica burch >never too blue skies above us here in the bay area today with some gusty conditions along the coast. that's some of our biggest weather headlines. but here's the others heading into our memorial day weekend forecast. we're going to start cooling down and we see some cloudier skies right around the corner. here is what's happening as we head into the next couple of days. low pressure moves in from the north, and that cooled us off a lot with cloudy skies anywhere from our coast all the way into our inland areas just in time for memorial day, but other than that, as we take it a step back, we also have some gusty conditions to along our coast

right now heading into this afternoon, we could see wind gusts. anywhere up to around 40 miles per mph near bodega bay, about 30 mile per hour winds near half moon bay. it gets a little bit stronger in our inland areas more late. we go into the evening. but other than that, it is a mild forecast for us today. yes, we were in the 70s in san francisco today. we're in the upper 60s. here's that cool down. i'm talking about a it's more noticeable, especially as we head into our weekend forecast this afternoon. we have 70s all the way up in the north bay 50s along the coast. let's zoom in and take a look all the way over into antioch and livermore 70s today, 70s all the way down into the santa clara valley anywhere from san jose stretching over in a los cotto's now let's take a look at the next 7 days. there's some changes in the forecast for us. the site. the fact that we're also dealing with those cooler conditions, almost almost feels like it should be raining because these areas are low pressure usually do bring in rain, but that's not the case. it's going to tease us with some clouds as we head into saturday and sunday, we do drop down to the 60s, which is a big contract, but luckily we average out into the 70s and early next week. that's just in our inland areas, though, if

to be a supporter. spouse. well, there's 1 couple that got this same. degree. together. while married. and had a kid. before. they grab. today. they get to celebrate. entering guns and dave cell. have already walk. down the aisle together. and on wednesday they will take some more. special state. together on stage. as graduate. of the class of 20. >we told ourselves that no matter what we're going to finish and that's what we did >anne>receive there masters in counselor education. from san jose, stay university. the 1st in their families, too. get a grass. >degree. it was incredible to have apart. partner. that can relate. to the same time. topics. we were were talking about. out. the same class. have the same classmates. similar projects. >anne>plans to focus on at risk youth. who may be around gangs growing up. while fernando wants to add low income 1st generation students. but well before they can put their new

degrees to work. they have already change. plenty. of diaper. for their >daughter. village and that's some that i don't think. you know. until you actually have a base. and then you're like, wait. it really does. >anne>take a village. was born in there. final semester of the program, and it's just 10 weeks. old. she shows. up on but these 2 made sure to attend. class on zoom. by the following tuesday. there were many advantage. to having. a partner who is also your classes. but some days it did. add just a little. too much. stress. too being >a student. going too slow. and i'm going to beat the deadline. already started that assignment. man behind i haven't even looked at the problem. >anne>support from their peers. and family. made the last stretch. journey past. so they could get to go. >day. can pursue your masters. and yeah. education. example of we can do it. you can do >anne>it. united. in a common goal, and now bonded. by a shared you education to do the important work of helping us.
