hurt. and death and destruction here at home. another night of powerful and dangerous storms roar across the nation's south and midsection as communities start to pick up the pieces after tornadoes level entire neighborhoods. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. breaking overnight, a horrifying scene at a campaign rally in mexico as a stage comes crashing down. [ screams ] at least nine people were killed including a child. more than 60 others were hurt. it happened in the northern mexico state of nuevo leon. people on stage including a long-shot presidential candidate were seen running to the back to avoid the falling structure. he was not hurt. mexico's president said a gust of wind is to blame. back here in the u.s., another harrowing night for

millions of americans in the path of these destructive storms. this video from belton, texas, last night shows the damage left behind. trees and power lines down, debris covering the roads. as for the devastation in iowa, authorities have now confirmed at least five were killed and 35 others hurt, and the president will go to see the damage firsthand. naomi ruchim is joining us with the latest on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. sadly emergency crews on the ground believe the number of injured will only grow as they learn of other damage across the region. in greenfield, much of the town was flattened with homes, buildings, and even a local hospital either damaged or destroyed. powerful storms pummelled central texas wednesday. wind and rain whipped inside the temple mall after part of the roof blew off. in nearby belton, a drive down one highway showed a path of

destruction with debris in the road and toppled signs and trees in the distance. strong winds, heavy rain, and hail also battered arkansas and oklahoma. >> this one front and back glass broke on this car. >> reporter: the hail smashed through windows and dented multiple cars at this oklahoma dealership. >> hail cell here in sapulpa. come on by. >> reporter: meanwhile, new drone video shows the extent of the devastation after a deadly tornado tore through greenfield, iowa, tuesday. one of more than a dozen that reportedly hit the state. >> i thought the whole house was going to come down on us. that's how bad it sounded. >> reporter: luckily the house did not come down on 19-year-old keely pickrell who told cbs news she and her 17-year-old sister kaya hid in the basement with their dogs while the twister blasted through their neighborhood. like many residents, they're now hoping to to rebuild. >> everyone's trying to do what they can to help out.

>> reporter: iowa state officials say at least five people were killed in tuesday's storms. at least 35 were injured. iowa governor kim reynolds visited greenfield yesterday. she's issued a disaster declaration for several counties there and says she is working with the white house on a federal disaster declaration which would help the state get faster access to the resources folks need. anne-marie? >> let's hope they get that. naomi ruchim in new york. thank you. nearly two years after the uvalde school massacre the families of the 19 victims have settled one lawsuit against the city for $2 million. they're filing another against the school district and 92 state police officers who waited more than an hour to confront the gunman. the story from cbs' lilia luciano. >> reporter: still in search of answers and accountability, nearly two years to the day the families of slain and some surviving victims filed a $500

million federal lawsuit calling the response the greatest law enforcement failure in confronting an active shooter in american history. >> the time has come to do the right thing. >> reporter: the lawsuit names 92 individual officers from the texas department of public safety. the agency with the largest presence at robb elementary as the killer was left inside the two classrooms shooting multiple times for more than an hour. >> 376 officers doing their job and unable to protect these children for 77 minutes. >> reporter: in a city torn apart by rage, grief, and political polarization since may, 2022, families have reached a $2 million settlement with the city which included enhanced police training and a new fitness for duty standard among other community resources. anybody hearing $2 million would conclude that can't be satisfactory settlement in this case. >> yes, right. >> reporter: why? >> you do not want to go after your city that you know and love and potentially even jeopardize

them financially and put them into bankruptcy. >> reporter: 10-year-old victim lexi rubio's mom kimberly says the second year is increasingly difficult. >> i think the first year you're in shock and numb. year two comes around, it's just -- it's been a long time since we've seen her, held her, heard her. >> reporter: why was it important to reach the settlement? >> this isn't justice, but it's the city's step toward promoting healing in our community. this is lexi's community. this is my community. >> reporter: in addition to the $2 million settlement which is coming from the city's insurance, the city of uvalde has also agreed to make a permanent memorial which could possibly be made in this very town hall where so many of the memorials since that day have come up and down and also to make an annual day of remembrance on may 24th which will be this friday.

lilia luciano, cbs news, uvalde, texas. 229 days, that's how long more than 100 men, women, and children have been held hostage by hamas, and the talks to free them remain at a standstill. with the hostages' families protesting outside the israeli war cabinet is said to have approved new guidelines to revive the negotiations last night. that meeting came after the families of five female idf soldiers released video showing their abduction n october 7th. we have a warning, the images are disturbing. they show the women bound, some bloodied before they were forced into a vehicle at gunpoint. the families hope the video would pressure israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu to secure their release, but as cbs' imtiaz tyab tells us, that's not the only appreciate -- the only pressure netanyahu is feeling. [ speaking in a global language ] >> reporter: prime minister benjamin netanyahu responded with fury calling it a reward for terrorism. but the leaders of norway,

spain, and ireland insist the move to recognize a palestinian state was in support of peace. >> because we believe that permanent peace can only be secured upon the basis of the free will of a free people. >> reporter: regional analysts say the move by the european nations, which is largely symbolic, may be a sign the u.s.' decades' long dominance over the so-called peace process is starting to wane. the last time direct talks were held between the israelis and palestinians was during the obama administration, and that collapsed in a matter of months. the three european leaders said their recognition of palestine was also part of efforts to pressure israel to end the fighting in gaza. and the pressure is only mounting tonight after the families of five israeli women released graphic images of their abduction from the nir kibbutz, urging prime minister benjamin netanyahu to make a deal with

hamas to secure their release. orly gilboa is the mothers of -- mother of 19-year-old daniela. >> i just want everyone to do whatever they can to bring her home. >> reporter: in gaza, the fighting rages on. a cbs news team was at the al aqsa hospital in deir al bala after an israeli air strike killed at least 12. between a potential arrest warrant for alleged war crimes, the unilateral recognition of a palestinian state by european powers, and anguished pleas from hostage families at home, netanyahu is facing pressure from all sides as he desperately tries to cling onto power. imtiaz tyab, cbs news, east jerusalem. new questions surrounding supreme court justice samuel alito after a second controversial flag was hanging outside one of his homes. another symbol used by rioters, was seen at alito's virginia home less than two weeks after the capitol attack. dozens of democratic lawmakers are calling on the justice to recuse himself from january 6th-related cases. and nikki haley has made clear who she will vote for in the general election. >> i will be voting for trump. having said that, i stand by what i said in my suspension speech. trump would be smart to reach out to the millions of people who voted for me and continue to support me and not assume that they're just going to be with him. and i genuinely hope he does that. >> haley, trump's former rival in the republican presidential race and his onetime critic, said that she will support a president who has, quote, the backs of our allies and who would secure the border. this was her first public appearance since dropping out of the presidential race in march.

before taking off in a car. the suspect was soon captured in a traffic stop. no word on the motive. "the detroit news" reports a michigan farm worker has been diagnosed with bird flu, becoming the second u.s. case tied to dairy cows. health officials say the patient had been in contact with cows presumed to be infected. the person experienced mild eye symptoms and has recovered. a texas farm worker got infected in march and has also recovered. health officials say the risk to the public remains low. and the "associated press" reports the new york state senate passed a bill to allow evidence of prior sexual offenses to be heard in sex crimes cases. this comes on the heels of the state's high court overturning harvey weinstein's rape conviction. the court found a trial judge unfairly allowed women to testify about assault allegations that were not part of the case against him. the proposed bill now moves to the state assembly for approval. and still to come, every

>> reporter: the u.s. stock market tumbled wednesday after minutes from the federal reserve's laeeealed various officials were willing to hike rates if necessary. the dow lost 201 points. the nasdaq was down 31, and the s&p 500 lost 14 points. the parent company of ticketmaster may soon be in trouble with the u.s. government. cbs news has confirmed the justice department is ready to file an antitrust lawsuit against live nation as early as today. the suit is allegedly tied to the company's dominance in the concert ticket market and could seek to force a change in how the company does business. new rules for companies that let you buy now and pay later. the consumer financial protection bureau will now require those companies to give consumers the same legal rights and protections as credit card lenders. that includes the right to demand a refund and to dispute transactions.
