good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. tens of millions of americans will be on the move this weekend. the unofficial kickoff of summer, but severe storms including tornadoes and hail could devastate parts of the country. overnight a tornado struck southwest oklahoma damaging homes, overturning farm equipment, and downing power lines. the central texas city of temple is cleaning up after a tornado and straight-line winds swept through wednesday. the city estimates more than 500 homes and businesses were destroyed or badly damaged. >> i call my daughter, and i tell her, "i'm going to die." >> there's two by fours and two by sixes sticking out of my building, half of it's gone. it moved my -- so many thousand pound oven from one side of the store to the other. >> in iowa the tornado that decimated greenfield tuesday was upgraded to an ef4 with peak winds up to 185 miles per hour.

four people were killed, and dozens hurt. powerful storms will push across the midwest this afternoon bringing damaging winds, hail, and isolated tornadoes stretching from the st. louis area to chicago. in the afternoon storms will flare up in the tlorth dallas-fort worth area and move through arkansas. saturday afternoon the storm threats will be the highest in kansas, oklahoma, and missouri. and sunday the severe weather risk heads east with the nastiest storms most likely from missouri to kentucky. and now to presidential politics. while president biden was hosting kenya's president with one of the largest state dinners at the white house, former president donald trump was holding court in the south bronx trying to woo his hometown with something that hasn't been done in 44 years. ronald reagan was the last republican presidential candidate to hold a campaign event in the south bronx when he ran against jimmy carter in 1980. cbs news' astrid martinez joins

us with the latest in new york. >> reporter: good morning. former president donald trump held a campaign rally in new york city in the democratic stronghold where he is widely unpopular. he recited some of his most familiar talking points. for the past eight weeks trump has spent much of his time on the opposite side of the city fighting the hush-money prosecution in the manhattan supreme court. >> together we are going to make new york city great again. >> reporter: former president donald trump took the campaign stage in the bronx, an area that voted overwhelmingly blue four years ago. >> the simple fact is joe biden is not getting the job done for the bronx. he's not getting the job done for new york. >> reporter: the native new yorker is also trying to woo black and hispanic voters away from the democratic party. >> i think that we should listen to both sides of the argument and then make informed decisions in the best interests of black people. >> reporter: president biden spent yesterday hosting kenya's

president, the first african leader to have a state visit in 16 years. in a new political ad, his campaign paints trump's past dealings with black americans as adversarial. >> he was sued for accusing to rent his apartments to black families and called for the execution of five innocent black and brown teenagers. >> reporter: the trump campaign denounced the ad as a, quote, cheap attempt by the biden campaign to gaslight black voters. the biden-harris campaign is trying to lure supporters of former u.n. ambassador nikki haley after she announced this week that she will vote for trump. >> i'm happy that governor haley decided to come around and unite party. >> reporter: as trump's so-called hush-money trial is set to come to a close next week, a new cbs news poll shows that more than half of americans believe trump is definitely or probably guilty. trump denies all wrongdoing. now in an interview with a local new york news outlet last night, trump said he thinks nikki haley will join his team in some way.

trump also discussed possible vice presidential picks, throwing out names such as ben carson, ohio senator j.d. vance, and new york congresswoman elise stefanik. anne-marie? >> astrid martinez in new york. thank you. while the chancellor of ucla was testifying in front of congress, pro-palestinian protesters set up a new encampment. some demonstrators even climbed up the roof of a building to hang a banner as police moved in to clear it out. some clashes broke out. in washington, republican lawmakers put the chancellor along with the presidents of rutgers and northwestern on the hot seat for allegedly not doing enough to combat the rise in anti-semitism. natalie brand reports from capitol hill. >> reporter: the wave of pro-palestinian demonstrations that spread across college campuses nationwide took center stage on capitol hill thursday. >> the goal is to engage with students to the extent possible. >> reporter: house republicans pressed northwestern university president michael schill about jewish students' claims that encampment protesters harassed

them. >> i'm asking the question, you're required to answer. isn't it true that a jewish northwestern student was assaulted? >> we are investigating those allegations. >> reporter: committee chair republican virginia foxx criticized schill as well as rutgers president jonathan holloway for negotiating with students to disband the encampments. >> you should be doubly ashamed for capitulating to the anti-semitic rule breakers. >> the battle against anti-semitism, against bigotry in all of its forms must be waged with education. >> reporter: democrats on the committee defended students' rights to peacefully protest and questioned campus crackdowns involving law enforcement. at ucla, chancellor gene block enlisted the police to help disband encampments. it resulted in more than 200 arrests. >> in encampment was against polici. >> you should be ashamed for letting a peaceful protest gathering get hijacked by an angry mob. >> reporter: among demonstrators' core demands that schools divest from companies

that do business with israel. >> i would never recommend to the board of trustees divestment. >> reporter: ezra pfeffer who just graduated from rutgers attended the hearing and said he wants to see more from his university's leadership. >> comply with their own code of conduct, you know. they make it clear they don't tolerate anti-semitism. let's see it. >> reporter: students say they want an action plan in place before they return in the fall. natalie brand, cbs news, capitol hill. louisville police released new video of the incident involving the top golfer in the world's masters championship, scottie scheffler. scheffler was driving to a tournament last week when he allegedly refused to comply with an officer's orders. bradley blackburn has details, plus why the officer is now facing disciplinary action. >> reporter: the newly released video from two cameras shows scottie scheffler's vehicle turning near the scene and coming to a stop. moments later scheffler gets out of the vehicle and is handcuffed and arrested. >> guys? guys? >> reporter: an espn reporter

capturing it on his cellphone. the criminal complaint said scheffler refused to comply and accelerated forward dragging a detective to the ground. but that detective did not have a police body camera turned on, and louisville's police chief says he was disciplined for violating department policy. >> detective gillis should have turned on his body-worn camera but did not. >> reporter: there are lingering questions about the incident and the four charges scheffler faces including felony second-degree assault of an officer. >> we have to respect the legal process, and that's what we are going to do. and we're going to let that play out. >> reporter: in a news conference hours after the incident, scheffler said it was all a misunderstanding. >> it was chaotic and, you know, i said i'm sorry, i'm trying to get to my tee time. outside of that, it was then it just -- things escalated from there. >> reporter: on thursday, his attorney said he has reviewed the new footage and scheffler will fight the charges. >> he didn't do anything wrong. we will go to trial, or the case

[pilot] prepare for non-stop smiles. crest. expect an aggressive hurricane season. the national oceanic and atmospheric administration released its 2024 forecast, and it predicts up to 13 hurricanes and at least seven major hurricanes of category three or higher. the increased activity is due in part to near record warm ocean temperatures. now the hurricane season officially starts june 1st. a woman opens up about her abuse at the hands of jeffrey epstein, and a louisiana bill on abortion pills advances. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand."

the "associated press" reports louisiana's legislature has approved a bill classifying abortion pills as controlled dangerous substances. the state senate yesterday voted to send a bill to the governor's desk making it the only u.s. state to impose criminal fines on the possession of two abortion medications without a prescription. louisiana's governor has previously expressed support for the legislation. the action comes despite widespread criticism from doctors. "the post and courier" says the supreme court upheld congresswoman nancy mace's congressional district that exiled 30,000 black voters. in a 6-3 decision, the court's conservative majority ruled republicans in south carolina did not unlawfully consider race when they drew a congressional district in a way that removed thousands of black voters. the action rejects a lower court ruling saying the district did discriminate against black voters. critics say the decision makes it harder to bring claims of racial gerrymandering.

being honored ahead of the memorial day holiday. nearly 1,600 military personnel yesterday placed small flags near the 260,000 headstones at arlington national cemetery outside of washington, d.c. the flags will remain through memorial day. big changes are coming to college sports, and ticketmaster is facing the music. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: all three major indexes closed in the red thursday with the dow marking its worst day of the year. that index lost 605 points. the nasdaq was down 65, and the s&p 500 lost 39 points. in a federal lawsuit filed thursday, the justice department is accusing ticketmaster and its parent company live nation of monopolizing the concert industry. federal officials and dozens of state attorneys general allege live nation illegally crushes competition and is seeking structural changes which could

include breaking apart the two entities. the doj began investigating the company in 2022 following public outcry over the mishandling of ticket sales for taylor swift's "the eras tour." live nation says the lawsuit won't reduce ticket prices or service fees. the artists and teams set prices. a major shakeup in college sports. the ncaa has struck a $2.8 billion deal with the five biggest conferences that could allow universities to pay their athletes to play. if approved by a judge, major college competitors would no longer be considered amateur, and those athletes could start making money as soon as the fall of 2025. and southwest airlines will now appear on google flight search. the dallas-based carrier had previously omitted its fares from many third parties, preferring customers to find tickets largely through its own website. now travelers can more easily

forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ i wasn't ready to say anything before, but i'm ready now. ♪ >> celine dion is opening up about her struggles after being diagnosed with stiff person syndrome. the singer shares an intimate look into her life in her documentary titled "i am celine dion". the movie premieres on primetime video next month. sean "diddy" combs has been hit with yet another lawsuit. the seventh in six months. in court documents obtained by cbs news, april lampros says combs sexually assaulted her four times between 1995 and the early 2000s. she says she met the hip-hop mogul when she was a college student, and the relationship turned aggressive and coercive.

so far no comments from combs. meanwhile, combs' ex-girlfriend seen in that disturbing hotel video being attacked is breaking her silence. cassie ventura shared a message on instagram thanking everyone for their support. ventura wrote, "domestic violence is the issue. it broke me down to someone i never thought i would become. with a lot of hard work, i am better today, but i will always be recovering from my past." combs apologized calling his behavior, quote, inexcusable, and said that he was going through a difficult time in his life. rapper sean kingston has been arrested on fraud and theft charges. the 34-year-old was taken into custody during a concert on a california army base yesterday. while 3,000 miles away a s.w.a.t. team raided his mansion. his mother also arrested. kingston is being sued by a company claiming he failed to pay for thousands of dollars of tech equipment. tennessee's attorney general is investigating the company that tried to auction elvis
