flights this memorial day weekend. and carnaval kickoff. we'll show you the festivities and what you need to know about this weekend's parade. thanks for joining u i'm brian hackney. >> and i'm andrea nakano. memorial day weekend travel is already breaking records. taking a live look at bay area airports, the tsa says they screened a single day high of nearly 3 million airline passengers nationwide yesterday. >> flight aware tracked more than 8,000 u.s. flights yesterday. they were delayed, and the faa said the nation's air travel system is short 3,000 air traffic controllers. 271 million passengers will travel by air this summer. that's up more than 6% from last year. >> we do have alternate strategies in the event that they do have a day or two where they don't have proper staffing. then we can mitigate that. >> monday is expected to be the busiest travel day of the weekend. and taking a live look at the roadways. a lot of people drive to their holiday get away

this weekend. aaa says 44 million folks will head 50 miles or more from their home. and for more on the weather this memorial day weekend, we toss it over to darren peck. >> we got a bit of a cool down in time for the holiday weekend where the temperatures dropped like 15 degrees. you probably noticed that yesterday. it was very gray to start the day today, but look what happened into the late morning and afternoon. marine layer pretty much melted back to the coast, which is where it is for now. satellite imagery shows how quickly it eroded. now we're looking at sunshine. and that's the way it will go for the rest of the holiday weekend. little marine layer in the morning, and then temperatures will really skyrocket and see more sunshine and temperatures that jump to near 80. by tomorrow, look at the inland forecast. we don't change in the immediate bay, but it's sunny and 80 for sunday and monday. and there's the forecast for carnaval. i'll go into more detail on this,

though. how does the marine layer and wind play into the parade tomorrow? for now back to you. neighbors and business owners in one oakland neighborhood a growing homeless encampment is creating safety concerns. it's an east 8th street between fruitvale avenue and 34th avenue. they say the sidewalk is blocked off and there was recently a troubling incident involving an ax. da lin reports. >> reporter: neighboring say they can no longer use the sidewalk on east 8th street. a car was parked on the sidewalk. there's also a bike and a bunch of other stuff. they walk into the street to get in and out of their homes. >> the kids who are walking to school have to get off the sidewalk because they can't go through. it's the only sidewalk since there isn't one on the other side. >> reporter: through a translator, hector ugo worries a car could hit his two little girls. neighbors and business owners say it started out with

one rv a few months ago, but got bigger. a second rv and a couple of cars have since camped out on east 8th street. they worry it could turn into east 9th street, which is filled with rvs and people living in cars. >> and walking through there, it's a death trap. it's anything can happen there. and when it starts going dark, forget about it. there's no light there. it makes it even more dangerous. >> reporter: neighbors say this is the other route. families don't want to walk into the street, but the alleyway is full of trash. this business owner says on thursday someone vandalized a stolen or abandoned car on the street. surveillance footage also showed a person using a rock to break the driver's side window. a short time later, everado says a homeless man walked out with what appeared to be an ax in his right hand to try and confront

someone. >> i'm beyond frustrated, beyond disappointed, i'm beyond angry. >> reporter: they worry about their safety. they say they called the city, but no one has cleared the encampment. >> it goes beyond atrocious. it's deliberate. a councilman met with everado about the concerns. he says they're working to clear the rvs on both east 8th and 9th streets. >> they have to go. they're from missouri, canada, all over the country coming into oakland because we allow that behavior to happen. they shouldn't be on that street. they should not be because it's illegal to block the sidewalk. >> reporter: businesses and neighbors hope the city will act fast. >> this cannot continue. because it puts our life in jeopardy. other stories this weekend in oakland, the former police chief is running for city council. laron armstrong launched his campaign today. he was the chief for two years before the mayor removed him from the position in the middle

of a cover up scandal. an independent arbitrator ruled armstrong shouldn't have been fired. armstrong says he's the only candidate that understands how to handle city resources. in the north bay, novato police set up a dui check point last night arresting 33 people. i'm sorry, they arrested 3 people and 38 citations were issued for license issues. the chp kicked off a maximum enforcement period over the holiday weekend throughout the state. and a building fire in san francisco displaced two tourists. it broke out around 9:00 this morning. it happened at a two-story accessory unit on carl street just a block from the stadium. the fire department said there were no injuries. san francisco's carnaval officially kicked off today, and the festival showcases latin

american and caribbean cultures through music and dance. this is one of the many performances you can see in the mission district this weekend. there are rows of vendors selling artwork, clothing, and food, and tomorrow is the carnaval grand parade. and here's a look at pade route you're planning to attend. it starts on bryant and 24th street then heads down to mission street and moves to 15th street. it ends on harrison street. meanwhile harrison from 16th to 24th is closed until monday morning, as well as treat avenue from 16th to 22nd. if you can't make it out to carnaval this year, we have you covered. our special coverage starts sunday at 10:00 on pix+ and streaming live on cbs news bay area. and still ahead here at 5:00, how oakland community members are using music and dance to bring more people out to lake merit this summer. and the biggest party in wine country continues today. and why today is an extra

today kicks off oakland's love our lake campaign by lake merit. a series of summer events with live music, performances, and volunteer activities

dedicated to celebrating local oakland culture. ♪ [ music ] ♪ >> today residents got the chance to see a number of local artists of all genres perform lake side and enjoy the sunny weather. the park will host several free events throughout the summer, including next month's lake fest. an earth-like planet has just been discovered and could be inhabitable, at least in theory. let's go. but there's a catch. it's about 40 light years away. the location in the pisces constellation, which isn't very precise. the size is roughly between the size of earth and venus, and since we're both the same size, let's just say it's earth-like. possibly liquid water and life as we know it could exist. the average temperature is 42 degrees celsius. that's hot. for humans to get there it would take 225,000 years if the fastest method of space travel we have

leave now. >> i'm kind of happy with this planet. >> who knows if they have italian food there. >> not giving that up! all right, so we really did a big change yesterday. >> no kidding! >> today we're living with that still. but there's a warm up coming. >> oh, good. >> you'll get a nice monday for holiday proper if you like that. there's the time lapse of today. when you take a look at how this played out, we really started out very gray today. gray enough we were getting light rain along the coast and immediate bay. then the marine layer melted out, and we're on marine layer watch now. we're watching the clouds building back in. we're looking south from the salesforce tower. dolores park sits right there. here's the mission district. we're waiting for the clouds to build back in tonight and we'll have gray skies for the morning tomorrow, anyway. here's a review on that. the marine layer this morning, going back to 9:00

a.m., had everybody under it. and this stuff was pretty thick. we were getting light mist in the east bay hills and peninsula. and throughout the remainder of the day, look how fast it momented -- melted away and disappeared. it does not come back as intensely tomorrow. but for sunday morning, we've still got some marine layer that builds back in once again. that gets us to 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. this is not a total gray out. it's not like an overdoing it of the may gray. but you do have, we're not getting mist out of that either. and it's not going to last that long. by the afternoon, it will be sunshine again for everybody. then we go into sunday night into monday, and monday morning the marine layer is back, and we're looking to fill in the immediate bay. so there's the start of memorial day proper at 7:00 a.m. but it will melt back and you'll get more sunshine than anything else for the remainder of the day. it will get windy. it's going to stay windy along the coast. watch tomorrow afternoon, classic

pattern. that's tonight. then into tomorrow afternoon, wind turns right back on again. so you have the 20 to 30 miles per hour winds throughout the city. so looking at the forecast for carnaval, it's sunny. you're in the low to mid-60s for daytime highs. but there's a wind chill factor on that. so take the numbers showing sure, by 1:00, 3:00 in the afternoon, even 11:00 a.m., you're probably going to have sunshine there. but by this period, when you hit your daytime highs, it's also a 25-mile an hour breeze there and will feel cooler. you stay sunny in the mission, but also pick up the wind coming through. that's unavoidable. here's the bottlerock forecast for tomorrow. 10 degrees warmer. low 70s there. and if you're not going to carnaval or bottlerock, this is your forecast. those are the numbers for the rest of the bay tomorrow. mid-70s on sunday in the north bay. san jose going to 76. hayward doing 70. and we'll get close to 80 inland, and eventually above 80. look at the seven-day forecast for san

francisco and oakland. oakland low to mid-70s by wednesday and thursday. north bay numbers in the low 80s by the middle of the week. mid-80s for san jose by thursday and friday, and the inland east bay will also warm to the mid 80s by thursday and friday. okay, matt over to you. thanks, darren. if you had written off the giants, think again. san francisco is on a tear sitting above 500 for the first time since march, and each and everyone in the past few days has seemingly been better than the last. jordan hicks, he was the man who pitched today. he's been an ace early on. and he was dealing. a lot of whiffs in new york. he struck out eight batters over five innings. he allowed just one run on two hits. another great start for the converted reliever. giants were trailing yet again in the eighth. wade pinch hitting. it goes to right field, scores

mckenna and sent the game into extra innings despite wade getting tagged out at second. then the giants added two runs, and then mike yastrzemski loaded the bases. they found a way to win for their eighth victory in the last ten games. party got started early at the coliseum. a ukele anthem kicked off the game. and quality start for the green and gold. gave up just two hits over six innings of one-run ball. his 388 era remains the lowest among the a's starters. that set up the offense for success with runners at the corners. cameron, hard hit bill for the rbi single. a's led 3-1 into the ninth, and you know what that means. it was miller time. coliseum crowd on its feet for one of the best closers in baseball, and he strikes out the side in the ninth to pick up his tenth save

of the season. a's win 3-1. rubber match tomorrow at the coliseum. we have some sad news to report from the golf world today. grayson murray, a two-time pga tour winner died saturday morning at the age of 30. he started the week playing in the charles schwab challenge, but withdrew on friday. the pga says murray's family asked them not to stop the tournament and continue play, and they respected the wishes. but an emotional day in fort worth. per usual scheffler was at the top of the leader board. he sits four back and in solo second. your leader is davis riley who has one pga tour win under his belt. here on the par 3 16th lands the green, then the ball kept working back towards the hole. he birdied to get to 14 under. will be interesting to see if he can hold off the world number one on sunday. we're nearing the end of the week, and we don't want you

to feel like you missed anything in the wide world of sports, so here's our top five from the last few days. starting with number 5, debo samuel putting in the off season work. back to boxing. something he's done in the past, punching away the trade rumors perhaps. 4, two outs, bases loaded in the ninth. matt chapman and lamonte wade jr. teamed up to save the day. number 3, the defensive player of the year getting his skates on as luka spun him around for the dagger in game 2 of the western conference finals. number 2, birmingham southern, a d3 baseball school, and they're headed to the college world series. but here's the thing, the school is closing on may 31st. so a school that no longer exists could perhaps win the national championship. and number 1, this is by far the most bizarre play i've seen on a diamond. a couple of ohio baseball teams here. sixth

welcome back. in chinatown, folks got the chance to celebrate asian-american and pacific islander heritage month at today's cultural festival and parade. the event featured performances from line dancers and martial artists as well as 40 booths from around chinatown. the event organizers say the festival is a chance to showcase the town's rich culture and history. >> this event is the first in chinatown to celebrate aapi heritage month to recognize and remember and to honor what chinatown have offered to america and the community. i want them to come here to visit and feel what's in their heart. >> today's event also included panel presentations on family history in chinatown and the

impact of chinese exclusion laws. the market at crane cove kicked off in san francisco after a trial run last year. the sf parks alliance brought it back for a full season. the community is enjoying pop ups, arts and crafts, and food and drinks. vendors include professional businesses in the area as well as ordinary folks going a step above a garage sale. residents are excited about the addition to crane's cove's already unique vibes. >> we love having this so close by to our home and being able to walk down here on a saturday morning and get to explore. we just got some records, so we're very happy to have that. and we love looking at all the vintage clothing and pottery. >> the market will take place each saturday of the month through october. last saturday. and still ahead, the party

my favorite, ripple. wine has increased in popularity. according to the bmo wine market report, there is such a thing, wine spending in the united states, oh my god, hit 107 billion last year. wow. that's up from 73 billion in 2018. andrea? >> great, so what better way to celebrate national wine day than going to wine country? it is day two of bottlerock, the music festival, and this is video from yesterday's event. bebe rexha was performing along with stevie nicks. it attracts music lovers and food and wine lovers as well. tonight's headliner is pearl jam. i know brian is very excited about that. and tomorrow bottlerock will close with ed sheeran, and then we'll do it all again next week, but it will be a different type of music festival. >> now, you were there yesterday?
