the more somber ceremony. plus the main branch closing its doors. when they will be able to open them again. san francisco's mission district came alive today with the carnaval festival and parade. we've been following the action all day, streaming the whole parade on pix+ and catching up with the endless groups of performers, representing quite a number of different cultures from latino, indigenous, and caribbean backgrounds. ♪ [ music ] ♪ >> this is the 45th year doing carnaval. our theme this year, the earth on fire. you can feel the heat out here. it's a beautiful day for carnaval. >> it was a beautiful day for a parade. jose martinez has the dancing, the food, and the story. >> reporter: hey, what a lot of energy. this is amazing here at

carnaval today. it is right with the lowrider. do you want to see what happens today? [ cheering ] >> reporter: it's the party everyone has been waiting for in san francisco. and of course, we, again, cruise the streets of the mission on a lowrider. >> i love this. this is what lowriderring was really meant for. we love to cruise our cars nice and slow and let people enjoy them. >> that is pedro's passion. he has been cruising these had streets as a part of their lowrider council, trying to keep this tradition alive. >> since 1974, we started low creations. as we're coming through the city, lowriding. >> reporter: you can see how the car gets excited. hundreds

of people gather to celebrate carnaval 2024 including the king and queen. >> we are all a community. it is good to see, first of all carnaval in this country because it is a good time for the family. >> reporter: during the parade we danced and talked to families including one from san mateo. >> five great energy today. a lot of people out here having a good time with family and stuff. >> reporter: they come to carnival every year to connect and share their culture with the next generations. >> the queen is from peru. so yes, definitely. it's just great vibes after covid and everything. >> reporter: it is just not about the older generation. little kids were also a big part of the parade, displaying the cultural attire and keeping traditions alive. >> it means i get to have fun and spend time with my family. >> reporter: san francisco

sacrifices made. but john ramos has got that story. >> reporter: remember the uss san francisco has become the holiday tradition in san francisco. now the family of one of their crew members has added a piece of history as well. >> reporter: the bag pipes once again led the nation's colors to the memorial for the u.s.s. san francisco. its torn bridge wings on display with holes from the shelling it took in the brutal battle. it was november 14, 1942, and a japanese armada was headed to bombard a group of marines trying to hold on to an important air base. >> in lead of the group, steamed into the middle. it was nothing other than the suicide run that they knew they had to do it in order to save the marines. and that's the story that we would remember. >> reporter: but within that, where the other stories as

well, like that of the chief officer, paul mckinley. he flew as a backseater with the scout plane on board the ship. he joined the navy in 1937, just about to get out of the service when pearl harbor was attacked. >> so he was not released out of his four year contract and had an extended tour of duty. >> reporter: mckinley's family was at the ceremony offering a book. he was on the uss san francisco when it emerged undamaged from the pearl harbor attack. then seemed to move from one major battle to another. >> they were on tear way to midway and so they reversed course. he did escape that one. so yeah. >> and you kind of saw it all? >> yeah, he was out there. >> reporter: the scout plane had been removed prior to the bloody battle that killed 103 men including e her captain and

admirable. but the plane was used afterwards to track the crippled japanese ships. most of it was never talked about until mckinley's family told him to put everything down on paper before his death in 1996. >> and i don't think the bravery and their heroism of these men and women can accurately be understood without hearing it from their own words. it changed what the people, especially the uss san francisco were able to do. that has just changed the outcome of our country. it is very important to remember what happened. >> reporter: so now a new chapter has been added to san francisco. it will be up to the generations and what will fade into the thin air.

other memorials tomorrow, the presidio on board the uss hornet, which has been converted to a museum in alameda. at danville's war memorial and at campbell city hall to name a few. former president obama surprised volunteers at alexandria national ceremony this weekend. he helped place flags, talking to the families of fallen soldiers. biden will lay a wreath and arlington national ceremony tomorrow. beau biden died from brain cancer in 2015. beau is exposed to toxic smoke from burn pits while serving in the delaware army national guard. biden's rivals for the white house, former president trump and kennedy jr. all spoke at the convention this weekend. both men were booed. neither candidate, the libertarian nomination," kennedy lost in the first round," trump did not

welcome back. the main brand for the oakland library will be closed until november. the closure starts tonight. the library says while it is closed, they will be doing floor-to-ceiling upgrades. >> mostly for us it will be us going on a sunday because no other branches are open on sunday. >> while it's closed, they will put in a new roof, upgrade the electrical system. renovate the floors and lights, and fix some heating problems. they're paying for it with a $4.2 million state grand and

the coast. we'll have more sunshine than anything else. let's look at tuesday's numbers. that's where we're going to start the story, which is sad to take hold by the end of the week. for tomorrow, these are actually monday's numbers. this is the memorial day holiday. you're back to the upper 70s if you're in the trivalley here. you're in the low to mid-60s. 60s in san francisco. when you take a look inland through concord, your numbers will be able to jump near 80 tomorrow. look at santa rosa. your numbers will also be able to jump tomorrow with plenty of sunshine with a nice warm up here. but once you do this, you'll sit here for the next three to four days where the numbers will really start to climb. let's get into our seven day and we will pull in our three different micro climate. we will start with our inland micro climate first as you can see the numbers make it

to the upper 80s. and then you will be near 80. but there's a peak on thursday and friday before the temperatures come back over the weekend. here are the numbers for the bay. you'll warm up to the mid-70s at most. that'll happen on thursday. then back down to the 60s over the weekend. for the coast, not a whole lot of change here. >> plan on rain. >> all right, darren. we've got baseball on top over here with the giants. 27 wins, 27 losses, and 5 1/2 first out of the west. would you take it? they are tasty in the middle. and today bad aftertaste.

welcome back. millions of americans hitting the skies and highways for this holiday weekend. this is what traffic looks like right now. max darrow with what you can expect before heading home tomorrow. >> reporter: memorial day travel in 2024 is busier than it was in 2023. monday is projected to be the busiest travel day of the holiday weekend. with memorial day weekend here, the start of the summer travel season is officially underway. and it is off to a busy start on the roads and in the sky. the tsa

hit a single day record to kick off the holiday weekend, screening more than 2.95 million people at airports nationwide on friday. that broke a record set last year on the sunday after thanksgiving. and at our local bay area airports, sfo expects nearly three quarters of a million passengers. san jose almost 400,000. and san francisco bay, oakland's international, over 130,000 passengers. you may have experienced the traffic at some point this holiday weekend. aaa estimates more than 43 million people will hit the roads, traveling at least 50 miles to their destinations this weekend. that's up about 4% from last year. chp out in numbers throughout the holiday weekend, cracking down on impaired driving, speeding, distracted driving, and more. last year 46 people were killed in crashes throughout california during the holiday weekend. the chp also arrested
