and tornados that left a wide trail of destruction across half the united states. and international outrage. pressure mounts on israel after a fiery deadly air strike in rafah. the prime minister is now calling a tragic accident. good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. today marks the beginning of the end of donald trump's so-called hush money trial. after more than a month of testimony, prosecutors and the defense will get to give their final arguments today before the jury decides trump's fate. cbs's astrid martinez joins us outside the courthouse in lower manhattan on what to expect today. astrid, good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. the closing arguments gives the jurors an opportunity to be reminded of stormy daniels and the alleged sexual encounter she had with former president donald

trump. they can focus on former fixer's testimony, michael cohen, and say donald trump was directly involved with those hush money payments. meanwhile they can argue cohen's words are not credible and all they have to do is show that the prosecutors failed to prove donald trump was guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. soon, the fate of former president donald trump will be in the hands of a manhattan jury following today's closing arguments. >> in the last year, i've been indicted by the government on 91 different things. >> reporter: in this case prosecutors have charged trump with 34 counts of falsifying business records, which they say was done to conceal repayment to former fixer michael coe enafter cohen paid money to adult film action stress stormy daniels, this, all in an effort to hide an alleged past sexual encounter between trump and daniels ahead of the 2016 presidential election. trump has pleaded not guilty and denies the encounter. >> this trial is a scam and a sham. >> reporter: prosecutors called 20 witnesses to the stand including daniels who gave lurid

details of her alleged encounter with donald trump. michael cohen testified that trump signed off on the payments. the defense poked at both witnesses' testimony. >> this really could go either way. the jury needs to believe michael cohen in order to convict. >> reporter: closing arguments could last all day. the judge is expected to give jury instructions as soon as tomorrow, and after that they'll begin deliberations. >> i think there's going to be some extended deliberations in this case and everyone is going to be holding their breath. >> reporter: a recent cbs news poll shows that americans are split along party lines over whether they believe trump is guilty or not guilty. now, each felony count that the former president faces carries a maximum four-year prison sentence and fines. if he were to be convicted, anne-marie, this would be a first for a former president. back to you. >> astrid martinez in lower manhattan. astrid, thank you very much.

turning to the catastrophic weather. finally most of us are getting a break today from storms that spawned dozens of tornadoes across the country over the long holiday weekend. at least 23 people were killed including two children. this was in texas, arkansas, kentucky, oklahoma, and virginia. cities and towns now left to pick up the pieces. cbs's meg oliver reports. >> reporter: shattered homes littered the landscape across valley view, texas, after saturday night's tornado killed seven people including two children in cook county. others barely surprised. >> the loudest thing i'd ever heard. i never had been through anything like that before. >> reporter: a dark terrifying scene as an ef-2 tornado with 135-mile-per-hour winds whipped through this truck stop. hugo para shouted for everyone to take shelter in the bathrooms. mangled metal is all that's left. cbs's dave malkoff spoke with para who witnesses say saved

more than 100 lives. >> i said let's go to the bathrooms. go, go, go, go. everybody listened, and everybody go to the restrooms. >> we're in it. we're in it. i can't do anything. >> cover your head. >> reporter: as that same tornado hit, best friends thought they were driving away from the storm but instead drove right into it. >> i feel for everybody else that is injured or don't have homes or clothes. >> reporter: the powerful storm moved through seven southern states, packing dangerous winds and hail in some parts. >> i would say that i'm 100% sure it's going to be delayed. >> reporter: the severe storms are now moving here in the northeast. frustration brewed as hundreds of flights canceled and delayed at major airports including boston, new york, and new jersey. >> we were trying to find any other flight for today. they said, no, nothing's going out today because of the weather. >> reporter: the airport seeing the most delays and

cannes racings included atlanta, glard ya, and here in newark with more than 100 flights delayed for more than two hours. meg oliver, cbs news, newark, new jersey. storms are not over for people across the south where 125 million people are under a severe weather risk. radar shows the storms will flare up at noon in western texas. they'll reach dallas this evening with potentially heavy hail and winds, and heavy downpours could lead to flash flooding. southern texas could get up to 3 to 5 inches of rain throughout tomorrow. following up on the air strike in rafah. growing outrage is growing. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu calling the civilian deaths saying a tragic death.

if he says for us every death hurts. the israelis have told the u.s. they believe shrapnel from the strike ignited a fuel tank, which then engulfed a refugee tent. with negotiations set to start a cease-fire and hostage deal, qatar, a key mediator, says the rafah strike could complicate talks. imtiaz tyab reports from east jeru jerusalem. >> reporter: fire raged through the makeshift encampment in what's being described as the tent massacre. the horrifying aftermath defies belief, bodies burnt beyond recognition. a man holds a child beheaded from the force of the blast. treaters were rushing to a designated safe zone for civilians.

by morning a cbs news team had made it to the western rafah neighborhood where survivors, mainly families, gathered in shock at what happened and as children dug through the scorched remains of a food distribution tent trying to salvage whatever they could with their bare hands. israel insists it targeted a hamas compound in which, quote, significant hamas terrorists were operating. but at a nearby hospital, one of the few still functioning in gaza, the vafst majority was ful of children wounded. parents in grief. they burned the people. they burned them, he says. they burned the whole neighborhood. just days ago the u.n.'s top court ordered israel to halt the attacks on rafah to protect the huge number of civilians there. but since then the israeli military has only intensified its attacks. the air strikes on the safe zone came just hours after hamas

"the boston globe" says the suspect in multiple stabbing attacks is ott of the hospital and being held without trail. 26-year-old jared ravizza was arrested saturday night after a police pursuit and crash. he's being investigated for allegedly stabbing four girls ages 9 to 17 at a movie theatre

in boston saturday night. all four suffered non-life-threatening injuries. an hour later he stabbed two employees at a mcdonald's. "usa today" says louisiana police are searching for two of now inmates who escaped through a jail fence in recreation on saturday. the two on the run, omarion hookfin and jamarcus cyprian. the other two got away. they blame the escapes in part on short staffing. nfl kicker brandon mcmanus is accused of sexual assault by two women in a new lawsuit. the women say mcmanus sexually assaulted them during a team chartered flight to london last year when they were working at flight attendants, and they're also suing his former team the jacksonville jaguars. the lawyers for the kicker says the allegations are false and an extortion attempt. still to come, an actor in hot water.
