difficult breeders, so send them here to d.c. we'll get them straightened out. >> all right. pandas and politics. that was our nancy cordes. and this is the "cbs news roundup." reporting from the cbs news broadcast center in new york city, i'm shanelle kaul. it's it's friday, may 31st, 2024. this is "cbs news mornings." historic verdict. donald trump now a convicted felon. the first former american president to have ever been found guilty of felony crimes. >> this was a rigged, disgraceful trial. >> the only voice that matters is the voice of the jury, and the jury has spoken. >> the reaction from across the country. what happens next, and the impact on the presidential race.
4:31 am
good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. former president donald trump is expected to hold a news conference at trump tower in a few hours after the stunning verdict. a manhattan jury finding the former president guilty of all 34 charges in a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election with hush-money payments to an adult film star. outside the courthouse, chee and jeers erupted as crowds gathered to witness the historic moment. this morning the verdict is splashed across the front page of newspapers here and across the globe. cbs' jarred hill is outside of trump tower with more on the verdict, the reaction, and of course what's to come next. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that is a huge question -- what happens next? right now it's pretty quiet around trump tower, although there are police and barricades for a couple of blocks as we are expecting the former president to speak here at trump tower after this historic conviction.
4:32 am
former president donald trump -- now a convicted felon -- is vowing to appeal. >> i'm a very innocent man who will keep fighting. we'll fight until the end. >> reporter: trump was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide reimbursements to former fixer michael cohen who paid adult film star stormy daniels $130,000 in the run-up to the 2016 election. that money to keep quiet about an alleged sexual encounter. it took the jurors 12 hours to reach a verdict. >> the only voice that matters is the voice of the jury, and the jury has spoken. >> reporter: attorneys for michael cohen called the verdict a testament to his credibility. that credibility attacked by trump lawyer todd blanche during the trial and again last night on cnn. >> they looked past what we thought were fatal flaws in mr. cohen's story and his past, and they reached a guilty verdict. >> reporter: with the fight out of the courtroom for now, trump

pivoted to politics last night attending a fundraiser after his guilty verdict. the conviction puts an unprecedented spin on the presidential election. >> the real verdict is going to be november 5th by the people. >> reporter: the trump campaign almost immediately pushed fundraising messages claiming he's a political prisoner. president biden's campaign also fundraising with the message there is still only one way to keep donald trump out of the oval office -- at the ballot box. trump's sentencing is scheduled for july 11th, just four days before the republican national convention. now the penalty here rangings -- ranges from fines to probation and possibly even prison time. we're talking four years per count. is prison time something that's likely? legal experts are telling cbs news probably not. but to be honest, we don't really know where this goes. the judge is likely to consider factors including that he doesn't have a record when the
4:34 am
sentencing happens again in july. >> you know, before that, though, i guess the expectation, of course, that donald trump and his attorneys are going to fight this verdict. what are some of the avenues for appeal? >> reporter: that's right. he's been saying this really from the jump yesterday, that they're going to fight this. and the appeals process is more than just i don't like the verdict so let's try and fight against it. there has to be legal grounding. we've seen trump's legal team laying some of that groundwork already with a number of objections to the charges as well as some of the proceedings during the trial. some of the possible avenues they could go forward with include accusing the judge of being biased here. they've cited some of his family members' part worth with the democrats. they could say the jurors were improperly allowed to hear salacious details about the alleged interaction with stormy daniels, some say that they were irrelevant and tough to come back from. we don't know yet. we'll have to wait and see.
4:35 am
>> jarred hill in midtown manhattan. thank you so much. the only official comment from the white house is from the counsel's office saying we respect the rule of law and have no additional comment. house speaker mike johnson reacting to the verdict saying it was a shameful day in american history, and that the charges were purely political. south carolina senator granl graham, who has been a -- one of trump's most frequent allies -- says this verdict says more about the system than the allegations, and it will backfire tremendously on the political left. senate republican leader mitch mcconnell coming to the former president's defense saying the charges never should have been brought in the first place. while democrats pulled no punches. connecticut senator chris murphy saying "trump toadies are going to attack the area and the court because they have a plan to dismantle our desrecreational
4:36 am
-- dismantle our system and it relies on everyone believing the justice system is rigged. it isn't. donald trump committed a crime. he got caught. he got convicted. that's the rule of law." new york senior senator chuck schumer simply saying no one is above the law. the verdict speaks for itself. and donald trump's conviction is a first for a presidential election, but in a deeply divided america it may not have a major impact on voters, especially in battleground states like pennsylvania. >> i think that there are a lot of people out there that believe that this particular case was brought for purely political reasons. >> there's a lot of things that he has done wrong, and i know maybe has a lot of followers they don't believe that. >> some voters in arizona also seem unfazed by the jury's verdict. >> i can't say that i'm surprised. i was expecting it. so -- actually. >> i don't understand how he would have possibly thought he would have got away with that. justice is served. >> no.
4:37 am
i'm voting for trump. yeah. he will be my number-one ballot vote. >> voters in texas appear divided with some saying the verdict could change their minds, while others blame the system. >> it might affect my vote. just simply i don't think we need a convict in office. >> i wasn't surprised but was disappointed. >> i think it's all a sham. i think they shouldn't be able to run election interference the way they are. in florida, trump supporters gathered near mar-a-lago after the verdict to rally for the former president. "cbs mornings" will have much more on the trump verdict including analysis and reaction, and a live interview with republican senator tom cotton of arkansas. turning to texas where crews are struggling to restore power to nearly 200,000 customers following days of severe weather. there was a new round of storms yesterday afternoon.
