the weekend is finally here: we made it and it is going to be a nice mild one for us. better yet dive real fast into what the next seven days are going to look like for us. we're dealing with some gusty conditions tomorrow. some cloudy conditions too and anywhere from oakland all the way over into san francisco. we'll continue to watch that trend into this weekend and then a big warm-up right around the corner as we head into next week. but let's dive straight into our virtual reality map on a beautiful friday morning like this. the sun is slowly starting to rise and as that happens we're going to expect a beautiful day ahead of us with 60s in the forecast near san francisco. 70s across the bay bridge over into oakland. and it's another day of 90s for us off in the east bay. 92 degrees today in antioch. 70s down into redwood city and we continue to watch stretching down from 101 down into the santa clara valley, we'll continue to see warm dry weather for thus afternoon. it's a little glitchy right now in the next couple of minutes. but here's what it looks like throughout the bay area this morning. mild and cool. but a big warm-up right around the corner for us and that's the case as we head

into this afternoon. daytime highs are still above average off in the inland areas and that's not the case -- oops as we head into this weekend. more on that in a bit. for now over to you, g. a look at the roadways right now getting ready to head over to the bay bridge. now is a great tame to be on the freeways. quiet conditions on most of the roadways and in fact actually started off a busy spot on the lower speck. lanes are open and it's all clear now. no delays there. and a live look at oakland if you have the early flight to catch this morning and taking 880 the nimitz over to the oakland airport right now. everything is clear and checking traffic here as you work your way in and out of berkeley this morning. so far, so good for those east bay commutes. this was a disgrace. this was a rigged trial by a conflicted judge who is corrupt. >> former president donald trump not mincing words moments after his historic conviction in new york. trump denounced the verdict finding him guilty in connection with a hush money

payment. the former president was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying business records to hide reimbursements to his former fixer. michael cohen. cohen paid adult film star stormy daniels $130,000 in the run up to the 2016 election to keep quiet about an alleged sexual encounter with trump. >> only voice that matters is the voice of the jury. and the jury has spoken. >> up next for the former president, in this case, the judge has set trump's sentencing for july 11th. four days before the republican national convention. he faces up to four years in prison but could be given probation with no prison time. we spoke with rory little from the uc college of law who thinks it will end in probation and fines. >> i think the importance of the trial is that it happened at all. and the judge did a very good job of keeping this

case on a calm, sort of nondramatic level. he tried it pretty slowly and carefully. the jurors paid attention according to all reports. and they -- it didn't take them very long to reach a unanimous verdict here. >> and this was the only case now pending against former president trump that's likely to end in a verdict before election day. and it's believed that he cannot legally pardon himself if elected president in november. so gianna, no surprise that we saw quick reaction from all political spectrums and of course around the country after that verdict on thursday. >> i mean lot of people are talking about this historic moment there. and of course we want to know what you are thinking as you weigh in on this and your thoughts after the jury came down with a decision. so we hit streets of san francisco to hear from you. >> i'm e static to be honest with you. it's long time coming. serves him right and i would also go as far as to say that i would like to see everyone who voted for him convicted for aiding and abetting. >> i will vote for trump more

so than i ever thought i would. but the democrats, what biden is doing to our country, is shameful. >> well, we also heard from the chairman of the contra costa republican party. he said this might activate more moderate republicans who believe the whole trial was a misuse of the judicial system. >> i would not like to see this type of prosecution taking on against a next democrat president either. it's just -- it's -- it's a sad day for our legal system. >> well, trump's conviction may actually be helping him raise money and now he's hitting the campaign trail and heading to san francisco. coming here next week for a fundraiser. andrea nakano talked with a political expert with what we can expect now from the former president. >> this was a rigged trial by a conflicted judge. >> reporter: a guilty verdict? may have been a big win for

donald trump's pocketbook. donations started flooding into mr. trump's win red website causing it to crash. the republican candidate for president also giving his constituents a chance to win an autographed maga hat in return for a donation. >> they believe that this is red meat. and dark liquor thrown to their constituency, i mean right up their alley because they know they can raise money from this and they can develop some momentum. >> reporter: david mccuan says that moment up will carry over to the fundraising event in california. >> california is the atm of the nation. when it comes to politics. >> reporter: while california leans left, he says that's not what matters. >> it's not just the blue state. it's a red state. it's a green money state. it's a dollar state. look, elon musk maybe be here and all over the world, and maybe intergalactic but he and his friend give a lot of money. >> reporter: while cash is king in a presidential campaign, donald trump needs to win over a key segment of voters,

especially in swing states such as pennsylvania, michigan and wisconsin. it's the undecided that he's targeting across the country. >> purple people we call them. the purple people are a little bit blue and a little bit red and not sure what to do and we know there's a segment of the electorate that is -- won't vote for a felon. >> reporter: so while the money may be flowing in for now, it may be too early to tell how his conviction and possible sentence will affect fundraising in the long-term. >> so i think this gives you an idea of the strategy of donald trump and his team. they're going to use today's verdict to open things up and go on the offense. not just talk to the faithful. they're going to open up the map and be everywhere all at once and they're going to have the resources to do that. >> former president trump is expected to hold a press conference this morning at trump tower. you can catch this right here on cbs news bay area and of course for all the coverage on this historic verdict, also head to our website. kpix.com. time now for a look at this

morning's other top stories. protesters against the war in gaza are facing off with law enforcement officers at uc santa cruz. these are scenes from just before 2:00 in the morning. chp officers in riot gear are standing in a line at the university's west entrance near coolidge and high streets. at one point, the officers moved forward and dismantled several tents but students ignored orders to disperse and continued to chant slogans while some stand with their arms locked. a state trial in the attack of paul pelosi will resume today in san francisco. david depape faces charges of attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, and elder abuse. paul pelosi the husband of former house speaker nancy pelosi, suffered a skull fracture from the hammer attack in october of 2022. he's expected to testify today and the court has heard a recording of a police interview with depape a few hours after the attack. prosecutors say the recording shows the congresswoman was his initial target. the judge in show e that

county is expected to rule today on whether the death sentence for richard allen davis should be overturned. davis is the man who killed 12-year-old polly class of petaluma a widely publicized case in the 1990s and now looking to have his capital sentence recalled based on a new california law. davis was sentenced to death in 1996. the reopening of the wharf in santa cruz county has been delayed and crews have been working for months to repair the landmark after it was battered during winter storms last year. it was set to reopen on august 14th. now that will likely happen a few weeks later sometime in september. time now 5:10. counting down to pride month on this friday morning. the kickoff across the bay. plus. ♪ ♪ it's a musical weekend in the bay. your chance to dance and also play air guitar. we'll be right back.

celebrations of pride month honoring our lgbtq community are about to begin. today the city of oakland will be raising the pride flag at city hall. and in san francisco, a huge 3,000 square foot pride flag will be unrolled down the side of the beacon grand hotel in union square. great way to kick off that month long

mexican pop group mana. fresh from their performance at bottle rock and they are back headlining the first ever la onda festival and crowds of music fans are heading to the napa valley expo for the weekend festival. that promises to be an historic celebration of latin music with a lineup of major touring artists. la onda will showcase local and regional latin food and beverages. not only do you have the great music, mana one of my favorites and in factmy husband was singing them last night. he was like i hear it all the time from you. because of me. but you know all the food too and all the local businesses. you talked about one yesterday in south city and the empanadas we did a deep dive. >> i can confirm the food will be very good and it's just so cool to be there. the first time i think this is going to be a very successful festival and a new bay area tradition. so be there and enjoy it on its historic first year. all right, let's talk about weather here. we are looking out from mount diablo the big question for festivals and those of us who are going

to be out and about in the bay area, how will the weather be? hello again to jessica burch, hey jess. >> good morning to both of you. stunning, beautiful, warm as we head into this afternoon. that's kind of the forecast for us today but then a little bit of a cooldown as we head into this weekend. so let's dive straight into that. what are we expecting this afternoon? well, another day of daytime highs sitting just a little bit above average. once we head into this weekend, low pressure moves in from the north and that cools us off for just a bit so much so that we actually get a little bit of coastal drizzle and then once we head into next week, we're right back to a bigger warm-up right right and we'll dive into that in just a bit. this is what we have this morning. 40s up near the coast and petaluma and 50s and 60s in the east bay right now and heading into the next couple of days i think it's worth noting that the climate prediction center is showing above normal temperatures. not only here in the bay area, but widespread throughout the state of california as we head into the next six to ten days. with that in mind that leads into next week when we expect another big warm-up right around the

corner. daytime highs this afternoon in the 60s near san francisco. and upper 50s along the coast. not the case in our inland areas though. goodness gracious upper 80s and lower 90s anywhere from antioch down into livermore and 80 degrees today near fremont and let's stretch all the way down into the santa clara valley. san jose this afternoon, even warmer than yesterday. sitting at 86 degrees. and heading into the next seven days, well, we are in store for a lot of sunshine right around the corner for us. at least as we extend into this weekend. yeah, the partly cloudy skies are going to come in and out throughout the inland areas but a lot more apparent along the coast. but this big warm-up and i mean look at monday into tuesday of next week. wednesday into thursday. we jump from the low 80s to the upper 90s in the forecast for us. just within a two day span. that's what high pressure does for us and really warms us up especially in our inland areas. and it brings in a lot of sunshine too. along the bay closer to oakland or actually berkeley too, we're talking about low 70s into this weekend. and into early next week, and then we jump into the low 80s but those clouds going to hold on tight to us if you

live along the bay shoreline. we'll have more on that in a bit. for now over to you, g. jess thanks. the roadways on a friday morning. friday light so far at the bay bridge toll plaza. easy ride into san francisco. which is great. if you are up early it's always a little tough to hear that alarm. but at least you know the roadways and freeways usually pretty quiet and that's the case this morning. not seeing lot of issues. there's a few brake lights heading into the altamont pass this morning. as you come off of 205 getting on to 580. but travel times not too bad. we have a ramp closure for an accident. north 101 from san antonio road is completely shut down as crews work on a crash. not affecting the main lines too much as far as the closure goes. but we are seeing some brake lights in and around there so do keep that in mind. over to the south bay we go. taking 101, # 7, everything looks pretty good there and south bay travel times all in the green which is good news, we like to see that. north 101, 85 to 680 and 280. that's an easy eight minute commute and if you are crossing the bay via the san mateo bridge, right now not crowded at all on this

taking a live look from oakland at the coliseum. where the city is celebrating a plan to sell its half of the stadium for more than $100 million. officials worked out a tentative deal with a private developer and they want to thanks form the site by building housing and retail space and restaurants. but project is not a done deal just yet because the athletics own the other half of the coliseum. and it's not clear if the a's will play ball on this plan. so we asked mayor sheng thao about that. >> i do believe that through the cooperation of both sides, they both know that there's a value of the reason why it's so incredibly important to develop this deep east oakland parcel. >> the a's are playing their final season in oakland before they temporarily move to sacramento while they wait for their new ballpark to be built in las vegas. meantime the city's newest baseball team the oakland ballers are getting ready for the home opener.

welcome back. right now on cbs news bay area it is 5:29 and less than three hours, former president donald trump plans to hold a press conference at trump tower following his conviction yesterday for falsifying business records. he is now the first former u.s. president convicted of a crime. jarred hill is live outside of trump tower this morning with more on the verdict. the reaction and of course what everyone is thinking about now. jarred, is what comes next? good morning. >> reporter: ÷good morning, gianna, that's a big question. what comes next? immediately it's going to be this press conference from former president trump here at trump tower in just about two or so hours. after that are a lot of other questions when it comes to how this plays out politically as well as legally for the former president. former president donald trump now a convicted felon is vowing to appeal. >> i'm a very innocent man.

we'll keep fighting and we'll fight till the end. >> reporter: trump was convicted on all 34 counts of falsifying bids records in the runup to the 2016 election. that money to keep quiet about an alleged sexual encounter with trump. it took the 12 jurors 11 hours to reach a verdict. >> the only voice that matters is the voice of the jury. and the jury has spoken. >> reporter: in a statement, attorneys for michael cohen called the verdict a testament to his credibility. that credibility attacked by trump lawyer todd blanche during the trial. and again last night on cnn. >> they looked past what we thought were fatal flaws in mr. cohen's story. and his past. and they reached a guilty verdict. >> reporter: with the fight out of the courtroom for now, former president trump turned to politics. attending a fundraiser last night after his guilty verdict. this conviction putting an unprecedented spin on the presidential election.

>> the real verdict is going to be november 5th by the people. >> reporter: the trump campaign almost immediately pushed fundraising messages. claiming he's a political prisoner. president biden's campaign also fundraising with a message, there's still only way to keep donald trump out of the oval office. at the ballot box. trump's sentencing is scheduled for july 11th just four days before the republican national convention. all right, let's talk a bit more about that sentencing and what we can actually see happen there. former president trump could face everything from fines to probation, possibly even prison time. we're talking four years for each one of these 34 counts. but legal analysts and experts are telling cbs news that it's not likely the former president will actually spend time behind bars for a number of reasons. including the fact that he does not have a criminal background as well as the nature of these white collar crimes. but again, as we said a lot of this, we'll have to wait and see what actually happens once the sentencing comes into play. back to you.

diverting traffic off the freeway at ranks door of and you can get back on at oregon expressway. but in the meantime stick with 280 or el camino real as an alternate route and i'll let you know when the lanes open up but again northbound 101 all lanes shut down completely due to a fatal crash. another look outside on this friday morning as we've been saying what a beautiful day. this is from sutro tower looking out at the city. that sunrise looking absolutely gorgeous so let's go back to jessica burch and jess, what are we expecting for this weekend? hopefully more of the same. >> oh you know, i wish we can hold on tight to the warm weather. but we're actually cooling down a bit as we head into this weekend. and if you like the warm weather, don't worry. the weekend is going to be cool but then we warm right back up and actually heat up i should say as we head into next week because we have 90s right around the corner for us throughout many inland areas, not the case this morning though. 40s and 50s right now all throughout the peninsula and anywhere from san francisco down to half-moon bay. 60s all the way off closer to concord. we're sitting in the upper 50s

near fairfield and here's what's happening for us heading into this afternoon. we're still above normal for our daytime highs. heading into this afternoon. i'll show you those in just a minute. but then we cool down just a bit more as low pressure moves in from the north. and that's going to bring in some cloudy skies and some cooler temperatures too right around the corner for us. let's talk more about that right now and we'll dive into the winds coming up in just a bit. what's happening for us this afternoon? 60s golden gate bridge down into san francisco. this is the time of year where all of our microclimates are really doing their own thing and that's the case with that coastal breeze really impacting our areas like half-moon bay and pacifica this afternoon. topping off in the 50s in both the areas. but yep, we see 90s all the way off in the east bay near antioch and 80s near livermore and fremont and down into san jose. this weekend like said yes it's going to be cooler and cloudier but then a big warm-up is 457ing next week. for now over to you shawn. all right. thank you so much. time now for a look at this morning's other top stories. some sad news to report from the basketball

world. san jose native and archbishop mitty alum drew gordon died yesterday in a car accident in portland, oregon. he played briefly for the 76ers and various pro teams in europe and his younger brother a ron still plays for the denver nuggets. san francisco police will hold a public meeting today about a recent officer-involved shooting. it happened on may 23rd at connor and jennings streets. in the bay view. so far police have said they used non-lethal force against a suspect who was brandishing some kind of weapon. they plan to give more details at a virtual town hall at 3:00 this afternoon. taking a live look at san francisco city hall. public safety is taking center stage in the mayoral race. and mayor london breed is vowing to make it one of her top priorities in the budget she's releasing today. the city is facing a nearly $800 million shortfall over the next two years. but as the mayor fights to keep her job, she's promising to double down on investing in public safety strategies. yesterday,

she released some details including plans to fund four police academies next year to help fill a shortage of about 500 officers on the force. the budget also includes $3.7 million for new technology including drones and surveillance cameras. as well as money to help the sheriff's office boost its staffing levels. and continued investment in community safety ambassadors. the mayor says the city's crime rate right now is the lowest in ten years. but lauren toms spoke to some people whose perception just doesn't line up with those numbers. >> i put the chicken wire on. keep them from you know, not being able to get through the glass and i have the little device over that so they can't grab the hook and then if they get past all that and they try to open the door, and they're able to disengage it it's going to hit that bar. and they won't be able to open it. >> reporter: ken wicker never intended to become known for installing this contraption. that locks garages. a common target of property crimes. >> i never did this for the --

business. i just did it to mike the neighborhood safer. >> reporter: since the start of the pandemic, the richmond district has become a hotbed for robberies, particularly through garages. ken nearly became a victim himself. but along with his son quinn, they've teamed up to help more than 200 of their neighbors protect their own homes. >> you would do the -- the drilling and i would get up on a ladder and do that stuff. and then -- any given night in the richmond district, there's a van driving around this neighborhood casing -- for crime. >> reporter: according to new crime stats from sfpd property crime is down across the city 32% so far this year. in the richmond, it's down nearly 4%. but that's a far cry compared to areas like the northern district, which covers alamo square up through pacific heights and the marina. where property crime is down a whopping 38%. according to the city violent crime is down 14% and gun violence is down 37%. and while these numbers show improvement, ken says demand

for their business remains steady. receiving at least six calls a month. >> you know, i don't know about statistics all i know is that -- i keep getting calls for people wanting to have me come install these things. i see the crime going on. so i don't know that it's -- reducing or not. >> reporter: while the latest figures are some to be celebrated by mayor london breed, running for re-election in a crowded and competitive field, they're not felt by all. the district is the only area in san francisco to see an increase in property crimes. up correction over 3% this year. he says on april 22nd, burglars broke through his front door and stole seven tablets. and was told there's nothing authorities could do. >> i really don't feel that but i believe they can do something better to decrease the crime. i think that they're frustrated -- they have their -- police can't get their security and tell them, we can do is -- [ inaudible ] what's

freeways right now. i do want to let you know about a pretty big trouble spot on 101 this morning. this is along the peninsula. and waiting on an update from chp. but looks like they may have opened a lane or two. this is on northbound 101 as you commute near san antonio road. that portion between there and oregon expressway is completely shut down. unfortunately for a trouble spot there. sadly this is a deadly crash. someone died in this accident. unfortunately. and there are a couple of vehicles as well as a big rig involved and just getting an update from chp at this moment and they are opening at least the left lane. so hopefully that will help with traffic congestion in that area. again, that backup isn't too bad it's friday and less cars on roadway. but if it stays out there longer we might see a completely different situation. 82. 280 all good alternates to avoid any of the brake lights or delays. they are getting you and diverting you off the freeway and putting you back on at oregon expressway or enter in getting on the freeway and you avoid some of the brake

areas too. it will be mild for us this weekend but then another little heat wave. major heat wave mid next week where upper 90s are expected in the inland areas for the first time this year. so this is what it's looking like for us right now above normal temperatures for us this afternoon. that means 80s and 90s off in the east bay. 70s and 60s along the coast and the peninsula. and here's what's happing this weekend. that low pressure system moves in and that will bring in some more clouds for us. but still dry in our inland areas. like i said that coastal drizzle just be noticeable in areas like pacifica and half-moon bay bodega bay and speaking of the bay, light winds for us this morning. actually beautiful right now and we get a little bit gustier this afternoon. but just like clockwork that always happens. at least no 40-mile-per-hour wind gusts like we had earlier this week. into the dinner time hours about 30-mile-per-hour winds up into the north and about 25 miles per hour winds into san francisco but the next seven days real fast starting off with the inland areas. upper 80s turning into lower 80s this weekend. then 90s right around the corner into early next week. we can see some upper 90s as early as next
