bs news broadcast center in new york city, i'm matt pieper. it's monday, june 3rd, 2024. this is "cbs news mornings." raging wildfire. california firefighters are battling both the flames and the wind. thousands evacuated from their homes. water emergency. the race to return running water in atlanta after several pipes burst sending water rushing into the streets.

and law and politics. a presidential election entangled in legal drama enters a new phase as the spotlight shifts from the criminal trial of a former president to one involving the sitting president's son. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. former president trump is speaking out again just days after a manhattan jury found him guilty in the so-called hush-money case. and new cbs news polling provides our first look at how voters are reacting. it shows the majority of americans surveyed think the jury reached the right verdict and that the former president received a fair trial. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us now from new york with the details. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. yet another indication of the deeply polarized politics in our nation. most americans say those 34 guilty verdicts do not change their views of the trial or former president donald trump. that said, most americans do not

believe trump should serve prison time for his conviction. in his first tv interview since his manhattan conviction, former president donald trump told fox news he would be okay with having to serve prison time or house arrest, but he issued this warning -- >> i think it would be tough for the public to take. you know, at a certain point there's a breaking point. >> reporter: trump repeated his plans to appeal and railed against the verdict. >> it's weaponization of the justice department, of the fbi. and you know that's all coming out of washington. >> reporter: president joe biden forcefully pushed back those claims friday. >> reckless, it's dangerous, it's irresponsible for anyone to say this was rigged just because they don't like the verdict. >> reporter: a new cbs poll shows that more than half of americans surveyed believe the verdict was right, though there continues to be a huge political divide in public opinion. a smaller majority of respondents said they don't believe trump should serve prison time after his conviction.

saturday night the former president received a standing ovation while attending a ufc match in new jersey. the next day he posted a video of his interactions with fans there to launch his new tiktok account. trump already has more than three million tiktok followers and counting, dwarfing the amount of followers the biden-harris campaign has amassed since it joined tiktok in february. former president trump returns to the campaign trail next weekend with a rally planned in las vegas on sunday. meanwhile, president biden travels to france this week to mark the 80th anniversary of d-day. so despite all this time in the courtroom, both candidates are keeping november 5th top of mind. now just five months away from election day. anne-marie? >> clock is ticking. naomi ruchim in new york. thank you. jury selection is set to begin in delaware today in the federal gun trial of hunter

biden. president biden's son is accused of lying about his drug use on federal forms when he bought a gun in 2018. he pleaded not guilty after an earlier deal that would have kept him out of prison collapsed. hunter biden also faces a separate trial in california later this year on tax charges. and breaking overnight, mexico has elected its first female president. former mexico city mayor claudia sheinbaum is projected to win by a decisive margin in yesterday's election. the two leading candidates are both women. national and local campaigns across the country have been marred by violence. sheinbaum has pledged to continue many of the policies of outgoing president andres manuel lopez obrador. fire crews in california are making some progress getting control of a wind-driven wildfire. so far it's scorched thousands of acres 60 miles east of san francisco. the flames broke out saturday, spreading fast in the grassy hills of san juan county.

-- san joaquin county. cbs' elise preston has more. >> reporter: the fire exploded overnight just south of sacramento to more than 14,000 acres. several nearby neighborhoods ordered to evacuate and two major highways were temporarily shut down due to poor visibility from all the smoke. >> definitely scary. it's the first time i've been so much close. >> reporter: more than 400 crews from across the state are battling the fire, but the extreme heat, 40 mile-per-hour winds, and dry grass are fueling the flames. >> the big concern is the grass crop. it's, you know, four-feet tall and thick and matted. >> reporter: residents and their animals are rushing to safety. >> one structure on the ground. not sure whether's it's a garage or a house. >> reporter: at least one structure has been destroyed. the flames have also spread to within 15 miles of a site cited -- site operated by the lawrence livermore

national laboratory which contains explosives. officials there say there is no threat to the facility. two firefighters were hospitalized with burns. elise preston, cbs news, los angeles. water pressure slowly returning to downtown atlanta and nearby neighborhoods after a two-day water outage shut down businesses and left faucets dry at many homes. the city remains under a state of emergency after a series of water main breaks sent water shooting out of the ground and gushing down streets. cbs' dave malkoff reports. >> reporter: shooting from the ground like a geyser, this water main break created a river rushing through the streets of atlanta. there was another break west of downtown, and the city is investigating two more potential breaks. for a time water stopped flowing at atlanta's airport and at several area hospitals where they had to relocate patients and cancel elective surgeries. by saturday crews had the first break patched up and some water was restored. atlanta's water system provides

water for 1.2 million people. those living within 50 square miles in the heart of atlanta have had no clean water to drink since friday. >> water. >> there's water. >> reporter: he's saying lots of water. can he drink any of it? >> nope. >> reporter: city officials put some of the blame on decaying pipes. others were unhappy they didn't immediately hear from the mayor andre dickens. saturday he issued a state of emergency. >> we actually definitely understand your frustration. >> i'm upset. >> reporter: among the mayor's critics rapper megan thee stallion whose friday and saturday night shows at state farm arena were canceled. >> that's really crazy that a major city in the u.s. is going this long without no [ bleep ] water. >> reporter: dave malkoff, cbs news, atlanta. to the middle east where hamas and israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu are under increasing pressure to sign off

on the truce president biden outlined last week. secretary of state antony blinken spoke by phone yesterday with israeli defense minister and the war minister saying the onus is on hamas to accept the proposal. the first phase would last six weeks and include a withdrawal of israeli forces from all populated areas of gaza, the release of a number of hostages, in exchange for hundreds of palestinian prisoners. white house national security communications adviser john kirby says the u.s. expects that if hamas agrees israel would say yes. >> we're also not saying that hamas has been wiped off the face of the map. we've not said that hamas has no military capabilities. we've not said they don't still represent a viable threat to the israeli people. of course they do. but they don't have the military capabilities to do what they did on the 7th of october. >> in a statement, prime minister netanyahu insisted the war continues until hamas' military and governing capabilities were destroyed and

that gaza no longer poses a threat. in new york city, families of hostages joined thousands of marchers and politicians for the annual israel day parade. this year's event, though, much more subdued with extremely tight security and participants chanting for the release of hostages. texas congresswoman sheila jackson lee is battling pancreatic cancer. the 74-year-old democrat says she's undergoing treatment. lee was first elected in congress in 1994 and won her democratic primary re-election and faces a contest for re-election in november. in 2012 lee said that she was cancer free after a year -- a year after being diagnosed with breast cancer. coming up, shark attack. a swimmer at a california beach suffers multiple injuries. and simone biles lands another national title as she continues her march to the paris olympics. [ applause ] dozens of u.s. veterans received heroes welcome saturday as they arrived in paris to mark d-day's 80th anniversary. many of the veterans are close to or more than 100 years old. yesterday parachutists jumped from world war ii-airplanes in the skies over normandy as part of the week-long ceremonies. about 160,000 allied troops took part in the pivotal invasion of france in 1944 that led to the defeat of nazi germany. a deadly mass shooting in ohio, and danger at the beach. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the san diego union-tribune" reports a swimmer was seriously injured in a shark attack off the southern california coast. authorities say the 46-year-old man was swimming with about a dozen people yesterday at del mar city beach when the attack took place. it happened about 100 yards for -- from a lifeguard station. the man was bitten in the torso, left arm, and hand.

his injuries are not life threatening, and the beach was closed to surfers and swimmers. "the akron beacon journal" says at least one person was killed and 24 wounded in a mass shooting at a large outdoor party in the city. police say a 27-year-old man died when gunfire erupted early yesterday morning. investigators say it happened -- rather, it appears to be a targeted incident. no arrests have been reported, and a witness said some people were trampled as the crowd to -- crowd tried to get away. the injured range from 19 to 43. two handguns and more than 35 bullet casings were found at the scene. and "the idaho statesman" says a jury sentenced chad daybell to death for the murders of his first wife and two of his current wife's children. daybell was sentenced on saturday, two days after he was convicted of murdering tammy daybell, 16-year-old tylee ryan, and 7-year-old joshua vallow. the remains of the children were found buried in daybell's backyard in 2020 just months after they disappeared.

the 32nd annual pride parade in the borough of queens. check your fridge. there is a cucumber recall. and the big oil-producing countries strike a deal. what does this mean for your wallet, that's the question. here's matt pieper with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks ended mostly higher on wall street, closing out the market's latest winning month. the dow gained 574. the nasdaq was down 2. s&p 500 gaining 42 points. opec has agreed to keep oil production cut which means oil prices will remain elevated through the presidential election. the opec alliance made up of members of the producers cartel and allied countries including russia extended three sets of cuts totaling 5.8 million barrels a day. analysts say the cuts could push oil prices higher in the coming months, but much depends on demand for oil going forward. check those cucumbers. fresh start produce sales of del rey florida is recalling cucumbers that were shipped to
