announce an executive order today to limit the number of asylum seekers entering the u.s. fighting fire and terror. hezbollah sets northern communities ablaze as they put pressure on hamas and israel to accept the latest cease-fire deal. good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. if former president trump's trial wasn't salacious enough about a hush money payment to cover up sex with a porn star, hunter biden's trial is going to dig into his past and his struggles with drug addiction. he's facing three charges in connection with a 2018 purchase of a fire aarm. a jury of six men and six women were seated yesterday along with four alternates. cbs's jarred hill is joining us now from new york with what we can expect during opening statements today. jarred, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. lawyers are going to begin making their case before the trial that will likely reveal

the personal struggles of the president's son hunter biden. it's the first time in american history that the trial of a sitting u.s. president has faced criminal prosecution. >> reporter: this morning from a delaware courtroom, opening statements in a federal firearms case against the president's son huntser biden. >> it's not often in american history that you have the son of the president of the united states being charged with three federal felonies and standing trial. >> reporter: hunter biden has pleaded not guilty that he illegally bought or owned a handgun while addicted to or using drugs and by making false statements on a federal form when he made the purchase back in 2018. a plea deal that would have averted the trial fell apart at the last minute last year. prosecutors are expected to use hunter biden's own words from his memoir, detailing history of his drugs as well as evidence and text evidence and images from his laptop. expected interests includes biden's past romantic partners

ex-wife kathleen buhl and hallie buyen, widow of brother beau. >> this is going to be very painful fe or joe biden. >> reporter: jill biden spent her 73rd birthday in court with the july selection of hunter biden. the president said in part, jill and i are going to be there with hunter with love and support. if convicted hunter could face up to 25 years in prison. this trial is likely to last one to two weeks. hunter has pleaded not guilty in a tax case out of california. that trial is set to start in september. you know, anne-marie, while the president is not on trial here, you cannot help but note the timing just months before the presidential election. >> indeed. jarred hill in new york. thank you, jarred. president biden is expected to issue an executive order today that would partially shut down asylum processing at the u.s./mexico border.

sources tell cbs news the asylum ban will take effect when the number of migrants apprehended at the border is more than 2,500 a day. that means it could take effect immediately since last month it averaged 3,800 a day according to border patrol. the order would allow u.s. immigration officials to deport migrants who enter the country illegally without processing their asylum claims. the executive order is likely to face legal challenges though. and firefighters continue to make progress against the largest wildfire in california this year as a major heatwave bears down on the west. the wind-driven corral fire has burned more than 14,000 acres outside the city of tracy since saturday. that's about 60 miles east of san francisco. the fire is now 85% contained. the evacuation warnings were listed for thousands of people, but temperatures topping 100 degrees in some areas will increase the fire risk over the next several days. and now to the middle east.

israel is fighting fires along with several iranian-backed tar royer groups. israeli forces have joined firefighters trying to get control of the wild fires burning across northern israel that started by rockets and drones hezbollah launched from lebanon. the idf says six reservists suffered smoke inhalation. meanwhile israeli military announced four more hostages have died in captivity in gaza, three of them in their 80s were seen in a hamas video begging for their release. now that is adding to the pressure on prime minister netanyahu to reach a deal to bring the remaining hostages home. cbs's imtiaz tyab reports from tel aviv. >> reporter: it was in the ruins of the southern gaza city of khan younis where the remains of nadav popplewell, haim perry, amiram cooper, and yoram metzger were found by the israeli military. this hamas propaganda video

released in december shows the three of them alive. it's not known how they died, but an army spokesperson says it likely happened months ago. the discovery of the remains of hostages has intensified the pressure on netanyahu. on saturday over 160,000 israelis took to the streets of tel aviv demanding he move forward with a deal to release the hostages and end the war in gaza as outlined by president biden. >> the most important thing is bringing them back right now, no matter what. >> reporter: nets ya hue insisting he has not been pressured to dismiss the cease-fire deal by members of his own extreme right wing coalition after two ultra-nationalist leaders threatened to quit and topple his government over the plan. the goals of the war, chief among them, is the elimination of hamas. with prime minister insisting on eliminating hamas and hamas continuing to refuse a truce without a permanent cease-fire, president biden's outline may

not be achievable, and that could mean many more months of war. imtiaz tyab, cbs news, tel aviv. more than 640 million votes are being counted in india's six-week election. exit polls indicate that prime minister narendra modi will be elected to a third term after a decade in power. earlier reports show that modi's bjp party and its allies are comfortably ahead. it would be only the second time in a country's history that a leader has retained power for a third time. and dr. anthony fauci was on the hot seat testifying before congress on his role during the early days of the covid pandemic. it was his first public appearance since retiring from government service after four decades. the story from cbs's nicole sganga. >> reporter: dr. anthony fauci defended his role in guides the government's official role in

unfurled its country's flag from the other side of the moon, it's collected rock collecting and starting its historic journey back to earth. a container full of samples will be returned in another sample returned later on this month. it will be the first time samples from the far sued of the moon will make it back to earth. chilling notes from gabby petito's murderer and more on the serial killer. sources tell cbs new york that gilgo beach serial killer suspect rex heuermann will be indicted on a new murder charge this week. it comes after investigators searched heuermann's long island home last month and combed through a wooded area. the 60-year-old architect earlier pleaded not guilty to murdering four women whose remains were found among a remote beach highway. the remains of 11 people were discovered in the area between 1996 and 2011. the "new york post" says

brian laundrie's fbi file reveals his mania before he killed his fiancee gabby petito during their cross-country trip. the files include photos of disturbing notes, drawings, and weapons found in his family's florida home after petito's body was discovered in wyoming. in 2021. one drawing showed a skull with the words "trust no one" and "kill." laundrie's body was found in a florida park. his death was ruled a homicide. and the minneapolis "star tribune" says a juror in a federal fraud trial was dismissed after reporting that a woman dropped off a bag containing $120,000 at her home on sunday. the juror said the woman told her father-in-law she would get more money if she acquitted seven people charged with stealing millions of dollars from a federal program. the program was meant to feed low income children during the pandemic. the juror turned over the money to police. 70 people have been charged with stealing more than $250 million from the program. still to come, stealing the spotlight.

elon musk living up to his name x, perhaps with a few more xs, and a bizarre glitch at the new york stock exchange. here's shanelle kaul with the "cbs moneywatch." a mixed start to the volatile kickoff to june. the dow lost 115 points, the nasdaq was up 93 points, and the s&p 500 gained 5 points. a technical glitch temporarily halted trading for dozens of stocks listed on the new york stock exchange monday. up to 40 ticker symbols were impacted including chipotle and berkshire hathaway. a spokesperson says a problem with pricing data was to blame. the new york stock exchange says it's now revealing potentially impacted trades. popular soda brand poppi is facing legal action. the lawsuit says its product don't improve gut health as much as advertised. the suit says if you drink more

north america starting this fall starting in montreal and ending in chicago. prosecutors in the manslaughter case against "rust" star and producer alec baldwin are forcing the arm rohr to testify in his trial. hannah gutierrez-reed was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in march and is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence. she asserted her privilege but could be granted limited immunity if forced to testify. baldwin's trial is set for next month. for like three seconds i was like bracing for impact. >> reporter: chrissy teigen sharing some harrowing moments on a plane with her instagram followers yesterday. the model and cooking author said it was an erroneous takeoff saying the plane was going a thousand miles an hour to take off and then came to a complete stop.
