3:14 pm
this afternoon. we are counting down. to the oak. baller. .... opener at raymond. e park. a park that's on a huge transformation. in just a short time. take a look at the side by side aerials just 2 months ago. raymond park was a dirt field needing a ton of work. now. lush green grass and stan welcome to read, ready to welcome baseball fans. and it's not just the ballpark that's undergoing a huge transformation. the neighborhood in west oakland has struggled for decades with homelessness. trash and blight now, long time residents are seeing hope. when i wrote out here and saw the new buildings in the apartment and condos. it's like a whole new town.
3:15 pm
baseball itself. brings pride. and joy into a neighborhood in the safety concerns with just kind of vanished because baseball will be here, you know. this is a blessing. that oakland really needed. this particular time. this ballpark is bringing community members together. just over a year ago nearby wood street was home to oakland. largest homeless encampment. it spans several blocks with hundreds of people living there since the closing city workers have removed hundreds of tons of trash. other neighbors are also taking notice of the big changes in this west oakland neighborhood. bill and andrew cline, reed were among the 1st families to move into the area back. in 2020. the challenges from the pandemic made it difficult for this neighborhood. to really build momentum. and this time last year, the couple started to consider moving out of the area. but since the ballers announced they would play there, they say the impact has been huge. and now their long term plans are changing.
3:16 pm
actually, we talked about it. it and we're going to stick it out. things go now. now the ballers are in town. note. noticed bill and andrew wouldn't say they're diehard. baseball fans, but they do love the chance to spend time with friends at home games, they say the close proximity to the bees may bring them out to watch. more often. and as we reported bringing the ballers to open really has been a community effort. founders say they 1st won the to start the team because fans were heartbroken about the a's leaving now, they say. it's about more than just baseball. volunteers from a group called friends of raymond e. park have pitched in for months to transform the property and surrounding neighborhood and that was before the ballers. even announced plans to move here. across the street from the field. a formerly empty warehouse. will serve as the teams office and clubhouse. we caught up with volunteers who were busy constructing lockers who was for the facility. including the daughter of the kof, our who says it's been a pretty crazy ride. family were

like, what is happening in his brain. we were like, what is he thinking? are you surprised he was able to do it. yes. i mean, yes. he thinks of a lot of things. but this is probably the biggest she's done yet. joining me live now from reminding park, 1 of the ballers co founders, brian carmel. thank you so much for joining us. my pleasure. thanks for thanks for being here. all right, so celebrate this it is a celebration, today. no question. how are you feeling? it's just hours before the teams. home. opener in oakland. you got butterflies. what's going on? yeah. i don't have butterflies. i've got i mean, there's i still here like drills drilling, and i hear metal being being sod. and things like that. so you know like it. we said it was going to be down to the wire. it's literally going to be down to the hour. i thought it was going to be down to the day. you know, we were assembling. lockers and furniture late last night to get ready for the visiting clubhouse. um, so it's
3:18 pm
definitely been, uh a big effort to get this ready, but i'm feeling good. now that we're like, 3 hours away from game time, i think what's so beautiful about this entire story is watching the community really? embrace. this team. what has that meant to you? and the ballers? it's been really, really incredible honestly and like the outreach that we've gotten from community members just being like, hey, i think what you guys are doing is so amazing. how can i help? there's so many people that have just said, how can i help? what can i do? and you know, i think that that's rare these days. i think everybody's stuck in their phones. everybody's you know, focused on their own agendas and so for folks to come out and, um and want to build something with us. that's bigger than themselves. i think that's really inspiring. i know you're looking forward to tonight and then friday and of course, the rest of summer but what do you want to see happen in the next year with the bees or what? your 5 year goal? great question. i'm just we just want to have a good opening day and a good opening home stand like there's 4000.
3:19 pm
seats. they weren't here a couple of weeks. ago there here now. we want look. you know, i think that great things start. small and then you build and that's been our ethos from the beginning, you know? we are a team that is literally built by oakland, oakland community members have been coming out and helping us build this thing from the ground up and we just want to see that grow and grow. so this is the beginning, but this is not the end of our story. we think that there's no limit. to help big this. this movement can be and it really is an amazing story. it's so good for not only you and your team but also the entire city, can you take me back to that moment when you thought huh? you know what i want to do. i want to start a new baseball team. you know where i want to do it. i want to do it in oakland, a place where a major league baseball team is leaving. good. take me through that that moment where you thought this was a great idea. so it was about a year ago. i should say, i think just a couple of weeks under than a year ago and you know we are we come at this as fans. we were
3:20 pm
heartbroken. when the news of that other baseball team leaving town, you know? came through and it became apparent that they weren't going to stay in oakland and we you know there was an incredible you know, fan movement, to activate last summer around you know the sell movement and we we were incredibly inspired by what groups like the last dive bar in the oakland 68th. we're doing to send a message across the nation. that there can be a different way for sports teams to exist, and we just thought, well, what if we, you know? actually. materialized. that new way of being and so that's where the idea came from. it's like let's just start a new team. we didn't think that this could be the end of baseball in oakland. and so now, you know, literally, we've got a team wearing oakland on their back, taking batting practice right behind me. so it's pretty special. it's been fun to see. new fans where the bees had and the oakland ballers shirts. you know, we know he invested a lot of money in the stadium and, of course, the team and new fans are really eagerly. anticipating these 1st few home games. is he an? is there anything you really want these
3:21 pm
new fans to know about the ballers to experience when they're at raymond park. okay? i just want everybody to have a good time. honestly like this is about our love of community each other. oakland and i think that the hope is that people will come and they have a great time and then they'll come back. that's what we want. but you know that's on us to make sure that it's a good vibe out here that you know. i think it's going to be a work in progress today. we are. we are a startup, right? like we're not. we haven't been around. for decades. so things are not all going to be completely smooth, but we're open and we're going to listen to feedback and we're going to work out the kinks and our hope is that you know, this is this is opening day, but we've got 48 home games this season. we want to pack the house every game. i love that. that's our that's our plea to the community. come on out. to the ballpark. it's a startup bay area knows them well. alright, bothers co founder brian carmel. thank you so much for joining us. thank you appreciate it. all right. right. still ahead. we'll tell you about a baller from right here in the bay, would, he says

3:26 pm
he was signed by the ogden raptors after the pioneer league tryout. ready to move to utah. the raptors manager surprised him with a trade. >>like a few days later, i was actually working at the time. he called me a few days later, i guess. i just raised you to oakland. coming back home and be able to stay at home with that really kind of just like had 2 goals by by myself. i was just fired up after that, >>now close to mom. ugly taken also. lean on his brother and dad. who act as a 2nd pair of eyes after the games. >>like, you know, throw my babies are throwing a game and coming home and kind of debriefing. with my brother who kind of acts like a like a 2nd dad, like a coaching away. or my dad to just kind of being able to tell them how i felt and kind of show videos and have them come out to the games, too. >>martinez, kid. it means a lot to represent the east bay. and continue a proud legacy of baseball in oakland. >>got rid of the warriors and the raiders. soon to be the ace. i feel like we're going to kind of fill that void and kind of bring a lot more more fans to baseball into oakland as well.

(♪♪) i'm getting vaccinated with pfizer's pneumococcal pneumonia vaccine.
3:28 pm
so am i. because i'm at risk for pneumococcal pneumonia. come on. i already got a pneumonia vaccine, but i'm asking about the added protection of prevnar 20®. if you're 19 or older with certain chronic conditions like asthma, diabetes, copd, or heart disease, or are 65 or older, you are at increased risk for pneumococcal pneumonia. prevnar 20® is approved in adults to help prevent infections from 20 strains of the bacteria that cause pneumococcal pneumonia. in just one dose. don't get prevnar 20® if you've had a severe allergic reaction to the vaccine or its ingredients. adults with weakened immune systems may have a lower response to the vaccine. the most common side effects were pain and swelling at the injection site, muscle pain, fatigue, headache, and joint pain. i want to be able to keep my plans. i don't want to risk ending up in the hospital with pneumococcal pneumonia. that's why i chose prevnar 20®. ask your doctor or pharmacist about the pfizer vaccine for pneumococcal pneumonia.
