key witness. hunter biden's sister-in-law and former girlfriend take the stand. the personal text messages and video revealed in court. and record-breaking heat. the searing triple-digit temperatures overtake the southwest, just too much for some to bear. when will they we relief? -- they see relief? good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning president biden and former president trump are stilling up their messaging in a push to draw clear distinction -- distinctions between one another. the president is overseas in france calling attention to the perils of bowing to bullies and threats to democracy. while out west, trump held his first campaign rally since his conviction, criticizing his trial and the border issues. cbs' jarred hill is joining us from new york with all the details. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, and that border is really shaping up to be an important issue, especially in some of these battleground states.

today president joe biden will deliver a major speech in france highlighting threats to democracy, a central theme during his visit to mark the 80th anniversary of d-day. >> we're living in a time when democracy is more at risk across the world than any point since the end of world war ii. >> reporter: a message biden is also hammering at home in this new campaign ad -- >> i will defend our democracy with every fiber of my being. >> reporter: yesterday in arizona, his opponent, former president donald trump, held his first campaign rally since his manhattan criminal conviction. >> i just went through a rigged trial in new york. >> reporter: trump holds a slight lead over biden in the battleground state, also a border state where immigration is a top issue. >> we will end joe biden's border nightmare. >> reporter: supporters of the former president who braved triple-digit temperatures to see him dismissed his criminal conviction. >> those are false charges. they're bogus. >> reporter: in an interview with abc news, president biden again pushed back on the criticism.

>> look, he got a fair trial. the jury spoke like they speak in all cases, and it should be respected. >> reporter: today trump is attending fundraisers in california as the race for his vp pick heats up. in interviews trump said he'll likely announce his choice at the republican national convention next month. so let's dig into these vp-stakes. cbs news has learned several folks have gotten vetting forms from the trump campaign, and four people in particular have been talked about the most internally. that's north dakota governor doug burgum and senators marco rubio, tim scott, and j.d. vance. but -- but the campaign is saying this does not mean that any of them will end up being chosen, anne-marie. >> keeping us guessing. jarred hill in new york, thank you. the extreme heat is setting unprecedented records across the southwest.

the temperature in las vegas spiked to 111 degrees yesterday marking the earliest on record. it's been that hot. dangerous heat is going to scorch most of the southwest for a third day in a row. and today's highs are expected to hit 110 in phoenix and soar well over 100 from central california to west texas. the searing heat continues over the weekend. highs saturday are forecast to reach 107 in las vegas and 103 in el paso. the latest outlook from the national weather service shows a likely chance of above-normal temperatures from the desert southwest to the northern plains june 12th through to june 16th. 11 migrants were hospitalized for heat exhaustion in texas in an apparent human smuggling operation. authorities say 26 migrants were found at a wooden shack outside san antonio yesterday. they were packed in a hidden compartment under a trailer for three hours without water as they were driven from the border. temperatures were close to 100 degrees, and seven people were arrested. and now to hunter biden's gun trial.

prosecutors have two witnesses left to call before the defense gets to lay out its case. yesterday the jury heard from a key witness, hallie biden, his brother's widow. she also had a relationship with hunter after her husband beau died. cbs' scott macfarlane was inside the courtroom for her emotional testimony. >> reporter: a star witness in a potentially pivotal piece of video evidence at the trial of president biden's son hunter. hallie biden, the widow of hunter's brother beau, testified this surveillance video shows her throwing away her brother-in-law's gun in a delaware parking lot on october 23rd, 2018, just 11 days after hunter biden bought the gun and just after hallie biden said she found it in hunter biden's car along with drug residue and drug paraphernalia. hallie biden said "i didn't want him to hurt himself or the kids to find it and hurt themselves. i was panicking." prosecutors are trying to prove hunter biden was addicted or using drugs at the time he bought the gun, lying on this

federal application. >> prosecutors will tell you that physical evidence doesn't lie, and this is about as powerful physical evidence as you can get linking his possession of that gun to his use of illegal drugs. >> reporter: hallie biden described taking up a romantic relationship with her brother-in-law about a year after her late husband, beau biden's, 2015 death telling the jury it was also hunter biden who introduced her to using crack-cocaine calling her drug use a terrible experience, i'm embarrassed and ashamed. prosecutors showed hallie biden the gun, and images of the satchel which she found and discarded it. hunter biden's attorney, abbe lowell, tried to show hallie biden didn't know what hunter was doing the week he bought the gun. you don't know if he was drinking, using, or either of the above, lowell asked. i don't know, she responded. hunter biden faces the prospects of a prison term if convicted of these three federal charges. in an interview, president biden ruled out a future pardon for his son. scott macfarlane, cbs news,

wilmington, delaware. a federal judge ordered former top trump aide steve bannon to report to prison by july 1st to serve a four-month sentence. last month a federal appeals panel upheld bannon's 2022 contempt of congress conviction. he defied a subpoena to testify and supply documents to the house committee investigating the january 6th capitol riot. he says he'll fight the order which could delay his surrender date. and conspiracy theorist alex jones has agreed to liquidate his assets to pay the $1.5 billion he owes to the families of victims of the 2012 sandy hook elementary school massacre. courts in two states found jones liable for defamation and ordered him to pay the money for repeatedly lying about the shooting being a hoax. the decision means jones will most likely will need to give up ownership of his company, info wars. overseas now, the israeli military is defending its strike on a united nations school in gaza.

boeing's new starliner space capsule docked successfully at the international space station, but not without a few issues. the capsule carrying two nasa astronauts was delayed from docking for about an hour yesterday to fix problems with five thrusters. and another helium leak was discovered after docking. the astronauts will spend about a week at the space station before returning to earth. a ban on juul e-cigarettes is reversed, and a disturbing discovery in a serial killings case. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "cbs new york" reports suspected gilgo beach serial killer rex heuermann was charged with murdering two more women, one in 1993, the other ten years later. the 60-year-old architect has now been charged with killing six women in new york's long island. in a court filing, prosecutors described finding a disturbing document on heuermann's computer that he allegedly used as a, quote, blueprint to plan his crimes. they say it included his

concerns about leaving behind forensic evidence, guidance for what to do with bodies, and notes on what he needed to do next time. he's pleaded not guilty. the "associated press" said amanda knox vowed to fight for the truth after an italian court convicted her again of slander. knox spent four years in prison for killing her roommate in italy in 2007 before the conviction was annulled in 2015. she was also convicted of slander for wrongly accusing a bar owner of murder. but a european court ruled her human rights were violated during police questioning when she accused the bar owner and ordered another trial on the slander charge. and the "wall street journal" says the fda rescinded its ban on juul labs' e-cigarettes. they were ordered to halt sales in 2022, but products were allowed to stay on the shelves before the ban. yesterday the fda rescinded the ban and put the products under scientific review. they said it's open to the possibility of giving juul's products federal clearance.
