>>cbs. news bay area. well, thanks for joining us. i'm ryan yamamoto in for elizabeth cook this afternoon. we look at whether oakland's newest baseball team is hitting it out of the park ahead of their 1st friday night home game on picks. plus, we're going to show you how the ballers are giving a nod to the past, but also looking toward the future will have that conversation. and just a few minutes but 1st a look at your news headlines. san francisco police just released this surveillance video of a person of interest in the case of a dog walker, who said he received racist threats. terrie williams reported those threats in april weeks before his home on grove street caught fire while his parents were at home. laser investigating this as a hate crime. fire crews in eastern contra costa battle of fire that tore through 50 acres of dry grass. this is out near deer valley road, just southwest of brentwood broke out before 11 a.m. more than 60 firefighters fought that fire, cal fire said it was 50%

contained about an hour and a half ago. no injuries reported or structures damaged. a military truck overturned on east bell 580. this afternoon. our chopper shows the truck on its side near 164. street and ashland. it's unclear what caused the crash or if anyone was hurt. governor gavin newsom joins state leaders and lgbt coupe. plus community advocates. at an event in the bay today, launching the freedom to marry ballot measure. the initiative would update our state constitution, which still says that game couples are not allowed to marry, even though same ... marriages have been happening in california for 2 decades. berkeley's mayor, speaking out today in support of the state supreme court decision to allow uc berkeley to build student housing at people's park. the mayor, calling it a win for desperately needed campus housing. yesterday, the court threw out a lawsuit that puts a hold on plans to build housing for about 1100 students. in san francisco volunteers put

covering most of the coast, but coming over much of the city and extending towards oakland, it's going to be a gray, relatively windy. a game at raymond a park for the ballers tonight, but you're going to feel this anywhere along the immediate bay shore stronger winds. it's going to be a little bit of a wind chill factor, and it'll feel cool as a result. this is the start of a trend that will really bring our numbers down for the weekend. even though it's going to be plenty of sunshine in the afternoon. what happens is we start to see higher clouds show up on saturday and sunday. in addition to the marine layer, and that now starts to introduce a more widespread cooling trend. look at it in the 70 forecast. this year's the micro climate for the inland east bay. you're still mid 80s today as we saw in our last visit, but over the weekend, you do cool down to right around 80 the clouds here. that's not the marine layer. these are higher clouds that are going to be filtering over much of the bay from a weak weather system to our north that will help bring these numbers down, but that system is gone by next week, and then we get back here tuesday and wednesday and we started another warmup. now

this is nothing like the warmup of the middle part of this this week where we were looking at temperatures. pretty much getting 200 inland. we're not going to be that warm, but we do have a bit of a warmup coming our way. to go to the mid 90s and the bay shows you the same pattern. coolest over the weekend. increasing clouds. we know we'll have the marine layer around each morning now in the immediate bay higher clouds as well for the weekend and then you can see what happens back here. kind of clear out most of that, and we warm back up again. not terribly so, but still noticeably. call >>it a rebirth. call it a revival. >>these >>are the >>ballers. a new pro >>baseball >>team. build >>biopic. oakland >>ballers. let's go 4. oakland we've all seen it in the face of baseball in oakland is changing, while the a's make their way out the ballers also known as the bees are looking

oakland baseball. history. when we 1st came up with the idea told us some of our friends and you know they laugh, they laughed. we got we got some laughs. it all started in high school when paul a baseball fanatic. moved to oakland from chicago, not knowing a single soul. but it was during those games watching the a's that he met brian to 2 hit it off its amazing the connections that you make through sports through baseball. like you keep them for life. affectionately called the bees ballers are right now a whole other league literally. they'll be playing ball in the independent. pioneer lee mlb. partner based in the mountain west. and since the league requires and even number of teams ready brian also created the yolo high wheelers based in davis. california. but if you think owning 2 teams is all fun and games wait until they play

each other. i think both teams really want to win. we met paul in brian at uc davis as the ballers and high wheelers played a friendly match up. who are you rooting for? okay? they say both teams will eventually be open to fan ownership. now. they hope their team step up to the plate. and hit it out of the park. yeah. >>the ballers inaugural home opener was the 1st pro game at raymond a feel them more than 100 years. the base lost tuesday night to the high wheelers, then bounce back for a win on wednesday in a win last night in a home run derby. the 2 teams face off again tonight you can watch that game on picks, plus 44 cable 12 starting at 630 tonight. we're going to bring you all the friday night home games through the end of august. and the bees maybe just starting their time every monday park but some sports stars have already made their mark their coming up the

raymond field. standing here i feel a special bond with baseball. rebased. baseball historian in giants postgame announcer. so so talented trio of outfielders from oakland's mcclymont high put raymond on the map. vta pinson. curt flood and frank robinson. amazingly. some of those players turned out to be some of the best players in major league history. robinson won 2 world series with the orioles in 66 and 70. was inducted into the baseball hall of fame flood is best known as the father of free agency for his supreme court battle against major league baseball. after he was traded late in his career to the phillies. don't want to go to the phillies. you can't do that. i'm not a slave. i'm not indentured. yes, i have a contract with doesn't mean i'm with you for life. so he protested. activism may have been watered by the efforts of an earlier generation. during

the second world war, reminding field was also home to the 826. boilermakers. a group of african american ballplayers who worked in the nearby naval shipyards. fighting both racism. in baseball. and racism. in their unemployment. cushing is a retired historian and archivist. he says the park's rich history is also fertile ground for the future. during world war 2 ii. this was a pivotal period. in a pivotal spot. for transformation and american society, so it's wonderful to see this revitalization. rebuild it and they will come both lincoln and laurie say they're glad to see the park storied history preserved. this diamond in the roughest part of town. given another chance. to shine. this field represents when you step on it. you step on legacy when you step on this field, and that's what i feel honestly in

my heart today. >>now with a few home gains under their belt we wanted to check in with the bowlers co founders on what it's been like so far, spoke with paul friedman earlier today and asked him about that very 1st night in front of the oakland crowd. >>the 1st night was magical. it was absolutely magical. you know, we put this ballpark together in partnership with the city of oakland and the neighborhood and just 3 months >>and >>that yeah. and we were scrambling very last minute to get all things we needed to done. it was a little bit nervous, anxious before we open, but then it opened. it was a sellout crowd, and it was that environment and that experience that makes oakland sports so great. it was just a really magical night. opening night was huge. what do you expect for the 1st home? opener weekend? yeah, i think we're it's going to be a great opener weekend, you know. tonight. we got the reverse boycott and we got the ace. i think fans are trying to decide where to go. but we got a lot of people showing up tonight. and we're going to have a lot of people showing up for the weekend. what's been amazing is just the fan experience like people are

saying that this is just a more fun version community kind of experience, but with a modern field, we had a knockout round yesterday we had a home run derby decided to i so it's going to be a lot of people here, and it's gonna be a lot of fun surprises so far. just a surprise that you know of how receptive people have been. we put a baseball park right next to a lot of houses. and a lot of neighbors and so far you know the response has >>been >>enthusiastically supportive. people have have have really been thanking us for coming out here and we couldn't have done it really without the partnership of the neighbors and their support is really important to us going forward. and what are you most looking forward to? as the season rolls along at some, i'm m put this together. but just continue to build on what we started. i mean, you know, we've said this before. this is this is you know we're at the very beginning of something here, the very beginning and and we're a small community team, but our ambitions are very large. we want to we will. want to build something that oakland could be proud of.

rising from the ashes. san francis local brewing couple was 1 of of the 1st craft brewery. and the bay. area. to make a pride beer. but after a fire in 2022 the owners who don't know if the beer would ever return that fire started upstairs in their historic buildings south of market destroying the brewery on the 1st floor. now the effort to rebuild the brand includes a drive to the east bay. we're twice a weekly co owner bets reagan long right there, travels the richmond contracting with east brothers
