poll. what caltrans new fleet means for the environment and when that will hit the tracks. thanks for joining us this sunday afternoon, i'm brian hackney. >> i'm andrea nakano. in half an hour, the horses will race around golden gate field for the last time. >> after more than 80 years, the racetrack is shutting down for good. thousands packed the venue to watch an end of an era for horse racing in the bay area and it used to be a huge deal deal. da lin has more on the final deal. >> reporter: ladies and gentlemen, the iconic trumpet call one last time. eight races with 54 horses on sunday. long-time race fan, dennis clay, is sad to see it go. >> i wanted to be a part of history on the last day to say i was here for golden gate

field, like the last day at bay meadows. >> reporter: dennis has been coming here for over 40 years. he does mostly small bets. no more than $30 to $40. >> i lost more than i won, but i still enjoy coming. >> reporter: what keeps him coming back is the adrenaline. >> that experience of saying yes, i got the winner by a nose. >> an end of an era. after 83 years, we're going to miss everybody. >> reporter: the general manager of golden gate field says horse racing is a declining sport and business. it means fewer people at the track. and most of those loyal customers are older people. >> there are days when we've had thousands here. we used to run dollar days that were very popular after the pandemic. it was very difficult to get that going again. >> reporter: thousands showed up for the final day. a long line of people trying to get in. carol bettis and her husband came here from nevada to say farewell.

>> i hate to see it go, but i know it's progress. time moves on. but this is truly our farewell. i can tell you when i leave, i probably will have tears in my eyes. >> reporter: her parents brought her here often when she was a little girl. she has had a lot of great memories. >> i just love this track. >> reporter: the venue has 140 acres on albany and berkeley, amazing views of the bay and this prime piece of real estate. no plans as of now, but they believe that will be a mixture of park space and housing. >> to get affordable housing here. that will be the ideal situation. >> the last racetrack closed in the bay area before golden gate field was bay meadows back in 2008. that track demolished to make room for housing in san mateo. golden gate field has a grim history of horse deaths over the years. 18 horses died

at the facility gossans the racetrack owners announced the closure last year. the only remaining racetracks are all in southern california. del mar, orange county. and santa anita raceway in los angeles and those are the last racetracks that we have in the entire state now that golden gate fields has shut down or will shut down tonight for the final time. andria? >> cars set on fire, lasers, fireworks. the scene in the middle of san francisco's embarcadero last night. this is right under some muni lines. we've reached out to the city to see if the lines were damaged, but have not heard back. there was a second side show in the city near valencia and cesar chavez. in oakland, activity on grand lake avenue near lake merritt stopped traffic at the intersection just outside the grand lake theater. no word on if any arrests were made there. in fact a man is being

detained at the hospital and booked into jail later this week after a fight left one person dead, several others with stab wounds at lake berryeesa on saturday. it happened around 5:00 yesterday evening at oak shore area. one person was shot and killed. a number of others were stabbed. the incident is under investigation. a suspect who barricaded himself inside an apartment in san jose is now in custody after jumping out of a bedroom window. this happened south of blossom hill road near warren drive. police say the suspect allegedly shot a gun and threw items at the officers from an apartment window. a suspect connected to a 2022 mass shooting in the state capital who died in custody early saturday morning has been identified as smiley martin. one of three suspects who was charged in a sacramento nightclub shooting that left six people dead and 12 wounded. county coroner's office is looking into the cause of death. the chp says a person died

after being hit by a tesla on highway 242 in concord early this morning. it happened south of clayton road. officers say a tesla driving the fast lane hit a pedestrian in the roadway. the driver who was not injured stayed at the scene to cooperate with police. now to politics. a new cbs news poll shows a tightening race. 49% of likely voters across the country favor biden. 50% will vote for former president trump. but in battleground states, 50% will favor biden with 49% favoring trump. 55% of likely voters say trump's recent conviction is not a factor in their vote. 17% say it is a minor factor. >> i think that they just persecuted an innocent man, and i don't think it's fair. >> when voters were asked what matters most, 81% said the

economy. inflation coming in a close second. that was followed by the state of democracy and crime. 56% said the u.s.-mexico border, only 28% pointed to mr. trump's conviction. the polls show voters 65 and older and caucasians without a college degree are more likely to vote for former president trump. nearly all republicans, 94% will vote for mr. trump. as for biden supporters, 54% say their opposition to donald trump is fueling their vote. only 27% say they are happy with president biden's term in office. today on face the nation, senator chris kohns talked about the difference between the two candidates. >> former president trump tried to use gimmicks like building a border wall, and now threatening to federalize the national guard and use it to deport tens of millions of people already here in the united states. the difference

that is the latest. a live view from mount diablo. the grass fire about ten acres. as soon as we learn more, we'll let you know. in other news, no caltrains service in the bay area and that is the story for years. a result of their big switch from diesel to electric. and max darrow has the story. >> reporter: the san francisco caltrains station was expectedly quiet on sunday as regular riders seem to get the memo there would be no weekend service throughout just about the entire corridor from san francisco to san jose. the reason, the final tests of caltrains new electric fleet. the spokesperson, dan lieberman. >> this is the first test of them running simultaneously to make sure the power flow of the trains are working properly and everyone else is in good working order. >> reporter: nearing the finish line of the electrification project that broke ground on in 2017. >> there is a light at the end

of the tunnel, launching our new service. this is really modernizing the system and bringing in these gorgeous new trains that are cleaner, greener, they are going to move more people faster. >> reporter: the first of its kind project in north america will involve transitioning diesel trains and infrastructure to the electrified system. and lieberman says the new system will reduce the emissions, improve the air quality, and relieve some traffic congestions as well. >> once we electrify, it will be the equivalent of taking those cars off the road every year. we do love the f-40s, they have done their job for a good long time. it's time to step into the future and give silicon valley the transit system they really deserve. >> reporter: lieberman says the project is on schedule with a target launch date of september 21. >> all right, let's go over to first alert meteorologist darren peck with more on the weather. and we just kind of showed that fire in pittsburg with the wind blowing in the

easterly direction. what do you know about the winds out there, darren? >> reporter: they are typical for today, which means they'll be moving at a 20 to 25 miles an hour wind speed. that's how strong the gusts are. we were looking at that a moment ago. two things that would stand out from looking at the smoke here. remember this is our camera that we are looking out towards pittsburg. you can clearly see the momentum on this. oftentimes you can tell so much about the conditions by watching the plume of smoke. if this was a fairly calm day, you would see it rising almost directly up. that's really what the smoke wants to do. but it's getting caught in a 20 to 25 miles an hour wind that's blowing from the bay and blowing inland. this is that huge air conditioner that we all live with. on the one hand, this is such a developing system. all we could say is there's a strong westerly flow to move that smoke in the lower levels of the atmosphere. we're not getting a clear picture, but you can tell there's a

decent amount of smoke coming off of this as this has become a grass fire. the grasses have all cured around the bay. you can see how brown they are here. that's a time lapse of the last 15 minutes. by the way, there are those winds. the cameras sit on mount diablo right there, looking right there as you could see the gust. always a little gustier out there. we will keep you posted on that as information comes in. let's talk about the weather. a nice warm up coming your way. it will be hot again by tuesday. so today was pretty much right on the mark for average for daytime highs. as we take a look at the forecast for tuesday, the heat advisory will go into effect at 11:00 in the morning, and stays in effect until 8:00 at night. it doesn't necessarily include the city, peninsula, or the east bay shore. let's put some numbers on this. the comparison that we're going to do before i show you tuesday's numbers, where it will be tomorrow because you do start to step up and then we'll do the

comparison. i'll show you the numbers right after this for monday in the 80s in theout bay. you'll be in the 80s. oakland, you're 73. san francisco, you'll be in the upper 60s tomorrow. so it had is warmer. monday is about 10 degrees warmer today, in fact, but let's push this back out to the wide view because i will switch these numbers now. we'll say good-bye to the monday forecast. i want you to see the numbers that will matter most. these are now tuesday. so you can see where santa rosa is. 3 degrees shy of 100. so i think the north bay valleys, they will feel this more than most locations, but just on the technicality. everybody's got a warm up coming. san francisco, your numbers will climb into the mid-70s. look at the numbers in the tri-valley. you will be near 100 for concord and antioch and san jose. you're going 90 degrees for the daytime highs. that's the peak. let's see how long it will last. it's like a quick up to get us to the

monday and then tuesday jump. the heat advisory expires on wednesday. when you look at the seven-day forecast for our micro climate. you'll see on wednesday why that will be. a nice break. thursday feels great. then yeah, there's another warmup as we would get towards next weekend. we'll see the temperatures climb again. we'll give that more time to play out in the forecast. we really just want to draw your attention to tuesday, national weather service, already throwing in the tunnel on this one and said all right, you need to have that heat advisory there even though in the bay, it's not all that warm. all right, now max, over to you. >> thanks. sonoma is known for their wine, 53 weekends out of the year. but not when nascar comes to town. our vern glenn was at the save mart 350 to see who would be celebrating with merlot. >> reporter: you've got to respect this track in sonoma. you don't beat it, you survive it. and 38 of the best stock car drivers can attest the

sonoma raceway, lived up to the billing. >> drivers, start your engines. >> reporter: lap 10 looked like highway 37 before the race with things coming to a standstill. lap 40, austin cindric spun out and hit the wall. the car got caught up in it, but managed to get out okay and earn a second place finish. martin truex jr., last year's winner took the lead with nine laps to go, but it was quickly passed by kyle larson and ended up the day 27th. there was no looking back for the elk grove native. he took the checkered flag for his second career win in sonoma. >> you did it in 2021. how much as a northern california guy has got to mean a little bit more here? >> yeah, always when you could win at your home track, it will mean something. so yeah, the guy i look up to a lot with

local californian who has won five times here. i would love to get to match him some day or surpass him potentially, but it's tough. we will see. i know it's a great team. and i have extra motivation any time i come home. >> the next stop, iowa on father's day. matt? >> all right, thanks, vern. to baseball, giants started the week in midst of their longest losing streak. today they would have a chance to end it with the sweep of the defending champs. the texas manager and the old friend is hoping that sweep wasn't in the cards for his squad. the bottom of the one, rangers with the bases loaded. delivers a two out single up the middle. scores the game first two runs. the next inning, now 3-0. the native, down the left field line for a two run homer. and texas will go on to win 7-2.

snaps san francisco's three-game winning streak. giants are two games below .500. they host houston on monday. over in oakland, the former a's, aces, tim hudson, mark moller, back at the coliseum. oakland trailing toronto 2-1 in the seventh. toro bloops one scoring two runs to give them the lead. but the blue jays tied the game and forced extras. the top ten, isiah kiner-falefa with the bases loaded. doubles into left center and all three came around to score. kiner-falefa would take two out of three in this series. men's final of the french open, carlos alcaraz against -- oh, we're in golf now. that's on me, apology. statue of jack nicklaus there and trailing scottie scheffler by one. and

burning in pittsburg. this is a live look as you can see large plumes of smoke near the hills where it broke out just before 5:00. it first started as a building fire on john henry johnson parkway. the address they give to their dream courts where they built that sports complex, eight acres have burned where we will get you more information as they become available. >> a whole lot of mars. they have no idea what it leads to, but they would like to know what the bottom of it will be like and years ago, where they think that likely it's near the side of the old volcano and the opening door lava too. if we ever make it there, they will need a place to shelter,

we'll take you back out to the breaking news in the east bay where it started as a commercial building in pittsburg. then it grew to a wild fire behind it. they're telling us it's about ten acres, but they're doing heavy on the air attack or a retardant drop just a few seconds ago and they were able to put out the flames for now. it's a ten acre vegetation fire that started at a commercial building. one last thing to tell you about. we might be a step
