nation's most popular tourist destinations. and the running of the bull. a rodeo bull hops a fence and takes off running. the scare, the injuries, and how it was finally captured. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the joy and celebration in israel of that daring daytime rescue mission is giving way to the realities of war. now in its ninth month. hamas is calling it the bloodiest day of the war. israel released new video they say shows troops escorting the hostages to a waiting helicopter while coming under heavy fire. this was the moment 27-year-old andrey kozlov was reunited with her mom yesterday after she arrived in russia. secretary of state antony blinken is on his way back to th middle east right now as a proposed cease-fire and hostage deal hangs in the balance. it comes as prime minister netanyahu's wartime government takes a hit with opposition leader benny gantz and another member resigning.

cbs' naomi ruchim joins us now with the latest developments on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. for these families it has been eight months of anguish, not knowing if their loved ones were still alive or if they would ever see them again. while their rescues were met with celebration, the region is still no closer to a deal for peace. and that sets the stage for secretary of state antony blinken's visit to the region today. after more than 245 days of prayer, the families of four israeli hostages kidnapped to gaza by hamas on october 7th finally embraced their loved ones. [ speaking in a global language ] >> reporter: 26-year-old noa argamani, who was taken from the nova music festival during the attack, returned home on her father's birthday. after the mission, the rescued hostages and their families pleaded for the safe return of the hostages remaining in gaza.

>> there are still 120 hostages in gaza, and we want a deal now. we want them to come back home as soon as possible. >> reporter: the operation to free the hostages left an israeli commando dead after the israeli military says its forces came under heavy fire during the daytime mission. according to hamas, more than 270 palestinians were also killed. the group does not differentiate between civilian and militant casualties. in another setback for the civilians of gaza, amid safety concerns, the u.n. world food program has paused distribution of humanitarian aid from an american-built pier in the territory. secretary of state antony blinken returns to the middle east today with no firm response on a cease-fire since the white house made a proposal ten days ago. secretary blinken's trip will include visits to egypt, israel,

jordan, and qatar. during his visit he will ask leadership to urge hamas to accept the proposed cease-fire on the table which calls for the release of more hostages and a temporary pause in the fighting. the militant group has yet to respond to that deal. >> thank you so much. we are expecting to find out today if hunter biden will testify in his own defense at his federal gun trial in delaware. prosecutors rested their case on friday. then the defense called biden's oldest daughter, naomi, who talked about visiting her father in rehab. closing arguments could take place today depending on whether hunter biden takes the stand, and the case could go to the jury. biden has pleaded not guilty to three felony charges. and former president donald trump is scheduled to be interviewed by his new york probation officer today. it will take place virtually with trump at his home in mar-a-lago. it's a required step before his jury sentencing in his criminal new york trial.

meanwhile, president biden is back in the u.s. from his five-day visit to france. he ended the trip by paying respects to american soldiers killed in world war i, a stop trump skilled six years earlier. cbs' skyler henry reports. >> reporter: without naming his predecessor, president biden jabbed at former president trump during a wreath-laying ceremony at a world war i cemetery in france. >> i think it is a measure of a country's support for democratic values that they honor those who have risked their lives and lost their lives. the idea that i'd come to normandy and not make a short trip here to pay tribute, it's the same story -- think about it. america showed up. >> reporter: the former president skipped that same cemetery during a trip to france in 2018 and reportedly afterwards called those who were buried there, quote, losers and suckers. in las vegas, trump said that never happened. >> for me to say suckers and

losers about people that died in world war i in front of military people -- it's not a possibility you could say a thing like that. >> reporter: sunday was trump's first official campaign rally during a west coast swing where he saw thunderous crowds since being found guilty in the so-called hush-money trial in new york. cbs news confirms he's scheduled to meet via zoom with his probation officer on monday from his mar-a-lago home. likely voters say that guilty verdict pales in comparison to other issues like the economy, inflation, and the border. >> if joe biden truly wanted to sign an executive order to stop the invasion right now, all he needs to do is say "i hereby immediately reinstate every single border policy of a gentleman named donald j. trump." >> reporter: new cbs news polling out sunday shows the likely rematch between biden and trump neck and neck, with the former president ahead by 1% nationally and president biden ahead by 1% in the battleground states.

as for president biden, he will also make a trip out west for a star-studded event in los angeles next saturday, but not before that g7 trip to italy. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. more than 20 million people in the southwest are under heat alerts for a renewed surge of triple-digit temperatures. highs today will reach 104 in phoenix, 97 in sacramento. but it only gets hotter in the days ahead. sacramento's temperature will climb above 100 degrees tomorrow. wednesday, a scorching 110 is forecast for las vegas and phoenix. and you may have noticed a string of severe storms and tornadoes that decimated communities across the country in recent months. more than 500 have been spotted in the u.s. since april. and there's new evidence that tornado alley may be expanding beyond the midwest. cbs' dave malkoff explains.

>> reporter: april 2nd, 2024, an ef1 tornado sliced the roof off a funeral home in sunbright, tennessee. noah and lexi hamby were next door outside. >> right here is when it hit us. >> reporter: he was carrying their 4-year-old. she had their baby in her arms. >> i mean, it literally swooped me up off my feet with the baby in my hands. he had me by the hood of my jacket and was choking me. >> yeah. if she wasn't wearing a hoodie she'd be gone. >> reporter: they were trying to find a basement to take cover in a part of the country that's not used to tornadoes. the most likely place in the world for a tornado is right here in tornado alley. in fact, look at the 1950s, you can see a clear line right through the center of the country. if you fast forward to the 2010s, tornadoes don't necessarily stay in their alley anymore. dr. timothy coleman wrote a study released in april after researching tornado locations dating back to the '50s.

>> the tornado alley now in the united states in terms of the maximum area for tornadoes is an area from the southeastern u.s., parts of mississippi and alabama, up into tennessee, kentucky, parts of southern indiana and illinois. >> reporter: meteorologists have not settled on a definitive reason for this change, but the shift can be dangerous. >> a lot of that increase in the east has been at night and in the winter when people don't expect tornadoes and may not be as ready for them. >> we really about lost our lives. >> reporter: as the hambys tried to get to they safe place, they found their neighbor, kevin daniels, just in time. >> he grabbed her, and then i grabbed him, and they both had a baby in their arms, and i drug everybody out. >> that was me and my daughter. >> reporter: learning what so many in tornado alley were taught -- that seconds count. >> two seconds, me and her would be gone, absolutely. >> reporter: dave malkoff, cbs news, in sunbright, tennessee.

"the new york times" reports far-right nationalists and anti-immigrant parties made major gains in european union parliamentary elections. voters in 27 countries went to the polls.

centrist political groups will still keep a clear majority in the 720-seat eu parliament, but far-right parties made major gains in france and germany. and because of his party's defeat, french president emmanuel macron announced he's dissolving the country's national assembly and calling for new legislative elections in the coming weeks. "the columbus dispatch" says at least 43 horses were killed and a man was burned in an ohio barn fire. saturday's fire destroyed a 60,000 square-foot barn in logan county, 70 miles northeast of columbus. the barn was used by two performance horse businesses. the operator of one of the businesses suffered second-degree burns to his arms and back and head when he reportedly rushed back in to try and free the horses. and cnn says florida officials are urging beachgoers to remain cautious after three people were injured in two separate shark attacks. it happened friday, four miles apart, along the florida panhandle.
