new video and new details about what it took to bring four hostages home and why it almost failed. americans attacked in china. four college professors stabbed in a public park. the latest on the investigation. first, hunter biden's fate in the hands of a jury. will they accept his defense or find him guilty of illegally lying on a gun application. well, good morning and good captioning funded by cbs morning and good to be with you. to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. all eyes on a delaware courtroom today as jury deliberations resume in the first criminal trial of a son of a sitting president. hunter biden's personal life and struggle with addiction lay bare for the world to see. the question, did he knowingly lie about his gun use on a gun application nearly six years ago. his team says no. cbs's ■jarred hill joins usnow with the latest developments on the case. jarred, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie.

in their closing, prosecutors argue their arguments were ugly when they brought in hucnter's ex-wife and girlfriend to testify and for the jury to decide if there's enough to convict. hunter biden to reporters monday with his fate now in the hands of a delawar jury. he's charged with three felony counts of illegally possessing a gun while being a drug user and making false statements about his drug use when he bought the gun in october 2018. >> the standard here is intent. hunter biden had to intentionally lie on the form. he had to intentionally be in possession of the gun while being a drug user. >> reporter: the six men and six women of the jury deliberated for about an hour after closing arguments yesterday. in their final plea to jurors, prosecutors told them to ignore the people who've attended the trial as first lady jill biden looked on.

>> the mannerisms of the defendant, who was there to support them, it can be something that sticks in the jurors' minds. >> reporter: hunter biden didn't take the stand during the trial, but prosecutors used his own voice from texts to loved ones. in one text two days after buying the gun, hunter told his brother's widow halle, who he'd had a romantic relationship with, that he was, quote, sleeping on a car, smoking crack. the defense shouted back this was a lie told by hunter as an excuse to avoid seeing her. also hunter considered himself in recovery and no longer a drug user when he filled out the form and bought the firearm. if convicted hunter biden faces up to 25 years in prison. just last week president biden said that he would not pardon his son if he is convicted. anne-marie, as we've seen president biden really working here to show a clear separation between himself and his justice department. >> right. but he consistently says that he does love his son, but you're

right. he does not want to intervene. jarrett hill in new york, thank you very much. >> thank you. so breaking overnight, four israeli soldiers were killed in an explosion in the southern gazan city of rafah. this as new details emerge about israel's daring hostage rescue and how it almost fell apart as international pressure builds on hamas to accept the cease-fire and the hostage release proposal laid out by president biden. secretary of state antony blinken is in israel this morning meeting with leaders there to push for the cease-fire deal. the u.n. security council approved the cease-fire plan with hamas welcoming the resolution, saying it is ready to cooperate with remediators. and the doctor overseeing the hostages said they were beaten regularly and the aid months in captivity left a significant mark on their health. cbs's chris livesay with more on the dramatic new video and details of that rescue mission.

>> reporter: new footage shows the moments israeli commandos stormed the apartment building holding the three male hostages. they call out their names. we came here to rescue you, they respond, before the crack of gunfire to cover their harrowing escape. it was a rescue operation of the highest stakes, and it nearly failed. weeks of rehearsing on mockups had prepared these elite forces to move in broad day light says a former special ops commander. >> you go undercover, the cars, the dress, whatever they require. >> reporter: at the same time those men were being freed in one building, noa argamani was being rescued 200 yards away in in another. they were code named diamonds. the code message was relayed over the radio, we have the diamonds in our hands. >> you kill the guards and then

an oregon man's dog is being called a hero after running four miles to get help for his stranded owner. police say brandon garrett drove off an embankment intoravine ir this month with his four dogs in the vehicle. one of the dogs ran back to the man's camp to alert people something was wrong. the next day he was hoisted out in a rescue basket. officials did not release any details about his condition. all the dogs were found alive. a baltimore shipping channel is open for business, and an investigation into a miami apartment fire. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. >p "the miami herald" a mmanpman who police say st fr fip fire was taken . dozens of people had to be rescued from the building yesterday, some from their balconies. more than 40 were displaced. three firefighters were taken to the hospital with heat exhaustion. when police and firefighters arrived, they found a man who

"the oregonian" says a oregon father was sentenced to two years in prison for drugging his daughter's 12-year-old friends at a sleepover last summer. michael mayden pleaded guilty yesterday to three felony counts. he admitted spiking smoothies with a prescription sedative because he wanted the girls to go to bed. two girls drank the smoothies and blacked out. the man's daughter also tested positive for the drug. and "the baltimore sun" says tthep the port of baltimor ship p more more than two colcollap collapse of the key bridge. part of the bridge collapsed in march when a cargo ship lost power and crashed into it. six construction workers on that bridge were killed. crews spent weeks removing 50,000 tons of debris from the fallen bridge that was partially blocking the channel. officials hope to rebuild the
