out. i had to run for my life at 6 years old. >> the what ifs kind of spoil a lot of precious moments. you always remember that they're not there. >> a bittersweet graduation. the kids who survived the sandy hook school massacre are now grown up and getting their high school diploma. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. hunter biden is now the first son of a sitting u.s. president to be convicted of a crime. the jury finding him guilty of three federal charges stemming from a lie about his drug use when he purchased a gun nearly six years ago. president biden changed his schedule after the verdict to be by hunter's side in delaware before heading overseas. cbs' jarred hill is joining us with more on the verdict and the reaction. >> yeah. so most -- immediately we're looking at the sentencing here for hunter biden.

taking you back to all of this, the jury's verdict came in just after three or so hours of deliberation convicting hunter biden in this gun case. now we're hearing from one of those jurors about their process. for the first time since his son's conviction, president joe biden and hunter seen embracing tuesday. a delaware jury found hunter biden guilty all three felony counts of making false statements about using drugs wen purchasing a gun and unlawfully possessing that gun while addicted to drugs in october of 2018. after the verdict, cbs news' weijia jiang spoke to one of the jurors. he asked to remain anonymous. >> we treated it like any other case. it wasn't about hunter biden, it wasn't about his family. it wasn't politically motivated. it was what he did, the biggest thing that he did was lied about not being a drug addict and not using cocaine and buying a gun. >> reporter: hunter biden's defense team tried to argue that at the time that he purchased

the gun hunter believed he was in recovery and not addicted to drugs. but the prosecution used hunter's own words from his memoir describing his addiction to crack-cocaine to dispute those claims. >> this case was not just about addiction. this case was about the illegal choices the defendant made while in the throes of addiction. >> reporter: hunter left the courtroom holding hands with first lady jill biden and his wife melissa. in a statement he thanked his family for their support. president biden scrambling his schedule last minute to be with his son released his own statement reiterating that he will accept the outcome of the case, vowing to respect the process as hunter considers an appeal. so hunter biden could face 25 years in prison. sentencing will happen in the fall. he's set to go on trial in september, as well, on tax charges. >> you know, you cannot ignore the politics surrounding this whole thing, right? he is the son of a president. how are lawmakers reacting? >> on one hand we're seeing democrats saying this was the

justice system at work. but on the flip side republicans have continued to say there is a double standard, saying this on social media as well as in some of their tv appearances. in fact, you got former president trump here, his campaign is putting out a statement about all of this saying that this is a double standard, also, again, remember this comes just about two or so weeks after former president trump's own conviction in his case. they're saying this is a distraction, trying to pivot to what they're calling real crimes of the biden family trying to circle all of this back to president biden because, again, he's the one that's going to be on the ballot in november. >> he certainly is. thank you very much. >> thank you. well, onto the weather now and some severe weather is going to make for a wet and warm wednesday in different parts of the country. flood watches are in effect across southern florida. storms could bring a month's worth of rain in a matter of days. streets were flooded throughout florida yesterday trapping vehicles and stranding drivers.

close to 1,000 flights were delayed or canceled at airports in miami and fort lauderdale. and it is a different story out in the southwest. millions of people in the southwest, they're bracing for more triple-digit temperatures today. there are excessive heat warnings and advisories stretching from california to western texas, and it could hit 112 degrees today in phoenix, 109 in las vegas. it comes after days of record-breaking temperatures throughout the region last week. hamas says it's ready to reach a deal to stop the war with israel, but the terror group is stopping short of accepting a truce proposal laid out by president biden nearly two weeks ago and is suggesting amendments. a senior israeli official says hamas' counterproposal amounts to a rejection of the offer. cbs' chris livesay has the latest developments from tel aviv. >> reporter: in its official response, hamas is continuing to insist israel withdraw from gaza completely in order to release any remaining hostages.

a potential blow to the u.s.-backed deal. >> everyone has said yes except for hamas, and if hamas doesn't say yes, then this is clearly on them. >> reporter: this after that dramatic hostage rescue over the weekend that dealt a stinging blow to their hamas captors and the innocent civilians surrounding them. in nuseirat, 300 were dead, a number israel disputes. our team in gaza was at a hospital as the wounded piled in. this resident questioning how israel could kill hundreds of people in the name of freeing hostages. the outrage in gaza so intense some are speaking out against hamas publicly. [ speaking in a global language ] "we have filthy leadership," cries this doctor. "they made our bloodshed normal. may god curse them."

prolonging such agony and fighting is part of the hamas game plan to demonize israel internationally according to a "wall street journal" report. in a message between hamas officials, the leader of hamas in gaza said, "we have the israelis right where we want them." chris livesay, cbs news, tel aviv. now to the arrests of eight suspected terrorists with possible ties to isis here in the u.s. authorities say they came in through the southern border last year. cbs' erroll barnett reports. >> reporter: eight individuals, all from the central asian country of tajikistan, were arrested in los angeles, new york, and philadelphia. they entered the united states this year, and in 2023 crossing the mexican border. they were vetted and allowed to remain in the country. cbs news has learned further investigation uncovered the men had possible ties to isis-k, the

terror group which claimed responsibility for an attack at a moscow concert hall that killed more than 140 people earlier this year. the fbi used a wiretap to track the men, and sources say what they discovered led authorities to quickly arrest them on immigration charges. >> typically bringing individuals in on immigration-related charges is the quickest and easiest way to take individuals back into custody, but that does not rule out additional terrorism-related charges further down the road. >> reporter: fbi director christopher wray warned earlier this year of a heightened threat level with thousands of people crossing the southern border. >> our most immediate concern has been that individuals or small groups will draw some kind of twisted inspiration from the events in the middle east to carry out attacks here at home. >> reporter: sources tell cbs news that while authorities moved swiftly to detain these men, there was no evidence of an

active plot. they remain in i.c.e. custody pending extradition. erroll barnett, cbs news, new york. well, it will be a day of mixed emotions in newtown, connecticut, as dozens of survivors of the sandy hook elementary school massacre graduate from high school. 60 of the more than 300 graduates at newtown high school were members of the first grade class when a gunman killed 20 children and six educators 2012. the victims will be honored during the graduation ceremony. >> i think we can't forget about that there is a whole chunk of our class missing, and so going into graduation we all have very mixed emotions. trying to be excited for ourselves and this accomplishment that we've worked so hard for, but also those who aren't able to share it with us who should have been able to. >> fresh start in a way and getting -- not getting away from newtown, but being able to go somewhere where life isn't defined by a single tragedy from 12 years ago.

hijacked with 17 people on board. police say they responded yesterday to a report of an armed man holding people hostage on the bus. when the man forced the driver to speed away during a wild miles long rush hour chase, the bus struck several vehicles. when the bus was finally stopped, police found a man on board who had been fatally shot. cbs atlanta says four people including the suspected gunmen were shot at a downtown peachtree center mall. the mayor said it happened in the mall's food court after a fight between two people. one man and two women were shot before an off-duty police officer working security at the mall shot the suspect. they're all expected to survive. police say the gunman was a convicted felon who had been arrested nearly a dozen times. and cnn says a 55-year-old man was arrested in the stabbing of four american teachers in china. the teachers from iowa's cornell college were attacked monday. police say the suspect bumped
