[applause] i grew up in a house surrounded by cornfields in lancaster county pennsylvania. i was raised by my parents, jim and julie groff, and my brother, david, and the three of them are sitting right there. [applause] thank you for letting me dress up like mary poppins when i was three. thank you for letting me act out scenes from "i love lucy" on my tenth birthday. thank you for always allowing my freak flag to fly without ever making me feel weird about it. even if they didn't always understand me, my family knew the life saving power of fanning the flame of a young person's passions without judgment. [applause] i walk through life with an open heart because you let me know that i could. thank you. i love you. thank you to all of my teachers back in pennsylvania, especially sue fisher, who told me i could do this for a living.

i moved to new york exactly 20 years ago this year, and i got a job waiting tables and became volunteer for her broadway queue or equity fights aids. i wanted to be part of this community. thank you to everyone involved in "spring awakening," who not only made that dream come true but inspired me to come out of the closet when i was 23. i am now 39, and musical theater is still saving my soul. maria friedman, thank you for letting me be your franklin shepard in this production of "merrily" and allowing me to accept, respect, and express both the lightest and darkest parts of myself. daniel radcliffe and lindsay mendez, you're more than old friends. you are soul mates. and i am looking forward to watching each other change for the rest of our lives. thank you to every member of the extraordinary cast for lifting this "merrily" into the spiritual stratosphere. thank you for everyone working inside the hudson theater. thank you to new york theatre workshop, to the original company and creative team of

from cbs news bay area, this is the evening edition. >> evacuation orders in effect tonight, as a major fire ignites near healdsburg and heads to home. one woman says she might have seen the whole thing start. one person went running up there and it was a very small, it looked like a grass fire, right next to the road. in our horse pasture picking went very very fast. >> we will let you know which communities are at risk of health concerns, as smoke drift south. >> we also have the latest on the other two massive fires burning in california, one near sacramento, the other near los angeles. good evening, -- >> is called the point fire,

and the smoke is pouring south from where it started near healdsburg in sonoma county, which is creating potentially dangerous air-quality for people in sonoma, napa, and marin county. >> the fire has burned more than 1000 acres and has also destroyed a number of buildings. mandatory evacuations have been issued for people close to the blaze. >> weather conditions are making it tough to fight the fire. containment remains at only 15%. >> so, because of the low relative humidity's and the grout wind we are experiencing, those are the biggest challenges we are facing. >> the biggest fear for fire crews and people in the area are buildings in the fire's path, near bradford mountain. >> kevin coe is on the scene and spoke to a woman who said the fire might have started across the street from her property. >> reporter: because of the point fire is under investigation, but what is clear is that these flames have been threatening homes since the fire first broke out around 12:30 this afternoon. firefighters are working through the night to protect

nearby homes and businesses. >> coming down the trail, they said you know you got a fire across the street. we have a horse pasture there that we rent, so of course i went running up there, and looked and there was a small, it looks like a grass fire, just right next to the road, across the street, in our horse pasture. so of course i ran down and said we better get the horses. there is a fire across the street, so we ran out and it went very fast. >> reporter: all 19 horses from the ranch are okay, but the pastor they were on is completely burned. video shows the wildfire spreading onto a porch, and a vineyard. one of many wineries in this area. firefighters confirmed, some buildings have been destroyed. >> fire activity is being driven right northwest wind . that is pushing the fire , so

right now the crews have transitioned to a lot of structure defense along west dry creek road, and there are additional homes on the northeast side of bradford mountain. >> reporter: hundreds of firefighters have been battling the point fire throughout father's day, as the wildfire continues to burn hundreds of acres. some evacuations are in place, as firefighters worn the wildfire could lead to even more. >> if you're in one of those areas, the ready, stay tuned to what is going on, >> firefighters say low humidity and strong wind are the biggest challenges they are facing right now. >> it's windy, that's never a good sign. >> reporter: anthony lives in cloverdale, about 15 minutes away. he stopped to see the fire with his two kids, willow and anthony jr. >> this is a beautiful area. a lot of beautiful homes. have

been up here five years , hopefully everything turns out pretty good. >> reporter: that is what nikki is hoping for, too, but she is staying at the ranch in case the wildfire does take a turn. >> we have 19 horses here, we will stay with them tonight in case the wind should shift and come towards us. >> the wind is currently pushing this wildfire away from the ranch at lake sonoma. residents and first responders are preparing, just in case these wind patterns take a sudden turn. firefighters say it is important for anyone in this part of sonoma county to be ready in case the fire does continue to spread and threaten more homes. >> because of the fire, all summer classes for healdsburg unified school tomorrow have been cancer canceled. dry and windy conditions

have also caused the national weather service to issue a red flag warning starting tomorrow morning at 11:00. for higher elevations at inland parts of the north bay . for more on all of this, let's send it over to first alert meteorologist darren peck. >> andrea, i've got to bring the attention back to the smoke if i can. this incredible time-lapse recapture today from our camera on mt. diablo, that is concord, out there. you can see towards sunset, the majority of the smoke started to clear here. let me show you a different vantage point, this one from salesforce tower. no matter where you were in the bay, today, you saw this. a huge plume of darkness moving across the sky . the wind, which was so important for the fire on the front lines was also crucially important for where that smoke was moving, and how it was moving across the bay. streamlines on the bay today, showing the unique wind pattern, over to the golden gate, you will see , this is color-coded. we have been under a particularly strong surge in

northwesterly wind . we almost always have that out here but it is stronger now than typical. that is why the national weather service put out that red flag warning, primarily because they could see the risk that the strong wind had in terms of its ability to move flame , and also lowering humidity, and of course, driving the plume of smoke. we are back now to using our high-resolution smoke forecast. look at the plume here. i want to show you what happens tomorrow. we get to 1:00, tomorrow, if that fire is still going like it is, the wind will still be acting the same way. that is important. did you see that plume of smoke there moving across? right through the most populated center of sonoma county. look at the air-quality center. santa rosa is getting the worst of this earlier today, let's take a closer look at that. by luck, santa rosa's air quality has improved overnight. this is still a difficult story all the way through sonoma valley. it

would be a good night keep the windows closed if you can. hopefully you have an air purifier at home and working air conditioner. we will talk about the red flag warning coming up in the full forecast in a few minutes. >> thanks, darren. two of the other big blazes in the state tonight, the post fire in southern california has burned over 1400 acres since it started just before 2:00 yesterday afternoon. crews there are also having a hard time getting it under control. lori perez is on i-5 in gorman where the fire started, and she has the latest tonight. >> reporter: we have a good position now to show you some of the intense work these firefighters are doing as they try to get a hold of this massive fire . behind us, you can see the fire crews stationed and standing by . that is because, as we pan over, you can see all of the hotspots dotting the hillside, until just a few moments ago. there were ground crews up there, watering the hotspots , every once in a while, we could see spotlights on the cruise.

multiply that now by 100, that is what fire crews are having to monitor and attack over an area of 14,625 acres, now. a huge area, running parallel to the fire in gorman where it started yesterday afternoon, down south to pyramid lake, mostly remote areas now, also threatening at this .50 homes and 10 businesses. l.a. county fire leaders essay the main factor in keeping this growing is the wind. throughout the day, they were facing wind gusts of 40 to 60 miles per hour. that is making it very difficult for them to contain the fire, because the flames love the wind. overall, more than 1000 personnel working on this from multiple departments. evacuation orders remain in effect for the valley rec area and pyramid lake. there are warnings south of pyramid lake. the firefight is expected to continue overnight, but these are exhausting conditions, and they have been at it now for

more than 30 hours, with who knows how much longer to go. >> over to sacramento county, evacuation orders have been lifted after the jackson fire broke out this afternoon. despite it burning newly 900 acres, with still no containment. it started near jackson road and sunrise boulevard, which is where we find tori apodaca with the very latest. >> reporter: this fire broke out just before noon in the rural area of rancho cordova, within sacramento county. it required the response of multiple agencies, including sac metro fire, forcing people from their homes, as they were evacuated at firefighters working on the ground and in the air to contain the flames. it was a fierce firefight because of that red flag warning in effect, sac metro fire said what really fueled the flames was the low humidity, wind speed, as well as the heat. listen to what battalion chief parker will
