children's water park where a gunman fired off at least 28 rounds. why did he do it? plus -- ♪ where dreams are made of there's nothing ♪ >> honoring broadway's best. the 77th annual tony awards makes theater history. see the big winners of the night. ♪ good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with a fast-moving wildfire in california that has forced more than 1,200 people from their homes. the flames fanned by strong winds have scorched more than 14,000 acres near the community of gorman about 60 miles northwest of los angeles. cbs' elise preston has the details. on scene of the incident, los angeles county community of gorman. >> reporter: flames exploded in the rugged terrain just north of los angeles. high winds, hot temperatures,

and dry brush fueling what is now california's largest wildfire this year. what are your firefighters going through now? >> right now they are in direct attack. we have warm conditions and winds that are unpredictable. >> reporter: this time lapse shows how quickly this fire went from 500 acres saturday afternoon to more than 12,000 in a matter of hours. this is pretty early in the season. >> yes, this is definitely early. there's definitely a concern. this is not a great sign. >> oh, yeah. i see the fire truck. >> reporter: flames came right to the edge of interstate 5, briefly shutting down the major artery between southern and northern california. officials say at least 1,200 people have been evacuated from surrounding campgrounds and recreational areas. >> we saw the smoke coming up, but it wasn't that bad yet. eventually we didn't think it was safe. the sheriff was like, you guys got to go. >> reporter: two commercial structures were burned, but so far no homes have been damaged.

firefighters fear they won't get a break because of the high winds, and it's too early in the season for the powerful water-dropping super scoopers. elise preston, cbs news, gorman, california. a long heat wave begins today putting nearly 70 million people under heat alerts. highs will reach the mid 90s from chicago to pittsburgh today. that is 10 to 15 degrees above normal for mid june. tomorrow the heat moves into the northeast where temperatures will soar into the 90s from d.c. to vermont. wednesday part of new england could reach the triple digits, and forecasters expect some cities to break records. and now to the deadly and violent father's day weekend across the country. gun violence turned what was supposed to be days of celebration into days of tragedy. one of the shootings at a splash park, a place that's supposed to be a safe haven for children. nine people were shot, two of them were kids. that shooting in rochester hills, michigan, was one of nine

mass shootings this weekend. cbs' naomi ruchim joins us now here in new york with the details. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. authorities did identify the man who opened fire at that children's park in michigan just before he took his own life. they say he had no criminal history but did suffer from some mental health issues. now investigators are working to find out if he left any hint of his plans. they still don't know why he would target a park meant for young children. >> watch over our city -- >> reporter: prayers and songs at a vigil in rochester hills, michigan, after 42-year-old michael nash fired around 28 rounds at families cooling off at a splash pad park. >> i know these people. this is my neighborhood. these are friends. these are family members. this is not -- this is horrible. >> reporter: at least nine people were wounded including a

husband and wife who were struck seven times. friends say they were injured while shielding their young children. the shooting also left a woman and her two children in critical condition. >> everything we know about this event is that it was incredibly random. >> reporter: police say after the shooting the suspect walked calmly back to his car and drove to his home less than a mile away. after a brief standoff with police, authorities say he killed himself. a semiautomatic weapon and a handgun were later found inside the home. >> any of us could have, you know, been hurt or shot. we don't know what his plans were. >> reporter: michelle wheeler is one of the suspect's neighbors. >> i saw him here and there. i tried to wave, he never spoke or anything like that. >> reporter: investigators are now trying to determine why the suspect opened fire, though police say he struggled with mental health challenges. the tragic shooting in the detroit suburb was one of several over the weekend. police in round rock, texas, are looking for a gunman who killed two people and wounded 14 others at a juneteenth festival. saturday night in methuen, massachusetts,

eight people were injured after an early sunday morning shooting. the wife of a city employee is among the nine people wounded in that michigan shooting. the mayor of rochester hills has vowed to reopen the splash pad park, telling cbs news that his city will live in hope, not fear. anne-marie? >> all right. naomi ruchim in new york. thank you so much. and another mass shooting in massachusetts. eight people were injured when gunfire erupted at a spontaneous car club meet-up. police are still looking for the shooter who opened fire yesterday after hundreds of young people gathered for a pop-up party organized on social media. seven people were shot, one person suffered a head injury while running away. now to the middle east where there are growing concerns that the escalating violence on the israel-lebanon border could lead to an all-out war. senior biden adviser amos hochstein is set to travel to israel today for a meeting to

try and deescalate the situation between hezbollah and the jewish state. the idf says hezbollah's increasing aggression is bringing them to the brink of what could be a wider escalation. this as israel mourns the deaths of 12 soldiers in one of its deadliest weekends of war in gaza. eight of them killed when their armored vehicle was hit by an explosion in rafah. cbs' chris livesay reports from tel aviv. >> reporter: a tactical pause in the fighting, allowing more aid in parts of central gaza according to a new israeli directive. these worshippers take advantage, celebrating the islamic holiday of ead in front of what's left of their mosque. "we are praying in the rubble," this man tells our cbs news team in gaza. it's a time when man gazans like muslims around the world would make the pilgrimage to mecca in saudi arabia or the hajj, but

due to the war and the closed gaza crossings, this travel agency says 2,500 trips have been canceled. "our hearts break when we hear of people doing hajj in other countries and eating the eid sweets," says this displaced grandmother. "i couldn't take anything with me but my disabled daughter and newborn grandchild. i feel paralyzed like i'm dead." the pause in the fighting falls short of the cease-fire that the biden administration says hamas is stalling. but if the pause holds, it could at least address some of the overwhelming needs of gazans surging in recent weeks as israeli forces target the remaining hamas brigades in rafah. it was here near the border with egypt that eight israeli soldiers were killed this weekend when their armored vehicle was struck by an explosion believed to be a roadside bomb in the worst attack on israeli forces this year. here the tactical pause does not apply.

mysterious deaths and disappearances of tourists on the greek islands. local media reporting a missing american man found dead yesterday on a beach on a small island west of corfu. authorities are also searching for another missing american tourist on a different island. 59-year-old retired los angeles county sheriff's deputy albert calibet was reported missing last week when he went on a solo hike in very hot conditions on the island of amorgos. two others have been found dead on greek islands including

british doctor and tv personality michael mosley. president biden is back in washington after a fundraising blitz in california, while donald trump rallied supporters in a crucial battleground state. cbs' skyler henry reports. >> reporter: actors george clooney and julia roberts kicked off a star-studded affair for the biden campaign saturday night. the president during a moderated interview alongside former president obama and talk show host jimmy kimmel was asked about a range of issues including health care, reproductive rights, and the supreme court. >> the next president is likely to have two new supreme court nominees. the supreme court has never been as out of kilter as it is today. >> reporter: former president donald trump slammed democrats in a social media post, accusing, quote, the radical left of trying to influence the court system and to breaking to their will. he spent saturday campaigning in detroit. >> the rigged trial in new york, my numbers have increased substantially, and fundraising, by the way, is, i believe, the highest numbers in the history of politics.
