from cbs news bay area, this is the morning edition. thanks for joining us this morning. it is monday, june 17th. >> let's get the week started. there was a very small, what looked like a grass fire across the road and it went very fast. >> fire season and families out of their homes in the north bay. up-to-the-minute news from the fire lines and also on an air quality and heat warning. a baby for the ballers

winners. there is a lot to get to. wildfires are burning up and down the state. these are the two fires we are monitoring. the point fire scorched more than 1000 acres, tearing through buildings and triggering an evacuation order. and the post fire has forced thousands from their homes. let's continue drilling down on the fire watch. doesn't acres burned in sonoma county and the number of buildings destroyed. many have been evacuated from that area. the weather is not helping. we understand this fire is only 15% contained. >> because of the low relative humidity and strong wind, those are the two biggest challenges we are facing. >> as we tell this story throughout the morning, watch bradford mountain. a woman said it may have started just across the street from where she

lives. >> guests came down for a trail ride and they said, you know, you've got a little fire across the street. we have a horse pasture that we rent to the neighbor across the street. so we went running up there and there was a very small what look like a grass fire next to the road in the horse pasture. so i said we better get the horses. we ran up and it went very fast. >> all 19 horses from the ranch are okay. but the pastor that they were on is completely burned. you shows the wildfire spreading onto a porch and vineyard. many wineries are in this area. firefighters confirmed that some buildings have been destroyed. >> is being driven by a northwest wind. right now the cruiser have really transitioned to a letter

structured offense -- a lot of a structured offense. >> hundreds of firefighters have been battling the fire throughout father's day as it continues to burn hundreds of acres. some evacuations are in place as firefighters warned that the wildfire can lead to even more. >> stay tuned for what is going on. >> firefighters say low humidity and strong winds are the weakest challenges they are facing right now. >> it is windy and that is never a good sign. >> anthony lives about 15 minutes away from the point fire and stopped to see the fire with his two kids. >> this is a beautiful area, a lot of beautiful wineries and homes. i know it can spread pretty quick. >> that is what nikki is hoping

for, too. she is staying at the ranch in case the wildfire takes a turn. >> we will stay here tonight with all the horses, we have 19 horses. just in case the wind should shift. >> reporter: the wind is is currently pushing the wildfire away from the ranch at lake sonoma. but residents and first responders are preparing just in case the wind patterns do take a sudden turn. firefighters also say that it is important for anyone in this part of the county to be ready in case the fire continues to spread and threaten more homes. >> coming up we will be live from the fire line. but a heads up for those in hillsboro, unified schools are canceled due to the fire. we are watching air quality this morning. you will be breathing smoke from the point fire in sonoma county. if it is murky here, imagine what it is like a

nap and marin county. jessica burch is here with more as we have a spare the air alert right now. >> and on top of that, the red flag warning. it starts at 11:00 this morning for all our friends in the north bay and solano county. for the friends in the sacramento valley, gusting north winds, about 30 to 35 miles per hour into this afternoon. with that low relative humidity, it can drop to 10% this afternoon, stretching all through the east bay in areas like fairfield and vallejo. we will keep a close eye on these conditions. it is fire season and we are keeping a close eye on the wind. it is relatively light for the most part as we wake up, maxing off into the 5 to 10 miles per hour range. this afternoon, it

shifts fast. they will be about 20 miles per hour at the surface level near napa and we will continue to watch the wind to strengthen into areas like santa rosa, all the way into the 4:00 hour and closer to dinner time. the red flag warning stays in effect until 7:00 tonight. and the current air quality through the bay area, we see pockets of unhealthy and very unhealthy conditions in the north bay in areas like santa rosa, all the way down to areas like oakland. so if you are noticing symptoms already this morning, take it slow, continue to check in on your loved ones, take good care of yourself by drinking lots of water and wearing a mask if you need to. that's from napa to fairfield, the spare the air alert is in effect and we will keep you updated on conditions over the next couple of hours. let's go over to the maps

and show you some areas we are talking about with those of fires burning. roadways are blocked due to the wildfire, dry creek road both directions and another closure on dry creek between westside road and everett ranch road. please avoid that area if you can. other than that, a lot of activity going on through there. the freeways are looking okay, not affecting 101 itself. 580 is a busy ride this morning the super commuters working into that area. so a couple of things to ink about this monday morning. sacramento firefighters have their hands full this morning. they are battling the excelsior fire in sacramento county. it has scorched nearly 900 acres and the crews are still working to draw containment lines. authorities say the large vegetation fire broke out just before noon

yesterday near excelsior and the checks and roads. several outbuildings have been destroyed and as of late last night, an evacuation order is still in effect for the multiple residents that live in the area. firefighters have been attacking the flames on the ground and in the air. they were able to protect evacuated homes and livestock. >> when we first arrived we had a significant cone that was very limited with visibility. we took a lot of precaution with something like that. we need the community to be diligent and prevent these kinds of tragedies. >> the cause of the fire is still under investigation. no injuries reported. in los angeles county the fire crews are trying to get a better grip on the post fire. the latest numbers show it has grown to over 14,000 acres, alongside

i-5, and over 300 firefighters have worked to get containment. more than 1200 people have been evacuated at hungry valley and near pyramid lake. the started at around 1:45 in the afternoon on saturday near the grapevine. we will stay up-to-date with everything related to the point fire and other fires burning in california. you can always go to our website, kpix.com and the cbs news app. it was a big day for stanford university graduates and hundreds walked out of the commencement ceremony in protest. and more from jessica on the wind conditions, the first alert weather day and the spare the air conditions. we are watching it closel

the u.s. surgeon general warning that the hazard for social media for children requires urgent action. they want warnings that get done for cigarettes and alcohol, linking heavy use of social media apps with depression. he says in an op-ed this morning "we are in the middle of the youth mental health crisis." let us know what you think. a tragic weekend of mass shootings in more than one part of our nation. in michigan,

nine people including a mother and her children were shot in what police say was a random shooting. it happened at a crowded children's splash had -- splash pad. the shot or -- shooter had a history of mental health issues. benjamin netanyahu dissolved his work cabinet, the three-member body had been making key decisions about the war in gaza. this of course follows the first in the cabinet to call it quits. this all happens as israel's military says it will begin a daily tactical pause in the fighting for now. they say they will allow humanitarian aid that has been backed up at the border, in to southern gaza. but the operation in rafah will continue. hundreds of students walked out of stanford's weekend

commencement ceremony to protest. they say they are also calling out the university's inaction regarding student demands for divestment. millions of americans will face sweltering conditions as a heat wave takes hold in much of the middle part of the nation. the heat will spread it down into the northeast tomorrow. it could last all week and into the weekend in many places. heads up if you are traveling, especially to washington, d.c., where temperatures are likely to get into the upper 90s, pushing closer to that triple digit. you will also have a lot of humidity. temperatures in the south bay this we can bring more

wildfire danger. a new wildfire broke out saturday morning outside of san jose city limits and was 100% contained just before noon on sunday. smoke still pouring into the bay area from the point fire that started in sonoma county. it is creating potentially dangerous air quality for sonoma, napa and marin counties. a spare the air alert issued through at least today. jessica has more details on that this morning. maybe this is one of the days where you can encourage people to take public transit. >> that is why i like touching base with you on that. and to add to that, the national weather service issued a red flag warning for all those elevated areas in napa, sonoma and all of solano county. as we take a look at the conditions this morning, relative humidity is already low. it is expected to get lower than where it is right now. we are getting to around 5% relative humidity through the afternoon hours. and like i said, this is for

the regions highlighted on this map. here is the relative humidity right now, it drops to around 5% in napa in the afternoon hours. we will continue to watch it drop, and as we head into the next couple of hours, the wind is getting stronger, coming in from the north, bringing in that smoke and poor air quality. this is by a: 30 in the morning. about 15 miles per hour wind gusts moving through the north areas, and gets stronger by lunchtime. we continue to watch breezy conditions last into the evening hours tonight. that is a big reason why the air quality index is already low in certain regions in the north bay. let's take a step back and look at other conditions. a lot of states, we talked about this earlier, dealing with extreme heat. in the bay,

temperatures are relatively mild. we've got breezy conditions in the north paper temperatures are looking really decent. 70s near san francisco, the north bay, sitting in the 80s this afternoon. the east bay, last week we were dealing with heat waves and now we are sitting in the 80s in areas like livermore and antioch. and the first day of summer is right around the corner and it kind of feels like it. low 80s all the way over to los gatos. over the next seven days, lots of sunshine for many of us in the inland areas. along the coast, we will still get that june gloom set up and that signifies the beautiful, cool set up in the morning hours and the foggy set up into the afternoon. 80s and 70s flirting back and forth all week long inland and we warm up fast as we head into the first weekend

of summer. saturday and sunday, 90s and 80s insight. along the coast, closer to the bay, here is the june gloom, each day we will see those cloudy conditions, holding on tightly to 70s and 60s. and that is how we are kicking off this weekend as well. the first day of summer is on thursday. we will keep you updated on the forecast with the red flag warning and spare the air alert. let's talk about the roadways. all eyes are on the north bay because of the point fire. keeping an eye on the closures as well, dry key -- creek road closed in both directions between westside road in everett ranch road. also on stewart's point, skaggs springs road and marina road, evacuations and both directions between rock pile and old skaggs springs road.

try to avoid that area if you can. 101 is open and moving with no delays. west bend 580 is already busy with a slow ride out of tracy. getting onto 205, we have some brake lights there. alive look at the bay bridge, things are already getting a little crowded for the west bend commute into san francisco. they shifted the camera to show you where things bogged down as you head toward the incline. we will tell you if there is a trouble spot or accident reported. that is pretty busy for a monday. golden gate bridge moving along well. so traffic is pretty light moving into the city from there. it is 5:20. the ballers unveiled their new mascot, scrappy and we unveil white there star slugger has more than just stats to

>anc2 mic>bay from cbs news bay area, this is the morning edition. good morning, everybody . hello, in san francisco. good morning to our friends in the east bay as well. north bay, we are watching the fire and air quality. but let's jump the map over to southern california. the first major wildfire is ripping through thousands of acres in los angeles county. water tankers dumping onto the post fire. only 2% contained. naomi ruchim brings us to the scene of the fire and also a separate blaze in northern california.

>> reporter: a winfield brush fire is raging through miles of mountainous terrain in northwest los angeles. the fast-moving post fire has been first reported sunday afternoon, exploding from just 2000 acres, doubling in just a few hours to now more than 14,000 acres, nearly two dozen square miles. >> the wind has been a major factor, along with the dry fuels and terrain. >> reporter: more than 1200 people were evacuated near korman, california this father's day and in nearby lancaster a smaller brush fire forced neighbors from their homes before they were allowed to return sunday night. >> it shifted west end as you can see behind us, it is just about 100 miles away. >> in santa clarita and orange tent fills the sky, causing county leaders to issue an

air-quality alert. and in northern california, the crews are battling a small wildfire near lake sonoma, now covering more than 1000 acres. although the area is mostly home to open branches and vineyards, some structures have been destroyed. the point fire is 15% contained as the state's firefighting resources spread across california. >> you can see the smoke from the fire line. we all pay the price for that with the air quality. >> also the wind and relative humidity. certain pockets of the bay area already dealing with unhealthy to very unhealthy air-quality in regions close to concord, all the way over to oakland. especially in areas accent arose up. we will continue to watch those wins get gustier, bringing in smoke from

different regions into different pockets of the bay area. right now the wind is relatively light, about five miles per hour. by 8:00 it will start to get gustier, all the way toward napa and the low-lying areas. we are keeping a close eye on the hills. and now we advance to lunch time, 22-mile-per-hour wind gusts. and we have watch those wins -- wanting to strengthen all through the bay area. let's match that up with a relative humidity. sitting close to around 50% on average through the north bay. and through lunchtime, less than 10% in areas like napa, and less than 5% in napa heading into dinnertime. this is the exact reason why the national weather service has issued a red flag warning to those higher elevated areas through napa and sonoma. and all through solano county and into the sacramento

valley, the red flag warning remains in effect until 7:00 tonight. it will start at 11:00 a.m. through the east bay and northbay, talking about 80s in the forecast today, 60s and 70s along the coast and we will have more on your forecast coming up in just a bit. let's talk about road closures this morning. some road closures near the dry creek and 101. looking live at the bay bridge toll plaza, if you are headed through this area near the incline, it does not look like there are any major accidents but it is already slow this morning as you head over into san francisco. getting a little crowded for that westbound ride already. metering lights not officially on yet. time for a look at this morning's other top stories. a police shooting in fremont ends

with an armed suspect taken to the hospital. it happened around 9:00 on sunday morning. it started with a carjacking in a walmart parking lot. the suspect left on foot, was spotted nearby and at some point was shot and taken to a nearby hospital. police did not say what led to the shooting. a crowd turned unruly after police responded to a sideshow in south san jose. it happened at around 7:00 p.m. on winchester boulevard. an officer was flagged down about a person struck by a sideshow car. when they tried to assist their patrol car was severely damaged by spectators and that prevented him from getting to the injured person. the officer had minor injuries and no immediate arrests were made. firefighters were able to contain a fire in downtown san francisco. this broke out at the stern school a block from the transamerica building. it

spread to three buildings before the fire department got it under control. no injuries and the cause was accidental. this was a lot of fun. this was on columbus avenue in san francisco. it turned into a big block party with several stages of live music and hundreds of vendors selling things like jewelry, art and crafts. they also offer free meals, job training to san franciscans in need. taking a live look at sfo. a big day for pride in san francisco. the mayor is said to cut the ribbon for the final phase of the harvey milk terminal. this has been in the

works since 2019 and will feature a new ticket counter area, celebrating the life and legacy of harvey milk who was killed at city hall for his advocacy for lgbtq+ rights. over at the airport they also have many other features. make sure to tell your friends when they come in for pride, stop and take a look at our legacy. the bay area is considered the world capital for the lgbtq+ community but oakland is also home to the oldest continuously operated gay bar in all of the united states. >> reporter: when patty noticed that her favorite bar was up for sale a couple of years ago machine new that it was her moment to take the reins. >> this is really a place where i used to come and party and i thought, i want to be part of

the legacy. >> opened in 1933, this unassuming venue in oakland is believed to be the oldest continuously operating gay bar in the country. over the decades it has weathered many storms. during the so-called lavender skier in the 1950s, the white horse had a no touch policy. a bartender would walk around with a ruler and measure the distance between customers. if they got too close, you would hit them with a ruler. even entering the place required discretion. >> there was a chinese restaurant next door and people would go to the chinese restaurant to get to the gay bar. >> and perhaps because of that , it somehow never got rated by cops who would routinely bust down the doors of similar establishments.

>> i think law enforcement had been coming here and enjoying themselves. that's why this place has been protected for 90 years. >> now the bar, which served as a refuge for primarily white men is owned by a woman of color. it is an eclectic mix of gay men, lesbians and non-binary folks. sarah started coming in the late '90s and says even though the bar has changed over the years, in her words, it has always had the same heart. >> it is a monument. an establishment that i am so happy made it through. >> a gaming executive by day, patty says a little profit she makes on the bar goes right back into the business. >> this is not about making money, it is about creating space for our community. >> she is determined to not only preserve its storied past, but to keep the white horse alive and kicking.

virginia hislop has lived a full life, two children, four grandchildren and eight -- nine great-grandchildren. she served on school and college boards in central washington and despite her success, something was missing. >> from time to time i wish i had finished and got my masters. part of it was the fact that i've been a college director for a good number of years and i did not have the advanced degree . >> virginia had taken the required classes at stanford but needed one more thing, her masters thesis when this happened in 1941. >> the japanese bombed pearl harbor. >> virginia quickly married her college sweetheart before deployment. she assisted in the war and focused on her family and never got to finish her master's thesis. fast forward 83 years, we don't have a

thesis requirement anymore. she is actually satisfied the requirements in a masters of arts. so 83 years later we are honoring this woman who has done so much. >> a standing ovation on sunday afternoon at the commencement ceremony from fellow graduates and her family. many of them live in the bay area. >> so much gratitude. she has believed in all of us and has cheered us on all the way through. cheering her on is pretty cool. >> she received her masters academic hood and finally, her diploma. >> i am thrilled for her. i feel like this is the crowning glory of her amazement -- amazing career. >> i am very satisfied. very pleased. >> she is quick to remind people that it is never too late to get a college degree.

and this adds one more highlight to her many accomplishments. >> what will you do with that diploma? >> added to the others i have in the basement. >> we are so proud of her. let's take a live look outside. jessica, you took home a trophy this morning, you are counted as a woman of distinction this morning. let's all cheer. >> congratulations. >> that was my first m.a. it all had to do with telling the weather story in the bay area. and that is exactly what we are doing this morning as we are dealing with extreme conditions in the north bay. the national weather service issued a red flag warning that starts at 11:00 a.m. stretching all the way up into cloverdale and into solano county. that area has low relative humidity and also

gusty conditions. around 30 miles per hour into this afternoon. right now, that is not the case. starting with light wind from areas like napa into santa rosa. about 30-mile-per-hour wind gusts expected in fairfield in the afternoon. and the wind will continue to move in from the north, from higher to lower elevated areas, which means that air becomes a lot more dry and condensed as it moves into the lower elevated areas. wind speeds anywhere from 20 miles per hour, stretching all the way along the coast, close to around 40-mile-per-hour winds near bodega bay. that, matched with relative humidity means fire weather conditions are a concern for us . we will continue to keep a close eye on this as boots are fighting on the ground. into the lunchtime hours, relative humidity drops all the way down to around 10%

and even lower into dinnertime hours. so we are keeping a very close eye on those conditions. let's go to the virtual-reality map. areas like napa and sonoma, sitting in the 80s. so we are favoring normal conditions. for the first couple of days of summer, thursday will be the longest day of the year, expecting 80s for today, tomorrow and lasting into this week's forecast. you can see that highlighted on the seven-day model. dipping down into the 70s and then a warm-up into the weekend with 90s around the corner for the inland areas. but not nearly as close as we head into the bay. we stay reasonable along the bay shoreline with that june gloom is sticking around as we head into this week's forecast. let's talk around -- about
