latest conditions. remembering willie mays. a baseball giant on and off the field. the tributes pouring in for the "say hey kid." and cuffed and booked. justin timberlake accused of driving while intoxicated. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. from oppressive heat to raging wildfires and a tropical storm system, americans are facing extreme conditions from coast to coast. 76 million people across 24 states are dealing with the stifling heat, and the worst is yet to come. more than a dozen records could fall from ohio to maine with highs in many locations soaring into the 90s. down south parts of texas are under tropical storm warnings. coastal communities are preparing for heavy rain, flooding, and possible tornadoes. a system brewing in the gulf of mexico is forecast to become a tropical storm later today and

make landfall in mexico before dumping up to a foot of rain in southern texas. and out west, dozens of wildfires are raging, including in new mexico where one person was killed. hundreds of structures destroyed, and a state of emergency declared. cbs' jarred hill is following all of these developments for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. the video and the images from those wildfires are absolutely devastating. this morning a top-level fire management team is expected to take over fighting those two incredibly destructive and deadly wildfires in new mexico after nearly three days of burning, they are 0% contained. >> looks like an apocalypse. i've never seen anything like it in my life. it was the most scariest thing i've ever seen. >> reporter: the race is on to contain towering flames ripping through parts of new mexico. residents heeding a dire warning -- go now. >> we've seen other fires, but nothing like this. >> reporter: pamela bonner took this video of the smoke and

flames rising above the ridge line in the village of riotoso. thousands in this part of southern new mexico have been forced to flee. the wildfire burning over 500 homes and buildings. >> we drove away, i didn't give it a second thought. >> reporter: it's not one but two wildfires that have intersected here. about 75 miles west of roswell, charring over 19,000 acres in less than 24 hours. >> it's -- it's sad. these people have lost a lot. >> reporter: new mexico's governor has declared a state of emergency and deployed the national guard as over a dozen agencies work to stop the burning. >> we have two devastating, enormous fires, when i say enormous it means that they're getting more and more complicated to address. >> reporter: meanwhile, near copperopolis, california, about 100 miles east of san francisco,

weaker winds helped crews get the arrow fire 20% contained. just the latest blaze as fire season erupts out west. going back to new mexico, the winds are expected to be a challenge for crews fighting the two fires there. the cause, though, is still under investigation. >> all right. thank you very much. jarred hill in new york. now to some really sad news from the sports world. willie mays, one of baseball's greatest all-time players, has died. the electrifying "say hey kid" died yesterday at the age of 93. the san francisco giants sharing the news on line with that photo that you saw, this photo. and then wrigley field held a moment of silence during last night's giants-cubs game. cbs' michael george looks back at his legendary career. >> reporter: it was baseball's biggest stage, and willie mays knew just what to do. >> there's a long driveway back -- >> reporter: his

over-the-shoulder grab in the 1954 world series is simply known as "the catch," and more than a half century later, it's still one of the most memorable plays in baseball history. >> willie mays for the catch -- >> i always thought i could catch every ball that came out there. i believed that i could do anything on the ball field. >> reporter: he was right. the "say hey kid" could run, throw, and hit for power like few others who ever played the game. >> for his 512th round tripper. >> reporter: over 22 seasons, he belted 660 homers, had more than 3,200 hits, and won 12 gold gloves. mays' professional career began in the segregated negro southern league while he was still in high school. scouts took notice, and the alabama youth signed with the new york giants in 1950. it didn't take long before mays was called up to the big leagues at age 20. >> you'd have to be blind if you were a manager and couldn't tell

that there was a superstar standing in front of you in willie mays. >> reporter: in his early playing days mays lived in new york's harlem neighborhood where he often took time to play stick ball with area kids. >> mays gets his first hit -- >> reporter: the center fielder moved with the giants to san francisco and then came back to new york, capping his hall of fame career with the mets. when baseball fans talk about the greatest players ever, willie mays will always be in that conversation. michael george, cbs news. well, those who knew, loved, and looked up to willie mays are reacting to his death including former president barack obama who awarded the hall of famer the presidential medal of freedom back in 2015. obama says willie mays wasn't just a singular athlete blessed with an unmatched combination of grace, skill, and power, he was also a wonderfully warm and generous person and an inspiration to an entire generation.

in a house collapse in new york. firefighters responded to reports of an explosion at a two-story house. when they arrived they found many of the victims in the front yard but had to pull at least one person out of a car buried in the rubble. the victims were taken to the hospital. two are reported to be in very serious condition. officials say all residents have been accounted for, and an investigation is under way. an autopsy released on the death a college student in nashville, and good samaritans hold dune a sexual assault suspect. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand". residents in the borough of queens helped capture a suspect wanted in the rape of a 13-year-old girl. nearly a dozen people stopped the 25-year-old, christian inga, on the street yesterday and held him until officers arrived. they recognized him from photos and surveillance video released earlier by police. authorities say he suffered minor injuries when he fought with the good samaritans after

being stopped. he's accused of raping the girl last week in a park. "the tennessean" says officials released the autopsy report for a college student whose body was recovered from a river after going missing in nashville. the body of 22-year-old riley strain was pulled from the river in march, two weeks after he disappeared. surveillance video showed him walking around, sometimes stumbling, after he was kicked out of a bar. the medical examiner determined strain died for accidental drowning and intoxication. the report found his blood alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit, and he had a legal form of thc in his system. and the "los angeles times" says the los angeles school board approved a ban on cellphones and social media platforms during school hours. board members say the devices and social media are distractions that lead to anxiety and cyber-bullying. school officials have 120 days to develop a policy on where cellphones will be stored during the day and what exceptions should be made for certain students.

-- is a component of your $33 million compensation package, i mean, how can you possibly qualify for any of this? >> the only way to course correct is to face the truth and confront the need for action. >> we are responsible. >> reporter: calhoun's testimony comes just hours after a new whistleblower complaint emerged alleging when boeing restarted production of the 737 max after those two deadly crashes, there was a 300% increase in reports about parts that did not meet proper manufacturing standards. and while those parts were supposed to be removed from production and closely tracked, the 737 program was losing hundreds of nonconforming parts. boeing employee sam mohawk feared that nonconforming parts were being installed on 737s and that could lead to a catastrophic event. the document also claims when boeing learned of a pending faa inspection last june many parts were moved to another location to, quote, intentionally hide improperly stored parts from the faa. >> i do know and have followed up that the speak-up had been
