respects to the late giants legend. but good afternoon. i'm ryan yamamoto. when you think of any legends from the san francisco giants, willie mays might come to mind. say, hey, kid was electric on the field. it was a world series champion and all store in hall of famer. willie mays died at the age of 93 in palo alto. well, they may story extended well beyond the baseball field. he broke down barriers for athletes of color. and others has lost being felt all around the world and right here in the bay area. vern glenn has more on the legacy that may's left behind. >>really? left. >>willie mays was a great base. player. is an understatement. you cannot mention the 5 greatest players of all time. without bringing him in the discussion. more than 1931. the son of a steel mill worker. may's learned the game at an early age and although as that

was alabama high school had no baseball team. it was clear that sport would define him. at 16. he was playing for the birmingham black barons of the negro leagues. the day after he graduated from high school he signed with the new york giants and by age 20. was in the majors playing games at the polo grounds. that was 1950. his career was briefly put on hold for 2 years because of military service. 1954. he was back in a baseball uniform. doing what he did best. over the shoulder catch in the 54 world series win over cleveland is still considered by many the greatest catch in the history of the game. he was the national league's most valuable player in 1954. >>got you did you hit your 31st home run today? do you play center field? you say?

>>it was his bat that did a lot. of the talking. for 8 years running. he drove it over 100 runs 660 career home runs is 4th all time. his career batting average was 30, too. but 1958 the giants had moved from new york to san francisco. from the wonderful world of sports. we bring you home run derby. high fly ball into right center field. this may go all the way its way back there and gone into the right center field bleachers led them to the 1962 world series. and mccain team captain in 1964. that was followed by another mvp award in 1965. almost 40 years after you retired in 1973. as a new york met, he was considered baseball's greatest living ballplayer. a label of which he took events. never like that. if you are the greatest ballplayer, you just say you're the greatest, ballplayer rather not live involved. ballplayer. what good is that? i i heard

with great sadness that we announce giants legend. famer. willie mays. has passed away and here we are. a celebration. ballpark. where he got his start as a 17 year old. playing for the black barons. please. that game along with tomorrow's giants cardinals game were part of the mlb celebration of negro league baseball. maze had released a statement earlier this week regretting that he could not attend and landmarks all around san francisco, including city hall were lit up in orange to pay tribute to willie mays. tower and salesforce tower also shining orange. he left mark on the city and, of course on the game of baseball. we're also seeing an outpouring of reaction in the sports world maze, god's son and fellow giants legend barry bonds posted online that may's helped shape him into the man he is today and the giants released a statement from willie mays, son michael.

days. it is now 50%. contained further up north and colusa county fire crews battling the sites fire more than 15,000 acre fire just northeast of clear lake that makes this the largest fast growing fire in northern california, calif. irs says low humidity and winds are posing a challenge. controlling that fire, which is now just 5% contained. south of here in california, is county. the arrow fire has exploded to more than 5000 acres 33% contained the fire said that 1 firefighter suffered minor injuries while battling the flames. closures and evacuation orders for people in the vicinity are still in effect. okay back to our 1st alert weather right now, let's give you a live look outside yesterday in the past couple of days, very hazing. and clarity. still little hazy this morning, so let's go back and check back in with meteorologist jessica burch. >>daytime highs today throughout the santa clara valley or about 10 degrees cooler compared to where we were at just yesterday. we're sitting in the 70s this afternoon near los cotto's san jose 70s, all the way off,

deliver more and fremont. we have some 80s trickled in off into the east bay near antioch in walnut creek, but for our friends near san francisco and across the bay bridge in oakland, holding on tight to 60s with some cloudy and breezy conditions along our coast today, sunny or skies off their wine country this afternoon, actually topping off in the 70s for daytime highs. lives. now we're talking about temperatures a lot. and here's the reason why we dip down fast compared to yesterday. now we're all sitting below average, no matter where you live in the bay area and compare that to the rest of the state dealing with goodness gracious, triple digits down in the south, triple digits off near nevada and arizona. what we have with that breezy onshore flow is almost a treat for us if you ask me, but watch what happens as we head into the next 7 days will continue to see a nice warm up as we head in the 1st day of summer, right around the corner. daytime highs are going to hit the upper 80s by tomorrow afternoon 90s by friday, the 1st few days of summer are looking beautiful and warm in our inland areas, upper 90s by saturday, we average out heading into next week with more 80s in store for us, but

more at 3. well, the bay bay area mourns a national hero, a baseball legend the say, hey, kid, of course, willie mays passing away yesterday at the age of 93. the former giants center fielder began his career in the negro league in 1948 with the birmingham black barons their home as rick woodfield. it is the oldest pro ballpark in the nation this this week they put the final touches on this mural honoring mays. and, of course, the san francisco giants. they will take on the st louis cardinals at that field that rick woodfield that will happen tomorrow afternoon. we will carry that game or highlights right here on k p i x well, that's it for the afternoon edition. remember, we're streaming 24 7 on the free cbs news app or next newscast set 3:00. i have a great afternoon.
