it's thursday, june 20th, this is cbs news morning. a triple threat. storms, fire and heat.

the first tropical storm of the season bearing down on south texas, wildfireses out west burning out of control. and leaving behind a charred trail of destruction. while millions of americans bake under a blistering heat wave. is ther any relief in site? good morning, it's good to be with you. americans from coast to coast are facing three life threatening weather events. first, the dangerous heat. second, the gulf coast is feeling alberto's fury. the first named storm of the season is already bringing heavy rains, flooding and high winds to texas. as the tropical storm moves across northeastern mexico, its effects are being felt far and wide with a main concern up to a foot of rainfall. then third, the wildfireses. we have now learned that a second person has died in new mexico. around 1,400 homes and buildings have been destroyed and state officials say much-needed rain

may help firefighters' effort, but the moisture is now adding new challenges. we have the very latest on all of this. >> good morning. the storms headed for the affected areas of could be a blessing or a curse. if the rain misses the fires, downward winds could quicken the spread of these flames. storm clouds and rain drops in new mexico bring hopes of relief from two massive fires that have charred more than 20,000 acres since monday. but the weathers also raise ing the threat of high winds and flash floods. officials now warning people who live nearby to get to higher ground. >> we are not out of the woods. while this weather is helpful to the fire, not helpful to the floods. >> reporter: new mexico's governor confirming 1,400 structures have burned, and that number may include around 500 homes. christopher brooid bright and

his mother are choosing to stay close to their home and wait out the blaze. >> we have a few animals. we're right here next to the hospital. >> we still have power. we still have wifi. >> reporter: neighbors and thousands of other people heeded the warnings to evacuate. >> we are very concerned about the potential loss of life. we know that there are several people still unaccounted for. >> reporter: a 60-year-old local musician died in the fire. his children are now trying to convince others to get out before it's too late. >> no way is an easy way to go out. a wildfire is just so traumatic and devastating. this isn't a joke. if they tell the you to go, you need to go. >> reporter: they are investi investigating a daelt of a second person whose remains were found on tuesday. >> the national weather service in new mexico first issued a flash flood warning for the affected areas wednesday afternoon. since then, they have been extend ing that warning to emergency management officials in the area announced they were pulling operations from certain

parts until it's safe to continue operating. >> heed the warnings. thank you. so as we said, communities along the texas gulf coast are dealing with high winds, heavy rain and flooding from tropical storm alberto. in surfside beach 60 miles south of houston a police officer in a raft rescued people in flood waters. the rains left two feet of water in the streets. some residents were forced to evacuate 3 about 40 mile was in galveston, juneteenth events had to be rescheduled due to flooded streets. a unicorn float was spotted drifting through the flood waters. 18 states are sweat ing through this blistering heat wave with more than a dozen cities hitting new record highs. and today will be much of the same. temperatures will rise to the middle of the upper 90s from columbus, ohio, to boston. heat indexes will make it feel

well above 100. we have a report from a brutally hot philadelphia. >> reporter: in the city of brotherly love, the heat came early. >> it's super hot. >> emt says he's bracing for a busy season. >> yeah, last summer it was actually summer when we started getting our heatstrokes. >> reporter: the city has already declared its first heat health emergency of the year through saturday. in vermont -- >> we are out here for the next couple days trying to beat the heat. >> reporter: there are parts of the state that are almost 10 degrees hotter than miami. climate central says the shifting weather patterns have a culprit. >> talk to us about the impact of the activity on the heat patterns. >> as we put extra carbon in the atmosphere and coal, what we're

essentially doing is trapping in a lot of this heat. it adds a blanket over top of us. there's nowhere for the heat to go. >> reporter:st t also important to note that the nighttime temperatures are also rising, so there's not a lot of time for the cities or the ground, the atmosphere and the people to recover before the sun comes out. so it only feels like it's get ing hotter. cbs news, philadelphia. it's crunch time for the supreme court ahead of their summer break and big decisions loom, which we could get as early as today. the high court still has to decide if form president trump has immunity from criminal prosecution for his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election results. there are also cases involving whether a federal obstruction law can be used to prosecute january 6th rioters and whether emergency rooms can refuse to perform abortions when the life and health of a mother is at stake. and fresh off his trip to

north korea, vladimir putin arrived vietnam as he looks to boost economic ties with friendly countries amid international sanctions over his war in ukraine. putin is expected to meet with the communist leadership during his two-day visit. the stop comes after putin and kim jong-un signed an agreement to help each other with military assistance in the event of war. cbs reports. >> reporter: it was a chance dpr russian president vladimir putin and north korean leader kim jong-un to flaunt their friendship and flaunt they did. massive careful liquor graphed crowds cheered as they waved flags in central square, which was dominated by portraits of putin and kim. it wasn't the ride in the limousine that set alarm bells ringing in washington and beyond. it was putin's announcement the
