fire and floods. new mexico dealing with a double disaster. heavy rains and two out-of-control wildfires. do you love me? do you each love me? >> yes, the world really loves him. tributes and accolades for donald sutherland, a hollywood icon, whose career spanned more than half a century. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. now that it's officially summer, we can say summer is off to one scorching start. there's no relief from the stifling, sticky, and sweaty weather. in fact, not only is the heat dome sticking around through the weekend, it will be expanding into parts of the midwest. today tens of millions of americans are under heat advisories across the country with heat index readings expected to hit triple digits in some cities. cbs' jarred hill is joining us from new york with more on all of this and how people are trying to stay cool. good morning.

>> reporter: good morning. you know, when i was out here in a parka in december, in january, in february, in march, i could only wish for the heat. now we are getting into dangerous territory for the millions of americans trapped in this multi-day stretch of incredibly high temperatures. the main piece of advice from experts -- either stay inside or outside in the water. packed pools and splash pads as people and pets tried to find relief from a record-breaking heat wave on the first official day of summer. >> this past week is -- has been rough. we're really happy that we live so close to a splash pad. >> reporter: no relief for the sweaty at this beach in burlington, vermont. instead, disappointment. the water blocked off because of dangerous algae blooms triggered by the warmer waters. >> i was going come down and cool off. >> reporter: the national weather service predicts that cities from the midwest to the mid-atlantic will set more heat records today. visitors to the nation's capital say they're taking precautions as they brave the heat. >> i've got my shorts, my

sunglasses, the shade. i'm good. >> reporter: people are urged to stay inside of air conditioned buildings and cooling centers like this during peak daylight hours. >> i'm lucky i can come here and cool off. >> reporter: in new jersey, a hot day got even hotter after a brush fire broke out causing major delays for amtrak passengers stuck on sweltering trains for over an hour. for some around the country, though, the rising temperatures is causing a different kind of pain -- on wallets. >> they may have ac, but they don't want to turn it on because they don't feel they have the means to pay for utility bills. >> reporter: with potentially more record-breaking temps to come. the u.s. department of energy is forecasting that electric bills for households between the months of june and august will be 3% higher than the same period last year. chalking this up to more people using more electricity to try and cool homes as we are in for a potential scorcher of a summer. >> going to be a tough one.

thank you. new mexico is not only dealing with wildfires but flash floods. a muddy and charred mess is all that remains in parts of ruidoso after a fierce storm dumped 2.5 inches of rain in just 90 minutes. while the weather may have helped stop the flames from spreading, firefighters had to be pulled away to avoid the floodwaters. the wildfires are 0% contained. two people have died, and 1,400 structures damaged. >> they were screaming just get out, don't wait on nothing. if you got some last-minute possessions, just forget them. judge go. -- just go. >> all you're thinking is i just left my dog, a dog that i love. >> the good news is that woman was able to reunite with her dog a couple of days later. president biden approved a disaster declaration which will help with the recovery efforts, including some temporary housing. the season's first named storm, tropical storm alberto,

weakened and dissipated over mexico yesterday, but not before it left four people dead. video shows the swollen santa catarina river rushing through the city of monterrey, mexico, as rain washed out a roadway. texas is still dealing with storm surge and heavy winds. governor abbott issued a disaster declaration for 51 counties there. turning to the race now for the white house. federal filings show donald trump and the republican national committee raised $141 million in may. that means he out-raised president joe biden by more than $60 million last month. that includes tens of millions that were donated to trump following his conviction in his so-called hush-money case. trump and biden go face to face in a debate thursday. in a coin toss president biden won and got to pick which podium he wants. he picked the right side while former president trump will get the last word. trump, making news this week by

saying if elected he will push for a program to give foreign students green cards after they graduate, a move that goes against restrictions he imposed as president. the empire state strikes a major blow to social media companies. new york governor hochul signed a landmark bill into law that restricts tech companies from targeting children with addictive feeds. the governor sat down for an interview with cbs news senior business and connect correspondent jo ling kent to discuss this revolutionary measure. >> reporter: with the flick of a pen, new york governor kathy hochul cemented a new law restricting social media companies from using addictive algorithms in feeds targeting kids. >> we're seeing the effects in suicide rates. teenagers are in the throes of depression. >> reporter: she sat down with cbs news for an exclusive interview. why did new york choose to target the algorithm? >> for the most important part -- in order to liberate our children, we have to get right to the source of the trauma that's being inflicted on them.

>> reporter: in this first of a kind state law no suggested posts will be allowed in kids' fees. no related notifications from midnight until 6:00 a.m. without parental consent. and new age verification tools will be set by the state attorney general. if the platforms do not comply, they can be fined up to $5,000 per violation. mom bernice tsai is cautiously optimistic. >> now there's a conversation of actually we can try take a crack at this, we can try to change it. it doesn't go far enough, but i think they're opening the door. >> reporter: netchoice which represents major tech companies like meta and google says the new law violates the first amendment by censoring content. >> at the end of the day, this a -- that's a decision that should be left up to parents, not government and not silicon valley. >> reporter: what's your response to that? >> our kids are in a special category. we don't let them buy cigarettes. we have guardrails to protect our young people before they

the airport. an air traffic controller notified the southwest pilots after an automated warning sounded shortly after midnight wednesday. data shows the plane descended to about 525 feet above the ground as it passed over oklahoma city suburbs on the way to the airport. the airline said the plane landed safely, though. new dna tests solve a 28-year-old double murder, and a fugitive has been captured. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the arkansas democrat gazette" reports a suspect in a string of oklahoma homicides has been found in arkansas. police arrested stacy lee drake in the city of morrilton yesterday after a two-day search. the 50-year-old was found in the woods about a half mile from a motel 6 where he had been spotted tuesday night. drake is accused of killing three people in oklahoma and one in alabama. authorities say he is a former federal inmate and had extensive -- an extensive criminal record.

"the virginia pilot" says the fbi has identified a serial rapist as the person responsible for the 1996 shenandoah national park killings. officials say recently retested dna evidence links walter "leo" jackson sr. of cleveland to the murders of julianne williams and laura winans. the victims' bodies were found by park rangers at their campsite. jackson, who authorities said was responsible for at least three other violent sexual assaults, died in prison in 2018. and "the san francisco chronicle" reports the fbi has raided the home of oakland's mayor sheng thao. fbi agents arrived at the property yesterday morning. they were seen carrying boxes from the home. agents served warrants at other homes and offices including california waste solutions. the company had previously been investigated over campaign contributions to oakland city

rickwood field hosted a major league baseball game. the san francisco giants took on the st. louis cardinals. the cardinals won 6-5. a blender recall you should know about, and the maker of one of the weight-loss drugs is sounding the alarm about fakes that are out there. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: two major u.s. stock indices dipped thursday after touching record highs earlier in the week. the dow gained 299 points. the nasdaq lost 140, and the s&p 500 lost 13 points. the world health organization and drugmaker eli lilly are warning people about counterfeit versions of weight-loss drugs. the w.h.o. said it fielded several reports of fake sema-glutide, the active ingredient in both wegovy and ozempic all around the world. in an open letter, eli lilly, the maker of mounjaro, said it was deeply concerned about growing online sales that used

phony or compounded versions of zepatide, the active ingredient in its drugs. eli lilly says people should never buy the drugs through social media or med spas. vitamix is recalling more than half a million blending containers and blade bases sold across the country. this after reports of more than two dozen lacerations. the manufacturer says the containers can separate from the blender's blade base which can then expose the blades and pose danger. anyone with the recalled products should contact vitamix for a protective plastic piece to attach over the blade base. and another fast food deal this summer. mcdonald's is introducing a $5 meal deal which includes four items -- you can pick a mcdouble or mcchicken, four-piece chicken mcnuggets, small fries, and a small soft drink. the deal is only available at participating restaurants and for a limited time. that's your cbs "moneywatch" report for this friday morning.
