plead guilty to a federal charge, ending a decade-long legal battle over the publication of classified documents. water worries, new flood concerns and new threats in the midwest as a dam nears its breaking point and rivers continue to rise. >> the florida panthers have won the stanley cup! top cat. the panthers edge out the oilers in a game seven thriller, winning their first championship. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with breaking news overnight. wikileaks founder julian assange is out of a british prison and he is on his way to a remote island in the pacific where he's expected to enter a guilty plea for violating the espionage act. a plane believed to be carrying the wikileaks founder landed in bangkok a short time ago. the deal will let him walk free, ending a legal case that spanned years and continue continentals for revealing state secrets.

cbs's jarred hill is joining us live with these really new developments. jarred, what's going on. >> this has been a years-long saga. we're expecting julian assange overnight -- at least tomorrow to face a u.s. commonwealth judge tomorrow. assange has long argued he only acted as a journalist when he published documents on the site wikileaks. now he's agreed to plead guilty to disclosing national defense information. >> reporter: video from wikileaks founder shows assange traveling from the uk. assange is expected to plead guilty tomorrow to one counts of espionage for his role in one of the biggest leaks of classified information recent u.s. history. the u.s. prosecutors are giving him credit for serving a little more than five years behind bars in london. he would have faced life in

prison if convicted of 18 koimts, most under the is pa nan act, for conspiring with army intelligence officer chelsea manning over documents involving the war in 2010. >> i think one takeaway here is that the u.s. government takes the situation seriously and that they tried very hard for years to extradite him to the u.s. >> reporter: assange supporters are cheering news of the plea deal. >> this is the first time in the 100-year history of the espionage act that a journalist, someone committing journalism, someone engaging in a journalistic act has been prosecuted under the is pa nan act for essentially receiving information and communicating information. >> reporter: he fled to london to escape extradition in sweden for charges of assault and rain.

the charges were dropped. during that time he released thousands of documents. in 2019 hoe was expelled from the uk and he was sentenced to 60 weeks in jail relating to the rape inquiry. assange is expected to return to australia after his plea. meanwhile chelsea manning was convicted and served time for violating the espionage act years ago in relation to all of this. >> jarred, this continues to unfold. it's fascinated. >> yes. >> thank you so much. >> thanks. back here at home to the deadly and destructive flooding in the midwest. nearly 3 million people in south dakota, a iowa, south dakota, and anybody are under continued threats as rivers continue to rise. in minnesota, a key dam partially failed, but officials say it's holding up at least for now, and they will continue to monitor the situation there. the floodwaters also took down a railroad bridge connecting iowa to south dakota. cbs's jonah kaplan has the latest.

>> reporter: in farm country rain is usually a blessing, but not like this. >> where do you start? >> reporter: jeremy and sarah frye took us inside their home to see if there was any part they could salvage. >> what part is so distressing? >> memories, marriage license. >> photo albums. >> everything downstairs. >> reporter: the little sioux river is cresting nearly 6 feet above its previous record. this neighborhood in spencer, it's about a half a mile away from the little sioux rush, and already you can see how high the water was and how much lower it's gotten. the cars were fully submerged. still, the disaster, it's really only begun. most of these folks here, they don't have flood insurance, including stephanie henrich who runs a center for sexual assault victims and a food bank. >> we help people, and now for the first time in a long time, i'm asking. >> reporter: an hour to the west, a levee gave way. another rush of water pouring

into this town of 4,000 residents. in mankato, minnesota, this 110-year-old dam failed, the state's governor calling out the national guard. >> we have about 18 inches of rain over the last couple of weeks. what's happened is we've inundated the ground. i think the term people are using is unprecedented. >> reporter: another term they're using is united. this couple lost their home of 35 years. >> we'll get through it. we always do. 48 years, we've been through a lot of things, and we'll get through this. well, now to the israel/hamas war. we're getting a look at newly released video showing the abduction of three hostages from the nova music festival on october 7th. of course, we want to warn you, some people are going to find this video disturbing. the video captures these people covered in blood in the ■back o a pickup truck that speeds through southern israel back

toward gaza. the militants holding the camera celebrates and praises god. the hostages' families authorized the release after the israeli army declassified the video. >> this very short video reminds people these are human beings. >> and we need the world to act now. there is apparently a deal that maybe we're getting close to. we keep on hearing that. let's get it done. >> meantime, more than 100 israeli families are suing unrwa for allegedly funding hamas and playing a key role in the october 7th attack. the lawsuit filed in federal court in manhattan accuses the agency of knowingly allowing hamas to siphon off $1 million in aid money to pay for its terror infrastructure, weapons, and explosives.

they have not commented saying they have yet to be served with the lawsuit. two days until the debate and president trump is changing his rhetoric when it comes to his opponent joe biden. also on the ballot, coming two years after the supreme court took away the widely recognized constitutional right to abortion. cbs's nancy cordes reports. >> reporter: protesters returned to the courts. since roe v. wade was reversed, nearly two dozen states have either banned or significantly restricted abortions. donald trump hailed the change in a new podcast interview. >> i got that done with the selection of three great justices. i got it done, and it was a big thing. >> reporter: several of his top vp contenders called it a big thing too. south carolina senator tim scott said two years ago today our prayers were answered, and florida senator marco rubio said, now america can lead in

being a pro-life/pro-family nation. >> we have seen attacks on ivf. >> reporter: in maryland, the current vice president argued a second trump term would lead to even more restrictions. >> now he wants us to believe he will not sign a national abortion ban. look, enough with the gaslighting. >> reporter: two years in, 60% of americans continue to believe that abortion should be legal in all or most cases, according to a brand-new cbs poll. about half of likely voters say abortion will be a major factor for them in november. >> get me back to the white house, and i'll fight like hell to fight roe v. wade and protect american freedom. >> reporter: trump huddled with advisers at camp david prepping for thursday's debate. >> how should i handle him?

on wall street as it took another hit. the dow gained 260 points, the nasdaq was down 192 points, and the s&p 500 lost 16 points. big american music labels are suing artificial intelligent song generators for copyright infringement. the suit was brought by labels including sony music entertainment, universal music group, and warner records. it alleges the ai startups are exploiting artists' work. the cases were filed in boston and new york. hooters says a select number of underperforming restaurants will close their doors for good. the restaurant chain did not say which chains will shut down or when. it will still operate domestically and internationally while launching hooter frozen products as grocery stores. and the busy travel season
