wikileaks founder julian assange pleads guilty to a federal charge and heads home to australia with time served. first, waterlogged. homes destroyed, roadways collapsed, and a concern about a dam at risk of failing. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it has been the hottest, wettest start for summer ever in some areas, all made more likely by climate change. the raging floodwaters are still causing havoc across the midwest. new video of a minnesota dam shows one home that was teetering on the edge as now -- has now fallen into a river. cbs' tom hanson has the latest. >> reporter: the raging floodwaters swallowed land and trees and partially breached the rapidan dam. officials here are monitoring the 114-year-old dam around the clock as rushing water continues to erode the soil. tens of thousands of residents who live in the surrounding

watershed are also keeping a close eye on the situation. the barnes family has been here for more than 50 years. >> we never, ever thought in a million years this would ever happen. and here it is. >> reporter: more than three million people across four states live in areas impacted by the flooding. sections of the mississippi and missouri rivers are still on the rise. this was the moment a rail bridge connecting iowa and south dakota collapsed. part of it is submerged in the big sioux river which crested at a record 45 feet. cbs' jonah kaplan is in south dakota. >> reporter: i'm jonah kaplan in hard-hit union county, south dakota. the images, they speak for themselves. that house over there, falling into the ground. this road cut in half. and it's all, what, from a hurricane? no. and not from an earthquake. it's from a flood. all those downpours over the weekend. did this house just sink into the ground? >> yep. just -- he rolled the ground away and dropped down. >> reporter: sheriff jim prouty

showed us around the mccook lake neighborhood where he says between 50 and 60 homes were damaged. >> it's beyond words. to us it's a situation. to the families, the homeowners, this is their lives. >> reporter: south dakota governor kristi noem -- >> this is extensive damage that has changed people's lives forever. the ripple effect is going to be felt long term. >> reporter: the water closed a section of i-29. crews removed enough mud and debris to reopen the interstate. in minnesota the water is receding slowly, but the danger isn't over. >> that was cbs' tom hanson reporting. now to politics and a rough night for trump and progressives. in new york, a big upset in the most expensive congressional primary in american history. squad members jamaal bowman was trounced by george latimer in a race that highlighted the party's deep divide over israel. in colorado lauren boebert won her republican primary after switching to a more conservative district.

cbs' jarred hill joins us now with a complete wrap-up of the big races. >> reporter: talk about complete wrap-up, this was a jam-packed primary night. the new york race shows how some democrats may move forward in their criticism of israel ahead of november. george latimer, a moderate democrat serving as a county executive, celebrated tuesday night after winning the democratic congressional primary for new york's 16th district. >> and if you hold a strong belief, you still must work with other people who don't share that belief because america hangs in the balance. >> reporter: a not-so-veiled reference to the incumbent he defeated. two-term progressive democrat jamaal bowman. the former middle school principal has called israel's actions in its war with hamas a genocide and criticized latimer who received millions from outside pro-israel american political lobbying groups. in his concession speech bowman remained steadfast in his criticism of israel.

>> god help us build a better world where everyone understands when we say free palestine it is not anti-semitic. >> reporter: bowman was also dogged by controversy, pleading guilty to pulling the capitol fire alarm last year during votes. he'll finish up the term but won't be back next january. likely to return to washington, conservative u.s. representative lauren boebert of colorado. >> america will rise again. >> reporter: she won the republican primary in colorado's right-leaning fourth district, only recently moving there to avoid a tough re-election bid. voters seemed unfazed by this video of boebert getting kicked out of a denver theater after causing a disturbance. in the state next door, u.s. representative john curtis won utah's gop primary for the u.s. senate seat mitt romney is vacating. >> if you expect me to be mitt romney i'm going to disappoint you. >> reporter: like romney he is a moderate republican and was not the candidate endorsed by former president trump.

some of these primary wins all but certainly named the winner of the general, but there are still competitive races to wash -- to watch out for in november. back to you. >> all really interesting and expensive. jarred hill in new york, thanks. so we are a day away from the first presidential debate, and president biden and former president trump are preparing in very different ways. biden has been at camp david for several days now with advisers where they're holding mock debates. aides are playing the roles of trump and the moderators, trying to anticipate what attacks and what questions he might face. trump has been on the campaign trail talking about biden and doing interviews. cbs news will bring you complete coverage of the first presidential debate hosted by cnn tomorrow night starting at 8:00 p.m. eastern on our streaming network cbs news 24/7. the live simulcast of the debate here on cbs will begin at 9:00 p.m. eastern. wikileaks founder julian assange headed home to australia

a free man after pleading guilty to violating the u.s. espionage act. assange appeared in a federal court in u.s. pacific territory of saipan. he pleaded guilty to obtaining and publishing secret military and diplomatic documents in 2010. under the agreement with the justice department, he was sentenced to the five years he already spent in a london prison fighting extradition to the u.s. "wall street journal" reporter evan gershkovich is in a russian courtroom today for the start of his closed door espionage trial. he was seen standing in a glass box in the courtroom before the proceeding began, proceedings, rather, began. russia claims that he was gathering secret information about a defense contractor on behalf of the cia but has not presented any evidence. gershkovich, the "journal," and the u.s. government deny the allegations. u.n. officials told israel they will suspend aid operations across gaza unless urgent steps are taken to protect humanitarian workers.

this criticism comes as the israeli military released video it says shows hamas firing a projectile at humanitarian routes near a unicef aid convoy and idf soldiers yesterday. meanwhile, the u.s. military is giving its floating pier another go at delivering much-needed aid. and they invited reporters along to see the operation firsthand. cbs' imtiaz tyab got that up-close look. >> reporter: we traveled across the eastern mediterranean with u.s. forces to gaza's devastated central coast, among the first journalists to visit the $230 million humanitarian platform. we saw trucks carrying pallets of food aid in the besieged palestinian territory. since this pier became operational two months ago, only around 400 aid trucks like this have come off it. the need in gaza just over there is desperate.

before the october 7th attacks, over 500 truckloads of aid would enter gaza in a single day. >> all i know is my objective is to get as many supplies as i can into gaza for the people of gaza. >> reporter: the pier has been plagued by problems and has only been fully operational for a total of 16 days. but when israeli forces rescued four hostages in gaza earlier this month in an operation that killed over 270 palestinians, an israeli military helicopter was seen taking off from the beach in front of the pier prompting the world food program to suspend operations there over concerns it had been compromised. >> this is a command -- part here. it was not part of any operation. it's focused on humanitarian assistance. that's my mission. >> reporter: and critics of the pier say president biden should have instead focused on pressuring israel to reopen all land crossings for aid trucks

on the "morning newsstand"." "the pittsburgh tribune review" reports the head of the ntsb says norfolk southern tried to interfere with the agency's investigation into last year's train derailment in east palestine, ohio. the ntsb also confirmed that a flaming wheel bearing caused the derailment. video showed the bearing was on fire for more than 20 miles before the accident, but track-side sensors failed to detect it. the ntsb also said the decision burn off hazardous chemicals which sent flames and smoke into the air was unnecessary. "tulsa world" says the oklahoma supreme court ruled the approval of what would be the nation's first state-funded catholic charter school is unconstitutional. the court decided the contract between the state board and the religious charter school must be rescinded. the state's attorney general had warned the board not to approve the contract, but the board went ahead with it anyway.

supporters including the catholic church said they will consider all legal options. and "people" says los angeles police believe multiple people should be charged in connection with actor matthew perry's death according to a law enforcement source. the former "friends" star was found dead in his pool last year. his death was ruled accidental, but an autopsy report showed he died from the effects of ketamine and factors including drowning.
