and right now in the afc. edition, we're following breaking news. a tragic day for the oakland fire dept. mourning the loss of 1 of their own. a 3rd generation. firefighter. who drowned at a san diego beach. good afternoon. i'm ryan yamamoto in the last hour. oakland fire chief speaking out about the 25 year old firefighter. the ground overnight at the beach caden laughin graduated from the fire academy 5 years ago was

stationed in west oakland. fire chief damon covington's says it was in san diego for the firefighters. summer olympics and while at the beach you got caught up in the ocean and apparently drowned. early. this morning. he's a rising star in our department. he was very anxious to learn about every aspect of the fire department. came up in a fire family. he was 3rd generation firefighter. so he understood what the fire department and fire services is all about. and he was in with completely in on being the best firefighters could be. >ryan>the chief mentioned kate in comes from a family of firefighters. his father a decorated assistant fire chief, also died 4 years ago. in the line of duty. after suffering a heart attack. it was only 42. years old. cadence brother is in the fire academy and his mother provides pier. support for the department. the chief says he will travel to san diego today to help bring kate

and home. these are live pictures from station 3 were cadence served just a short time ago. a flag. was hung and in his honor. how had he been working, caden would have been responding to this warehouse fire on 24. street in west oakland. in fact, the chief says some of his peers learned of his death at the scene. a fire broke out just after 10 last night. you can see at it was completely engulfed in flames. 75. firefighters responded, and worked overnight at 6:00. this morning that building was still smoldering. warehouse, which housed a roofing company is a total loss. causes. is still under investigation, but firefighters say it started outside the building. well, the supreme court just hours ago, handing down a major abortion decision to procedural ruling means the state of idaho can allow abortions in medical emergencies, at least for now. the case focused on a clash between idaho's near total ban and federal law, which requires hospitals that accept medicare to provide stabilizing

treatment, including abortion care to a mother. whose health is in serious risk. during those arguments. in april, justices pressed the state on medical emergencies like sepsis and hemorrhaging. >within these rare cases, there's a significant number where the woman is her life is not in peril, but she's going to lose her reproductive organs. she's going to lose the ability to have children in the future. unless and abortion takes place. >ryan>ruling is expected to have implications for more than a dozen states that have adopted near total bans on abortion. >so i'm doctors will see this as a of relief. it also is a very strong signal. to lawmakers and also those who are not lawmakers but are working in administrative government that they should stand down. >ryan>but the court did not address the underlying question of whether the federal law trumps idaho's law in certain circumstance. and the case is likely to return to the high court. down the road. and another closely watched cases.

supreme court rejected. a 10 billion 0 settlement. in hospitals and individual victims of the opioid crisis. this case involved the sackler family and purdue pharma. the maker of oxycontin. justices rejected the bankruptcy. settlement because it would have shield the sackler from further liability. that decision could have an impact on other mass lawsuits, including 1 involving the catholic archdiocese. in the boy scouts of america. just a matter of hours, president joe biden, former president trump will meet on a stage in the land over the very 1st. presidential debate of 2020. jared hill is in atlanta with a preview of tonight, including a set of debate rules. both candidates have agreed to >yes. he didn't take them president snow, honest, it's a very unforgettable chaos of the 2020. presidential debates. >radical left, would you shut up? with moderators hope to avoid tonight when president biden and former president trump head to head for the 1st time in 4 years each

>ryan>with the growing popularity of women's sports can be measured and major events. locally. and nationally. even the new wnba franchise right here in the bay area to the viewership of the tournament, this past spring. shawn chitnis introduces us to a young woman giving young female athletes a platform by creating a sports league for them. on the peninsula. ariel castillo knew something. was missing soon. after she joined the boys and girls club of the peninsula. >could see that girls needed a safe space to play meaning like they needed a little bit of structure and they needed to have a female presence around. to feel comfortable in the gym, ariel has loved basketball, all her life and wanted to make sure more girls could enjoy the sport. and all the benefits that come with it. >we're open to everybody. where a safe space a critical factor in the league is making sure it's accessible to as many families who want to have their girls joint to free league also gives students of all backgrounds the

least not today, definitely next week. let's check in with meteorologist jessica burch. we have beautiful weather throughout the santa clara valley as we head into this afternoon daytime highs today are sitting in the 70s and the 80s, anywhere from san jose over in a loss. cotto's with 80s off into the east bay throughout this afternoon now we have a big change in the forecast within the next 7 days areas like antioch all the way down into livermore. we're going to see triple digits heading into early next week we'll have more on that coming up in just a bit. let's dive back into today, though, because it's beautiful. this afternoon. with some breezy conditions near san francisco and oakland daytime highs today they're sitting in the 60s. seventies. with 70s and 80s all the way north across the golden gate bridge up into marin since sonoma and napa as well. as we take a look at those wind speeds will notice it mostly along our coastline, getting pretty breezy with about 30 to 35 mile per hour wind gust in areas like bodega bay down into san francisco. close to around dinner time we continue to watch those windy conditions last into the afternoon hours, especially in our inland areas. but our temperature outlook

issued by the climate prediction center is showing well above normal temperatures for the next 6 to 10 days, which leads us up into 4th of july, right around the corner, so let's take a look at the next 7 days, starting off with our inland areas where daytime highs will hit the triple digits. as early as next monday notice all the sunshine too. today and tomorrow we're still holding on tight to the 80s, so enjoy this weather while we have it. we have 90s, both saturday. and sunday. you'll notice a shift in the weather pattern. it'll be a lot drier a lot sunnier, to and of course we hold on. to those those triple digits heading into next monday. tuesday and wednesday with 4th of july right around the corner for us, so let's head over to the bay where it's just a little bit cooler. and we turn the temperatures down just a notch. suddenly we're talking about 70s in the forecast for us along the bay shore line. still with those cool and cloudy conditions especially in the morning hours. lifting into the afternoon with sunny skies once we had in a monday and tuesday of next week, though, we're getting rid of that marine layer. we're going to see plenty of sunshine gearing up for 4th of july. with hot temperatures right around the corner, too.

as a teenager miles levin. would volunteer at a summer camp for young people with epilepsy. >start carter. around. yeah. yeah. understood. what it was like to walk in their shoes. experience. 2 seizures at their age empathized with their suffering. yeah. yeah. to fight the stigma. santa rosa native drought in directed under the lights and 2019. a short film that sheds light on the neurological condition. set mostly in a restroom. the stories about a teenager who goes to prom knowing full well that the lights will trigger a seizure. >it's something that most kids can very conveniently take for granted and but for those who miss out who feel left behind. it is. this particular particularly traumatizing. we built our set

after the 9 minute short won awards at film festivals. across the country miles crowdfunded more than 214. toward the production of a full length movie. now and editing miles hopes the movie will create more understanding. about a community with which feels forgotten. >i want the audience to feel those universal feelings. and to say wow. that must be hard. that's not my experience, but i've been there. i felt left out. i felt misunderstood. don't call my mom. the film explores a range of emotions from parents. fear of watching for the next seizure. to the young person living with epilepsy. who wants to live a full life. miles, says people he's heard from feel scene. >there's tremendous power. in seeing someone like you on screen. legitimizes you. it makes you just like everyone else. in fact, miles says he's overwhelmed with the response and art. he's gotten from fans all over the world.
