tonight. we begin with sad news for baseball fans. hall of fame slugger and giants legend orlando cepeda has died at the age of 86. he was one of the first puerto rican players to star in the major leagues. his family said he died peacefully at his bay area home while listening to his favorite music and surrounded by his loved ones. giants announcers broke the news to fans at oracle park at the top of the sixth inning during tonight's game against the dodgers and held a moment of silence. >> what a tough time it is for our giants. tonight we lost our friend orlando cepeda. >> it hurts to lose him. and it is such a gentle soul. he was such a good man, just like willie mays, we saw him at the ballpark all the time. love being around the giants. and he would just light up. walking

into the ballpark. >> these past two weeks have been tough for giants fans. we lost another giants legend and fellow hall of famer last week at 93 years old. matt lively joining me in studio now with a look at orlando cepeda's life and legacy. >> reporter: yeah, along with mays, orlando cepeda was another future hall of famer when the giants arrived in san francisco from new york. for more on the life of the baby bull, here is vern glenn. >> i play with the great willie mays, which i learned so much from him and with the great hank aaron, the best teammate, a great friend. i played with bob gibson. >> reporter: the giants moved to san francisco in 1958, and

willie mays was the headliner. but it was the 20-year-old puerto rican that took the city by storm. orlando cepeda won rookie of the year in 1958, hitting 96 rbis. he could not only hit home runs, but he could play the conga drums, dance to the cha chas, and played with the giants in 1962 and on deck when willie mccovey was at the plate. >> and a liner strike to richardson, the game is over in the world series. >> reporter: it was the emergence that forced them to move from first base to the outfield. but the baby bull struggled with knee problems and traded in 1956 for the pitcher in one of the most lopsided trades in baseball history. he won the mvp in 1967. he led the cardinals to a world series title over the red sox. he retired in 1974 after a

17-year career hitting .379 home runs. he was elected to the hall of fame by the veterans committee in 1999. >> believe me, i had a wonderful life. i'm a very lucky person to be born with the skills to play baseball. and to baseball, i would escape poverty. through baseball, i will build a name for myself. >> he was so beloved and survived by his wife and five children and his nine grandchildren. >> and imagine that announcement being made today as a giants fan hearing another legend has passed. i also want to tell you about this. vern tweeted out this tribute writing that cepeda only called her vernon, never vern, and that it has been a tough ten days. live outside oracle park,

talking to fans. and what have you been hearing about the heartbreaking news? >> it is really tough for the giants fans as of late and passed in 2018. he just passed ten days ago and now orlando cepeda, there were a lot of tears and some broken hearts as the giants made the announcement inside the stadium tonight. >> it brought my heart to my throat. he's one of the old guys and one of the legends of baseball. my first thought is that he probably felt heartbroken at the passing of willie mays. and he decided to join them. >> and everybody respected him so much and it is a sad thing, but his legacy will live on. >> reporter: cepeda, along with mays and mccovey were great

ambassadors of the game and connected giants fans of memories. he won the rookie of the year award in 1958, the first year the giants played baseball in san francisco . fans remember him on and off the field. >> you never heard anything negative from him. he exemplified what i think an ambassador of baseball, not just the giants, but modern baseball. and it was not him. >> back live here where they stand, people have been remembering the life of another hall of famer that wore the

could see next. that's a whole different ball game where you won't be able to choose to live on the streets if we offer you a place to go. that's a different story. >> some critics say the ruling will give cities the green light to arrest more homeless people when they clear encampments. all right, now we go to oakland where the line to get inside city hall is stretched out tonight and there were fireworks. plenty of frustrations on how to handle the budget crisis. city council members are considering proposals that could slash tens of millions of dollars and cut other city programs. so there were heated moments. that's the fireworks. tonight some leaders admitted they don't have any good options. >> and they're all horrible choices. any of us, public, council members, anybody out there anywhere, that just complains about each of the

choices and doesn't pick one, you know, that's not okay. we got to pick one. we have to pick one. we have no choice. >> and i really, it is sad that people are yelling and starting in january. >> order in the chamber, one person speaking at a time. i would really like to respectfully ask everyone to allow the council members to present their proposals. >> okay, so when it came time to public comments, some disgruntled residents called out the city council members and the fair share of workers who demanded leadership. >> i mean come on, you saw all this. you're driving the destruction. >> it seems like we are always in a crisis. we need leadership if we can't get it from them and the mayor, then we need it from you. >> the city employees, all of us sitting here, we sacrificed. >> so even though the city is under pressure to act fast, council members didn't vote tonight and they say they will revisit the budget again next

week. well, it is a tight presidential race. and biden argues his opponent, donald trump, is a threat to the very future of american democracy. biden had hoped last night's debate would tip the favor, the race in his favor. instead today, he's facing calls to step aside. the editorial board published this scathing headline to serve his country, biden should leave the race. nancy cordes has more on the fallout. >> i know i'm not a young man. state the obvious. >> reporter: campaigning in north carolina this afternoon, president biden sought to reassure voters. even as he acknowledged what they all saw last night. >> i don't walk as easy as i used to or speak as smoothly as i used to. i don't debate as well as i used to. but i know what i do know. i know how to tell the truth. i know right

temp down the concerns. >> stay the course. >> we saw integrity on one side and dishonesty on the other. that's how i saw it. >> reporter: and yet it was biden's struggle to counter trump's dishonesty last night that has democrats down ballot worried. >> he wants open borders. i'm the one that got that insulin down for the seniors. he wants to raise your taxes by four times. >> the fact of the matter is he's dead wrong. >> reporter: trump held a victory rally today in chesapeake, virginia. >> despite the fact that crooked joe biden spent the entire week at camp david resting, working, studying. he studied very hard and he studied so hard that he did not know what he was doing. >> reporter: the republican house speaker argued biden should be removed from office. >> under the constitution, of course, it's the cabinet that will make that decision. i would. i would ask them to search their hearts. >> reporter: we asked voters around the country what they thought. >> he's not the perfect candidate, but trump is a convicted criminal. >> i'm not going to give up on

right. >> he says he has been looking for a home in newark for more than ten years, but the asking prices have been too high according to zillow. the average price is $1.3 million. he plans to move to oxnard, but had a message for others going through the same thing. >> let that hit you, man. i'm 47 years old. i'm a three-term council member in my community and i need to move in with my grandma. >> bank of america has warned high housing prices will likely remain an issue across the country until at least 2026. let's turn to the forecast as we head into the last weekend in june. it's going to be pretty pleasant out there. the real heat is still looming. way off the coast. that big

area of high pressure and the big h on the map is edging closer to the coast as we head into early next week. once they set up camp overhead, that's where it will become a heat dome and where the temperatures are really going to spike as we head into early july. so let's take a look at where we topped out today, which is pleasant. our temperatures were close to average in most parts of the bay area. up to 90 degrees in santa rosa. and low 70s in san francisco, and made it up into the low 80s in fremont and the low to mid-90s inland with temperatures reaching up to exactly 60 degrees at half moon bay. it will be a degree warmer tomorrow. get excited. temperatures in the santa clara valley, getting into the mid to upper 80s today. tomorrow's temperatures will be similar. let's take a look at where we are as we look outside. the view here with the temperatures in the 50s and the 60s for most

of us. holding on for a little bit of warmth with the temperatures into the 80s. some fog developing spreading across the bay early. inland, you'll have to be up pretty early to see it because it will retreat out of the inland valleys by mid to late morning and even back away from the coast as we would head towards midday. you should see cool sunshine for coastal parts of the bay area. temperatures tonight dropping down a little further. just the warmer spots around 60 degrees. highs above the bay, closer to 5 degrees above normal inland, but close to normal for late june. right along the coast, upper 70s to the 80s with the mid to upper 70s. the temperatures inland in the east bay. a few upper 80s. a lot of the hotter spots getting into the upper half already. temperatures close to 70 for

san francisco. mid to upper 80s for some in the north bay. the temperatures will continue to climb on monday and tuesday and even into wednesday. but in san francisco, things are looking great for pride weekend. temperatures just short of 70 tomorrow and then right at 70 degrees on sunday. pleasant conditions for the parade on sunday morning. i don't think that june gloom will be a factor for the last day of june. but further inland, the heat is the big story. talking about heat, the big ten-day outlook. temperatures climbing on monday. but the real spike is going to be tuesday and wednesday. even once we back down for the fourth of july and the day after on friday, we are talking about temperatures still around 100 degrees for inland parts of the bay area. let's check out your seven-day forecast. we are talking about a mix of upper 90s on thursday and friday. the real peak will be on tuesday and wednesday. that's why we have the excessive heat watch in effect for so much in the bay area. temperatures around the bay will reach up into the 80s on the widespread basis is, but we won't have the gusty offshore

winds to push that hot air down towards the water. some offshore winds could develop. we will continue to revise the forecast. along the coast, you'll see more sunshine as the heat builds inland. the heat will avoid the coast staying below 70 degrees. be ready for some crowds to flock your way along the coast. >> okay. i went for a walk on my dinner break. check this out. it was so gorgeous. this is at the ferry building and market street. look at these. these are the lasers. they made their debut tonight. so there were six of them in 2022. as i checked it out tonight, there were 20. they commemorate the 20th anniversary, so it shoots down market street and the beams go from the ferry building and over twin peaks. paul, the music you hear there, it was just a band, kind of a

the news of the passing was announced during the giants, dodgers game and they found a perfect way to honor the hall of famer. bottom of the sixth, matt chapman crushes the home run into the 3-2 lead. same score in the ninth, trying to close it out, but they drive one to center. elliott ramos can't make the catch that goes off his glove. he has in the third with the triple, later scored on the sac fly to tie that game. in the bottom of the eighth inning, he launches one towards the water canyon's walk off two run shot. he was happy. but i don't think anyone was more excited than ramos and they beat them 5-3. what a way to pay tribute to orlando cepeda.

a's in the arizona desert visiting the defending national league champs and the top of the ninth. he connects his third home run of the inning, snapping their five game losing streak. as you saw earlier, they hosted the northern colorado owls at the park. a rough night and the top of the second. capping the inning for the owls and northern colorado would cruise to a 15-1 win. we will finish this loaded sports cast with the niners. posting a video on instagram live on friday morning and him driving into levi's stadium. it was important he met earlier in the week and still no extension deal has been announced yet. we're in vegas covering them in the super bowl if they want to get there this year. he'll play a big part of that. >> please sign that man. >> how about that? if you're going to be in that draft pick,

announced at the sphere in vegas, what a place, right? >> do you stick around and say hey, can we stay for the residency? >> i know, that's pretty cool. up next, they helped rescue this little kitten stuck on the highway. he has saved that kitty for a second time. what's going on? all right, let's end this on a heartwarming story about a chp officer committen by a kitten. it's not your typical day for an officer, ryan moore. a few weeks ago, he was called

to help running across highway 101. and he would try to stop and scoop the kitten up, but it darted away into traffic, but don't worry. he decided that cat wasn't getting away and shut down a stretch of the highway, that's right. he called in the worker you see right there to help in with the rescue effort. the cat and mouse game got even more complicated when the kitten hid inside one of the parked cars. i know, it took lowering the camera to remove the car parts to get her out, but they did. and officer moore was very happy that the kitten made it to a shelter safe and sound, ready for adoption. who better to adopt the kitten. how does this end now? than the one who rescued her. here officer moore along with his kids. come on, dad. >> keep her out of the garage. >> there is their newly adopted kitten in the arms and the decision to save the kitten on the freeway and the decision to

adopt both came naturally. >> when i realized she was going to stay out thereon the freeway, that i have to do everything that i can to try to save this cat because that's the livelihood of her staying out there and it is obviously pretty good. i thought it was the proper ending to the story and she's super cute and pureeing to rescue her and adopt her, so it is pretty nice. >> in honor of the chp officers who saved her. the kitten has been named, what do you think? chippy. >> not ponch. but look at that. meow. it's all fun and games. >> they're stoked. best day ever and look at what we get
