so excited about tonight. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hi, i'm sara donchey. >> i'm paul heggen. >> so paul, it is about to be scorching across the bay area. we are leading our show with this tonight, because it is a big deal. it's going to be hot and for of long time. >> yes, this is the longest stretch of prolonged hot weather that we've had so far this season. so just kind of brace yourself for it. >> we are trying. it was already hot today. we saw people head out to the beach and seek refuge on the water. some people hanging in the shade where they could find it at the park. paul, you always warn dog owners about paw burns when it gets this hot out. this week we will be the perfect time for people to protect their dog's paws and be smart about it. especially in the inland areas where it's going to get really hot. >> see this pup rocking those little booties that protect

their paws from burns. >> that can't feel good. tomorrow the heat wave, we know it's coming, i guess my question is is it actually going to be record break something. >> it's going to be close. right now we're not forecasting record-setting temperatures, but we're within four, five degrees or so. talk about the heat advisories and excessive heat warnings in effect for the bay area that go into effect tomorrow and continue all the way through saturday. so most inland parts of the bay area, in fact, all inland parts of the bay area are under that excessive heat warning which means a high risk of heat exhaustion, heat illness, even for folk who is aren't ordinarily sensitive to the heat. you can't get much relief during the overnight hours. it's a heat advisory right around the bay. that's where temperatures are going to be into the 80s and low 90s. tomorrow it's # 0 degrees even in san francisco, above 90 in oakland and close to 20 degrees above average inland. 108 in concord. and we are going to have offshore winds developing. a red flag warning in effect right now, went into effect at

the top of the hour. greatest concern is likely going to be in northeastern napa county, western solano county. we'll zoom in on that in a few minutes. if that wasn't enough, air quality is a concern. the same air mass trapping the heat at ground level also trapping urban pollution. so into that unhealthy for sensitive groups range for inland parts of the east bay and the santa clara valley tomorrow. likely again on wednesday, maybe even into thursday and friday too. >> yeah, so we're going to have to pay attention to that and a whole lot of other things. we're going to get into it all tonight. we sent our kelsi thorud over to san jose to show us how people there are getting ready for this marathon heat wave. >> reporter: well, the heat is on in the south bay with temperatures expected to exceed 100 degrees over the next few days. people across the city are getting creative when it comes to ways to cool down, but first responders are focussing on the potential fire danger that could come with the combination of this heat wave

and the fourth of july. what better way to beat the heat than a splash through the fountains in downtown san jose? >> it's always nice and cool in the water. got shade under the trees too. >> reporter: families flocked to the fountains monday as temperatures hit the 90s, and this is just the beginning. the heat is expected to top 100 degrees over the next few days. >> i have a pool at my apartment, so i'll probably swim there. yeah. >> or maybe go to the beach. >> yeah. >> reporter: that seems to be a common theme. many people we spoke with told us they're already making plans to head out of town towards some place a little cooler. >> go to the ocean. >> yeah. >> the beach. >> we might go to half moon bay or maybe santa cruz. we'll see. >> reporter: but while some people are escaping to cooler temperatures, first responders back here are preparing for what could be a dangerous combination, a heat ewave and the fourth of july. san jose police posted on social media

reminding people that all fireworks are illegal in the city and can be very dangerous in conditions like this. people we spoke with told us they understand that but still expect to see some people breaking the rules. >> i feel like there's always more fireworks every year, and just about the same amount of fires. but not much that i think is going to change, honestly. >> reporter: but of course, the hope is, especially in conditions like we are expecting this year that everyone will celebrate this holiday safely. >> cities across the bay area are opening up cooling centers. you can head to our website, kpix.com, to find one near you and monitor the weather where you live specifically. kelsi touched on this a bit. the combination of these triple digit temperatures and really dry grass in places all over the bay area. that has firefighters a little anxious in some places and to reduce wildfire risk, pg&e says it

could shut off power to 12,000 customers. most of the customers are in shasta county, though others are included in this possibility. pg&e says it's contacted anyone who could be impacted by safety shutoffs. with fourth of july almost here, firefighters are also on alert for people setting off illegal fireworks like those that was, i believe, in the mission district last year in san francisco. and last night firefighters in san francisco say a camera caught an illegal firework that sparked up a brush fire near mclaren park. that fire was able to burn about three acres before firefighters were able to put it out. and it's not just the risk of starting a fire. doctors are warning people about major injuries. >> these can and will blow off your fingers and your hands. we see these every year. unfortunately, these types of injuries are not reparable in most circumstances and that,

obviously, is life altering. >> and if that doesn't convince you that fireworks can do much damage, calfire says watch this. yeah, they posted this video with dramatic music of fake limbs being blown to pieces while holding fireworks to demonstrate the kind of damage some of these things can do. oakland police say they seized this haul of illegal fireworks, almost 100 pounds worth. they cited one person after getting tipped off about somebody selling fireworks out of their trunk this weekend. we saw people setting off fireworks in downtown san jose tonight when soccer fans took over the street. colombia takes on brazil tomorrow at levi stadium in copa america. colombia fans flooded the street in front of the hilton hotel. looks like they were trying to catch a glimpse of some of the colombia soccer players. we don't know if it was them for sure, but we did

spot a group of men that people were cheering at all wearing matching shirts. yeah, futbol fans are ededicated. we're not surprised about that. we did see people climbing trees and hopping on top of a sculpture, so got a little rowdy. the crowd did disperse about an hour ago. we saw a line of police moving in, blocking off the street, but things seemed to stay peaceful for the most part. dynasties do not last forever. you had the shaq and kobe eduo in l.a., the big three on the celtics in the '80s, and of course, who can forget the michael jordan era with the chicago bulls. now, for dubs fans, it was the splash brothers plus draymond. and now they are breaking up. warriors fans had a lot to sort through when they got the news today that klay thompson is leaving the team. >> i think it's a bummer. i think they should have tried a

at least 30 passengers were hurt when strong turbulence rocked a flight headed for madrid to uruguay. this is video of some of the aftermath. seats were broken, oxygen masks were hanging down. this was on an air europa plane. some passengers say the plane

suddenly went into a nosedive. people who didn't have their seat belts on ended up hitting the ceiling. people had fractures and injuries to their arms, and legs. the flight had to make an emergency landing in brazil because of all this. these nasa images show the eye of hurricane beryl as seen from space. the storm is leaving a trail of destruction in the caribbean tonight, and it is breaking records. it became the earliest category 5 hurricane on record, shattering the old record by more than two weeks when hurricane emily hit on july 17th in 2005. all right, paul, check this out, the storm was churning up waves so strong it was breaking up boats on the island of saint vincent. obviously, this is really scary, especially for places that just are not really equipped for hurricane force winds and waves like this. >> yeah, and they're usually prepared for hurricane season. a you mentioned, this is awfully early in the season. the storm has just gotten stronger since then. we're actually going to start our weathercast by talking about

this category 5 hurricane, which has strengthened even further. now has 165-mile-an-hour sustained winds. zooming in for a closer look, the more symmetrical a hurricane is, the stronger the storm is. that's a general rule of thumb. this thing is incredibly well organized. it's compact, not a huge storm, but it's powerful and it's going to continue tracking to the west. its next target is going to be jamaica, a major category 3 hurricane as it approaches that island on wednesday morning. continuing to progress to the east and weakening before it hits the yucatan peninsula. but extreme ocean temperatures are fuelling this extreme storm. and it's extreme weather of a different sort impacting us. that is that heat dome that is going to be building in over the course of the next several days. the peak of the hit tomorrow and wednesday, but it's still cray sir hot through the fourth of july weekend. even bayside temperatures are up into the 90s in many locations tomorrow. notice these orange spots in

northern napa county and western solano county, parts of the mie comma range especially are seeing the gustiest offshore winds developing during the overnight hours and low humidity levels. and that's where the fire threat is maximized for the next couple of days. the entire bay area has that threat, especially with the fourth of july holiday looming right around the corner. temperatures still warm inland but backing down to the mid-70s in concord. 59 degrees the current pleasant temperature in san francisco. but inland temperatures are only going to drop down to the 60s for the most part by early tomorrow morning. low to mid-60s in the santa clara valley down to just beelow 60 degrees in morgan hill. that's the exception. temperatures far inland in the east bay staying in the low 70s in antioch. it's part of the problem. when the heat builds in like this, our overnight low temperatures don't drop low at all except near the water. 50s along the bay and near the coast. but as the heat really intensifies tomorrow, wednesday morning's low temperatures are likely going to be even warmer than

tomorrow morning. this is part of the danger, we don't have any real time for the heat to escape off into space overnight. it's a cumulative effect, wears you down, especially when temperatures are getting up close to 110 degrees from fairfield to antioch, brentwood. 107 for livermore and 100 in san jose. 80 in san francisco. above 90 degrees in oakland. want relief? well, the familiar spots staying in the low 70s along the coast. ten degrees above average. mentioned earlier we're not likely to break record temperatures. oakland, redwood city, santa rosa, livermore, everybody within four or five troegs of record territory tomorrow afternoon with similar conditions wince again on wednesday. let's take a look at the seven-day forecast, start inland, where the worst of the heat will be tomorrow and wednesday. you see from independence day on thursday through the holiday weekend we're still going to be around 100 degrees inland. so a mix of upper 90s and low 100s are likely. temperatures back down around the bay, but even the

coolest days in the seven-day forecast by sunday and monday several degrees above average. around # 0 degrees. along the coast, a couple days in the low 70s tomorrow and again on wednesday. but no gusty offshore winds to push that heat all the way down to the coast. the fog is really not going to be much of a factor at all until early next week, but what will be a factor will be the crowds. everybody from inland parts of the bay area trying to flee to the coast to escape the heat just be ready for it if you live along the coast. you're going to have a lot of visitors. vern? >> all right there, paul, straight ahead in sports, warriors lost a big part of its present yet gained a little bit of its future. and usa men's soccer tried to keep hope alive on a big stage.
