iberogast thanks to a unique combination of herbs, iberogast helps relieve six digestive symptoms to help you feel better. six digestive symptoms. the power of nature. iberogast. now at 11:00, when it comes to fireworks, calfire is warning don't end up like this. and get ready for a marathon heat wave baking the bay area in triple digit temperature. >> eat more ice cream and sit in my room with a/c going. >> go to the ocean. plus -- >> this is crazy. >> that's how a lot of dubs fans are feeling tonight. we look back at the career after a fan favorite. >> we're really going to miss you, klay. >> known for nailing three-pointers and getting his sea legs. >> i'm just going to jump in the ocean. >> and an impromptu party takes over a stretch of one bay area downtown. what these fans are
1:39 am
so excited about tonight. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hi, i'm sara donchey. >> i'm paul heggen. >> so paul, it is about to be scorching across the bay area. we are leading our show with this tonight, because it is a big deal. it's going to be hot and for of long time. >> yes, this is the longest stretch of prolonged hot weather that we've had so far this season. so just kind of brace yourself for it. >> we are trying. it was already hot today. we saw people head out to the beach and seek refuge on the water. some people hanging in the shade where they could find it at the park. paul, you always warn dog owners about paw burns when it gets this hot out. this week we will be the perfect time for people to protect their dog's paws and be smart about it. especially in the inland areas where it's going to get really hot. >> see this pup rocking those little booties that protect
1:40 am
their paws from burns. >> that can't feel good. tomorrow the heat wave, we know it's coming, i guess my question is is it actually going to be record break something. >> it's going to be close. right now we're not forecasting record-setting temperatures, but we're within four, five degrees or so. talk about the heat advisories and excessive heat warnings in effect for the bay area that go into effect tomorrow and continue all the way through saturday. so most inland parts of the bay area, in fact, all inland parts of the bay area are under that excessive heat warning which means a high risk of heat exhaustion, heat illness, even for folk who is aren't ordinarily sensitive to the heat. you can't get much relief during the overnight hours. it's a heat advisory right around the bay. that's where temperatures are going to be into the 80s and low 90s. tomorrow it's # 0 degrees even in san francisco, above 90 in oakland and close to 20 degrees above average inland. 108 in concord. and we are going to have offshore winds developing. a red flag warning in effect right now, went into effect at
1:41 am
the top of the hour. greatest concern is likely going to be in northeastern napa county, western solano county. we'll zoom in on that in a few minutes. if that wasn't enough, air quality is a concern. the same air mass trapping the heat at ground level also trapping urban pollution. so into that unhealthy for sensitive groups range for inland parts of the east bay and the santa clara valley tomorrow. likely again on wednesday, maybe even into thursday and friday too. >> yeah, so we're going to have to pay attention to that and a whole lot of other things. we're going to get into it all tonight. we sent our kelsi thorud over to san jose to show us how people there are getting ready for this marathon heat wave. >> reporter: well, the heat is on in the south bay with temperatures expected to exceed 100 degrees over the next few days. people across the city are getting creative when it comes to ways to cool down, but first responders are focussing on the potential fire danger that could come with the combination of this heat wave
1:42 am
and the fourth of july. what better way to beat the heat than a splash through the fountains in downtown san jose? >> it's always nice and cool in the water. got shade under the trees too. >> reporter: families flocked to the fountains monday as temperatures hit the 90s, and this is just the beginning. the heat is expected to top 100 degrees over the next few days. >> i have a pool at my apartment, so i'll probably swim there. yeah. >> or maybe go to the beach. >> yeah. >> reporter: that seems to be a common theme. many people we spoke with told us they're already making plans to head out of town towards some place a little cooler. >> go to the ocean. >> yeah. >> the beach. >> we might go to half moon bay or maybe santa cruz. we'll see. >> reporter: but while some people are escaping to cooler temperatures, first responders back here are preparing for what could be a dangerous combination, a heat ewave and the fourth of july. san jose police posted on social media
1:43 am
reminding people that all fireworks are illegal in the city and can be very dangerous in conditions like this. people we spoke with told us they understand that but still expect to see some people breaking the rules. >> i feel like there's always more fireworks every year, and just about the same amount of fires. but not much that i think is going to change, honestly. >> reporter: but of course, the hope is, especially in conditions like we are expecting this year that everyone will celebrate this holiday safely. >> cities across the bay area are opening up cooling centers. you can head to our website, kpix.com, to find one near you and monitor the weather where you live specifically. kelsi touched on this a bit. the combination of these triple digit temperatures and really dry grass in places all over the bay area. that has firefighters a little anxious in some places and to reduce wildfire risk, pg&e says it
1:44 am
could shut off power to 12,000 customers. most of the customers are in shasta county, though others are included in this possibility. pg&e says it's contacted anyone who could be impacted by safety shutoffs. with fourth of july almost here, firefighters are also on alert for people setting off illegal fireworks like those that was, i believe, in the mission district last year in san francisco. and last night firefighters in san francisco say a camera caught an illegal firework that sparked up a brush fire near mclaren park. that fire was able to burn about three acres before firefighters were able to put it out. and it's not just the risk of starting a fire. doctors are warning people about major injuries. >> these can and will blow off your fingers and your hands. we see these every year. unfortunately, these types of injuries are not reparable in most circumstances and that,
1:45 am
obviously, is life altering. >> and if that doesn't convince you that fireworks can do much damage, calfire says watch this. yeah, they posted this video with dramatic music of fake limbs being blown to pieces while holding fireworks to demonstrate the kind of damage some of these things can do. oakland police say they seized this haul of illegal fireworks, almost 100 pounds worth. they cited one person after getting tipped off about somebody selling fireworks out of their trunk this weekend. we saw people setting off fireworks in downtown san jose tonight when soccer fans took over the street. colombia takes on brazil tomorrow at levi stadium in copa america. colombia fans flooded the street in front of the hilton hotel. looks like they were trying to catch a glimpse of some of the colombia soccer players. we don't know if it was them for sure, but we did
1:46 am
spot a group of men that people were cheering at all wearing matching shirts. yeah, futbol fans are ededicated. we're not surprised about that. we did see people climbing trees and hopping on top of a sculpture, so got a little rowdy. the crowd did disperse about an hour ago. we saw a line of police moving in, blocking off the street, but things seemed to stay peaceful for the most part. dynasties do not last forever. you had the shaq and kobe eduo in l.a., the big three on the celtics in the '80s, and of course, who can forget the michael jordan era with the chicago bulls. now, for dubs fans, it was the splash brothers plus draymond. and now they are breaking up. warriors fans had a lot to sort through when they got the news today that klay thompson is leaving the team. >> i think it's a bummer. i think they should have tried a
1:47 am
little harder, but i'm -- i don't think they can pay him what he wants. >> we're really going to miss you, klay, especially your three-point shots. >> because it's klay, dre, and curry should be the foundation. >> now he's gone. >> yeah, this really is a big change for the warriors. vern glenn here to talk about that. it's really hard to imagine a team shaped around someone other than klay thompson and steph and dre. >> today it's awfully tough to embrace, unpack, whatever. it's a business. >> it's a business. it's not just saying good-bye to one person. it's saying gooz bye to the era. >> you are right about that. safe to say, it's a what have you done for me lately nba. are the best years behind one of the cornerstone es of the warriors dynasty? maybe. but his buddy at work unquestioned in his 13 years.
1:48 am
>> i think a very complete player. >> reporter: klay proved to be correct in getting taken with the 11th pick of the 2011 draft, and owner joe also had high expectations for the rookie from washington state. >> i think klay thompson is just an extraordinary -- our coaches are excited about him. >> reporter: thompson and steph curry beecame the first two pillars of the dubs feature championship core, creating a lethal combination behind the arc. >> klay thompson and steph curry, in my opinion they're the greatest shooting back court in the history of the game. >> reporter: and while steph may have been the headliner, there was no shortage of moments from klay. >> they got him again. >> again it's tyreek. >> has not missed a shot in the third. >> klay, have you ever experienced anything like that on any level? >> maybe elementary school. i had like 50 playing down with like -- i was in fourth grade, i was playing with some third graders too. >> reporter: thompson also came to the rescue in the postseason for golden state. the legend of
1:49 am
game six klay was born in 2016 when he hit 11 threes at oklahoma city to keep the dubs' season alive. >> pull, good. pull, good. >> reporter: klay, curry, draymond green, and kevin durant built the warriors into a dynasty, winning three enba titles in four years. >> oh, snap. klay just googled himself. it say three-time champion already. >> reporter: but thompson's career changed in 2019 when he tore his acl in the nba finals against toronto. after suffering the injury, he ran back on to the court to shoot free ethrows and tried to stay in the game. thompson tore his achilles in 2020, and the two major injuries #ke79 him out for the next two and a half years. >> he's back. >> i'm just so happy right now. i did not shoot as well as i wanted to, but i'm just so
1:50 am
happy i can even look at the stat sheet and see my name there. >> reporter: less than six months after making his comeback, thompson and the dubs won their fourth championship in boston in 2022. >> holy cannoli, this is crazy. >> reporter: clay also became a fan favorite for his antics off the court. >> i want to be klay. he's got it figured out. >> reporter: driving his boat in the bay, swimming in the ocean during the playoff series -- >> i'm just going to go jump in the ocean. i just know that will reset my mind and it worked. >> reporter: and capping postgame press conferences with paper airplanes. >> that's a good one. oh. >> reporter: it was a 13-year run that made thompson a legend in bay area sports. >> it's all gravy. it's been such a freaking special run. >> ticket demand for his return when the mavericks visit chase center will be through the roof. what number will he wear in dallas? well, number 11 isn't available, kyrie e-irving wears it. the warriors did announce that no one will
1:51 am
wear number 11 again. and people, sara, think -- they look at the contract go, three year, $50 million by his standards? but no state taxes in texas. so he keeps a lot of that money. >> yeah, he does. he does. but if he buys a home, property taxes are very high in some places, so he'll learn that. all right, vern, he will be missed in the bay area i'm sure. a flight takes a terrifying turn. why more than two dozen people were injured in the air and the hurricane barrelling through the caribbean shattering records tonight. and this private island could be yours if you have the cash for it. we ask paul and vern what their ideal private island would look like.

suddenly went into a nosedive. people who didn't have their seat belts on ended up hitting the ceiling. people had fractures and injuries to their arms, and legs. the flight had to make an emergency landing in brazil because of all this. these nasa images show the eye of hurricane beryl as seen from space. the storm is leaving a trail of destruction in the caribbean tonight, and it is breaking records. it became the earliest category 5 hurricane on record, shattering the old record by more than two weeks when hurricane emily hit on july 17th in 2005. all right, paul, check this out, the storm was churning up waves so strong it was breaking up boats on the island of saint vincent. obviously, this is really scary, especially for places that just are not really equipped for hurricane force winds and waves like this. >> yeah, and they're usually prepared for hurricane season. a you mentioned, this is awfully early in the season. the storm has just gotten stronger since then. we're actually going to start our weathercast by talking about
1:56 am
this category 5 hurricane, which has strengthened even further. now has 165-mile-an-hour sustained winds. zooming in for a closer look, the more symmetrical a hurricane is, the stronger the storm is. that's a general rule of thumb. this thing is incredibly well organized. it's compact, not a huge storm, but it's powerful and it's going to continue tracking to the west. its next target is going to be jamaica, a major category 3 hurricane as it approaches that island on wednesday morning. continuing to progress to the east and weakening before it hits the yucatan peninsula. but extreme ocean temperatures are fuelling this extreme storm. and it's extreme weather of a different sort impacting us. that is that heat dome that is going to be building in over the course of the next several days. the peak of the hit tomorrow and wednesday, but it's still cray sir hot through the fourth of july weekend. even bayside temperatures are up into the 90s in many locations tomorrow. notice these orange spots in
1:57 am
northern napa county and western solano county, parts of the mie comma range especially are seeing the gustiest offshore winds developing during the overnight hours and low humidity levels. and that's where the fire threat is maximized for the next couple of days. the entire bay area has that threat, especially with the fourth of july holiday looming right around the corner. temperatures still warm inland but backing down to the mid-70s in concord. 59 degrees the current pleasant temperature in san francisco. but inland temperatures are only going to drop down to the 60s for the most part by early tomorrow morning. low to mid-60s in the santa clara valley down to just beelow 60 degrees in morgan hill. that's the exception. temperatures far inland in the east bay staying in the low 70s in antioch. it's part of the problem. when the heat builds in like this, our overnight low temperatures don't drop low at all except near the water. 50s along the bay and near the coast. but as the heat really intensifies tomorrow, wednesday morning's low temperatures are likely going to be even warmer than
1:58 am
tomorrow morning. this is part of the danger, we don't have any real time for the heat to escape off into space overnight. it's a cumulative effect, wears you down, especially when temperatures are getting up close to 110 degrees from fairfield to antioch, brentwood. 107 for livermore and 100 in san jose. 80 in san francisco. above 90 degrees in oakland. want relief? well, the familiar spots staying in the low 70s along the coast. ten degrees above average. mentioned earlier we're not likely to break record temperatures. oakland, redwood city, santa rosa, livermore, everybody within four or five troegs of record territory tomorrow afternoon with similar conditions wince again on wednesday. let's take a look at the seven-day forecast, start inland, where the worst of the heat will be tomorrow and wednesday. you see from independence day on thursday through the holiday weekend we're still going to be around 100 degrees inland. so a mix of upper 90s and low 100s are likely. temperatures back down around the bay, but even the
1:59 am
coolest days in the seven-day forecast by sunday and monday several degrees above average. around # 0 degrees. along the coast, a couple days in the low 70s tomorrow and again on wednesday. but no gusty offshore winds to push that heat all the way down to the coast. the fog is really not going to be much of a factor at all until early next week, but what will be a factor will be the crowds. everybody from inland parts of the bay area trying to flee to the coast to escape the heat just be ready for it if you live along the coast. you're going to have a lot of visitors. vern? >> all right there, paul, straight ahead in sports, warriors lost a big part of its present yet gained a little bit of its future. and usa men's soccer tried to keep hope alive on a big stage.

(♪♪) interesting moves happening in the nba, obviously, the klay story is a big one, the biggest one and it hits very close to home. >> isn't it fun to sit around and talk about a guy making hundreds of millions of dollars that we'll never see and we don't get -- and we don't
2:03 am
write the checks. >> no. >> we don't sign them at all. >> we don't see them either. >> no, not at all. all right, klay thompson, we've been talking about him all day and all night. with him headed to dallas, here's the question, where does golden state go from here? they've got two second round picks from the thompson deal. well, they made their first addition of the off-season, reportedly agreeing to a one-year deal with de'anthony melton. not exactly the splash dub nation was hoping for, but he's a veteran guard who averaged over ten points per game the last three seasons. all right, now hockey. three days after drafting macklin celebrini with their number one pick, the sharks added tyler on the opening day of nhl free agency. they agreed to a four-year deal. sharks fans will remember tyler. he played nine seasons with the kings and won a stanley cup in 2014. oh, soccer from kansas city. the united states needing a win over uruguay to stay

alive in the copa america tournament. free kick, uruguay, scoreless game. goalie matt turner didn't save it once, couldn't save it twice. matias oliver ya score a scores the lone goal. rough early exit from copa america. and sara, i understand this is supposed to be the most talent the u.s. men has had for a long time. so you just wonder if there's fallout from this, some consequences out of this. >> yeah, that's a tough one. >> u.s. trying to make a mark on the men's side. >> yeah. u.s. women's looked promising for the olympics. i know, i know, that's a tough one. vern, thank you so much. the bay area's only private island sup for grabs, and we asked vern what he'd like to see on his dream private island. he really ran with it. stick around. >> i did.

the bay area's only private island is up for sale for $25 million. so what will all of that get you? max darrow gives us a look. >> reporter: a tour of chris limb's real estate listing requires a trip on the water. the former president of christie's international, he's had his fair share of unique listings, a fire house a church, a parking spot even, but a $25 million private island, well -- >> my very first. >> reporter: limb has the listing for the only private island in the san francisco bay, red rock island. it's the giant rock that sits a stone's throw away from the richmond san rafael bridge. a place most people in the bay area know of
2:09 am
but know little to nothing about. just ask captain armando flores of north bay charters and marine services who makes his living taking people out on the water. >> almost every weekend. it's a good spot. a lot of fish in the area here. good striper fishing. sightseeing. i bring people, you know, to take pictures for weddings. people always ask, who's the owner of this place? >> reporter: aside from the birds, limb says the 5.8-acre island does actually belong to a family and has served as somewhat of a family heirloom for decades. >> the island was acquired by my clients many, many years ago through a bet. and so it was a gem dealer who had moved to bangkok and a real estate attorney who had this bet that whoever lived the longest would actually acquire the island. >> reporter: nobody actually lives on red rock island, and legend has it nobody has since

the 1850s, long before the san francisco skyline sprouted up. a big selling point, says limb. >> it really is an iconic view. >> reporter: over the last 50 years, ideas to develop the island have never come to fruition. at one point in the '80s, there was even talk of building a casino ethere. >> there in the past have been unsolicited offers for purchasing the island, but this is the very first time that it's being offered to the general public. >> reporter: and he says interest is there. >> it's like selling a really rare painting. >> reporter: he's had agents from miami and new york fly in to see the special sand and stone for themselves. >> and we've actually had two offers and we're working with an active offer right now for the island. >> and i take it this probably moves a little slower than a typical transaction? >> it's not a typical transaction, but i will tell you, all the buyers who have been interested are all cash. >> reporter: now the feasibility of actually building something on red rock island does remain somewhat of a question, not to mention the
2:11 am
red tape that would likely be involved with the process. >> you know, it is a little more complex because we're three counties, san francisco, marin, and contra costa. >> reporter: limb thinks there is a good chance that whoever buys the island will likely decide to preserve this prized piece of the bay. >> and that's really who i'd like to find to be the buyer and the next steward of this incredible private island, red rock island. >> reporter: and he's glad to be a part of the changing tides of the island's history. >> well, i know who it won't be. >> not any of us. no. >> no, because we are neither rich nor sophisticated. okay. >> speak for yourself. >> you're right, it's just me. okay. we know you guys would have big plans if you had the chance to do this and own your own private island. >> i do. >> vern got very specific. >> can you walk us through what you're asking for here. >> all right, one story, 145 square feet, an intimate four
