across popular island nations. first, biden's public blitz. the president going into overdrive to push back against growing pressure to step aside in his bid for a second term. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president biden is not bowing down to pressure following his struggle in last week's debate. instead the 81-year-old is trying to turn the tide with a full slate of public events and meetings. one sitting congressman, however, has already called on the president to bow out, while mr. biden offered an explanation for his debate performance. cbs' jarred hill is joining us now to explain. good morning. >> reporter: so that debate performance the president is now blaming all on the foreign travel he did in the weeks before. it's the latest example of the biden campaign's ramped up damage control as the conversation turns into concern over whether he can win in november. in a cbs news exclusive, vice

president kamala harris forcefully pushed back on calls for president joe biden to drop out of the 2024 race. >> look, joe biden is our nominee. we beat trump once, and we're going to beat him again, period. >> reporter: it comes as questions mount from within the party about his fitness to serve another term following a rocky first debate. yesterday at a fundraiser the president offered a new explanation, blaming his poor performance on nearly back-to-back trips to europe and california in the weeks before, and telling attendees "i didn't listen to my staff and then i almost fell asleep on stage." >> we understand that it was a bad night. he knows how to do the job. >> reporter: tuesday white house press secretary karine jean-pierre said it was a cold and that he's not suffering from something more serious. tuesday 77-year-old texas congressman lloyd doggett became the first sitting democratic member to publicly call on biden to bow out. >> we must have the strongest possible candidate, and i don't believe that's joe biden. >> reporter: other democrats are also voicing concerns. >> i was horrified by the debate.

>> he needs to make sure that the american people have confidence in his ability to run for re-election. >> reporter: now president biden is trying to shore up more support. later today he's set to meet with a group of democratic governors, and he has campaign rallies, a tv interview, and solo news conference scheduled in the coming days. so yesterday illinois governor j.d. pritzker, also a biden campaign surrogate, said there was another conversation with democratic governors yesterday where he said there was a, quote, healthy discussion about some concerns regarding biden's fitness to serve. also, that they want to hear from the president directly. as of today, gavin newsom is going to be in d.c. in person for those discussions. he's been one of the names floated as a possible alternative to president biden, although top members of the party have said if anyone it should be vice president. >> yep. jarred hill in new york. thank you very much. now to a legal victory for

donald trump. as a new york judge postponed his week's sentencing for his so-called hush-money convictions. it has now been pushed back until at least mid-september. and this comes after the supreme court's ruling on presidential immunity. the judge agreeing to weigh the possible impact of that decision on this case. as trump's lawyers call for the conviction to be tossed out. and now to hurricane beryl which is barreling toward jamaica after killing at least six people in the southeast caribbean. just look at the size of this monster storm. it's a cat four. this is taken from the international space station. beryl is expected to bring life-threatening winds and storm surge to jamaica when it passes over the island this morning. cbs' tom hanson in jamaica where residents and tourists are bracing for whatever beryl brings. >> reporter: it is sheer destruction across the windward islands, in grenada hurricane beryl slammed into the country monday packing heavy rain and

150-mile-per-hour winds. 95% of the small island of carriacou now unrecognizable. >> the situation is grim. there is no power. there's almost complete destruction of homes and buildings on the island. >> reporter: beryl made landfall as a category-four storm, leaving a trail of destruction in st. vincent and the grenadines, ripping homes to shreds. >> hurricane beryl has left in its wake immense destruction. >> reporter: beryl intensified into a monster category-five hurricane. there's never been a storm this strong, this early in the season. unusually warm ocean water in the mid to upper 80s is fueling this massive storm. now taking aim to close to three million people in jamaica and the cayman islands. residents on grand cayman waited in lines as long as three hours stocking up on groceries. and a similar scene in montego bay, jamaica, where people are

snapping up water and other essentials, preparing for beryl's wrath which could bring catastrophic winds and up to a foot of rain. it was a mad dash at montego bay airport as visitors say they're cutting their trip short. >> thinking about the safety and our safety and the safety of my wife. i'm not the best swimmer, so i need to get out as fast as i can. >> reporter: cbs news has learned airlines are trying to get people out. among the carriers making accommodations, american airlines added at least three extra flights. united is giving out flight waivers for travelers impacted, and delta has capped fares for folks trying to leave the storm's path. tom hanson, cbs news, montego bay, jamaica. now to the israel-hamas war. as israel moves the civilian population from gaza's second largest city for what will likely be a new battle, we are learning new details about the fighting in rafah. the idf chief of the general staff visited the area and says more than 900 militants have been killed including commanders, and now forces are

working to destroy the terrorist infrastructure. this comes as fears of a wider war grow on israel's northern border with lebanon. u.s. secretary of state antony blinken says israel has effectively lost sovereignty in its north because the hezbollah attacks have driven much of the population away. the group's deputy leader says that they will not stop the fight until a full cease-fire in gaza. weeks after being rescued, former hostage noa argamani laid her mother to rest. her mom had been battling terminal brain cancer and had pleaded for her daughter's release back in november in hopes of seeing her before she died. former new york city mayor and legal adviser to donald trump rudy giuliani is no longer allowed to practice law in new york. a manhattan appeals court barred giuliani yesterday after ruling he repeatedly made false statements about trump's 2020 election loss.

"the herald-tribune" reports new dengue cases have several florida counties under a mosquito advisory or alert. as of june 29th, there have been ten cases of locally acquired dengue in four florida counties. the number of travel-related cases of the mosquito-borne illness reported in the state so far this year is much higher with more than 240 cases. experts say severe dengue can result in shock, internal bleeding, even death. residents are being urged to drain any standing water on their properties to reduce the risk of mosquito swarms. "the star tribune" says a bridge next to a major dam is at risk of failure a week after a major flooding. officials gathered at the rapidan dam in minnesota jed to assess a still-closed bridge next to the dam. there is a concern the bridge may completely crumble after the dam suffered its worst flooding in nearly 60 years. the area was hit with at least ten inches of rain in a week. and "the cincinnati enquirer" reports jewish

will hit $3.49 a gallon nationwide. that could mean big savings for drivers with more than 60 million motorists expected to travel by car according to aaa. spirit airlines is slashing some junk fees. the florida-based carrier known for its cheap fares and al a carte flight upgrade stopped charging customers for cancel and changing flights and increased the weight for checked bags from 40 pounds to 50 pounds. the airline's chief commercial officer says the move is aimed at retaining current customers and attracting new ones. and americans are expected to spend less this fourth of july. while 87% of consumers say they plan to celebrate this year, those celebrate regular expected to spend an average of just over $90 per person on food items which, by the way, is $3 down from this time last year. that's your cbs "moneywatch" report for this wednesday

the rock band heart is postponing the remaining shows of their north american tour after lead singer ann wilson announced she has cancer. wilson said she underwent a surgery to remove the cancerous growth and is undergoing preventive chemotherapy. she went on to say, quotes, this is merely a pause. i have much more to sing. wilson did not disclose the type of cancer. the fda has approved another drug that can modestly slow the progression of alzheimer's. the agency approved kisunlu produced by eli lilly. it's for patients with early cases of alzheimer's. the drug is only the second that's been convincingly shown to delay cognitive decline in patients. eli lilly says a year's worth of therapy would cost around $32,000. in other health news, the fda will no longer allow the use of an additive found in some sodas. it's called bvo, and it's used in small amounts to keep citrus flavoring from floating to the top of beverages.

bvo has been linked to health ailments including nervous system damage and loss of muscle coordination and memory. the ban takes effect in august. and anti-depressants have gotten a bad rap for causinga weight gain, but a new study finds some are more likely it ard on the pounds than others. patients using lexapro, paxil, and cymbalta were 10% to 15% more likely to gain at least 5% of their baseline weight than zoloft users. those taking wellbutrin were 15% less likely to gain weight than zoloft users. and patients on prozac were not associated with a weight change at all. coming up on "cbs mornings," tony dokoupil relives his baseball glory days as he visits citi field. . . one, i had to switch carriers...
