news with sara donchey. on cbs news bay area. hi, i'm sara donchey, we are heading straight into the july 4th holiday. now, for a lot of us, it is an inconvenience, uncomfortable, for some, a serious problem. we will talk about that in just a moment. the combination of all of the heat and the wildfire smoke coming in from up north made it hazy out there. air quality not great. a lot of people will light fireworks for the fourth of july. paul has been tracking the all important holiday forecast and keeping us posted on the potential risks >> sara, the heat will continue into the holiday weekend. it was hot out there already today as we finished the abbreviated workweek. 105 in santa rosa, 1 degree off of the high record, over 100 degrees in san jose.

the heat will continue, once again, tomorrow. let's take a look at the day forecast for the fourth of july forecast. parts of the area will have different temperatures, along the coast, warming up in the 60s, some spots, near 70 degrees, around the bay, temperatures reaching into the 80s the real heat will be inland. temperatures will top out above 105 degrees wong again. apart from the heat, the fireworks forecast. can you see them in san francisco? notice the icons, clouds showing up closer to the coast. it looks like a shallow layer of fog is making its way through the golden gate heading through tomorrow evening. as is typical for the fourth of july fireworks forecast in san francisco you may see clouds instead of fireworks over head. the heat will be a story throughout the holiday weekend. the heat advisory around the bay it has been expanded through the week. the peak of the heat will be in the next

couple of days, the fire threat the next couple of days as well. red flag for the north bay and the east bay hills has been pushed all of the way until 9:00 p.m. on saturday. other areas in red, the coastal ranges of sonoma county, the red flag warning will be allowed to expire earlier. we will get into the details and fill in the map with how hot it will be for tomorrow for the fourth of july coming up in a few minutes >> so hot outside. some areas are canceling their fireworks shows. city leaders in st. helena canceled their fireworks shows saying it is just too risky given the fire danger this year. the city is canceling the independence day parade, too. they are inviting people to go to the community center where it is cooler. antioch is canceling its parade that is where we sent our andrea nakano and she found out the heat is changing other plans as well. >> reporter: the marina in

was canceled due to heat. antioch still plans to hold a community event at night in the parking lot of city hall. during the day, she says there are only two places to go. >> stay in the house or come here and get cool. [ laughter ] >> reporter: pg&e said the power outage by the water park is due to an equipment issue that started last night. supposed to be back on at 8:00 tonight. that has now been pushed back to 4:00 in the morning. in sonoma county a 27-year-old man is missing and may have drowned in the russian river. firefighters were called out to via grand beach at 6:00 this evening. the fire chief is warning other swimmers about the dangers even if the water seems safe. >> the main thing, don't get in the water over your head if you can not swim. even if you get in shallow water, wear a floatation device. especially if you can not swim >> the search for the missing man has been suspended overnight. a dive team will be sent out in the morning. >> a lot of people have their

windows open during a heatwave like this especially in san francisco where so many people do not have air-conditioning. today, a toddler was rushed to the hospital after falling out of an open window. the fire department told us they rushed to a building on mission street on 19th when they got there the 15-month-old child was in its mother's arms and was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. no update yet on how the child is doing tonight. a homeless person died because of the heat. it was an avoidable tragedy but did not elaborate on the person or how or where they died. he wrote the city is working to create enough shelter for everyone. san jose will keep the cooling centers open through july 9th. the portable ac units were cleared out on story road in home depot and we spotted a dog with its own fan and a wet washcloth. a stroller like that

is a great idea to avoid paw barns and we saw people with the towel trick. >> stay in the shade or throw a wet towel over my neck to stay cool. probably go swim figure i can at my brother's place. >> right now, with the power grid strained, 3,000 pg&e customers are in the dark. the bulk have been in the south bay. they spent most of the day trying to restore power in the east bay from last night's outages, we met a man who called his grandson over to bring a generator in hopes of saving his fourth of july food supply. >> i am not worried about the tv or coming, air-condition what but i worry about my food in the freezer. >> his freezer and fridge were stuffed with food for the holiday. he seemed the most concerned about keeping his supply of beer cool for the fourth. luckily the generator did the trick. tonight, bay area strike teams are up in oroville trying to get a handle on the wildfire sending smoke all of the way here to the bay area. the

thompson fire burned 3500 acres. we have seen video tonight of flames spreading to homes and cars but as ashley sharp reports, firefighters say they are starting to get a handle on things and an aggressive firefight is paying off. >> reporter: a much less active thompson fire on wednesday with hardly and smoke in the sky to show for it. near the oroville dam spill way, what is left is evidence of where it ripped through. smoldering stumps and burnt power lines. but, tuesday night our cameras captured homes burning along canyon drive. >> the houses are going to go up any minute, i tried >> this camera captured the moment he went into the fire to try to save trapped livestock. >> you are always on edge. did my house make it? did it burn? he is a camp fire survivor himself. wednesday came to the

. l starting tonight, you can see a beam of colorful light coming from the roof of san francisco's ferry building. you saw it in the live shot for

just a minute. it is part of illuminate summer awe. using lasers to create public art. you can see the ferry building lights tonight through july 7th and then from july 11th through the 14th the lights will move to the fair month fairmont hotel. the official fireworks show over the san francisco bay is still a go. that one starts at 9:30 tomorrow night. tune into pix plus, channel 44 to watch the show. there are parades planned across the bay. prototype flying car is expected to be a part of the festivities. the parade starts at 10:00 a.m. the company pivifal says they will fly -- pivotal says they will be flying their car over the bay. check this out, this show in the sky over the vegas strip is a preview of what we will

mentioned in santa rosa. you might take a slight step back in the 90s tomorrow, 94 in oakland. breaking the record, 78 degrees in san francisco. the temperatures inland in the east bay, 107. 95 in redwood city. along the coast in half moon bay. up to 101 degrees in san jose. those temperatures are way, way above average for this time of the year. 20 degrees above normal. about 15-18 degrees above normal. again, the tiny step back but it is still leaving us with crazy hot weather as we head into the holiday weekend. right now, let's take a look. there is the beam of light. covering it up with current temperatures that are backing down a little faster than they did 24 hours ago. still warm inland. upper 70s in concord, lower 80s. it is cooling off santa rosa, upper 60s. lower to middle 60s

in san francisco and oakland. heading through the rest of tonight, mostly 60s on the map by tomorrow morning, we are supposed to drop to the 50s. with shorter nighttime hours in early summer there is only so much time for the heat that we built up today to radiate off back into space. some of the north bay valleys dipping down into the 50s, heating up again tomorrow, near 70 degrees along the coast. 90s along the peninsula. lower 90s to 100s. did not make it to 110. 107 is still plenty hot enough to be dangerous if you are not careful. 80 degrees in san francisco. middle 80 s in oakland. lower to middle 90s. a lot of 90s in the north bay. the breeze will not crack the heatwave. it is going to sand it off of the edges a little bit. the temperatures inland, still well over 100 degrees. are we going to set records? we will be close. in a few

locations, tomorrow's forecast highs, record territory, it looks like we will be in 4-5 degrees of it in oakland. not likely we will set records tomorrow. more likely on friday. just because the records are a little lower. 84 degrees, high temperature in oakland, tying the record, one of the lowest records in the month of july. 6 degrees in redwood city and san jose. within 6 degrees of santa rosa and 5 degrees of livermore. let's take a look at the seven-day forecast. our temperatures are going to be, well, just hot. coolest days inland in the forecast. in the middle 90s on a widespread basis on tuesday and wednesday. the heat backs down it does not go away. it is still going to be hot once we back away from crazy hot conditions. the temperatures around the bay are going to get back closer to normal once the onshore breeze has a chance to do its thing. lower to middle 70s that will have to wait. along the coast,
