and happy birthday, america. people from coast to coast will be celebrating the nation's independence with fireworks, food, and fun. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this july 4th, president biden is rejecting calls for him to bow out of the 2024 presidential campaign and is making a public push to shore up support among his fellow democrats. yesterday he met with democratic governors at the white house as a second house democrat is pushing for biden's withdrawal. cbs' leah mishkin joins us now from london as the president also gears up to host world leaders next week. good morning. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. yes, the nato summit, leaders from the alliance's 32 countries, will be in washington to discuss the ongoing war in ukraine. the president is scheduled to have a solo news conference which many will be watching closely. >> the governors have his back. >> reporter: multiple democratic

state governors closed ranks around president joe biden after meeting with him at the white house wednesday. >> president joe biden is in it to win it, and all of us said we pledged our support to him. >> reporter: it comes as the president works to reassure his fellow democrats of fitness for office after last week's poor debate performance which he addressed in a radio interview yesterday. >> i had a bad night. i screwed up. i made a mistake. that's 90 minutes on stage. look at what i've done in 3.5 years. >> reporter: the same day the president also told his campaign staff, quote, let me say this as clearly as i possibly can and as simply and straightforward as i can -- i am running, no one's pushing me out. i'm not leaving. but already at least two sitting house democrats from texas and arizona have called on biden to step down. a senior house democrat tells cbs news that number could grow in the coming days as a new cbs news poll shows former president donald trump with a slight edge nationwide among battleground state voters. >> i would prefer to have another choice.

>> i believe that if there's anybody right now that can beat trump it's biden. >> reporter: tomorrow president biden will rally in wisconsin and sit down for a television interview. next week another big test with the president hosting the nato summit in washington. and vice president kamala harris has been floated by some democrats as a possible replacement for president biden at the top of the ticket. on tuesday cbs news asked harris if she was ready to lead, and she replied that she is proud to be biden's running mate. anne-marie? >> leah mishkin in london. thank you so much. now to our other top story -- hurricane beryl. folks in jamaica are waking up to assess the damage after the storm roared through. the hurricane has been downgraded to a category three with winds of 125 miles per hour. it's going to pass by the cayman islands on track toward mexico, and its impact may even reach parts of texas. bt we are getting a first look

at some of the destruction that it caused on the island of carriacou in grenada. at least seven deaths have been blamed on the storm. cbs is in montego bay, jamaica. the prime minister declared the entire island a disaster area. >> reporter: hurricane beryl swiped the southern coast of jamaica with such ferocity it ripped away roofs and uprooted trees. downgraded from a category four, beryl packed a punch bringing strong winds, heavy rains, and storm surge causing flooding and destruction across the western caribbean island. this is what conditions in a category four feel like. we are being pelted with rain. you can see palm trees are being bent over. we've already seen a couple fall down. we're hunkering down because it is just too unsafe to be on the ground in this ferocious storm. the winds were so fierce a portion of this roof was blown off at the international airport in kingston, leaving a large,

gaping hole. the capital of kingston sits on the coast, and the mayor was begging people to leave on buses ready to head inland. >> if it hit us directly, we are about preserving people's life. >> reporter: despite warnings to evacuate, some residents still hunkered down in their homes prepared for the storm. >> i have no control over what is coming, so i just have to pray that all -- all people of jamaica is safe. >> reporter: tom hanson, cbs news, montego bay, jamaica. back here, a wildfire has forced more than 28,000 people from their homes in northern california as an exceptionally brutal heat wave ramps up. governor newsom declared a state of emergency as the thompson fire burns out of control about 70 miles north of sacramento. so far it's charred more than 3,500 acres and is only 7% contained. officials say multiple

structures have been destroyed. there's a fireworks ban in the city of oroville, and the annual fourth of july fireworks show was canceled. new york city is gearing up for the largest july 4th celebration in the nation with some added security. mayor eric adams says there are no credible threats, but the city will remain vigilant with thousands of nypd officers deployed. the 48th annual macy's fourth of july fireworks display will take place on the hudson river for the first time in more than a decade. millions of americans use fireworks at home during the fourth of july, but safety advocates are expecting thousands of injuries this year. cbs' nancy chen has some important tips to keep your outdoor celebrations safe. >> reporter: these demonstrations with mannequins are re-creations of real-life accidents involving fireworks. a new report shows there were 9,700 fireworks-related injuries last year and eight deaths. those numbers are down from the

pandemic years when more americans used fireworks at home instead of heading to crowded professional displays. >> last couple years we've seen the numbers go down which is great. but again, there's still way too many injuries and deaths. >> reporter: alex hoehn saric is chair of the consumer product safety commission and says use of illegal fireworks is a major problem. last year in ottawa county, michigan, a blast from a homemade device shattered nearby cold war windows and killed one woman who was hit by shrapnel. evn legal fireworks you find in stores can be dangerous if not used properly. of the 9,700 e.r. visits last year, 42% of patients were treated for burns. many of those burns were caused by sparklers which are often given to kids. >> they burn at about 2,000 degrees which is the same temperature as some blowtorches. if you wouldn't give a kid a blowtorch, which you shouldn't do, you really shouldn't give them a sparkler either. >> reporter: safety advocates say if you do plan to use fireworks at home, remember the

(♪♪) a runaway bull caused chaos on the streets of peru near lima. the animal was seen charging cars and pedestrians, at one point video shows the bull toppling a bicyclist who fortunately walked away. no injuries were reported, and the bull was eventually cornered and caught by police. new developments in the israel-hamas war where there's renewed activity in the push for

a cease-fire and hostage release deal. after talks fell apart last month. hamas says that it delivered its latest response to mediators adding it had exchanged some ideas to stop the fighting but did not go into specifics. israel says it is reviewing the offer. hamas has long argued any deal must bring an end to the war and a full israeli withdrawal from gaza. israel has said it would only accept temporary pauses in the fighting until hamas is eradicated. a new lawsuit against rapper sean combs, and a shopper dies at a mall. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "los angeles times" reports a tourist was killed during a botched robbery at a mall. mays say a couple from new zealand was approached by two men who attempted to rob them on tuesday. they say patricia mckay was dragged into a parking lot and subsequently run over by a car driven by a third suspect. the suspects took off in the car. there was a police pursuit, and one suspect was led out of the

vehicle. the two others tried to flee on foot, eventually all three were arrested. "the denver post" says a colorado dairy worker is the fifth person in the u.s. infected with bird flu. public health officials say an adult man tested positive for the illness after reporting mild symptoms including pink eye. they say the man is an employee at a dairy farm who had exposure to infected cattle and later recovered from -- after receiving antiviral treatment. the cdc says the risk to the general public from bird flu remains low. and the "new york post" reports sean "diddy" combs is accused of forcing an ex-porn star to have sex with guests at a party in the hamptons. adria english said she worked as a go-go dancer at his annual white party two decades ago.

were treated by medical personnel. it was not clear how many people ate the spoiled food. >> there was these like two black spots that almost looked like burnt cheese. and i thought it was just something different. and -- and i guess that turned out to be the black mold. >> delta says that out of an abundance of caution a number of international flights yesterday adjusted their meal options. celebrating the 4th with freebies, and general motors penalized for some high-polluting cars. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks closed mixed wednesday ahead of the fourth of july holiday. the dow lost 23 points. the nasdaq gained 159, and the s&p 500 gained 28 points. general motors has been fined nearly $146 million for excess emissions. the environmental protection agency alleges nearly six million gm vehicles release more pollution than the automaker

reported. gm denies any wrongdoing, though a spokesperson for the national highway traffic safety administration says the company agreed to pay the fine. the "wall street journal" reports the owner of department store saks fifth avenue plans to buy rival neiman marcus. after months of negotiations, the two companies' boards have agreed to the $2.65 billion deal. amazon and salesforce would also reportedly take a minority stake in the new company which will be called saks global. and there are plenty of deals to be had to celebrate america's independence. krispy kreme is offering a free original glazed doughnut to those wearing red, white, and blue to participating shops. jimmy john's has a special buy one-get one deal on its new spicy firecracker wrap. kfc is giving 40% off 12 pieces of chicken. and doordash has free delivery deals on white claw seltzers and a promotion where you can also win a cooler.

and festive summer months. michael george with tips. >> reporter: it's a sound we love to hear -- that sizzle on the grill. but no one wants a holiday cookout to end with someone getting sick. the cdc estimates there are about 48 million cases of foodborne illnesses in the u.s. every year with 128,000 hospitalizations and 3,000 deaths. >> during the summer months, rates of foodborne illness increases. >> reporter: usda food safety specialist kenneth king says there are ways to prevent that from happening. starting with properly cooking meat and poultry. >> the only way to know your meat and poultry is fully cooked is by using a food thermometer to measure its internal temperature. >> reporter: experts also say to thaw meat or poultry first, marinate in the refrigerator, keep raw meat and poultry separate from other foods, and keep the smoker and grill at a safe temperature. >> for grills you can do 300 degrees, as well.
