heat alerts and adding fuel to the flames burning across california. shark attacks. four beachgoers hurt while trying to bet the heat in the waters off texas. >> but first -- >> i'm not going anywhere. all right. >> shoring up support. president biden fighting for his political future as he faces a growing sense that he may have just days to persuade democrats he's fit for office. good morning, i'm carissa lawson in for anne-marie green. today president biden heads to battleground wisconsin pushing to win over his own party as more democrats panic about the president's 2024 prospects. last night the president hosted a fourth of july party at the white house and told the crowd he is staying in the race. this as new video surfaces of his opponent, former president donald trump, on the golf course crudely blasting both the president and vice

president. >> all broken down -- too bad. he's quitting the race. i got him -- >> cbs' leah mishkin joins us from london with the latest. >> reporter: good morning. look, the debate performance really set president biden back. it raised concerns about his age and mental acuity and whether he is fit to run another term. that's why all these public appearances and interviews coming up including the nato summit next week in washington are opportunities for the president to change the public narrative. today marks a pivotal 24 hours for president joe biden as he returns to the campaign trail in battleground wisconsin and sits down for his first television interview since last week's poor debate performance. [ cheers ] the president and his running mate, vice president kamala harris, showed a united front on july 4th at the white house. earlier the commander in chief said this at a barbecue for american service members -- >> you got me, man. i'm not going anywhere.

all right. >> reporter: the calls for president biden to bow out of the race are growing from party mega donors like netflix co-founder reed hastings and house lawmakers. >> now is the time for him to follow in one of our founding father's, george washington's footsteps, and step aside to let new leaders rise up and run against donald trump. >> reporter: california's gavin newsom is one of several democratic governors to voice support for biden after meeting with him wednesday night. >> i believe in this man. i believe in his character. i believe that he has been one of the most transformative presidents in our collective lifetimes. >> reporter: according to meeting attendees, the president told the governors he plans to curtail events after 8:00 p.m. and get more sleep. president biden plans to continue his public blitz this weekend at a campaign event in pennsylvania. and the white house has blamed the president's debate performance on a cold. the president himself said he was tired after two foreign trips. can he turn things around? these next few appearances will

be closely watched. >> leah mishkin in london. thank you. breaking overnight, britain's labor party is celebrating a landslide election victory clearing the way for a new prime minister. laborers sweat the conservative party out of power after 14 years. the worst defeat for the conservatives in the nearly 200-year history of the party. kier starmer will be the incoming prime minister replacing rishi sunak. >> you campaigned for it, you've fought for it, you voted for it. and now has arrived -- change begins now. >> the british people have delivered a sobering verdict tonight. there is much to learn and reflect on. and i take responsibility for the loss. >> the conservative party was damaged by boris johnson's covid party scandal and voters' frustration over the high cost of living. the victory by the center left party is in contrast to the rise

of the far right in europe. around 134 million americans are facing excessive heat alerts as a record-breaking heat wave broils much of the country. in california the warnings are particularly stark. the national weather service calls the heat wave dangerous and potentially lethal. all this while firefighters are working in those triple-digit conditions to battle flames. cbs' elise preston is in orville, 70 miles north of sacramento. >> reporter: much of the west coast is facing two threats -- dangerous fire conditions and brutal heat. >> anywhere from the 115 to 120 degrees, so that's incredibly hot. >> reporter: the national weather service calls this an exceptionally dangerous, potentially historic, and deadly heat event. the massive wildfire burning near the town of oroville, california, has consumed at least four structures. but there's another toll --

eight firefighters here have suffered heat-related injuries. standing outside in this heat, how does it feel to you? >> if you were to put on all your winter gear to go skiing in 110 degrees and too yard work at your house, that's what it's like. they're doing hard, arduous activity in multiple layers of clothing. >> reporter: most of california is trapped in an unrelenting heat dome and even water provides little relief. in phoenix a 10-year-old boy died in triple-digit heat while hiking. more than 1,200 americans die every year from heat-related illnesses. the city of portland, oregon, has declared a state of emergency where many are without air conditioning. >> yeah, i think any time it gets in the triple digits it's alarming. >> reporter: holiday heat stretching coast to coast, pushing 100 degrees in the nation's capital this fourth of july. >> it's hot. make sure you have plenty of water. if you can, find some shade. >> reporter: now this gives you

a glimpse of just how dry the grass is here in oroville. this brush is only fuel on a hot, windy day which is why warnings about fireworks are posted throughout the area. official fireworks shows are canceled. elise preston, cbs news, oroville, california. hurricane beryl is picking up steam once again as it takes aim at mexico's popular resort destinations. beryl strengthened back into a category three as it moved into open water. the storm is expected to bring heavy rain and winds to mexico's caribbean coast before crossing the yucatan peninsula and making another landfall near the mexico-texas border. the storm has left at least nine people dead, and some caribbean islands in complete ruins. cbs' tom hanson has the latest from jamaica. >> reporter: hurricane beryl on the move toward mexico after swiping the cayman islands. the category-three hurricane had

winds whipping up to 115 miles per hour. jamaica dodged a direct hit on wednesday. the center of the storm passing less than 50 miles south of the capital of kingston. cleanup is now under way with the worst destruction in southern jamaica. devastated moments, torn roofs, and downed trees. the deadly hurricane now barreling toward the yucatan peninsula, a popular vacation spot on mexico's east coast. cbs' dave malkoff is there. >> reporter: beryl is heading toward the resort areas here, and while they are experts on providing food, water, and shelter to thousands, they can't necessarily do that in these glass-lined ocean-facing rooms here during an oncoming hurricane. they just handed us this note that says in parts "you will be relocated to our shelter and become our refugee." emergency response teams in

south texas are distributing sandbags to residents. >> need some protection just in case. >> reporter: at the south padera island alligator sanctuary, 35 were rangle out of the water and taken inland. at the montego bay airport -- >> i want to go home. >> reporter: crowds are already lining up to get out. >> we've had a good start to -- interesting time. but we want to go home now as quick as we can. >> reporter: just moments ago, look at this -- they started letting people into the montego bay international airport but they shouldn't get too optimistic. airport officials tell us they have not confirmed a single commercial flight going out. tom hanson, cbs news, montego bay, jamaica. as people in south padre island, texas, brace for beryl, at least four swimmers were attacked by a shark yesterday.

one person suffered minor injuries. three others had to be transported to the hospital including a woman who was bit own her left leg. asian good samaritans wrapped a tourniquet around her leg to slow the bleeding. it wouldn't be a fourth of july without fireworks. more than a million spectators turned out for the country's biggest pyrotechnics show. macy's celebration in new york city. it used fireworks and drones. the show launched over the hudson river for the first time in a decade. it was a star spangled salute in the capital. the annual fireworks display over the national mall provided a spectacular show after drenching rain earlier in the evening. coming up, a violent fourth of july. shootings rattle the holiday on one of the deadliest days of year. and volcanic fireworks. mt. etna puts on a red-hot show. ,

mount etna in italy is at it again, spewing red-hot lava and thick smoke into the sky. authorities had to close an airport in sicily due to poor visibility. volcanic activity from one of et in's craters -- etna's craters intensified following four years of silence. in the middle east there's refewed hope for a -- renewed hope for a cease-fire and hodge release deal between israel and hamas. israeli prime minister benjamin netahyahu spoke with president biden yesterday to tell him he is sending a delegation to qatar today to continue the negotiations. according to israeli media, israel's defense minister told the families of hostages they are closer than ever to a deal. this new momentum comes after hamas came back with a new response wednesday which a u.s. official called constructive but pointed out more work needs to

be done. violence erupted across the u.s. on the fourth of july which is historically one of the deadliest days of the year. those are the headlines on the "morning newsstand". "the news herald" says a cleveland officer was fatally shot while trying to serve a warrant. officer jamieson ritter was shot and killed yesterday morning. the 27-year-old was part of a team dispatched to serve with a warrant to assault. the suspect took off on a bicycle. when officers tried to stop him, hardy fired multiple times. hardy was arrested and charged with aggravated murder. "the billings gazette" reports a shootout in yellowstone national park has left one dead and another wounded. rangers responded to a report of a man with a gun making threats. there was then an exchange of gunfire. the unidentified shooter was killed. a ranger was injured in the shootout. he's said to be in stable condition. and "the seattle times" is reporting on a fatal shooting of

injured dozens more. celebrations took place under tight security, and the parade was re-routed around the area where the shooting took place. now to cbs "moneywatch." all eyes are on today's release of the latest labor department jobs numbers as trading resumes following the july 4th holiday closure. the jobs report is expected to show a slowdown in hiring in june. economists surveyed by dow jones say the report will show job growth dropped by about 72,000 since may. the unemployment rate, however, is seen holding at 4%. a recall is affecting nearly one million hatch baby rest first generation sound machine power adapters. the company received 19 reports of the plastic surrounding the ac power adapter coming off, including two reports of consumers who experienced electrical shock. consumers should immediately stop using them and contact hatch for a free replacement.
